21-cm Brightness Temperature in a Unified-Dark-Sector Horndeski Theory

We investigate the impact of scalar-tensor theories on the 21cm brightness temperature. We consider a specific model in Horndeski scalar-tensor theory in which dark matter and dark energy in the framework of shift-symmetric generalized Galileon theories was described and an effective unified cosmic fluid was obtained. We calculate the Hubble parameter of the model and we plot the curve of the evolution of the 21-cm temperature in a specific range of the redshift parameter $z$ and compare it to the curve corresponding to $\Lambda$CDM paradigm.

Thermodynamically massless Simpson-Visser black holes

In this work we scrutinize the thermodynamic properties of the Simpson-Visser (SV) spacetime. Working within Einstein gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) and a scalar field with negative kinetic energy, we rederive the solution in a formulation where the integration constants do not explicitly appear in the action, allowing them to vary consistently in the thermodynamic analysis. Using the Euclidean method, we show that the regular spacetime structure modifies the boundary contributions to the conserved charge associated with time translations, allowing the NLED sector to cancel the mass term and yielding a black hole with vanishing thermodynamic mass. Nevertheless, the spacetime admits a conserved magnetic charge and describes a regular black hole with a single horizon, finite temperature, and entropy, while the first law of thermodynamics holds. We further compare this solution with the corresponding scalar-free singular black hole obtained when the regular parameter vanishes. Placing the two configurations in the same heat bath with identical temperature and magnetic chemical potential, we find that the SV regular black hole always has a larger free energy, indicating that the scalar-free singular configuration is thermodynamically preferred.

Thermodynamic analysis of shift-symmetric black-hole spacetimes in Horndeski gravity

In this study, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of shift symmetric Horndeski and beyond Horndeski theories (theories in which only derivatives of the scalar field appear in the action). Utilizing Euclidean methods, we first analyze two specific cases that serve as foundational examples for the broader framework. We derive the general expression for entropy variation within this setting, for homogeneous spacetimes (with $g_{tt}=1/g_{rr}$), demonstrating that both parity-preserving and parity violating terms contribute to the entropy formula. Given the functional form of the coupling terms, the black hole entropy can be determined by integrating this relation with respect to the event horizon. Our general result is consistent with previously reported special cases in the literature. Notably, for particular constraints on the coupling functions, the entropy identically vanishes. Furthermore, we establish that homogeneous spacetimes within shift and parity symmetric beyond Horndeski theories universally obey the Bekenstein Area Law for entropy, irrespective of the specific form of the coupling functions.

To stealth or not to stealth: Thermodynamics of stealth black holes

Using Euclidean methods we investigate the thermodynamics of stealth black hole solutions, which are solutions that geometrically are indistinguishable from those of general relativity, however they are accompanied by a non-trivial additional field that does not back-react to the metric. We find that in general, one can observe shifts in the mass and/or the entropy of such black holes, hence, at least at the thermodynamic level, the stealth solutions may be distinguished by the those of general relativity. We also point out an example, the {\it{bona fide stealth}}, where a non-trivial scalar field can accompany an (A)dS-Schwarzschild black hole without altering the thermodynamic quantities. We point out that thermodynamic discrepancies arise due to the additional boundary terms emanating from the stealth fields, where care should be given in order for the theory at hand to possess a well-defined variational procedure.

Thermodynamics of black holes featuring primary scalar hair

In this work, we embark on the thermodynamic investigation concerning a family of primary charged black holes within the context of shift and parity symmetric Beyond Horndeski gravity. Employing the Euclidean approach, we derive the functional expression for the free energy and derive the first thermodynamic law, offering a methodology to address the challenge of extracting the thermal quantities in shift-symmetric scalar tensor theories characterized by linear time dependence in the scalar field. Following the formal analysis, we provide some illustrative examples focusing on the thermal evaporation of these fascinating objects.

Exact black holes in string-inspired Euler-Heisenberg theory

We consider higher-order derivative gauge field corrections that arise in the fundamental context of dimensional reduction of String Theory and Lovelock-inspired gravities and obtain an exact and asymptotically flat black-hole solution, in the presence of non-trivial dilaton configurations. Specifically, by considering the gravitational theory of Euler-Heisenberg non-linear electrodynamics coupled to a dilaton field with specific coupling functions, we perform an extensive analysis of the characteristics of the black hole, including its geodesics for massive particles, the energy conditions, thermodynamical and stability analysis. The inclusion of a dilaton scalar potential in the action can also give rise to asymptotically (A)dS spacetimes and an effective cosmological constant. Moreover, we find that the black hole can be thermodynamically favored when compared to the Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GMGHS) black hole for those parameters of the model that lead to a larger black-hole horizon for the same mass. Finally, it is observed that the energy conditions of the obtained black hole are indeed satisfied, further validating the robustness of the solution within the theoretical framework, but also implying that this self-gravitating dilaton-non-linear-electrodynamics system constitutes another explicit example of bypassing modern versions of the no-hair theorem without any violation of the energy conditions.

Scalarization of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole with higher derivative gauge field corrections

We discuss spontaneous scalarization of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole in the presence of higher derivative gauge field corrections that arise in the context of string, as well as higher-dimensional more fundamental gravity theories. Our theory admits the Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution at the scalar vacuum of the theory ($\phi=0$) and we find that the higher order derivative gauge field correction term results in the tachyonic instability of our system once the coupling function satisfies the condition that its second derivative is positive at the scalar vacuum in the appropriate parameter space. We find that the branches do not end with an extremal black hole, rather with a singularity as indicated by the divergence of the Kretschmann scalar. The black holes can be overcharged in the sense that they may carry larger electric charge in comparison to their mass. Finally, these solutions possess larger entropy at the event horizon radius when compared to the Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole, as well as to scalarized black holes without the higher order derivative gauge field terms, indicating in this way the thermodynamic prefer-ability of our system, when compared to existing literature, while they respect the energy conditions.

Motion of particles around a magnetically charged Euler-Heisenberg black hole with scalar hair and the Event Horizon Telescope

We study the motion of uncharged particles and photons in the background of a magnetically charged Euler-Heisenberg (EH) black hole (BH) with scalar hair. The spacetime can be asymptotically (A)dS or flat. After investigating particle motions around the BH and the behavior of the effective potential of the particle radial motion, we determine the contribution of the BH parameters to the geodesics. Photons follow null geodesics of an effective geometry induced by the corrections of the EH non-linear electrodynamics. Thus, after determining the effective geometry, we calculate the shadow of the BH. Upon comparing the theoretically calculated BH shadow with the images of the shadows of M87* and Sgr A* obtained by the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration, we impose constraints on the BH parameters, namely the scalar hair ($\nu$), the magnetic charge ($Q_{m}$) and the EH parameter ($\alpha$).

Motion of particles in a magnetically charged Euler-Heisenberg black hole with scalar hair

We study the geodesic motion of uncharged particles in the background of a magnetically charged Euler-Heisenberg black hole with a scalar hair. The spacetime can be asymptotically (A)dS or flat and we find, analysing the behavior of the effective potential of the radial motion that in all cases there exist stable and unstable orbits. Performing numerical integrations we depict the motion of particles for planetary and critical orbits, as well as for radial geodesics. We discuss the effect that the scalar hair $ν$, the magnetic charge $Q_{m}$ and the Euler-Heisenberg parameter $α$ have on the particle motion.

Regular Compact Objects with Scalar Hair

We discuss exact regular compact object solutions in higher dimensional extensions of General Relativity sourced by a phantom scalar field in arbitrary $D$ spacetime dimensions ($D>2$), for which a central singularity is absent. We follow a bottom-up approach, by means of which, by imposing the desired form of the solution to the metric function, we derive the form of the self-interaction scalar potential, which in general appears to depend on both the scalar-hair charge and the black-hole mass. We discuss in this context the validity of the first law of thermodynamics in such systems. Consistency requires the independence of the potential of the mass, imposing in this way the dependence of the mass on the scalar charge of a type that varies with the value of $D$, and according to the no-hair theorem dressing the regular black hole solution with secondary hair. In $D=3,4$ we demonstrate that the potential depends on the ratio of the scalar charge over the mass, and thus considered as a parameter of the theory. This feature, however, does not characterise higher-dimensional cases. Calculating the $D-$dimensional Kretschmann scalar we show that it is finite at the centre point $r=0$ for arbitrary $D$, rendering the solutions regular. The phantom matter content of the theory is also regular at $r=0$, hence the radial coordinate of our manifold is defined for $r \ge 0$. We explicitly discuss the cases of $D=3,4,5,6,10$, and demonstrate that we can have regular, asymptotically flat, black holes with secondary scalar hair.

Black Holes with Scalar Hair in Three Dimensions

Three - dimensional static and spinning black hole solutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system are obtained for a particular scalar field configuration. At large distances, and for small scalar field, the solutions reduce to the BTZ black hole. The scalar field dresses the black hole with secondary scalar hair, since the scalar charge is related to the conserved black hole mass and is not an independent charge. A self interacting potential is included, containing a mass term that is above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound in three dimensions. Independence of the scalar potential from the conserved black hole charges, imposes fixed mass and angular momentum to scalar charge ratios. The thermodynamic properties as well as the energy conditions of the black hole are analysed.

Rotating $(2+1)$-dimensional Black Holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton Theory

We consider Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory in $(2+1)$-dimensions where the coupling between the scalar field and the Maxwell invariant is the dilatonic coupling $f(ϕ) = \exp (-2αϕ)$ and obtain novel exact rotating black hole solutions. The dilatonic parameter $α$ impacts the metric function, affecting the rotating properties of the black hole, its mass and also its thermodynamics. Calculating the entropy we find that it is always positive and the dilatonic black holes may have higher entropy than the BTZ black hole. Depending on the parameters, the dilatonic BTZ-like black hole may be thermodynamically preferred than the BTZ black hole which is recovered when $α=0$.

Magnetically Charged Euler-Heisenberg Black Holes with Scalar Hair

We study the Einstein-Euler-Heisenberg theory in the presence of a self interacting scalar field, minimally coupled to gravity. We solve analytically the field equations for the magnetically charged case and we obtain novel magnetically charged hairy black holes. The scalar field dresses the black hole with a secondary scalar hair. The hairy black hole develops three horizons when Euler-Heisenberg parameter and the magnetic charge are small and the horizon radius is getting large when the scalar charge and the gravitational mass are large. The presence of matter and the magnetic field outside the horizon of the black hole increases the temperature only for small black holes. Calculating the heat capacity we show that the asymptotically AdS Euler-Heisenberg hairy black hole undergoes a second order phase transition and then it is stabilized. Also the weak energy condition is violated for the asymptotically AdS Euler-Heisenberg hairy black hole.

$(2+1)$-Dimensional Black Holes in $f(R,ϕ)$ Gravity

We consider a $f(R)$ gravity theory in $(2+1)$-dimensions with a self-interacting scalar field non-minimally coupled to gravity. Without specifying the form of the $f(R)$ function, solving the field equations we find that the Ricci scalar receives a non-linear correction term which breaks the conformal invariance and leads to a massless black hole solution. When the non-linear term decouples, we get a well known hairy black hole solution with the scalar field conformally coupled to gravity. We also find that the entropy of our black hole may be higher than the corresponding conformal black hole which indicates that our solution may be thermodynamically preferred.

$f({\sf R})$ Gravity Wormholes sourced by a Phantom Scalar Field

We derive an exact wormhole spacetime supported by a phantom scalar field in the context of $f({\sf R})$ gravity. Without specifying the form of the $f({\sf R})$ function, the scalar field self-interacts with a mass term potential that is derived from the scalar equation and the resulting $f({\sf R})$ model is purely supported by the scalar field and it is free of ghosts and avoids the tachyonic instability.

Exact Black Hole Solutions with a Conformally Coupled Scalar Field and Dynamic Ricci Curvature in $f(R)$ Gravity Theories

We report exact black hole solutions in asymptotically flat or (A)dS four-dimensional spacetime with a conformally coupled self-interacting scalar field in $f(R)$ gravity. We first consider the asymptotically flat model $f(R) = R -2α\sqrt{R}$ and derive an exact black hole solution. Then, we consider the asymptotically (A)dS model $f(R) =R -2 Λ-2 α\sqrt{R-4 Λ}$ and derive an exact black hole solution. In both cases the modified gravity parameter $α$, which has the dimension of the inverse mass, cannot be set to zero and the self-interacting potential is determined from the Klein-Gordon equation, preserving the conformal invariance. The thermodynamics of the solutions is also studied.

Black holes of $(2+1)$-dimensional $f(R)$ gravity coupled to a scalar field

We consider $f(R)$ gravity theories in the presence of a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity with a self-interacting potential in $(2+1)$-dimensions. Without specifying the form of the $f(R)$ function, we first obtain an exact black hole solution dressed with scalar hair with the scalar charge to appear in the $f(R)$ function and we discuss its thermodynamics. This solution at large distances gives a hairy BTZ black hole, and it reduces to the BTZ black hole when the scalar field decouples. In a pure $f(R)$ gravity supported by the scalar field, we find an exact hairy black hole similar to the BTZ black hole with phantom hair and an analytic $f(R)$ form and discuss its thermodynamics.

Curvature Scalarization of Black Holes in f(R) Gravity

We consider f(R) gravity theories in the presence of a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity with a self-interacting potential. When the scalar field backreacts to the metric we find at large distances scalarized Schwarzschild-AdS and Schwarzschild-AdS-like black hole solutions. At small distances due to strong curvature effects and the scalar dynamis we find a rich structure of scalarized black hole solutions. When the scalar field is conformally coupled to gravity we also find scalarized black hole solutions at small distances.
