The Colored Jones Polynomial and the A-Polynomial of Knots

We study relationships between the colored Jones polynomial and the A-polynomial of a knot. We establish for a large class of 2-bridge knots the AJ conjecture (of Garoufalidis) that relates the colored Jones polynomial and the A-polynomial. Along the way we also calculate the Kauffman bracket skein module of all 2-bridge knots. Some properties of the colored Jones polynomial of alternating knots are established.

Strong Integrality of Quantum Invariants of 3-manifolds

We prove that the quantum SO(3)-invariant of an arbitrary 3-manifold $M$ is always an algebraic integer, if the order of the quantum parameter is co-prime with the order of the torsion part of $H_1(M,\BZ)$. An even stronger integrality, known as cyclotomic integrality, was established by Habiro for integral homology 3-spheres. Here we generalize Habiro's result to all rational homology 3-spheres.

Is the Jones polynomial of a knot really a polynomial?

The Jones polynomial of a knot in 3-space is a Laurent polynomial in $q$, with integer coefficients. Many people have pondered why is this so, and what is a proper generalization of the Jones polynomial for knots in other closed 3-manifolds. Our paper centers around this question. After reviewing several existing definitions of the Jones polynomial, we show that the Jones polynomial is really an analytic function, in the sense of Habiro. Using this, we extend the holonomicity properties of the colored Jones function of a knot in 3-space to the case of a knot in an integer homology sphere, and we formulate an analogue of the AJ Conjecture. Our main tools are various integrality properties of topological quantum field theory invariants of links in 3-manifolds, manifested in Habiro's work on the colored Jones function.Revised version updating references on Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants.

An analytic version of the Melvin-Morton-Rozansky Conjecture

To a knot in 3-space, one can associate a sequence of Laurent polynomials, whose $n$th term is the $n$th colored Jones polynomial. The Volume Conjecture for small angles states that the value of the $n$-th colored Jones polynomial at $e^{\a/n}$ is a sequence of complex numbers that grows subexponentially, for a fixed small complex angle $\a$. In an earlier publication, the authors proved the Volume Conjecture for small purely imaginary angles, using estimates of the cyclotomic expansion of a knot. The goal of the present paper is to identify the polynomial growth rate of the above sequence to all orders with the loop expansion of the colored Jones function. Among other things, this provides a strong analytic form of the Melvin-Morton-Rozansky conjecture. The resubmission corrects a misspelling of the first name of the second author.

On the Colored Jones Polynomial and the Kashaev invariant

We express the colored Jones polynomial as the inverse of the quantum determinant of a matrix with entries in the $q$-Weyl algebra of $q$-operators, evaluated at the trivial function (plus simple substitutions). The Kashaev invariant is proved to be equal to another special evaluation of the determinant. We also discuss the similarity between our determinant formula of the Kashaev invariant and the determinant formula of the hyperbolic volume of knot complements, hoping it would lead to a proof of the volume conjecture.

Quantum invariants of 3-manifolds: integrality, splitting, and perturbative expansion

We consider quantum invariants of 3-manifolds associated with arbitrary simple Lie algebras. Using the symmetry principle we show how to decompose the quantum invariant as the product of two invariants, one of them is the invariant corresponding to the projective group. We then show that the projective quantum invariant is always an algebraic integer, if the quantum parameter is a prime root of unity. We also show that the projective quantum invariant of rational homology 3-spheres has a perturbative expansion a la Ohtsuki. The presentation of the theory of quantum 3-manifold is self-contained.

On Perturbative PSU(n) Invariants of Rational Homology 3-Spheres

We construct power series invariants of rational homology 3-spheres from quantum PSU(n)-invariants. The power series can be regarded as perturbative invariants corresponding to the contribution of the trivial connection in the hypothetical Witten's integral. This generalizes a result of Ohtsuki (the $n=2$ case) which led him to the definition of finite type invariants of 3-manifolds. The proof utilizes some symmetry properties of quantum invariants (of links) derived from the theory of affine Lie algebras and the theory of the Kontsevich integral.

On Denominators of the Kontsevich Integral and the Universal Perturbative Invariant of 3-Manifolds

The integrality of the Kontsevich integral and perturbative invariants is discussed. We show that the denominator of the degree $n$ part of the Kontsevich integral of any knot or link is a divisor of $(2!3!... n!)^4(n+1)!$. We also show that the denominator of of the degree $n$ part of the universal perturbative invariant of homology 3-spheres is not divisible by any prime greater than $2n+1$.

An Invariant of Integral Homology 3-Spheres Which Is Universal For All Finite Type Invariants

In [LMO] a 3-manifold invariant $Ω(M)$ is constructed using a modification of the Kontsevich integral and the Kirby calculus. The invariant $Ω$ takes values in a graded Hopf algebra of Feynman 3-valent graphs. Here we show that for homology 3-spheres the invariant $Ω$ is {\em universal} for all finite type invariants, i.e. $Ω_n$ is an invariant of order $3n$ which dominates all other invariants of the same order. This shows that the set of finite type invariants of homology 3-spheres is equivalent to the Hopf algebra of Feynman 3-valent graphs. Some corollaries are discussed. A theory of groups of homology 3-spheres, similar to Gusarov's theory for knots, is presented.

On a Universal Invariant of 3-Manifolds

We construct an invariant of 3-manifolds using a modification of the Kontsevich integral and Kirby's calculus. This invariant, as expected in perturbative Chern-Simon theory, takes values in the algebra of oriented 3-valent graphs. This algebra is a Hopf algebra, graded by half the number of vertices in 3-valent graphs. The degree 1 term of the invariant coincides with Casson-Walker-Lescop invariant. The degree $n$ term is constructed out of the universal Vassiliev invariant of links of degree less than or equal to $(l+1)n$ where $l$ is the number of link components.
