Measurement of the $b$-jet identification efficiency in dileptonic $t\bar{t}$ events using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV collected with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents the performance of the identification of jets containing $b$-hadrons ($b$-jets) for the GN2 algorithm, a transformer-based model for jet flavour tagging, using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data recorded in 2022 and 2023 at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13.6$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 56 fb$^{-1}$. The $b$-jet identification efficiency and jet flavour composition are extracted simultaneously from a sample enriched in top-quark pair events ($t\bar{t}$). This efficiency is measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum in the range of 20-400 GeV and across six intervals of cumulative efficiency as derived in simulated $t\bar{t}$ events: [100%, 90%], [90%, 85%], [85%, 77%], [77%, 70%], [70%, 65%], and [65%, 0%]. The GN2 algorithm demonstrates significant performance improvements over its predecessor DL1d, achieving up to a factor of two (three) higher rejection of light-flavour (charm-flavour) jets at the same $b$-jet efficiency. The measured efficiencies in data are compared with simulation to derive correction factors ranging from 0.9 to 1.3. The total uncertainty is around 1% for jets with transverse momentum larger than 60 GeV in the [65%, 0%] interval of cumulative efficiency.

Search for pair-produced vector-like $T$-quarks decaying into $Ht$ final states in the lepton-plus-jets channel in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for pair-produced vector-like $T$-quarks in 139 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV is presented. The search targets signal events where at least one $T$-quark decays into a Higgs boson and a top quark, $T\rightarrow Ht$, with subsequent decays of the Higgs boson into a bottom quark-antiquark pair, $H\rightarrow b\bar{b}$, and the top quark into a light charged lepton, a neutrino and a bottom quark, $t\rightarrow\ell^+\nu_\ell b$, where $\ell=e/\mu$. The decay products of boosted heavy resonances are reconstructed using variable-radius, reclustered jets, and a neural network is employed to discriminate signal from Standard Model background processes. A profile-likelihood fit to the effective mass distribution is performed, and no excess above the Standard Model prediction is observed. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are set on the $T$-quark pair-production cross-section, corresponding to lower mass limits of 1.40 TeV in the SU(2) singlet representation, 1.56 TeV in the SU(2) doublet representation, and 1.66 TeV assuming the branching fraction of $T$-quarks to $Ht$ to be 100%.

Differential measurements of $\gamma\gamma\to\tau\tau$ and constraints on $\tau$-lepton electromagnetic moments in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_\text{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with ATLAS

This paper presents the first differential fiducial measurements of $\gamma\gamma\to\tau\tau$ using 1.93 nb$^{-1}$ of Pb+Pb data at $\sqrt{s_{_\text{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. Events in which one of the $\tau$-leptons decays into a muon and two neutrinos $\tau\to\nu_\tau\bar{\nu}_\mu\mu$ are selected and are categorized into three regions by the presence of an electron or either one or three charged-particle track(s) from the second $\tau$-lepton decay. The measurement is performed in events where both Pb ions remain intact and no neutrons are emitted. Differential cross-sections are measured for seven variables in three fiducial regions at particle level. The measurements are compared to theory predictions with different photon flux models and spin correlation effects. For the fiducial region with one muon and one electron in the final state, comparisons to next-to-leading-order electroweak predictions are also made. The transverse momentum ($p_\text{T}$) of the decay muon, the $p_\text{T}$ of the visible decay particles of the other $\tau$-lepton, the total $p_\text{T}$, invariant mass, and pseudorapidity of the visible particles from the di-$\tau$ system, and the rapidity and acoplanarity of the visible decay particles from either $\tau$-lepton are measured. A maximum-likelihood fit to the muon transverse-momentum distributions in the three regions before unfolding is performed to extract the $\tau$-lepton anomalous magnetic moment $a_{\tau}$ and electric dipole moment $d_{\tau}$, the latter for the first time in heavy ion collisions. The observed 95% confidence level intervals are $-0.057 <a_{\tau}< 0.035$ and $|d_{\tau}|< 2.7 \times 10^{-16}~e\text{cm}$.}

Combination of measurements of CP properties of Higgs boson interactions with vector bosons using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A combination of measurements of the CP properties of Higgs boson interactions with electroweak gauge bosons is presented, using 140 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. Results from VBF $H\to\tau\tau/WW^{*}/\gamma\gamma$, inclusive $H\to ZZ^{*}$, and $WH,H\to b\bar{b}$ channels are combined. No evidence of CP violation is observed, and constrains on the CP-violating operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework are set in the Warsaw basis. The results from the combination improve by over 40$\% $ on previous individual limits on $c_{H\tilde{W}}$ and, for the first time, simultaneous constraints on three coefficients $c_{H\tilde{W}}$, $c_{H\tilde{B}}$, and $c_{H\tilde{W}B}$ are set. These limits are the most stringent constraints to date on the relevant Wilson coefficients in the SMEFT framework with minimum model dependence.

Reinterpretation of searches for supersymmetry in models with variable R-parity-violating coupling strength using the full ATLAS Run 2 Dataset

A collection of thirteen ATLAS searches for supersymmetry (SUSY) models, optimized for R-parity-conserving (RPC) and R-parity-violating (RPV) SUSY, are reinterpreted in SUSY models with variable RPV coupling strength, which determines whether the lightest supersymmetric particle decays promptly or is long-lived. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Limits are set at 95% confidence level on the mass of pair-produced gluinos decaying to final states enhanced or depleted with top quarks, and on the masses of pair-produced top squarks, tau-sleptons, or charginos and neutralinos. In a model of pair-produced gluinos decaying to final states enhanced with top quarks, a lower limit of 1.8 TeV on the gluino mass is set regardless of the RPV coupling value. In the gluino model with decays to first and second generation quarks, gluino masses are excluded up to 1.6-2.2 (1.6-2.5) TeV for different values of the RPV coupling $\lambda^{'}$ ($\lambda^{''}$). Top-squark masses up to 2.4 TeV are excluded at high values of $\lambda^{''}$, compared to 1.0-1.7 TeV for low and intermediate $\lambda^{''}$. Tau-slepton masses between 180 GeV and 340 GeV are excluded for $\lambda$ couplings smaller than $10^{-4}$. Higgsino masses up to 800 GeV-1.0 TeV are excluded when $\lambda_{i33}$ is larger than $4\times10^{-5}$. This work extends the analyses beyond RPC scenarios to a broad class of RPV frameworks and achieves significantly improved sensitivity to a diverse range of long-lived particle signatures.

Measurement of the $W$-boson angular coefficients and transverse momentum in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The angular distributions of Drell-Yan lepton pairs provide sensitive probes of the underlying dynamics of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) effects in vector-boson production. This paper presents for the first time the measurement of the full set of angular coefficients together with the differential cross-section as a function of the transverse momentum of the $W$ boson, in the full phase space of the decay leptons. The measurements are performed separately for the $W^-$ and $W^+$ channels. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in 2017 and 2018, during special low-luminosity runs with a reduced number of interactions per bunch crossings (pile-up). The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 338 pb$^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV. The low pile-up environment provides excellent experimental conditions for high-precision measurements of $W$-boson production. All results agree with theoretical predictions incorporating finite-order QCD corrections up to order $\alpha_S^2$.

Projections for Key Measurements in Heavy Flavour Physics

Precision studies of flavour-changing processes involving quarks and leptons provide a number of ways to improve knowledge of the Standard Model and search for physics beyond it. There are excellent short- and mid-term prospects for significantly improved measurements in heavy flavour physics (involving b and c hadrons and $\tau$ leptons), with upgrades in progress or planned for the ATLAS, CMS and LHCb experiments exploiting proton-proton collisions at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, and for the Belle II experiment operating with electron-positron collisions from the SuperKEKB accelerator in KEK. The expected sensitivities that can be achieved from these experiments for a number of key observables are presented, highlighting the complementarity of the different experiments and showing how the precision will improve with time. This international programme in heavy flavour physics will result in unprecedented capability to probe this sector of the Standard Model and, potentially, observe imprints of physics at higher energy scales than can be accessed directly.

A measurement of the high-mass $\tau\bar{\tau}$ production cross-section at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector and constraints on new particles and couplings

The production cross-section of high-mass $\tau$-lepton pairs is measured as a function of the dilepton visible invariant mass, using 140 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton-proton collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement agrees with the predictions of the Standard Model. A fit to the invariant mass distribution is performed as a function of $b$-jet multiplicity, to constrain the non-resonant production of new particles described by an effective field theory or in models containing leptoquarks or $Z'$ bosons that couple preferentially to third-generation fermions. The constraints on new particles improve on previous results, and the constraints on effective operators include those affecting the anomalous magnetic moment of the $\tau$-lepton.

Evidence for longitudinally polarized $W$ bosons in the electroweak production of same-sign $W$ boson pairs in association with two jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

This Letter reports the first evidence of production of same-sign $W$ boson pairs where at least one of the $W$ bosons is longitudinally polarized and the most stringent constraint to date for the production of two longitudinally polarized same-sign $W$ bosons. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The study is performed in final states including two same-sign leptons (electrons or muons), missing transverse momentum, and at least two jets with a large invariant mass and a large rapidity difference. Two independent fits are performed targeting the production of same-sign $W$ bosons with at least one, or two longitudinally polarized $W$ bosons. The observed (expected) significance of the production with at least one longitudinally polarized $W$ boson is 3.3 (4.0) standard deviations. An observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limit of 0.45 (0.70) fb is reported on the fiducial production cross section of two longitudinally polarized same-sign $W$ bosons.

Measurement of single top-quark production in association with a $W$ boson in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

The inclusive cross-section for the production of a single top quark in association with a $W$ boson is measured using 140 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. Events containing two charged leptons and at least one jet identified as originating from a $b$-quark are selected. A multivariate discriminant is constructed to separate the $tW$ signal from the $t\bar{t}$ background. The cross-section is extracted using a profile likelihood fit to the signal and control regions and it is measured to be $\sigma_{tW} = 75^{+15}_{-14}$ pb, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction. The measured cross-section is used to extract a value for the left-handed form factor at the $Wtb$ vertex times the CKM matrix element $|f_\text{LV}V_{tb}|$ of $0.97 \pm 0.10$.

Total cost of ownership and evaluation of Google cloud resources for the ATLAS experiment at the LHC

The ATLAS Google Project was established as part of an ongoing evaluation of the use of commercial clouds by the ATLAS Collaboration, in anticipation of the potential future adoption of such resources by WLCG grid sites to fulfil or complement their computing pledges. Seamless integration of Google cloud resources into the worldwide ATLAS distributed computing infrastructure was achieved at large scale and for an extended period of time, and hence cloud resources are shown to be an effective mechanism to provide additional, flexible computing capacity to ATLAS. For the first time a total cost of ownership analysis has been performed, to identify the dominant cost drivers and explore effective mechanisms for cost control. Network usage significantly impacts the costs of certain ATLAS workflows, underscoring the importance of implementing such mechanisms. Resource bursting has been successfully demonstrated, whilst exposing the true cost of this type of activity. A follow-up to the project is underway to investigate methods for improving the integration of cloud resources in data-intensive distributed computing environments and reducing costs related to network connectivity, which represents the primary expense when extensively utilising cloud resources.

Measurement of the total and differential cross-sections of $t\bar{t}W$ production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of inclusive and differential production cross-sections of a top-quark-top-antiquark pair in association with a $W$ boson ($t\bar{t}W$) are presented. They are performed by targeting final states with two same-sign or three isolated leptons (electrons or muons) and are based on $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb$^{-1}$, recorded from 2015 to 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The inclusive $t\bar{t}W$ production cross-section is measured to be $880 \pm 80$ fb, compared to a reference theoretical prediction of $745 \pm 50\,\textrm{(scale)} \pm 13\,\textrm{(2-loop approx.)} \pm 19\,\textrm{(PDF,} \alpha_{\textrm{S}})$ fb. Differential cross-section measurements characterise this process in detail for the first time. Several particle-level observables are compared with a variety of theoretical predictions, which generally agree well with the normalised differential cross-section results. Additionally, the relative charge asymmetry of $t\bar{t}W^{+}$ and $t\bar{t}W^{-}$ is measured inclusively to be ${A_{\mathrm{C}}^{\mathrm{rel}}} = 0.33 \pm 0.05$, in very good agreement with the theoretical prediction of $0.322 \pm 0.003\,\mathrm{(scale)} \pm 0.007\,\mathrm{(PDF)}$, as well as differentially.

Measurement and interpretation of same-sign $W$ boson pair production in association with two jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents the measurement of fiducial and differential cross sections for both the inclusive and electroweak production of a same-sign $W$-boson pair in association with two jets ($W^\pm W^\pm jj$) using 139 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is performed by selecting two same-charge leptons, electron or muon, and at least two jets with large invariant mass and a large rapidity difference. The measured fiducial cross sections for electroweak and inclusive $W^\pm W^\pm jj$ production are $2.92 \pm 0.22\, \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.19\, \text{(syst.)}$ fb and $3.38 \pm 0.22\, \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.19\, \text{(syst.)}$ fb, respectively, in agreement with Standard Model predictions. The measurements are used to constrain anomalous quartic gauge couplings by extracting 95% confidence level intervals on dimension-8 operators. A search for doubly charged Higgs bosons $H^{\pm\pm}$ that are produced in vector-boson fusion processes and decay into a same-sign $W$ boson pair is performed. The largest deviation from the Standard Model occurs for an $H^{\pm\pm}$ mass near 450 GeV, with a global significance of 2.5 standard deviations.

Measurement of the centrality dependence of the dijet yield in $p$+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_\text{NN}}}$ = 8.16 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The measurement of hard scatterings in proton-nucleus collisions has resulted in a greater understanding of both the proton and nuclear structure. ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165 nb$^{-1}$ of $p$+Pb data collected at $\sqrt{s_{_\text{NN}}}$ = 8.16 TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the $p$+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, $R_\mathrm{CP}$, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The $R_\mathrm{CP}$ shows a scaling with the Bjorken-$x$ of the parton originating from the proton, $x_p$, while no such trend is observed as a function of $x_\mathrm{Pb}$. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in $p$+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to $x_p \sim 10^{-3}$ and $x_\mathrm{Pb}\sim 4\cdot10^{-4}$.

Combined measurement of the Higgs boson mass from the $H\to\gamma\gamma$ and $H\to ZZ^{*} \to 4\ell$ decay channels with the ATLAS detector using $\sqrt{s}$ = 7, 8 and 13 TeV $pp$ collision data

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the $H\to ZZ^{*} \to 4\ell$ and $H\to\gamma\gamma$ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC Run 2 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the Run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11 $\pm$ 0.09 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.06 (syst.) = 125.11 $\pm$ 0.11 GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09 % precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Search for leptoquarks decaying into the b$\tau$ final state in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for leptoquarks decaying into the $b\tau$ final state is performed using Run 2 proton-proton collision data from the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. The benchmark models considered in this search are vector leptoquarks with electric charge of 2/3e and scalar leptoquarks with an electric charge of 4/3e. No significant excess above the Standard Model prediction is observed, and 95% confidence level upper limits are set on the cross-section times branching fraction of leptoquarks decaying into $b\tau$. For the vector leptoquark production two models are considered: the Yang-Mills and Minimal coupling models. In the Yang-Mills (Minimal coupling) scenario, vector leptoquarks with a mass below 1.58 (1.35) TeV are excluded for a gauge coupling of 1.0 and below 2.05 (1.99) TeV for a gauge coupling of 2.5. In the case of scalar leptoquarks, masses below 1.28 TeV (1.53 TeV) are excluded for a Yukawa coupling of 1.0 (2.5). Finally, an interpretation of the results with minimal model dependence is performed for each of the signal region categories, and limits on the visible cross-section for beyond the Standard Model processes are provided.

Measurement of the production of a $W$ boson in association with a charmed hadron in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\mathrm{TeV}$ with the ATLAS detector

The production of a $W$ boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 140 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\mathrm{TeV}$ proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The charm quark is tagged by a charmed hadron, reconstructed with a secondary-vertex fit. The $W$ boson is reconstructed from an electron/muon decay and the missing transverse momentum. The mesons reconstructed are $D^{\pm} \to K^\mp \pi^\pm \pi^\pm$ and $D^{*\pm} \to D^{0} \pi^\pm \to (K^\mp \pi^\pm) \pi^\pm$, where $p_{\text{T}}(e, \mu) > 30\,\mathrm{GeV}$, $|\eta(e, \mu)| < 2.5$, $p_{\text{T}}(D) > 8\,\mathrm{GeV}$, and $|\eta(D)| < 2.2$. The integrated and normalized differential cross-sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the $W$ boson decay, and of the transverse momentum of the meson, are extracted from the data using a profile likelihood fit. The measured fiducial cross-sections are $\sigma^{\mathrm{OS-SS}}_{\mathrm{fid}}(W^{-}{+}D^{+}) = 50.2\pm0.2\,\mathrm{(stat.)}\,^{+2.4}_{-2.3}\,\mathrm{(syst.)}\,\mathrm{pb}$, $\sigma^{\mathrm{OS-SS}}_{\mathrm{fid}}(W^{+}{+}D^{-}) = 48.5\pm0.2\,\mathrm{(stat.)}\,^{+2.3}_{-2.2}\,\mathrm{(syst.)}\,\mathrm{pb}$, $\sigma^{\mathrm{OS-SS}}_{\mathrm{fid}}(W^{-}{+}D^{*+}) = 51.1\pm0.4\,\mathrm{(stat.)}\,^{+1.9}_{-1.8}\,\mathrm{(syst.)}\,\mathrm{pb}$, and $\sigma^{\mathrm{OS-SS}}_{\mathrm{fid}}(W^{+}{+}D^{*-}) = 50.0\pm0.4\,\mathrm{(stat.)}\,^{+1.9}_{-1.8}\,\mathrm{(syst.)}\,\mathrm{pb}$. Results are compared with the predictions of next-to-leading-order quantum chromodynamics calculations performed using state-of-the-art parton distribution functions. The ratio of charm to anti-charm production cross-sections is studied to probe the $s$-$\bar{s}$ quark asymmetry and is found to be $R_c^\pm = 0.971\pm0.006\,\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm0.011\,\mathrm{(syst.)}$.

Measurement of the charge asymmetry in top-quark pair production in association with a photon with the ATLAS experiment

A measurement of the charge asymmetry in top-quark pair ($t\bar{t}$) production in association with a photon is presented. The measurement is performed in the single-lepton $t\bar{t}$ decay channel using proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN at a centre-of-mass-energy of 13 TeV during the years 2015-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$. The charge asymmetry is obtained from the distribution of the difference of the absolute rapidities of the top quark and antiquark using a profile likelihood unfolding approach. It is measured to be $A_\text{C}=-0.003 \pm 0.029$ in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.
