Tan's universal contact and collective oscillations of strongly interacting Fermi gases

We study strongly interacting two component Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance. By using a ground state energy functional constructed based on asymptotic limits and Monte Carlo calculations, we calculate the contact, structure factor, and collective oscillation frequencies in the BCS-BEC crossover region. The calculated contact and structure factor show excellent agreements with recent experiments. We compare these results with a standard mean-field theory and find that the contact is proportional to the square of superfluid order parameter. Further, we present the chemical potential and the polytropic index in terms of homogenous energy and the contact.

Low temperature thermodynamic properties of a polarized Fermi gas in a quartic trap

We study low temperature thermodynamic properties of a polarized Fermi gas trapped in a quartic anharmonic potential. We use a semi classical approximation and a low temperature series expansion method to derive analytical expressions for various thermodynamic quantities. These quantities include the total energy, particle number, and heat capacity for both positive and negative anharmonic confinements.

Density profiles and density oscillations of an interacting three-component normal Fermi gas

We use a semiclassical approximation to investigate density variations and dipole oscillations of an interacting three-component normal Fermi gas in a harmonic trap. We consider both attractive and repulsive interactions between different pairs of fermions and study the effect of population imbalance on densities. We find that the density profiles significantly deviate from those of non-interacting profiles and extremely sensitive to interactions and population imbalance. Unlike for a two-component Fermi system, we find density imbalance even for balanced populations. For some range of parameters, one component completely repels from the trap center giving rise a donut shape density profile. Further, we find that the in-phase dipole oscillation frequency is consistent with Kohn's theorem and other two dipole mode frequencies are strongly effected by the interactions and the number of atoms in the harmonic trap.

Three component fermion pairing in two dimensions

We study pairing of an interacting three component Fermi gas in two dimensions. By using a mean field theory to decouple the interactions between different pairs of Fermi components, we study the free energy landscapes as a function of various system parameters including chemical potentials, binding energies, and temperature. We find that the s-wave pairing channel is determined by both chemical potentials and the interaction strengths between the three available channels. We find a second order thermal phase transition and a series of first order quantum phase transitions for a homogenous system as we change the parameters. In particular, for symmetric parameters, we find the simultaneous existence of three superfluid orders as well as re-entrant quantum phase transitions as we tune the parameters.

Population imbalanced Fermi gases in quasi two dimensions

We study s-wave pairing of population imbalanced Fermi atoms in quasi two dimensions using a mean field theory. At zero temperature, we map out the phase diagram in the entire Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer-Bose Einstein condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover region by investigating the effect of weak atom tunneling between layers. We find that the superfluid phase stabilizes as one decreases the atom tunneling between layers. This allows one to control the superfluid-normal first order phase transition by tuning a single experimental parameter. Further, we find that a tunneling induced polarized superfluid phase appears in a narrow parameter region in the BEC regime. At Finite temperatures, we use a Landau-Ginzberg functional approach to investigate the possibility of spatially inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase in the weakly interacting BCS limit near the tricritical point of spatially homogenous superfluid, FFLO, and normal phases. We find that the normal-FFLO phase transition is first order transition as opposed to the continues transition predicted in zero temperature theories.

Theory of the Normal/Superfluid interface in population imbalanced Fermi gases

We present a series of theoretical studies of the boundary between a superfluid and normal region in a partially polarized gas of strongly interacting fermions. We present mean-field estimates of the surface energy in this boundary as a function of temperature and scattering length. We discuss the structure of the domain wall, and use a previously introduced phenomonological model to study its influence on experimental observables. Our microscopic mean-field calculations are not consistent with the magnitude of the surface tension found from our phenomonological modelling of data from the Rice experiments. We conclude that one must search for novel mechanisms to explain the experiments.

Fermionic superfluid properties in a one-dimensional optical lattice

We discuss various superfluid properties of a two-component Fermi system in the presence of a tight one-dimensional periodic potential in a three-dimensional system. We use a zero temperature mean field theory and derive analytical expressions for the Josephson current, the sound velocity and the center of mass oscillations in the BCS-Bose Einstein condensation crossover region.

Breathing mode frequencies of a rotating Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover region

We study the breathing mode frequencies of a rotating Fermi gas trapped in a harmonic plus radial quartic potential. We find that as the radial anharmonicity increases, the lowest order radial mode frequency increases while the next lowest order radial mode frequency decreases. Then at a critical anharmonicity, these two modes merge and beyond this merge the cloud is unstable against the oscillations. The critical anharmonicity depends on both rotational frequency and the chemical potential. As a result of the large chemical potential in the BCS regime, even with a weak anharmonicity the lowest order mode frequency increases with decreasing the attractive interaction. For large enough anharmonicities in the weak coupling BCS limit, we find that the excitation of the breathing mode frequencies make the atomic cloud unstable.

Surface Tension in Unitary Fermi Gases with Population Imbalance

We study the effects of surface tension between normal and superfluid regions of a trapped Fermi gas at unitarity. We find that surface tension causes notable distortions in the shape of large aspect ratio clouds. Including these distortions in our theories resolves many of the apparent discrepancies among different experiments and between theory and experiments.

Collective modes as a probe of the equation of state for partially polarized Fermi gases

We calculate the collective modes of a partially polarized Fermi gas trapped in a spherically symmetric harmonic potential. We show that the breathing mode frequency exhibits non-monotonic dependence on polarization in the entire BCS-BEC crossover region. Moreover, we find that the breathing mode can be used to distinguish between two commonly used unitary gas equations of state.

Profiles of near-resonant population-imbalanced trapped Fermi gases

We investigate the density profiles of a partially polarized trapped Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover region using mean field theory within the local density approximation. Within this approximation the gas is phase separated into concentric shells. We describe how the structure of these shells depends upon the polarization and the interaction strength. A Comparison with experiments yields insight into the possibility of a polarized superfluid phase.

Collective oscillations of a Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance

A sum rule approach is used to calculate the zero temperature oscillation frequencies of a two component trapped atomic Fermi gas in the BCS-Bose Einstein condensation crossover region. These sum rules are evaluated using a local density approximation which explicitly includes Feshbach molecules. Breathing modes show non-monotonic behavior as a function of the interaction strength, while quadrupole modes are insensitive to interactions for both spherically symmetric and axially symmetric traps. Quantitative agreement is found with experiments on atomic $^6Li$ system and with other theoretical approaches.

Theory for spin and orbital orderings in high temperature phase in $YVO_3$

Motivated by the recent neutron diffraction experiment on $YVO_3$, we consider a microscopic model where each $V^{3+}$ ion is occupied by two 3d electrons of parallel spins with two fold degenerate orbital configurations. The mean field classical solutions of the spin-orbital superexchange model predicts an antiferro-orbital ordering at a higher temperature followed by a C-type antiferromagnetic spin ordering at a lower temperature. Our results are qualitatively consistent with the observed orbital phase transition at $\sim 200K$ and the spin phase transition at $\sim 114K$ in $YVO_3$.

Pathology of Schwinger boson mean field theory for Heisenberg spin models

We have re-analyze the Schwinger boson mean field theory (SBMFT) for Heisenberg spin models on the cubic lattice. We find that the second order phase transition point for magnetic ordering previously reported corresponds to a local maximum of the free energy functional. For both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models with spin $S \geq S_C$, where $S_C < 1/2$, the mean field transitions are first order from the magnetically long-ranged ordered phase to the completely uncorrelated phase. In addition to erroneously giving a first order transition for magnetic ordering, the mean field theory does not include a phase with finite short-range correlation, thus negating one of the prime advantages of SBMFT. The relevance of these pathologies to other situations beyond the cubic lattice is discussed.
