Approximable Triangulated Categories and Reflexive DG-categories

We use the theory of approximable triangulated categories to give a condition for a proper DG-category to be reflexive in the sense of Kuznetsov and Shinder. To do this we provide another description of the completion of an approximable triangulated category under a properness assumption. We apply our results to proper schemes, proper connective DG-algebras and Azumaya algebras over proper schemes. We include an appendix by Raedschelders and Stevenson showing that proper connective DG-algebras admit finite dimensional models over any field.

Proper connective differential graded algebras and their geometric realizations

We prove that every proper connective DG-algebra $A$ admits a geometric realization (as defined by Orlov) by a smooth projective scheme with a full exceptional collection. As a corollary we obtain that $A$ is quasi-isomorphic to a finite dimensional DG-algebra and in the smooth case we compute the noncommutative Chow motive of $A$. We go on to analyse the relationship between smoothness and regularity in more detail as well as commenting on smoothness of the degree zero cohomology for smooth proper connective DG-algebras.

Derived categories of flips and cubic hypersurfaces

A classical result of Bondal-Orlov states that a standard flip in birational geometry gives rise to a fully faithful functor between derived categories of coherent sheaves. We complete their embedding into a semiorthogonal decomposition by describing the complement. As an application, we can lift the "quadratic Fano correspondence" (due to Galkin-Shinder) in the Grothendieck ring of varieties between a smooth cubic hypersurface, its Fano variety of lines, and its Hilbert square, to a semiorthogonal decomposition. We also show that the Hilbert square of a cubic hypersurface of dimension at least 3 is again a Fano variety, so in particular the Fano variety of lines on a cubic hypersurface is a Fano visitor. The most interesting case is that of a cubic fourfold, where this exhibits the first higher-dimensional hyperkähler variety as a Fano visitor.

New examples of non-Fourier-Mukai functors

In this paper we prove that any smooth projective variety of dimension $\ge 3$ equipped with a tilting bundle can serve as the source variety of a non-Fourier-Mukai functor between smooth projective schemes.

Hochschild cohomology and deformations of $\mathbb{P}$-functors

Given a split $\mathbb{P}$-functor $F:\mathcal{D}^b(X) \to \mathcal{D}^b(Y)$ between smooth projective varieties, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of the Hochschild cohomology of $X$, for it to become spherical on the total space of a deformation of $Y$, and explain how the spherical twist becomes the $\mathbb{P}$-twist on the special fibre. These results generalise the object case, that is when $X$ is a point, which was studied previously by Huybrechts and Thomas, and we show how they apply to the $\mathbb{P}$-functor associated to the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface. In the appendix we review and reorganise some technical results due to Toda, relating to the interaction of Atiyah classes, the HKR-isomorphism, and the characteristic morphism.

On solvability of the first Hochschild cohomology of a finite-dimensional algebra

For an arbitrary finite-dimensional algebra $A$, we introduce a general approach to determining when its first Hochschild cohomology ${\rm HH}^1(A)$, considered as a Lie algebra, is solvable. If $A$ is moreover of tame or finite representation type, we are able to describe ${\rm HH}^1(A)$ as the direct sum of a solvable Lie algebra and a sum of copies of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. We proceed to determine the exact number of such copies, and give an explicit formula for this number in terms of certain chains of Kronecker subquivers of the quiver of $A$. As a corollary, we obtain a precise answer to a question posed by Chaparro, Schroll and Solotar.

The Frobenius morphism in invariant theory II

Let $R$ be the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}=Gr(2,n)$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p \geq \max\{n-2,3\}$. In this paper we give a description of the decomposition of $R$, considered as graded $R^{p^r}$-module, for $r \geq 2$. This is a companion paper to our earlier paper, where the case $r=1$ was treated, and taken together, our results imply that $R$ has finite F-representation type (FFRT). Though it is expected that all rings of invariants for reductive groups have FFRT, ours is the first non-trivial example of such a ring for a group which is not linearly reductive. As a corollary, we show that the ring of differential operators $D_k(R)$ is simple, that $\mathbb{G}$ has global finite F-representation type (GFFRT) and that $R$ provides a noncommutative resolution for $R^{p^r}$.

Derived categories of noncommutative quadrics and Hilbert squares

A noncommutative deformation of a quadric surface is usually described by a three-dimensional cubic Artin-Schelter regular algebra. In this paper we show that for such an algebra its bounded derived category embeds into the bounded derived category of a commutative deformation of the Hilbert scheme of two points on the quadric. This is the second example in support of a conjecture by Orlov. Based on this example, we formulate an infinitesimal version of the conjecture, and provide some evidence in the case of smooth projective surfaces.

Admissible subcategories in derived categories of moduli of vector bundles on curves

We show that the Poincaré bundle gives a fully faithful embedding from the derived category of a curve of sufficiently high genus into the derived category of its moduli space of bundles of rank $r$ with fixed determinant of degree 1. Moreover we show that a twist of the embedding, together with 2 exceptional line bundles, gives the start of a semi-orthogonal decomposition. This generalises results of Narasimhan and Fonarev-Kuznetsov, who embedded the derived category of a single copy of the curve, for rank 2.

The Frobenius morphism in invariant theory

Let $R$ be the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}=\operatorname{Gr}(2,n)$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper we give a completely characteristic free description of the decomposition of $R$, considered as a graded $R^p$-module, into indecomposables ("Frobenius summands"). As a corollary we obtain a similar decomposition for the Frobenius pushforward of the structure sheaf of $\mathbb{G}$ and we obtain in particular that this pushforward is almost never a tilting bundle. On the other hand we show that $R$ provides a "noncommutative resolution" for $R^p$ when $p\ge n-2$, generalizing a result known to be true for toric varieties. In both the invariant theory and the geometric setting we observe that if the characteristic is not too small the Frobenius summands do not depend on the characteristic in a suitable sense. In the geometric setting this is an explicit version of a general result by Bezrukavnikov and Mirković on Frobenius decompositions for partial flag varieities. We are hopeful that it is an instance of a more general "$p$-uniformity" principle.

Embeddings of algebras in derived categories of surfaces

By a result of Orlov there always exists an embedding of the derived category of a finite-dimensional algebra of finite global dimension into the derived category of a high-dimensional smooth projective variety. In this article we give some restrictions on those algebras whose derived categories can be embedded into the bounded derived category of a smooth projective surface. This is then applied to obtain explicit results for hereditary algebras.

A reduction theorem for $τ$-rigid modules

We prove a theorem which gives a bijection between the support $τ$-tilting modules over a given finite-dimensional algebra $A$ and the support $τ$-tilting modules over $A/I$, where $I$ is the ideal generated by the intersection of the center of $A$ and the radical of $A$. This bijection is both explicit and well-behaved. We give various corollaries of this, with a particular focus on blocks of group rings of finite groups. In particular we show that there are $τ$-tilting finite wild blocks with more than one simple module. We then go on to classify all support $τ$-tilting modules for all algebras of dihedral, semidihedral and quaternion type, as defined by Erdmann, which include all tame blocks of group rings. Note that since these algebras are symmetric, this is the same as classifying all basic two-term tilting complexes, and it turns out that a tame block has at most $32$ different basic two-term tilting complexes. We do this by using the aforementioned reduction theorem, which reduces the problem to ten different algebras only depending on the ground field $k$, all of which happen to be string algebras. To deal with these ten algebras we give a combinatorial classification of all $τ$-rigid modules over (not necessarily symmetric) string algebras.

The representation theory of noncommutative $\mathcal{O}(\text{GL}_2)$

In our companion paper "The Manin Hopf algebra of a Koszul Artin-Schelter regular algebra is quasi-hereditary" we used the Tannaka-Krein formalism to study the universal coacting Hopf algebra aut(A) for a Koszul Artin-Schelter regular algebra A. In this paper we study in detail the case A=k[x,y]. In particular we give a more precise description of the standard and costandard representations of aut(A) as a coalgebra and we show that the latter can be obtained by induction from a Borel quotient algebra. Finally we give a combinatorial characterization of the simple aut(A)-representations as tensor products of end(A)-representations and their duals.

The Manin Hopf algebra of a Koszul Artin-Schelter regular algebra is quasi-hereditary

For any Koszul Artin-Schelter regular algebra A, we consider a version of the universal Hopf algebra aut(A) coacting on A, introduced by Manin. To study the representations (i.e. finite dimensional comodules) of this Hopf algebra, we use the Tannaka-Krein formalism. Specifically, we construct an explicit combinatorial rigid monoidal category U, equipped with a functor M to finite dimensional vector spaces such that aut(A)= coend_U(M). Using this pair (U,M) we show that aut(A) is quasi-hereditary as a coalgebra and in addition is derived equivalent to the representation category of U.
