Soft photon radiation and entanglement

We study the entanglement between soft and hard particles produced in generic scattering processes in QED. The reduced density matrix for the hard particles, obtained via tracing over the entire spectrum of soft photons, is shown to have a large eigenvalue, which governs the behavior of the Renyi entropies and of the non-analytic part of the entanglement entropy at low orders in perturbation theory. The leading perturbative entanglement entropy is logarithmically IR divergent. The coefficient of the IR divergence exhibits certain universality properties, irrespectively of the dressing of the asymptotic charged particles and the detailed properties of the initial state. In a certain kinematical limit, the coefficient is proportional to the cusp anomalous dimension in QED. For Fock basis computations associated with two-electron scattering, we derive an exact expression for the large eigenvalue of the density matrix in terms of hard scattering amplitudes, which is valid at any finite order in perturbation theory. As a result, the IR logarithmic divergences appearing in the expressions for the Renyi and entanglement entropies persist at any finite order of the perturbative expansion. To all orders, however, the IR logarithmic divergences exponentiate, rendering the large eigenvalue of the density matrix IR finite. The all-orders Renyi entropies (per unit time, per particle flux), which are shown to be proportional to the total inclusive cross-section in the initial state, are also free of IR divergences. The entanglement entropy, on the other hand, retains non-analytic, logarithmic behavior with respect to the size of the box (which provides the IR cutoff) even to all orders in perturbation theory.

The maximum turnaround radius for axisymmetric cosmic structures

Three simple idealised models are studied in order to develop some intuition about the leading order effect of non-sphericity on the maximum turnaround size $R_{\rm TA,max}$ of large scale bound cosmic structures. Two of them describe intrinsically axisymmetric static mass distributions whereas the other is the Kerr-de Sitter metric where the axisymmetry is generated due to the rotation of the structure. In all the cases the fractional change $δR_{\rm TA,max}(θ)/R^{(0)}_{\rm TA,max}$ of $R_{\rm TA,max}$ of a given structure, compared to a spherical one with the same mass $M$, depends on the polar angle $θ$ and is proportional to the product of the relevant eccentricity parameter, times the square of a small quantity. This quantity in the static examples is the ratio of two characteristic length scales, while in the spinning case it is the ratio $v_{\rm out}/c$ of the azimuthal speed of the outmost members of the structure, over the speed of light. Furthermore, the angular average $\langle δR_{\rm TA,max}(θ)/R^{(0)}_{\rm TA,max}\rangle$ is zero in the two static cases, while it is negative and proportional to ${\cal O}(v^2_{\rm out}/c^2)$ for the Kerr-de Sitter. Thus, $δR_{\rm TA,max}(θ)/R^{(0)}_{\rm TA,max}$ for an axisymmetric structure is very small for practically any value of the eccentricity parameter. We speculate about some possible further implications of our result on the maximum turn around radius of realistic cosmic structures.

IR dynamics and entanglement entropy

We consider scattering of Faddeev-Kulish electrons in QED and study the entanglement between the hard and soft particles in the final state at the perturbative level. The soft photon spectrum naturally splits into two parts: i) soft photons with energies less than a characteristic infrared scale $E_d$ present in the clouds accompanying the asymptotic charged particles, and ii) sufficiently low energy photons with energies greater than $E_d$, comprising the soft part of the emitted radiation. We construct the density matrix associated with tracing over the radiative soft photons and calculate the entanglement entropy perturbatively. We find that the entanglement entropy is free of any infrared divergences order by order in perturbation theory. On the other hand infrared divergences in the perturbative expansion for the entanglement entropy appear upon tracing over the entire spectrum of soft photons, including those in the clouds. To leading order the entanglement entropy is set by the square of the Fock basis amplitude for real single soft photon emission, which leads to a logarithmic infrared divergence when integrated over the photon momentum. We argue that the infrared divergences in the entanglement entropy (per particle flux per unit time) in this latter case persist to all orders in perturbation theory in the infinite volume limit.

Comments on the entropic gravity proposal

Explicit tests are presented of the conjectured entropic origin of the gravitational force. The gravitational force on a test particle in the vicinity of the horizon of a large Schwarzschild black hole in arbitrary spacetime dimensions is obtained as entropic force. The same conclusion can be reached for the cases of a large electrically charged black hole and a large slowly rotating Kerr black hole. The generalization along the same lines to a test mass in the field of an arbitrary spherical star is also studied and found not to be possible. Our results thus reinforce the argument that the entropic gravity proposal cannot account for the gravitational force in generic situations.

Cosmological screening and the phantom braneworld model

The scalar and vector cosmological perturbations at all length scales of our Universe are studied in the framework of the phantom braneworld model. The model is characterized by the parameter $Ω_M\equiv M^3/2m^2H_0$, with $M$ and $m$ the 5- and 4-dimensional Planck scales, respectively, and $H_0$ the Hubble parameter today, while $Ω_M\rightarrow 0$ recovers the $Λ\rm CDM$ model. Ignoring the backreaction due to the peculiar velocities and also the bulk cosmological constant, allows the explicit computation of the gravitational potentials, $Φ$ and $Ψ$. They exhibit exponentially decreasing screening behaviour characterized by a screening length which is a function of the quasidensity parameter $ Ω_M$.

Cosmic structure sizes in generic dark energy models

The maximum allowable size of a spherical cosmic structure as a function of its mass is determined by the maximum turn around radius $R_{\rm TA,max}$, the distance from its centre where the attraction on a radial test particle due to the spherical mass is balanced with the repulsion due to the ambient dark energy. In this work, we extend the existing results in several directions. (a) We first show that for $w\neq -1$, the expression for $R_{\rm TA, max}$ found earlier using the cosmological perturbation theory, can be derived using a static geometry as well. (b) In the generic dark energy model with arbitrary time dependent state parameter $w(t)$, taking into account the effect of inhomogeneities upon the dark energy as well, where it is shown that the data constrain $w(t={\rm today})>-2.3$, and (c) in the quintessence and the generalized Chaplygin gas models, both of which are shown to predict structure sizes consistent with observations.
