Standardized Images and Evaluation Metrics for Tomography

Advances in instrumentation and computation have enabled increasingly sophisticated tomographic reconstruction methods. However, existing evaluation practices -- often based on simple phantoms and global image metrics -- are limited in their ability to differentiate among modern high-fidelity reconstructions. A standardized, quantitative framework capable of revealing subtle yet meaningful differences is therefore required. We introduce such a framework, built upon two core components. The first is a set of four standardized reference images -- Source, Detector, Ideal, and Realistic -- each derived from physical modeling and representing a distinct stage in the imaging and reconstruction chain. The second is a suite of diagnostic and quantitative tools that remain sensitive in regimes where conventional metrics (e.g., SSIM, PSNR, NMSE, CC) tend to saturate. These include pixel-wise $χ^2$ and difference maps, their quantitative characterization, spectral decomposition of intensity distributions, and Region-of-Interest (RoI)-based metrics. Application of this framework to MLEM and RISE-1 reconstructions using software phantoms demonstrates its ability to expose discrepancies that might elude detection by conventional global metrics. While developed in the context of SPECT, the methodology generalizes to other tomographic modalities, providing a reproducible, interpretable, and physically grounded basis for evaluating reconstruction fidelity in the high-performance regime.

$\bar b \bar b u d$ and $\bar b \bar b u s$ tetraquarks from lattice QCD using symmetric correlation matrices with both local and scattering interpolating operators

We study the $\bar b \bar b u d$ tetraquark with quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 0(1^+)$ as well as the $\bar b \bar b u s$ tetraquark with quantum numbers $J^P = 1^+$ using lattice QCD. We improve on existing work by including both local and scattering interpolating operators on both sides of the correlation functions and use symmetric correlation matrices. This allows not only a reliable determination of the energies of QCD-stable tetraquark ground states, but also of low-lying excited states, which are meson-meson scattering states. The latter is particularly important for future finite-volume scattering analyses. Here, we perform chiral and continuum extrapolations of just the ground-state energies, for which finite-volume effects are expected to be small. Our resulting tetraquark binding energies, $-100 \pm 10\:^{+36}_{-51}\:\:{\rm MeV}$ for $\bar b \bar b u d$ and $-30 \pm 3\:^{+11}_{-31}\:\:{\rm MeV}$ for $\bar b \bar b u s$, are consistent with other recent lattice-QCD predictions.

Shallow Bound States and Hints for Broad Resonances with Quark Content $\bar{b}\bar{c}ud$ in $B$-$\bar{D}$ and $B^*$-$\bar{D}$ Scattering from Lattice QCD

We present the first determination of the energy dependence of the $B$-$\bar{D}$ and $B^*$-$\bar{D}$ isospin-0, $S$-wave scattering amplitudes both below and above the thresholds using lattice QCD, which allows us to investigate rigorously whether mixed bottom-charm $\bar{b}\bar{c}ud$ tetraquarks exist as bound states or resonances. The scattering phase shifts are obtained using Lüscher's method from the energy spectra in two different volumes. To ensure that no relevant energy level is missed, we use large, symmetric $7 \times 7$ and $8 \times 8$ correlation matrices that include, at both source and sink, $B^{(*)}$-$\bar{D}$ scattering operators with the lowest three or four possible back-to-back momenta in addition to local $\bar{b}\bar{c}ud$ operators. We fit the energy dependence of the extracted scattering phase shifts using effective-range expansions. We observe sharp peaks in the $B^{(*)}$-$\bar{D}$ scattering rates close to the thresholds, which are associated with shallow bound states, either genuine or virtual, a few MeV or less below the $B^{(*)}$-$\bar{D}$ thresholds. In addition, we find hints for resonances with masses of order $100$ MeV above the thresholds and decay widths of order $200$ MeV.

Elastic Nucleon-Pion scattering amplitudes in the $Δ$ channel at physical pion mass from Lattice QCD

We present an investigation of pion-nucleon elastic scattering in the $I\,(J^P) = \frac{3}{2}\,(\frac{3}{2}^+)$ channel using lattice QCD with degenerate up and down, strange and charm quarks with masses tuned to their physical values. We use an ensemble of twisted mass fermions with box size $L = 5.1\,\mathrm{fm}$ and lattice spacing $a = 0.08\,\mathrm{fm}$ and we consider the $πN$ system in rest and moving frames up to total momentum $\vec{P}^2 = 3\,(2π/L)^2$ = 0.17 GeV$^2$. We take into account the finite volume symmetries and $S$- and $P$-wave mixing, and use the Lüscher formalism to simultaneously constrain the $J = 1/2,\,\ell = 0$ and $J = 3/2,\,\ell = 1$ scattering amplitudes. We estimate the $Δ$ resonance pole in the $P$-wave channel as well as the $S$-wave isospin-3/2 scattering length.

Antiheavy-Antiheavy-Light-Light Four-Quark Bound States

We present our recent results on antiheavy-antiheavy-light-light tetraquark systems using lattice QCD. Our study of the $ \bar{b}\bar{b}us $ four-quark system with quantum numbers $ J^P=1^+ $ and the $ \bar{b}\bar{c}ud $ four-quark systems with $ I(J^P)=0(0^+) $ and $ I(J^P)=0(1^+) $ utilizes scattering operators at the sink to improve the extraction of the low-lying energy levels. We found a bound state for $ \bar{b}\bar{b}us $ with $ E_{\textrm{bind},\bar{b}\bar{b}us} = (-86 \pm 22 \pm 10)\,\textrm{MeV} $, but no indication for a bound state in both $ \bar{b}\bar{c}ud $ channels. Moreover, we show preliminary results for $ \bar{b}\bar{b}ud $ with $ I(J^P)=0(1^+) $, where we used scattering operators both at the sink and the source. We found a bound state and determined its infinite-volume binding energy with a scattering analysis, resulting in $ E_{\textrm{bind},\bar{b}\bar{b}ud} =(-103 \pm 8 )\,\textrm{MeV} $.

Lattice QCD study of antiheavy-antiheavy-light-light tetraquarks based on correlation functions with scattering interpolating operators both at the source and at the sink

We present first results of a recently started lattice QCD investigation of antiheavy-antiheavy-light-light tetraquark systems including scattering interpolating operators in correlation functions both at the source and at the sink. In particular, we discuss the importance of such scattering interpolating operators for a precise computation of the low-lying energy levels. We focus on the $\bar b \bar b u d$ four-quark system with quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 0(1^+)$, which has a ground state below the lowest meson-meson threshold. We carry out a scattering analysis using Lüscher's method to extrapolate the binding energy of the corresponding QCD-stable tetraquark to infinite spatial volume. Our calculation uses clover $u$, $d$ valence quarks and NRQCD $b$ valence quarks on gauge-link ensembles with HISQ sea quarks that were generated by the MILC collaboration.

Tetraquark interpolating fields in a lattice QCD investigation of the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$ meson

We investigate the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$ meson using lattice QCD and considering correlation functions of several $\bar{c} s$ two-quark and $\bar{c} s (\bar{u} u + \bar{d} d)$ four-quark interpolating fields. These interpolating fields generate different structures in color, spin and position space including quark-antiquark pairs, tetraquarks and two-meson scattering states. For our computation we use an ensemble simulated with pion mass $m_π\approx 0.296 \, \textrm{GeV}$ and spatial volume of extent $2.90 \, \textrm{fm}$. We find in addition to the expected spectrum of two-meson scattering states another state around $60 \, \textrm{MeV}$ below the $D K$ threshold, which we interpret as the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$ meson. This state couples predominantly to a quark-antiquark interpolating field and only weakly to a $D K$ two-meson interpolating field. The coupling to the tetraquark interpolating fields is essentially zero, rendering a tetraquark interpretation of the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$ meson rather unlikely. Moreover, we perform a scattering analysis using Lüscher's method and the effective range approximation to determine the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$ mass for infinite spatial volume. We find this mass $51 \, \textrm{MeV}$ below the $D K$ threshold, rather close to both our finite volume result and the experimentally observed value.

Lattice QCD investigation of the structure of the $a_0(980)$ meson

We investigate the quark content of the scalar meson $a_0(980)$ using lattice QCD. To this end we consider correlation functions of six different two- and four-quark interpolating fields. We evaluate all diagrams, including diagrams, where quarks propagate within a timeslice, e.g. with closed quark loops. We demonstrate that diagrams containing such closed quark loops have a drastic effect on the final results and, thus, may not be neglected. Our analysis shows that in addition to the expected spectrum of two-meson scattering states there is an additional energy level around the two-particle thresholds of $K + \bar{K}$ and $η+ π$. This additional state, which is a candidate for the $a_0(980)$ meson, couples to a quark-antiquark as well as to a diquark-antidiquark interpolating field, indicating that it is a superposition of an ordinary $\bar{q} q$ and a tetraquark structure. The analysis is performed using AMIAS, a novel statistical method based on the sampling of all possible spectral decompositions of the considered correlation functions, as well as solving standard generalized eigenvalue problems.

Using a new analysis method to extract excited states in the scalar meson sector

We explore a method to extract energy eigenstates, called Athens Model Independent Analysis Scheme (AMIAS), which is an alternative to solving standard Generalized Eigenvalue Problems (GEVP). The method is based on statistically sampling the space of fit parameters according to the $χ^2$ value of the fit function. The method is particularly suited for correlators or correlation matrices with strong contributions from several energy eigenstates and for rather noisy data, e.g. for correlators with disconnected and partly disconnected diagrams. We apply the method to the analysis of the $J^P = 0^+$ channel in the context of our investigation of the $a_0(980)$ meson and point out advantages compared to the GEVP.

Importance of closed quark loops for lattice QCD studies of tetraquarks

To investigate the light scalar tetraquark candidate $a_0(980)$ (quantum numbers $J^P =0^+$), a correlation matrix including a variety of two- and four-quark interpolating operators has to be computed. We discuss efficient techniques to compute the elements of this correlation matrix, in particular diagrams with closed quark loops. Furthermore, we present evidence that such diagrams are not negligible given our precision, and their contribution is essential to obtain physically meaningful results. In particular, we find indications of the existence of an "additional" state around the two-particle thresholds of $K+ \bar K$ and $η+π$, which could correspond to the $a_0(980)$ meson.

Critical thickness of an optimum extended surface characterized by uniform heat transfer coefficient

We consider the heat transfer problem associated with a periodic array of extended surfaces (fins) subjected to convection heat transfer with a uniform heat transfer coefficient. Our analysis differs from the classical approach as (i) we consider two-dimensional heat conduction and (ii) the base of the fin is included in the heat transfer process. The problem is modeled as an arbitrary two-dimensional channel whose upper surface is flat and isothermal, while the lower surface has a periodic array of extensions/fins which are subjected to heat convection with a uniform heat transfer coefficient. Using the generalized Schwarz-Christoffel transformation the domain is mapped onto a straight channel where the heat conduction problem is solved using the boundary element method. The boundary element solution is subsequently used to pose a shape optimization problem, i.e. an inverse problem, where the objective function is the normalized Shape Factor and the variables of the optimization are the parameters of the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation. Numerical optimization suggests that the optimum fin is infinitely thin and that there exists a critical Biot number that characterizes whether the addition of the fin would result in an enhancement of heat transfer. The existence of a critical Biot number was investigated for the case of rectangular fins. {\bf It is concluded that a rectangular fin is effective if its thickness is less than} $1.64 k/h$, where the $h$ is the heat transfer coefficient and $k$ is the thermal conductivity. This result is independent of both the thickness of the base and the length of the fin.

Excited State Effects in Nucleon Matrix Element Calculations

We perform a high-statistics precision calculation of nucleon matrix elements using an open sink method allowing us to explore a wide range of sink-source time separations. In this way the influence of excited states of nucleon matrix elements can be studied. As particular examples we present results for the nucleon axial charge $g_A$ and for the first moment of the isovector unpolarized parton distribution $ _{u-d}$. In addition, we report on preliminary results using the generalized eigenvalue method for nucleon matrix elements. All calculations are performed using $N_f=2+1+1$ maximally twisted mass Wilson fermions.

Electromagnetic form factors of the Delta baryon

We develop a methodology that enables us to extract accurately the electromagnetic Delta form factors and their momentum dependence. We test our approach in the quenched approximation as a preparation for a study using dynamical fermions. Our calculation of the four form factors covers pion masses between about 410 MeV and 560 MeV on lattices with a size of 2.9 fm and a lattice spacing 0.09 fm. From the form factors we are able to obtain estimates of the magnetic moment and the charge radius of the Delta, which we compare to existing experimental and theoretical results. Our non-zero result for the electric quadrupole form factor signals a deformation of the Delta, pointing to an oblate charge distribution.

The N to $Δ$ axial transition form factors in quenched and unquenched QCD

The four N to $Δ$ axial transition form factors are evaluated using quenched QCD, using two flavors of dynamical Wilson fermions and using domain wall valence fermions on three-flavor MILC configurations for pion masses down to 360 MeV. We provide a prediction for the parity violating asymmetry as a function of $Q^2$ and examine the validity of the non-diagonal Goldberger-Treiman relation.

A study of the N to Delta transition form factors in full QCD

The N to Delta transition form factors GM1, GE2 and GC2 are evaluated using dynamical MILC configurations and valence domain wall fermions at three values of quark mass corresponding to pion mass 606 MeV, 502 MeV and 364 MeV on lattices of spatial size $20^3$ and $28^3$. The unquenched results are compared to those obtained at similar pion mass in the quenched theory.

Description of resonances in light nuclei using a microscopic cluster model

We investigate resonances in light halo nuclei using a fully microscopic cluster model and the complex scaling method. We make use of the hermitian representation of the complex scaling method. The general structure of the cluster model is that of a correlation operator acting on a starting function that describes a number of neutrons relative to an alpha-particle. The correlation operator is expanded in terms of a small non-orthogonal set of Gaussian basis states and we make use of a simplified, central but state-dependent, interaction. The many-body integrals required for the computation are evaluated by a variational Monte-Carlo algorithm. We show how to obtain resonant states for both $^5$He and $^6$He.

Variational Monte Carlo for Microscopic Cluster Models

We examine the application of the Variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method to a cluster model for halo nuclei. Particular attention is paid to the error estimate in the presence of correlations in the underlying random walk. We analyse the required steps for a reliable application of the VMC in the case of a complicated many-body problem such as the direct solution of the nuclear hamiltonian with realistic interactions. We also examine the possibility of variance reduction through the `zero variance principle', paying particular attention to the complexity of the many-body problem.
