The strong form of Van der Waerden's conjecture via twisted Chowla

Determining the properties of a random polynomial has fuelled significant investigation over the past century. One driving force of this research is a 1936 paper of Van der Waerden. Fix $n \ge 3$ and let $E_n(B)$ be the number of monic, irreducible, non-$S_n$ polynomials $f = X^n + a_1 X^{n-1} + \cdots + a_n$ with $|a_j| \leq B$ for all $j$. A recent breakthrough of Bhargava bounds $E_n(B) \ll B^{n-1}$. This spectacularly resolves a conjecture of Van der Waerden, but leaves open its stronger form, namely that $E_n(B) = o(B^{n-1})$. Inspired by recent progress, we now prove this stronger form for all $n \ge 40$. Bhargava's result, together with work of Chow and Dietmann, essentially reduces the strong Van der Waerden conjecture to the claim that the number of polynomials $f$ with Galois group $A_n$ is $o(B^{n-1})$. We connect this claim to Chowla's conjecture, an area driving major mathematical progress. Indeed, we formulate a twisted function field version of Chowla's conjecture, and show how Van der Waerden's conjecture reduces to this conjecture for $n \ge 8$. Finally, we make significant progress towards this twisted Chowla conjecture, leading to our resolution of the strong form of Van der Waerden's conjecture for all $n \geq 40$.

Galois groups of reciprocal polynomials and the van der Waerden-Bhargava theorem

We study the Galois groups $G_f$ of degree $2n$ reciprocal (a.k.a. palindromic) polynomials $f$ of height at most $H$, finding that $G_f$ falls short of the maximal possible group $S_2 \wr S_n$ for a proportion of all $f$ bounded above and below by constant multiples of $H^{-1} \log H$, whether or not $f$ is required to be monic. This answers a 1998 question of Davis-Duke-Sun and extends Bhargava's 2023 resolution of van der Waerden's 1936 conjecture on the corresponding question for general polynomials. Unlike in that setting, the dominant contribution comes not from reducible polynomials but from those $f$ for which $(-1)^n f(1) f(-1)$ is a square, causing $G_f$ to lie in an index-$2$ subgroup.

Galois groups of reciprocal polynomials II: Twisted reciprocal polynomials

We study the Galois group $G_f$ of a random polynomial $f$ of height at most $H$ in the family of polynomials of degree $2n$ satisfying the twisted reciprocal relation $f(x) = x^{2n}/b^n \cdot f(b/x)$, which arise in a wide variety of applications. Our main result is a theorem of van der Waerden-Bhargava type: the probability that $G_f$ is not the full hyperoctahedral group $S_2 \wr S_n$ is $Θ(H^{-1}\log H)$, independent of $b$, with the leading-order group $G_1$ being of index $2$. This paper is a companion to a recent paper by the authors and Bertelli addressing reciprocal polynomials (i.e. the case $b = 1$).

Characterizing the support of semiclassical measures for higher-dimensional cat maps

Quantum cat maps are toy models in quantum chaos associated to hyperbolic symplectic matrices $A\in \operatorname{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{Z})$. The macroscopic limits of sequences of eigenfunctions of a quantum cat map are characterized by semiclassical measures on the torus $\mathbb{R}^{2n}/\mathbb{Z}^{2n}$. We show that if the characteristic polynomial of every power $A^k$ is irreducible over the rationals, then every semiclassical measure has full support. The proof uses an earlier strategy of Dyatlov-Jézéquel [arXiv:2108.10463] and the higher-dimensional fractal uncertainty principle of Cohen [arXiv:2305.05022]. Our irreducibility condition is generically true, in fact we show that asymptotically for $100\%$ of matrices $A$, the Galois group of the characteristic polynomial of $A$ is $S_2 \wr S_n$. When the irreducibility condition does not hold, we show that a semiclassical measure cannot be supported on a finite union of parallel non-coisotropic subtori. On the other hand, we give examples of semiclassical measures supported on the union of two transversal symplectic subtori for $n=2$, inspired by the work of Faure-Nonnenmacher-De Bièvre [arXiv:nlin/0207060] in the case $n=1$. This is complementary to the examples by Kelmer [arXiv:math-ph/0510079] of semiclassical measures supported on a single coisotropic subtorus.

The structure of the double discriminant

For a polynomial $f(x) = \sum_{i=0}^n a_i x^i$, we study the double discriminant $DD_{n,k} = \operatorname{disc}_{a_k} \operatorname{disc}_x f(x)$. This object has been well studied in algebraic geometry, but has been brought to recent prominence in number theory by its key role in the proof of the Bhargava--van der Waerden theorem. We bridge the knowledge gap for this object by proving an explicit factorization: $DD_{n,k}$ is the product of a square, a cube, and possibly a linear monomial. Our proof is entirely algebraic. We also investigate other aspects of this factorization.

Galois groups of random integer matrices

We study the number $M_n(T)$ be the number of integer $n\times n$ matrices $A$ with entries bounded in absolute value by $T$ such that the Galois group of characteristic polynomial of $A$ is not the full symmetric group $S_n$. One knows $M_n(T) \gg T^{n^2 - n + 1} \log T$, which we conjecture is sharp. We first use the large sieve to get $M_n(T) \ll T^{n^2 - 1/2}\log T$. Using Fourier analysis and the geometric sieve, as in Bhargava's proof of van der Waerden's conjecture, we improve this bound for some classes of $A$.

Improved bounds on number fields of small degree

We study the number of degree $n$ number fields with discriminant bounded by $X$. In this article, we improve an upper bound due to Schmidt on the number of such fields that was previously the best known upper bound for $6 \leq n \leq 94$.

Infinite intersections of doubling measures, weights, and function classes

A series of longstanding questions in harmonic analysis ask if the intersection of all prime ``$p$-adic versions" of an object, such as a doubling measure, or a Muckenhoupt or reverse Hölder weight, recovers the full object. Investigation into these questions was reinvigorated in 2019 by work of Boylan-Mills-Ward, culminating in showing that this recovery fails for a finite intersection in work of Anderson-Bellah-Markman-Pollard-Zeitlin. Via generalizing a new number-theoretic construction therein, we answer these questions.

On Polynomial Carleson operators along quadratic hypersurfaces

We prove that a maximally modulated singular oscillatory integral operator along a hypersurface defined by $(y,Q(y))\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, for an arbitrary non-degenerate quadratic form $Q$, admits an a priori bound on $L^p$ for all $1<p<\infty$, for each $n \geq 2$. This operator takes the form of a polynomial Carleson operator of Radon-type, in which the maximally modulated phases lie in the real span of $\{p_2,\ldots,p_d\}$ for any set of fixed real-valued polynomials $p_j$ such that $p_j$ is homogeneous of degree $j$, and $p_2$ is not a multiple of $Q(y)$. The general method developed in this work applies to quadratic forms of arbitrary signature, while previous work considered only the special positive definite case $Q(y)=|y|^2$.

Weakly porous sets and Muckenhoupt $A_p$ distance functions

We examine the class of weakly porous sets in Euclidean spaces. As our first main result we show that the distance weight $w(x)=\operatorname{dist}(x,E)^{-α}$ belongs to the Muckenhoupt class $A_1$, for some $α>0$, if and only if $E\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is weakly porous. We also give a precise quantitative version of this characterization in terms of the so-called Muckenhoupt exponent of $E$. When $E$ is weakly porous, we obtain a similar quantitative characterization of $w\in A_p$, for $1<p<\infty$, as well. At the end of the paper, we give an example of a set $E\subset\mathbb{R}$ which is not weakly porous but for which $w\in A_p\setminus A_1$ for every $0<α<1$ and $1<p<\infty$.

Arbitrary finite intersections of doubling measures and applications

Using a wide array of machinery from diverse fields across mathematics, we provide a construction of a measure on the real line which is doubling on all $n$-adic intervals for any finite list of $n\in\mathbb{N}$, yet not doubling overall. In particular, we extend previous results in the area, where only two coprime numbers $n$ were allowed, by using substantially new ideas. In addition, we provide several nontrivial applications to reverse Hölder weights, $A_p$ weights, Hardy spaces, BMO and VMO function classes, and connect our results with key principles and conjectures across number theory.

A Structure Theorem on Intersections of General Doubling Measures and Its Applications

We unite two themes in dyadic analysis and number theory by studying an analogue of the failure of the Hasse principle in harmonic analysis. Explicitly, we construct an explicit family of measures on the real line that are $p$-adic and $q$-adic doubling for any distinct primes $p$ and $q$, yet not doubling, and we apply these results to show analogous statements about the reverse Hölder and Muckenhoupt $A_p$ classes of weights. The proofs involve a delicate interplay among several geometric and number theoretic properties.

Discrete multilinear maximal functions and number theory

Many multilinear discrete operators are primed for pointwise decomposition; such decompositions give structural information but also an essentially optimal range of bounds. We study the (continuous) slicing method of Jeong and Lee -- which when debuted instantly gave sharp multilinear operator bounds -- in the discrete setting. Via several examples, number theoretic connections, pointed commentary, and a unified theory we hope that this useful technique will lead to further applications. This work generalizes, and was inspired by, the author's work with Palsson on a special case.

New bounds for discrete lacunary spherical averages

We show that the discrete lacunary spherical maximal function is bounded on $l^p(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ for all $p >\frac{d+1}{d-1}$. Our range is new in dimension 4, where it appears that little was previously known for general lacunary radii. Our technique follows that of Kesler-Lacey-Mena, using the Kloosterman refinement to improve the estimates in several places, which leads to an overall improvement in dimension 4.

The structure of weight and function classes with coprime bases

In a recent work of Anderson and Hu, the authors constructed a measure that was $p$-adic and $q$-adic doubling, for any primes $p$ and $q$, yet not doubling. This work relied heavily on a developed number theory framework. Here we develop this framework farther, which yields a measure that is $m$-adic and $n$-adic doubling for any coprime $m,n$, yet not doubling. Additionally we show several new applications to the intersection of weight and the function classes.

Quantitative Hilbert irreducibility and almost prime values of polynomial discriminants

We study two polynomial counting questions in arithmetic statistics via a combination of Fourier analytic and arithmetic methods. First, we obtain new quantitative forms of Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem for degree $n$ polynomials $f$ with $\mathrm{Gal}(f) \subseteq A_n$. We study this both for monic polynomials and non-monic polynomials. Second, we study lower bounds on the number of degree $n$ monic polynomials with almost prime discriminants, as well as the closely related problem of lower bounds on the number of degree $n$ number fields with almost prime discriminants.

A structure theorem on doubling measures with different bases

In this paper, we prove a structure theorem for the infinite union of $n$-adic doubling measures via techniques which involve far numbers. Our approach extends the results of Wu in 1998, and as a by product, we also prove a classification result related to normal numbers.
