The Holonomy Inverse Problem

Let $(M,g)$ be a smooth Anosov Riemannian manifold and $\mathcal{C}^\sharp$ the set of its primitive closed geodesics. Given a Hermitian vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$ equipped with a unitary connection $\nabla^{\mathcal{E}}$, we define $\mathcal{T}^\sharp(\mathcal{E}, \nabla^{\mathcal{E}})$ as the sequence of traces of holonomies of $\nabla^{\mathcal{E}}$ along elements of $\mathcal{C}^\sharp$. This descends to a homomorphism on the additive moduli space $\mathbb{A}$ of connections up to gauge $\mathcal{T}^\sharp: (\mathbb{A}, \oplus) \to \ell^\infty(\mathcal{C}^\sharp)$, which we call the $\textit{primitive trace map}$. It is the restriction of the well-known $\textit{Wilson loop}$ operator to primitive closed geodesics. The main theorem of this paper shows that the primitive trace map $\mathcal{T}^\sharp$ is locally injective near generic points of $\mathbb{A}$ when $\dim(M) \geq 3$. We obtain global results in some particular cases: flat bundles, direct sums of line bundles, and general bundles in negative curvature under a spectral assumption which is satisfied in particular for connections with small curvature. As a consequence of the main theorem, we also derive a spectral rigidity result for the connection Laplacian. The proofs are based on two new ingredients: a Livšic-type theorem in hyperbolic dynamical systems showing that the cohomology class of a unitary cocycle is determined by its trace along closed primitive orbits, and a theorem relating the local geometry of $\mathbb{A}$ with the Pollicott-Ruelle resonance near zero of a certain natural transport operator.

Marked boundary rigidity for surfaces of Anosov type

Let $Σ$ be a smooth compact connected oriented surface with boundary. A metric on $Σ$ is said to be of Anosov type if it has strictly convex boundary, no conjugate points, and a hyperbolic trapped set. We prove that two metrics of Anosov type with the same marked boundary distance are isometric (via a boundary-preserving isometry isotopic to the identity). As a corollary, we retrieve the boundary distance rigidity result for simple disks of Pestov and Uhlmann [arXiv:math/0305280]. The proof rests on a new transfer principle showing that, in any dimension, the marked length spectrum rigidity conjecture implies the marked boundary distance rigidity conjecture under the existence of a suitable isometric embedding into a closed Anosov manifold. Such an isometric embedding result for open surfaces of Anosov type was proved by the first author with Chen and Gogolev in [arXiv:2009.13665] while the marked length spectrum rigidity for closed Anosov surfaces was established by the second author with Guillarmou and Paternain in [arXiv:2303.12007].

Isospectral connections, ergodicity of frame flows, and polynomial maps between spheres

We show that on closed negatively curved Riemannian manifolds with simple length spectrum, the spectrum of the Bochner Laplacian determines both the isomorphism class of the vector bundle and the connection up to gauge under a low-rank assumption. We also show that flows of frames on low-rank frame bundles extending the geodesic flow in negative curvature are ergodic whenever the bundle admits no holonomy reduction. This is achieved by exhibiting a link between these problems and the classification of polynomial maps between spheres in real algebraic geometry.

Local lens rigidity for manifolds of Anosov type

The lens data of a Riemannian manifold with boundary is the collection of lengths of geodesics with endpoints on the boundary together with their incoming and outgoing vectors. We show that negatively-curved Riemannian manifolds with strictly convex boundary are locally lens rigid in the following sense: if $g_0$ is such a metric, then any metric $g$ sufficiently close to $g_0$ and with same lens data is isometric to $g_0$, up to a boundary-preserving diffeomorphism. More generally, we consider the same problem for a wider class of metrics with strictly convex boundary, called metrics of Anosov type. We prove that the same rigidity result holds within that class in dimension $2$ and in any dimension, further assuming that the curvature is non-positive.

Correspondence between Pestov and Weitzenböck identities

The aim of this note is to establish the correspondence between the twisted localized Pestov identity on the unit tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold and the Weitzenböck identity for twisted symmetric tensors on the manifold.

On the ergodicity of unitary frame flows on Kähler manifolds

Let $(M,g,J)$ be a closed Kähler manifold with negative sectional curvature and complex dimension $m := \dim_{\mathbb{C}} M \geq 2$. In this article, we study the unitary frame flow, that is, the restriction of the frame flow to the principal $\mathrm{U}(m)$-bundle $F_{\mathbb{C}}M$ of unitary frames. We show that if $m \geq 6$ is even, and $m \neq 28$, there exists $λ(m) \in (0, 1)$ such that if $(M, g, J)$ has negative $λ(m)$-pinched holomorphic sectional curvature, then the unitary frame flow is ergodic and mixing. The constants $λ(m)$ satisfy $λ(6) = 0.9330...$, $\lim_{m \to +\infty} λ(m) = \tfrac{11}{12} = 0.9166...$, and $m \mapsto λ(m)$ is decreasing. This extends to the even-dimensional case the results of Brin-Gromov who proved ergodicity of the unitary frame flow on negatively-curved compact Kähler manifolds of odd complex dimension.

Geodesic Lévy flights and expected stopping time for random searches

We give an analytic description for the infinitesimal generator constructed by Applebaum-Estrade for Lévy flights on a broad class of closed Riemannian manifolds including all negatively-curved manifolds, the flat torus and the sphere. Various properties of the associated semigroup and the asymptotics of the expected stopping time for Lévy flight based random searches for small targets, also known as the narrow capture problem, are then obtained using our newfound understanding of the infinitesimal generator. Our study also relates to the Lévy flight foraging hypothesis in the field of biology as we compute the expected time for finding a small target by using the Lévy flight random search. A similar calculation for Brownian motion on surfaces was done in [arXiv:2209.12425].

Local rigidity of manifolds with hyperbolic cusps II. Nonlinear theory

This article is the second in a series of two whose aim is to extend a recent result of Guillarmou-Lefeuvre [arXiv:1806.04218] on the local rigidity of the marked length spectrum from the case of compact negatively-curved Riemannian manifolds to the case of manifolds with hyperbolic cusps. We deal with the nonlinear version of the problem and prove that such manifolds are locally rigid for nonlinear perturbations of the metric that slightly decrease at infinity. Our proof relies on the linear theory addressed in [arXiv:1907.01809] and on a careful analytic study of the generalized X-ray transform operator $Π_2$. In particular, we prove that the latter fits in the microlocal theory for cusp manifolds developed in [arXiv:1411.5083, arXiv:1712.07832, arXiv:1907.01809].

Radial source estimates in Hölder-Zygmund spaces for hyperbolic dynamics

We prove a radial source estimate in Hölder-Zygmund spaces for uniformly hyperbolic dynamics (also known as Anosov flows), in the spirit of Dyatlov-Zworski. The main consequence is a new linear stability estimate for the marked length spectrum rigidity conjecture, also known as the Burns-Katok conjecture. We show in particular that in any dimension $\geq 2$, in the space of negatively-curved metrics, $C^{3+\varepsilon}$-close metrics with same marked length spectrum are isometric. This improves recent works of Guillarmou-Knieper and the second author. As a byproduct, this approach also allows to retrieve various regularity statements known in hyperbolic dynamics and usually based on Journé's lemma: the smooth Livšic Theorem of de La Llave-Marco-Moriyón, the smooth Livšic cocycle theorem of Niticā-Török for general (finite-dimensional) Lie groups, the rigidity of the regularity of the foliation obtained by Hasselblatt and others.

Geodesic stretch, pressure metric and marked length spectrum rigidity

We refine the recent local rigidity result for the marked length spectrum obtained by the first and third author in \cite{Guillarmou-Lefeuvre-18} and give an alternative proof using the geodesic stretch between two Anosov flows and some uniform estimate on the variance appearing in the central limit theorem for Anosov geodesic flows. In turn, we also introduce a new pressure metric on the space of isometry classes, that reduces to the Weil-Peterson metric in the case of Teichmüller space and is related to the works of \cite{McMullen,Bridgeman-Canary-Labourie-Sambarino-15}.

Local rigidity of manifolds with hyperbolic cusps I. Linear theory and microlocal tools

This paper is the first in a series of two articles whose aim is to extend a recent result of Guillarmou-Lefeuvre on the local rigidity of the marked length spectrum from the case of compact negatively-curved Riemannian manifolds to the case of manifolds with hyperbolic cusps. In this first paper, we deal with the linear (or infinitesimal) version of the problem and prove that such manifolds are spectrally rigid for compactly supported deformations. More precisely, we prove that the X-ray transform on symmetric solenoidal 2-tensors is injective. In order to do so, we expand the microlocal calculus developed by Bonthonneau and Bonthonneau-Weich to be able to invert pseudodifferential operators on Sobolev and Hölder-Zygmund spaces modulo compact remainders. This theory has an interest on its own and is extensively used in the second paper [arXiv:1910.02154] in order to deal with the nonlinear problem.

Generic dynamical properties of connections on vector bundles

Given a smooth Hermitian vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$ over a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, we study generic properties of unitary connections $\nabla^{\mathcal{E}}$ on the vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$. First of all, we show that twisted Conformal Killing Tensors (CKTs) are generically trivial when $\dim(M) \geq 3$, answering an open question of Guillarmou-Paternain-Salo-Uhlmann. In negative curvature, it is known that the existence of twisted CKTs is the only obstruction to solving exactly the twisted cohomological equations which may appear in various geometric problems such as the study of transparent connections. The main result of this paper says that these equations can be generically solved. As a by-product, we also obtain that the induced connection $\nabla^{\mathrm{End}(\mathcal{E})}$ on the endomorphism bundle $\mathrm{End}(\mathcal{E})$ has generically trivial CKTs as long as $(M,g)$ has no nontrivial CKTs on its trivial line bundle. Eventually, we show that, under the additional assumption that $(M,g)$ is Anosov (i.e. the geodesic flow is Anosov on the unit tangent bundle), the connections are generically $\textit{opaque}$, namely there are no non-trivial subbundles of $\mathcal{E}$ which are generically preserved by parallel transport along geodesics. The proofs rely on the introduction of a new microlocal property for (pseudo)differential operators called $\textit{operators of uniform divergence type}$, and on perturbative arguments from spectral theory (especially on the theory of Pollicott-Ruelle resonances in the Anosov case).

Classical and microlocal analysis of the X-ray transform on Anosov manifolds

We complete the microlocal study of the geodesic X-ray transform on Riemannian manifolds with Anosov geodesic flow initiated by Guillarmou and pursued by Guillarmou and the second author. We prove new stability estimates and clarify some properties of the operator $Π_m$, the generalized X-ray transform. These estimates rely on a refined version of the Livsic theorem for Anosov flows, especially on a new quantitative finite time Livsic theorem.

On the s-injectivity of the X-ray transform on manifolds with hyperbolic trapped set

For smooth compact connected manifolds with strictly convex boundary, no conjugate points and a hyperbolic trapped set, we prove an equivalence principle concerning the injectivity of the X-ray transform $I_m$ on symmetric solenoidal tensors and the surjectivity of an operator ${π_m}_*$ on the set of solenoidal tensors. This allows us to establish the injectivity of the X-ray transform on solenoidal tensors of any order in the case of a surface satisfying these assumptions.

The marked length spectrum of Anosov manifolds

In all dimensions, we prove that the marked length spectrum of a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with Anosov geodesic flow and non-positive curvature locally determines the metric in the sense that two close enough metrics with the same marked length spectrum are isometric. In addition, we provide a completely new stability estimate quantifying how the marked length spectrum control the distance between the metrics. In dimension $2$ we obtain similar results for general metrics with Anosov geodesic flows. We also solve locally a rigidity conjecture of Croke relating volume and marked length spectrum for the same category of metrics. Finally, by a compactness argument, we show that the set of negatively curved metrics (up to isometry) with the same marked length spectrum and with curvature in a bounded set of $C^\infty$ is finite.
