Log geometry and lifting rational points

For a morphism $f : X \to Y$ of schemes, we give a tropical criterion for which points of $Y$ (valued in a field, discrete valuation ring, number ring, or Dedekind domain) lift to $X$. Our criterion extends the firmaments of Abramovich to a wide range of morphisms, even logarithmic stable maps.

Moduli of finite flat torsors over nodal curves

We show that log flat torsors over a family $X/S$ of nodal curves under a finite flat commutative group scheme $G/S$ are classified by maps from the Cartier dual of $G$ to the log Jacobian of $X$. We deduce that fppf torsors on the smooth fibres of $X/S$ can be extended to global log flat torsors under some regularity hypotheses.

The many faces of a logarithmic scheme

A standard assumption in the study of logarithmic structures is "fineness", but this assumption is not preserved by intersections, fiber products, and more general limits. We explain how a coherent logarithmic scheme $X$ has a natural decomposition into "fine faces" -- a collection of fine logarithmic subschemes. This allows for importation of the techniques of tropical geometry into the study of more general logarithmic schemes. We explain the relevance of the construction in enumerative geometry and moduli via a range of examples. Techniques developed in the study of binomial schemes lead to effective algorithms for computing the fine faces.

Models of Jacobians of curves

We show that the Jacobians of prestable curves over toroidal varieties always admit Néron models. These models are rarely quasi-compact or separated, but we also give a complete classification of quasi-compact separated group-models of such Jacobians. In particular we show the existence of a maximal quasi-compact separated group model, which we call the saturated model, which has the extension property for all torsion sections. The Néron model and the saturated model coincide over a Dedekind base, so the saturated model gives an alternative generalisation of the classical notion of Néron models to higher-dimensional bases; in the general case we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Néron model and saturated model to coincide. The key result, from which most others descend, is that the logarithmic Jacobian of \cite{Molcho2018The-logarithmic} is a log Neron model of the Jacobian.

Néron models of Jacobians over bases of arbitrary dimension

We work with a smooth relative curve $X_U/U$ with nodal reduction over an excellent and locally factorial scheme $S$. We show that blowing up a nodal model of $X_U$ in the ideal sheaf of a section yields a new nodal model, and describe how these models relate to each other. We construct a Néron model for the Jacobian of $X_U$, and describe it locally on $S$ as a quotient of the Picard space of a well-chosen nodal model. We provide a combinatorial criterion for the Néron model to be separated.
