Elliptic $b$-Hurwitz theory and Jack heat trace

We study a deformation of the central heat trace on $\mathrm U(N)$ obtained by deforming Schur polynomials to Jack polynomials, and prove that it admits an asymptotic expansion to arbitrary order. Its coefficients are governed by elliptic $b$-Hurwitz numbers, which are genus-one counterparts of the $b$-Hurwitz theory of Chapuy and Dołęga \cite{ChapuyDolega22}. We construct the associated elliptic $b$-Hurwitz theory by means of generalized coverings on a torus and identify it with the genus-one closure of the genus-zero simple $b$-Hurwitz theory. At $b=0$ the construction recovers ordinary elliptic Hurwitz theory, while at $b=1$ it gives an automorphism-weighted geometric interpretation of the connected and disconnected twisted elliptic Hurwitz numbers of Hahn--Markwig \cite{HahnMarkwig26}. Our results extend the topological expansion obtained in the classical case in \cite{LemMai25,LM2} and take the form of a coupling between chiral and antichiral elliptic $b$-Hurwitz generating functions.

Universality of two-dimensional Markovian holonomy fields

We prove a universality theorem for a broad class of two-dimensional gauge theories on compact surfaces. Each admissible conjugation-invariant Lévy process on a compact connected Lie group determines a universality class of lattice gauge theories whose continuum limit is the associated Markovian holonomy process. Our result can be seen as a gauge-theoretic analogue of invariance principles for random walks and Lévy processes. This framework includes the Yang--Mills holonomy process and the standard heat-kernel (Villain), Wilson, and Manton lattice actions. The proof uses state-sum formulas of independent interest, separating action-dependent spectral coefficients from action-independent topological coefficients determined by the surface and the marked ribbon type of the loop configuration.

Universal dualities for Wilson loops in lattice Yang-Mills

We identify a universal finite-$N$ structure underlying Wilson loop expectations in lattice Yang--Mills, in any dimension $d\geq 2$, for gauge group $\mathrm{U}(N)$, and for arbitrary smooth central plaquette actions. The starting point is a state-sum expansion in plaquette labels by irreducible representations, in which each term factorizes into an action-dependent spectral weight and an action-independent topological coefficient. We then analyze these coefficients in three exact ways: as a gauge/string expansion over decorated spanning surfaces, as a local spin-foam/channel model on the dual incidence graph, and as a universal finite-$N$ master loop equation that closes on the coefficient side. As a consequence, several recent Wilson-action results are recovered as specializations of our broader action-agnostic framework. In a companion work, this framework is used to construct the higher-dimensional heat-kernel master field at strong coupling and to prove an area-law bound.

The heat-kernel master field on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ at strong coupling

We solve large-$N$ Yang--Mills theory on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, for every $d\geq2$, at strong coupling, for structure group $\mathrm U(N)$ and for the heat-kernel action. More precisely, we prove that normalized Wilson loop expectations have infinite-volume large-$N$ limits, factorize at leading order, and admit an all-order $1/N$-expansion with exponentially local coefficients, whose leading order characterizes the master field. We also prove an area-law upper bound for the heat-kernel master field, with a stronger coefficientwise version. The proof is based on a rooted heat-kernel master loop equation. Unlike the Wilson-action equation or the two-dimensional Makeenko--Migdal equation, this equation does not close on Wilson loop observables alone; it closes on an extended space of loop observables coupled to compactly supported plaquette decorations. We prove a strong-coupling, order-truncated rooted trajectory expansion and then identify its leading term with the master field. The main inputs are the universal finite-$N$ duality formulas developed in the companion paper \cite{Lem26a} and large-$N$ heat-kernel estimates from \cite{LemMai25,LM2}.

Monte Carlo methods on compact complex manifolds using Bergman kernels

In this paper, we propose a new randomized method for numerical integration on a compact complex manifold with respect to a continuous volume form. Taking for quadrature nodes a suitable determinantal point process, we build an unbiased Monte Carlo estimator of the integral of any $\mathscr{C}^1$ function, and show that the estimator satisfies a central limit theorem, with a faster rate than under independent sampling. In particular, seeing a complex manifold of dimension $d$ as a real manifold of dimension $d_\mathbb{R}=2d$, the mean squared error for $N$ quadrature nodes decays as $N^{-1-2/d_{\mathbb{R}}}$; this is faster than previous DPP-based quadratures and reaches the optimal worst-case rate investigated by \cite{Bak} in Euclidean spaces. The determinantal point process we use is characterized by its kernel, which is the Bergman kernel of a holomorphic Hermitian line bundle, and we build heavily on the work of Berman that led to the central limit theorem in \citep{Ber7}. We provide numerical illustrations for the Riemann sphere.

The central heat trace on large compact classical groups

We study the large-$N$ asymptotics of the central trace of the heat kernel on compact classical groups. For every classical family $G_N\subset \mathrm{GL}_N(\C)$, we prove a full large-$N$ asymptotic expansion, using a highest weights/partitions correspondence adapted to the large-rank regime, under which the eigenvalues of the Laplace--Beltrami operator stabilize as observables in the algebra of shifted symmetric functions. Then, we prove a random surface representation of the trace in terms of ramified coverings of the torus. We provide two independent applications: an explicit large-rank counting law for the Casimir spectrum, with exponential Hardy--Ramanujan-type growth in contrast with the polynomial behavior of Weyl's law at fixed rank, and a rigorous probabilistic formulation of the Yang--Mills/Hurwitz duality on a two-dimensional torus initiated by Gross and Taylor, completing a previous work of the authors. We also extend this duality to a Yang--Mills/Gromov--Witten duality by expressing the coefficients of the central heat trace as explicit functionals of the generating function of Gromov--Witten invariants.

Determinantal point processes on complex manifolds: Construction and limit theorems

We develop a coordinate-free probabilistic framework for determinantal point processes associated with Bergman kernels on compact complex manifolds. The basic issue is that Bergman kernels are naturally line-bundle-valued: $B_k(x,y)\in\operatorname{Hom}(L_y^k,L_x^k)$. Hence the usual determinantal formula for correlation functions is not literally a scalar determinant unless one first gives it an intrinsic meaning. We rigorously define this determinant and prove that every finite-dimensional Hilbert space of sections of a Hermitian line bundle gives rise to a genuine finite-rank projection determinantal point process on the base manifold. We then isolate a collection of finite-dimensional transfer principles showing how diagonal asymptotics, near-diagonal asymptotics, Schur complements, Toeplitz trace expansions and determinant asymptotics are converted into probabilistic statements. Specializing to $H^0(M,L^k)$, this gives the Bergman ensemble as the geometric analogue of an orthogonal polynomial ensemble, and some of the transfer principles allow us to recover previously known results of Berman.

Two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory via integrable probability

In this paper, we review the construction and large $N$ study of the continuous two-dimensional Yang--Mills theory with gauge group $\mathrm{U}(N)$ through probability, combinatorics and representation theory. In the first part, we define the continuous Yang--Mills measure using Markovian holonomy fields, following a construction by Lévy, then we show in the second part how to derive the character expansion of the partition function for any compact structure group from this setting. We continue with two developments obtained in the last few years by Dahlqvist, Lemoine, Lévy and Maïda with similar approaches with respect to the partition function: its large-$N$ asymptotics on all compact surfaces for the structure group $\mathrm{U}(N)$, and its $\frac{1}{N}$ expansion on a torus with an interpretation in terms of random surfaces.

Almost flat highest weights and application to Wilson loops on compact surfaces

We derive new formulas for the expectation and variance of Wilson loops for any contractible simple loop on a compact orientable surface of genus $1$ and higher, in the model of two-dimensional Yang--Mills theory with structure group $\mathrm{U}(N)$. They are written in terms of a Gaussian measure on the dual of $\mathrm{U}(N)$ introduced recently by the author and M. Maïda \cite{LM3}. From these formulas, we prove a quantitative result on the convergence of the expectation and variance as $N$ tends to infinity, refining a result of the author and A. Dahlqvist \cite{DL}. We finally derive the large $g$ limit of the Wilson loop expectation and variance, by analogy with the study of integrals on moduli spaces of compact hyperbolic surfaces. Surprisingly, the variance does not vanish in this regime, but there are no nontrivial fluctuations of any order.

Large N limit of Yang-Mills partition function and Wilson loops on compact surfaces

We compute the Large N limit of several objects related to the two-dimensional Euclidean Yang-Mills measure on compact connected orientable surfaces of genus larger or equal to one, with a structure group taken among the classical groups of order N. Our result shows the convergence of all Wilson loops for all loops within a topological disc and all simple loops.

Gaussian measure on the dual of $\mathrm{U}(N)$, random partitions, and topological expansion of the partition function

We study a Gaussian measure with parameter $q\in(0,1)$ on the dual of the unitary group of size $N$: we prove that a random highest weight under this measure is the coupling of two independent $q$-uniform random partitions $α,β$ and a random highest weight of $\mathrm{U}(1)$. We prove deviation inequalities for the $q$-uniform measure, and use them to show that the coupling of random partitions under the Gaussian measure vanishes in the limit $N\to\infty$. We also prove that the partition function of this measure admits an asymptotic expansion in powers of $1/N$, and that this expansion is topological, in the sense that its coefficients are related to the enumeration of ramified coverings of elliptic curves. It provides a rigorous proof of the gauge/string duality for the Yang-Mills theory on a 2D torus with gauge group $\mathrm{U}(N),$ advocated by Gross and Taylor \cite{GT,GT2}.

Large N limit of the Yang-Mills measure on compact surfaces II: Makeenko-Migdal equations and planar master field

This paper considers the large N limit of Wilson loops for the two-dimensional Euclidean Yang-Mills measure on all orientable compact surfaces of genus larger or equal to one, with a structure group given by a classical compact matrix Lie group. We show their convergence for all loops on the torus and give a conjecture supported by partial results for other surfaces.

Large $N$ behaviour of the two-dimensional Yang-Mills partition function

We compute the large N limit of the partition function of the Euclidean Yang--Mills measure with structure group SU(N) or U(N) on all closed compact surfaces, orientable or not, excepted for the sphere and the projective plane. This limit is finite as opposed to the case of the sphere and presumably the projective plane. We expect that the results we present might give an insight towards the master field on these surfaces.
