Gradient estimates for heat kernels and harmonic functions

Let $(X,d,μ)$ be a doubling metric measure space endowed with a Dirichlet form $\E$ deriving from a "carré du champ". Assume that $(X,d,μ,\E)$ supports a scale-invariant $L^2$-Poincaré inequality. In this article, we study the following properties of harmonic functions, heat kernels and Riesz transforms for $p\in (2,\infty]$: (i) $(G_p)$: $L^p$-estimate for the gradient of the associated heat semigroup; (ii) $(RH_p)$: $L^p$-reverse Hölder inequality for the gradients of harmonic functions; (iii) $(R_p)$: $L^p$-boundedness of the Riesz transform ($p<\infty$); (iv) $(GBE)$: a generalised Bakry-Émery condition. We show that, for $p\in (2,\infty)$, (i), (ii) (iii) are equivalent, while for $p=\infty$, (i), (ii), (iv) are equivalent. Moreover, some of these equivalences still hold under weaker conditions than the $L^2$-Poincaré inequality. Our result gives a characterisation of Li-Yau's gradient estimate of heat kernels for $p=\infty$, while for $p\in (2,\infty)$ it is a substantial improvement as well as a generalisation of earlier results by Auscher-Coulhon-Duong-Hofmann [7] and Auscher-Coulhon [6]. Applications to isoperimetric inequalities and Sobolev inequalities are given. Our results apply to Riemannian and sub-Riemannian manifolds as well as to non-smooth spaces, and to degenerate elliptic/parabolic equations in these settings.

Riesz transforms for bounded Laplacians on graphs

We study several problems related to the $\ell^p$ boundedness of Riesz transforms for graphs endowed with so-called bounded Laplacians. Introducing a proper notion of gradient of functions on edges, we prove for $p\in(1,2]$ an $\ell^p$ estimate for the gradient of the continuous time heat semigroup, an $\ell^p$ interpolation inequality as well as the $\ell^p$ boundedness of the modified Littlewood-Paley-Stein functions for all graphs with bounded Laplacians. This yields an analogue to Dungey's results in [Dungey08] while removing some additional assumptions. Coming back to the classical notion of gradient, we give a counterexample to the interpolation inequality hence to the boundedness of Riesz transforms for bounded Laplacians for $1<p<2$. Finally, we prove the boundedness of the Riesz transform for $1< p<\infty$ under the assumption of positive spectral gap.

Gaussian heat kernel estimates: from functions to forms

On a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold satisfying the volume doubling property, we give conditions on the negative part of the Ricci curvature that ensure that, unless there are harmonic one-forms, the Gaussian heat kernel upper estimate on functions transfers to one-forms. These conditions do no entail any constraint on the size of the Ricci curvature, only on its decay at infinity.

Sobolev Algebra Counterexamples

In the Euclidean setting the Sobolev spaces $W^{α,p}\cap L^\infty$ are algebras for the pointwise product when $α>0$ and $p\in(1,\infty)$. This property has recently been extended to a variety of geometric settings. We produce a class of fractal examples where it fails for a wide range of the indices $α,p$.

Regularisation effects of nonlinear semigroups

One introduces natural and simple methods to deduce $L^{s}$-$L^{\infty}$-re\-gularisation estimates for $1\le s< \infty$ of nonlinear semigroups holding uniformly for all time with sharp exponents from natural Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities. From $L^{q}$-$L^{r}$ Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities, $1\le q, r\le \infty$, one deduces $L^{q}$-$L^{r}$ estimates for the semigroup. New nonlinear interpolation techniques of independent interest are introduced in order to extrapolate such estimates to $L^{\tilde{q}}$-$L^{\infty}$ estimates for some $\tilde{q}$, $1\le \tilde{q}<\infty$. Finally one is able to extrapolate to $L^{s}$-$L^{\infty}$ estimates for $1\le s<q$. The theory developed in this monograph allows to work with minimal regularity assumptions on solutions of nonlinear parabolic boundary value problems as illustrated in a plethora of examples including nonlocal diffusion processes.

Riesz transform for $1 \leq p \le 2$ without Gaussian heat kernel bound

We study the $L^p$ boundedness of Riesz transform as well as the reverse inequality on Riemannian manifolds and graphs under the volume doubling property and a sub-Gaussian heat kernel upper bound. We prove that the Riesz transform is then bounded on $L^p$ for $1 \textless{} p \textless{} 2$, which shows that Gaussian estimates of the heat kernel are not a necessary condition for this.In the particular case of Vicsek manifolds and graphs, we show that the reverse inequality does not hold for $1 \textless{} p \textless{} 2$. This yields a full picture of the ranges of $p\in (1,+\infty)$ for which respectively the Riesz transform is $L^p$ -bounded and the reverse inequality holds on $L^p$ on such manifolds and graphs. This picture is strikingly different from the Euclidean one.

Sobolev algebras through heat kernel estimates

On a doubling metric measure space $(M,d,μ)$ endowed with a "carré du champ", let $\mathcal{L}$ be the associated Markov generator and $\dot L^{p}_α(M,\mathcal{L},μ)$ the corresponding homogeneous Sobolev space of order $0<α<1$ in $L^p$, $1 0}$ for the spaces $\dot L^{p}_α(M,\mathcal{L},μ) \cap L^\infty(M,μ)$ to be algebras for the pointwise product. Two approaches are developed, one using paraproducts (relying on extrapolation to prove their boundedness) and a second one through geometrical square functionals (relying on sharp estimates involving oscillations). A chain rule and a paralinearisation result are also given. In comparison with previous results ([29,11]), the main improvements consist in the fact that we neither require any Poincaré inequalities nor $L^p$-boundedness of Riesz transforms, but only $L^p$-boundedness of the gradient of the semigroup. As a consequence, in the range $p\in(1,2]$, the Sobolev algebra property is shown under Gaussian upper estimates of the heat kernel only.

Gaussian heat kernel bounds through elliptic Moser iteration

On a doubling metric measure space endowed with a "carré du champ", we consider $L^p$ estimates $(G_p)$ of the gradient of the heat semigroup and scale-invariant $L^p$ Poincaré inequalities $(P_p)$. We show that the combination of $(G_p)$ and $(P_p)$ for $p\ge 2$ always implies two-sided Gaussian heat kernel bounds. The case $p=2$ is a famous theorem of Saloff-Coste, of which we give a shorter proof, without parabolic Moser iteration. We also give a more direct proof of the main result in \cite{HS}. This relies in particular on a new notion of $L^p$ Hölder regularity for a semigroup and on a characterization of $(P_2)$ in terms of harmonic functions.

A new approach to pointwise heat kernel upper bounds on doubling metric measure spaces

On doubling metric measure spaces endowed with a strongly local regular Dirichlet form, we show some characterisations of pointwise upper bounds of the heat kernel in terms of global scale-invariant inequalities that correspond respectively to the Nash inequality and to a Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality when the volume growth is polynomial. This yields a new proof and a generalisation of the well-known equivalence between classical heat kernel upper bounds and relative Faber-Krahn inequalities or localized Sobolev or Nash inequalities. We are able to treat more general pointwise estimates, where the heat kernel rate of decay is not necessarily governed by the volume growth. A crucial role is played by the finite propagation speed property for the associated wave equation, and our main result holds for an abstract semigroup of operators satisfying the Davies-Gaffney estimates.

Heat kernel generated frames in the setting of Dirichlet spaces

Wavelet bases and frames consisting of band limited functions of nearly exponential localization on Rd are a powerful tool in harmonic analysis by making various spaces of functions and distributions more accessible for study and utilization, and providing sparse representation of natural function spaces (e.g. Besov spaces) on Rd. Such frames are also available on the sphere and in more general homogeneous spaces, on the interval and ball. The purpose of this article is to develop band limited well-localized frames in the general setting of Dirichlet spaces with doubling measure and a local scale-invariant Poincaré inequality which lead to heat kernels with small time Gaussian bounds and Hölder continuity. As an application of this construction, band limited frames are developed in the context of Lie groups or homogeneous spaces with polynomial volume growth, complete Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below and satisfying the volume doubling property, and other settings. The new frames are used for decomposition of Besov spaces in this general setting.

Riesz meets Sobolev

We show that the $L^p$ boundedness, $p>2$, of the Riesz transform on a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold with upper and lower Gaussian heat kernel estimates is equivalent to a certain form of Sobolev inequality. We also characterize in such terms the heat kernel gradient upper estimate on manifolds with polynomial growth.

Riesz transform and $L^p$ cohomology for manifolds with Euclidean ends

Let $M$ be a smooth Riemannian manifold which is the union of a compact part and a finite number of Euclidean ends, $\RR^n \setminus B(0,R)$ for some $R > 0$, each of which carries the standard metric. Our main result is that the Riesz transform on $M$ is bounded from $L^p(M) \to L^p(M; T^*M)$ for $1 < p < n$ and unbounded for $p \geq n$ if there is more than one end. It follows from known results that in such a case the Riesz transform on $M$ is bounded for $1 < p \leq 2$ and unbounded for $p > n$; the result is new for $2 < p \leq n$. We also give some heat kernel estimates on such manifolds. We then consider the implications of boundedness of the Riesz transform in $L^p$ for some $p > 2$ for a more general class of manifolds. Assume that $M$ is a $n$-dimensional complete manifold satisfying the Nash inequality and with an $O(r^n)$ upper bound on the volume growth of geodesic balls. We show that boundedness of the Riesz transform on $L^p$ for some $p > 2$ implies a Hodge-de Rham interpretation of the $L^p$ cohomology in degree 1, and that the map from $L^2$ to $L^p$ cohomology in this degree is injective.

Riesz transform on manifolds and heat kernel regularity

One considers the class of complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds whose heat kernel satisfies Gaussian estimates from above and below. One shows that the Riesz transform is $L^p$ bounded on such a manifold, for $p$ ranging in an open interval above 2, if and only if the gradient of the heat kernel satisfies a certain $L^p$ estimate in the same interval of $p$'s.

Von Neumann spectra near the spectral gap

In this paper we study some new von Neumann spectral invariants associated to the Laplacian acting on L^2 differential forms on the universal cover of a closed manifold. These invariants coincide with the Novikov-Shubin invariants whenever there is no spectral gap in the spectrum of the Laplacian, and are homotopy invariants in this case. In the presence of a spectral gap, they differ in character and value from the Novikov-Shubin invariants. Under a positivity assumption on these invariants, we prove that certain L^2 theta and L^2 zeta functions defined by metric dependent combinatorial Laplacians acting on $L^2$ cochains associated with a triangulation of the manifold, converge uniformly to their analytic counterparts, as the mesh of the triangulation goes to zero.
