Quantum Phase Transitions in quasi-one dimensional systems

I review in this chapter several classes of quantum phase transitions that occur in quasi-one dimensional systems. I start by examining the simple case of coupled spin chains and ladders, then move to the case of bosons, and finally deal with the more complicated and still largely open case of fermions.

Dissipative phase-fluctuations in superconducting wires capacitively coupled to diffusive metals

We study the screening of the Coulomb interaction in a quasi one-dimensional superconductor given by the presence of either a one- or a two-dimensional non-interacting electron gas. To that end, we derive an effective low-energy phase-only action, which amounts to treating the Coulomb and superconducting correlations in the random-phase approximation. We concentrate on the study of dissipation effects in the superconductor, induced by the effect of Coulomb coupling to the diffusive density-modes in the metal, and study its consequences on the static and dynamic conductivity. Our results point towards the importance of the dimensionality of the screening metal in the behavior of the superconducting plasma mode of the wire at low energies. In absence of topological defects, and when the screening is given by a one-dimensional electron gas, the superconducting plasma mode is completely damped in the limit $q\to 0$, and consequently superconductivity is lost in the wire. In contrast, we recover a Drude-response in the conductivity when the screening is provided by a two-dimensional electron gas.

Quantum critical states and phase transitions in the presence of non equilibrium noise

Quantum critical points are characterized by scale invariant correlations and correspondingly long ranged entanglement. As such, they present fascinating examples of quantum states of matter, the study of which has been an important theme in modern physics. Nevertheless very little is known about the fate of quantum criticality under non equilibrium conditions. In this paper we investigate the effect of external noise sources on quantum critical points. It is natural to expect that noise will have a similar effect to finite temperature, destroying the subtle correlations underlying the quantum critical behavior. Surprisingly we find that in many interesting situations the ubiquitous 1/f noise preserves the critical correlations. The emergent states show intriguing interplay of intrinsic quantum critical and external noise driven fluctuations. We demonstrate this general phenomenon with specific examples in solid state and ultracold atomic systems. Moreover our approach shows that genuine quantum phase transitions can exist even under non equilibrium conditions.

Dissipation-induced phase transitions in superconducting wires

We report on the reinforcement of superconductivity in a system consisting of a narrow superconducting wire weakly coupled to a diffusive metallic film. We analyze the effective phase-only action of the system by a perturbative renormalization-group and a self-consistent variational approach to obtain the critical points and phases at T=0. We predict a quantum phase transition towards a superconducting phase with long-range order as a function of the wire stiffness and coupling to the metal. We discuss implications for the DC resistivity of the wire.

Depinning of domain walls with an internal degree of freedom

Taking into account the coupling between the position of the wall and an internal degree of freedom, namely its phase $ϕ$, we examine, in the rigid wall approximation, the dynamics of a magnetic domain wall subject to a weak pinning potential. We determine the corresponding force-velocity characteristics, which display several unusual features when compared to standard depinning laws. At zero temperature, there exists a bistable regime for low forces, with a logarithmic behavior close to the transition. For weak pinning, there occurs a succession of bistable transitions corresponding to different topological modes of the phase evolution. At finite temperature, the force-velocity characteristics become non-monotonous. We compare our results to recent experiments on permalloy nanowires.

Creep dynamics of elastic manifolds via exact transition pathways

We study the steady state of driven elastic strings in disordered media below the depinning threshold. In the low-temperature limit, for a fixed sample, the steady state is dominated by a single configuration, which we determine exactly from the transition pathways between metastable states. We obtain the dynamical phase diagram in this limit. At variance with a thermodynamic phase transition, the depinning transition is not associated with a divergent length scale of the steady state below threshold, but only of the transient dynamics. We discuss the distribution of barrier heights, and check the validity of the dynamic phase diagram at small but finite temperatures using Langevin simulations. The phase diagram continues to hold for broken statistical tilt symmetry. We point out the relevance of our results for experiments of creep motion in elastic interfaces.

Rise and fall of hidden string order of lattice bosons

We investigate the ground state properties of a newly discovered phase of one dimensional lattice bosons with extended interactions (see E. G. Dalla Torre et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{97}, 260401 (2006)). The new phase, termed the Haldane Insulator (HI) in analogy with the gapped phase of spin-1 chains, is characterized by a non local order parameter, which can only be written as an infinite string in terms of the bosonic densities. We show that the string order can nevertheless be probed with physical fields that couple locally, via the effect those fields have on the quantum phase transitions separating the exotic phase from the conventional Mott and density wave phases. Using a field theoretical analysis we show that a perturbation which breaks lattice inversion symmetry gaps the critical point separating the Mott and Haldane phases and eliminates the sharp distinction between them. This is remarkable given that neither of these phases involves broken inversion symmetry. We also investigate the evolution of the phase diagram with the tunable coupling between parallel chains in an optical lattice setup. We find that inter-chain tunneling destroys the direct phase transition between the Mott and Haldane insulators by establishing an intermediate superfluid phase. On the other hand coupling the chains only by weak repulsive interactions does not modify the structure of the phase diagram. The theoretical predictions are confirmed with numerical calculations using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG).

Hall effect on the triangular lattice

We investigate the high frequency Hall effect on a two-dimensional triangular lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping and a local Hubbard interaction. The complete temperature and doping dependencies of the high-frequency Hall coefficient $R_H$ are evaluated analytically and numerically for small, intermediate, and strong interactions using various approximation schemes. We find that $R_H$ follows the semiclassical $1/qn^*$ law near T=0, but exhibits a striking $T$-linear behavior with an interaction- and doping-dependent slope at high temperature. We compare our results with previous theories as well as Hall measurements performed in the cobaltates.

Orbital currents in extended Hubbard models of high-T$_c$ cuprates

Motivated by the recent report of broken time-reversal symmetry and zero momentum magnetic scattering in underdoped cuprates, we investigate under which circumstances orbital currents circulating inside a unit cell might be stabilized in extended Hubbard models that explicitly include oxygen orbitals. Using Gutzwiller projected variational wave functions that treat on an equal footing all instabilities, we show that orbital currents indeed develop on finite clusters, and that they are stabilized in the thermodynamic limit if additional interactions, e.g. strong hybridization with apical oxygens, are included in the model.

Excitations in two-component Bose-gases

In this paper, we study a strongly correlated quantum system that has become amenable to experiment by the advent of ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices, a chain of two different bosonic constituents. Excitations in this system are first considered within the framework of bosonization and Luttinger liquid theory which are applicable if the Luttinger liquid parameters are determined numerically. The occurrence of a bosonic counterpart of fermionic spin-charge separation is signalled by a characteristic two-peak structure in the spectral functions found by dynamical DMRG in good agreement with analytical predictions. Experimentally, single-particle excitations as probed by spectral functions are currently not accessible in cold atoms. We therefore consider the modifications needed for current experiments, namely the investigation of the real-time evolution of density perturbations instead of single particle excitations, a slight inequivalence between the two intraspecies interactions in actual experiments, and the presence of a confining trap potential. Using time-dependent DMRG we show that only quantitative modifications occur. With an eye to the simulation of strongly correlated quantum systems far from equilibrium we detect a strong dependence of the time-evolution of entanglement entropy on the initial perturbation, signalling limitations to current reasonings on entanglement growth in many-body systems.

Scanning tunnelling microscopy for ultracold atoms

We propose a novel experimental probe for cold atomic gases analogous to the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) in condensed matter. This probe uses the coherent coupling of a single particle to the system. Depending on the measurement sequence, our probe allows to either obtain the \emph{local} density, with a resolution on the nanometer scale, or the single particle correlation function in real time. We discuss applications of this scheme to the various possible phases for a two dimensional Hubbard system of fermions in an optical lattice.

Short time relaxation of a driven elastic string in a random medium

We study numerically the relaxation of a driven elastic string in a two dimensional pinning landscape. The relaxation of the string, initially flat, is governed by a growing length $L(t)$ separating the short steady-state equilibrated lengthscales, from the large lengthscales that keep memory of the initial condition. We find a macroscopic short time regime where relaxation is universal, both above and below the depinning threshold, different from the one expected for standard critical phenomena. Below the threshold, the zero temperature relaxation towards the first pinned configuration provides a novel, experimentally convenient way to access all the critical exponents of the depinning transition independently.

Dynamics below the depinning threshold

We study the steady-state low-temperature dynamics of an elastic line in a disordered medium below the depinning threshold. Analogously to the equilibrium dynamics, in the limit T->0, the steady state is dominated by a single configuration which is occupied with probability one. We develop an exact algorithm to target this dominant configuration and to analyze its geometrical properties as a function of the driving force. The roughness exponent of the line at large scales is identical to the one at depinning. No length scale diverges in the steady state regime as the depinning threshold is approached from below. We do find, a divergent length, but it is associated only with the transient relaxation between metastable states.

Non-equilibrium relaxation of an elastic string in random media

We study the relaxation of an elastic string in a two dimensional pinning landscape using Langevin dynamics simulations. The relaxation of a line, initially flat, is characterized by a growing length, $L(t)$, separating the equilibrated short length scales from the flat long distance geometry that keep memory of the initial condition. We find that, in the long time limit, $L(t)$ has a non--algebraic growth, consistent with thermally activated jumps over barriers with power law scaling, $U(L) \sim L^θ$.

Coulombian disorder in Charge Density Waves

When unscreened charged impurities are introduced in charge density wave system the long wavelength component of the disorder is long ranged and dominates static correlation functions. We calculate the x-ray intensity and find that it is identical to the one produced by thermal fluctuations in a disorder-free smectic-A. We suggest that this effect could be observed in the blue bronze material K$_{0.3}$MoO$_3$ doped with charged impurities such as Vanadium.

Hall effect in quasi one-dimensional organic conductors

We study the Hall effect in a system of weakly coupled Luttinger Liquid chains, using a Memory function approach to compute the Hall constant in the presence of umklapp scattering along the chains. In this approximation, the Hall constant decomposes into two terms: a high-frequency term and a Memory function term. For the case of zero umklapp scattering, where the Memory function vanishes, the Hall constant is simply the band value, in agreement with former results in a similar model with no dissipation along the chains. With umklapp scattering along the chains, we find a power-law temperature dependance of the Hall constant. We discuss the applications to quasi 1D organic conductors at high temperatures.

Magnetism and superconductivity of strongly correlated electrons on the triangular lattice

We investigate the phase diagram of the \tj Model on a triangular lattice using a Variational Monte-Carlo approach. We use an extended set of Gutzwiller projected fermionic trial wave-functions allowing for simultaneous magnetic and superconducting order parameters. We obtain energies at zero doping for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in very good agreement with the best estimates. Upon electron doping (with a hopping integral $t<0$) this phase is surprisingly stable variationally up to $n\approx 1.4$, while the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}+i d_{xy}$ order parameter is rather weak and disappears at $n\approx 1.1$. For hole doping however the coplanar magnetic state is almost immediately destroyed and $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}+i d_{xy}$ superconductivity survives down to $n\approx 0.8$. For lower $n$, between 0.2 and 0.8, we find saturated ferromagnetism. Moreover, there is evidence for a narrow spin density wave phase around $n\approx 0.8$. Commensurate flux phases were also considered, but these turned out {\em not} to be competitive at finite doping.
