Many-body study of a quantum point contact in the fractional quantum Hall regime at v=5/2

We study a quantum point contact in the fractional quantum Hall regime at Landau level filling factors 1/3 and 5/2. By using exact diagonalizations in the cylinder geometry we identify the edge modes in the presence of a parabolic confining potential. By changing the sign of the potential we can access both the tunneling through the bulk of the fluid and the tunneling between spatially separated droplets. This geometry is realized in the quantum point contact geometry for two-dimensional electron gases. In the case of the model Moore-Read Pfaffian state at filling factor 5/2 we identify the conformal towers of many-body eigenstates including the non-Abelian sector. By a Monte-Carlo technique we compute the various scaling exponents that characterize the edge modes. In the case of hard-core interactions whose ground states are exact model wavefunction we find equality of neutral and charged velocities for the Pfaffian state both bosonic and fermionic.

Low-dimensional physics of ultracold gases with bound states and the sine-Gordon model

One-dimensional systems of interacting atoms are an ideal laboratory to study the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition. In the renormalization group picture there is essentially a two-parameter phase diagram to explore. We first present how detailed experiments have shown direct evidence for the theoretical treatment of this transition. Then generalization to the case of two-component systems with bound state formation is discussed. Trimer formation in the asymmetric attractive Hubbard model involve in a crucial way this kind of physics.

Edge properties of principal fractional quantum Hall states in the cylinder geometry

We study fractional quantum Hall states in the cylinder geometry with open boundaries. We focus on principal fermionic 1/3 and bosonic 1/2 fractions in the case of hard-core interactions. The gap behavior as a function of the cylinder radius is analyzed. By adding enough orbitals to allow for edge modes we show that it is possible to measure the Luttinger parameter of the non-chiral liquid formed by the combination of the two counterpropagating edges when we add a small confining potential. While we measure a Luttinger exponent consistent with the chiral Luttinger theory prediction for the full hard-core interaction, the exponent remains non-trivial in the Tao-Thouless limit as well as for simple truncated states that can be constructed on the cylinder. If the radius of the cylinder is taken to infinity the problem becomes a Tonks-Girardeau one-dimensional interacting gas in Fermi and Bose cases. Finally we show that the the Tao-Thouless and truncated states have an edge electron propagator which decays spatially with a Fermi-liquid exponent even if the energy spectrum can still be described by a non-trivial Luttinger parameter.

Fermionic trimers in spin-dependent optical lattices

We investigate the formation of three-body bound states (trimers) in two-component Fermi gases confined in one dimensional optical lattice with spin-dependent tunneling rates. The binding energy and the effective mass of the trimer are obtained from the solution of the Mattis integral equation generalized to the case of unequal Bloch masses. We show that this equation admits multiple solutions corresponding to excited bound states, which are only stable for large mass asymmetry.

Multimer formation in 1D two-component gases and trimer phase in the asymmetric attractive Hubbard model

We consider two-component one-dimensional quantum gases at special imbalanced commensurabilities which lead to the formation of multimer (multi-particle bound-states) as the dominant order parameter. Luttinger liquid theory supports a mode-locking mechanism in which mass (or velocity) asymmetry is identified as the key ingredient to stabilize such states. While the scenario is valid both in the continuum and on a lattice, the effects of umklapp terms relevant for densities commensurate with the lattice spacing are also mentioned. These ideas are illustrated and confronted with the physics of the asymmetric (mass-imbalanced) fermionic Hubbard model with attractive interactions and densities such that a trimer phase can be stabilized. Phase diagrams are computed using density-matrix renormalization group techniques, showing the important role of the total density in achieving the novel phase. The effective physics of the trimer gas is as well studied. Lastly, the effect of a parabolic confinement and the emergence of a crystal phase of trimers are briefly addressed. This model has connections with the physics of imbalanced two-component fermionic gases and Bose-Fermi mixtures as the latter gives a good phenomenological description of the numerics in the strong-coupling regime.

Luttinger liquid of trimers in Fermi gases with unequal masses

We investigate one dimensional attractive Fermi gases in spin-dependent optical lattices. We show that three-body bound states - "trimers" - exist as soon as the two tunneling rates are different. We calculate the binding energy and the effective mass of a single trimer. We then show numerically that for finite and commensurate densities $n_\uparrow=n_\downarrow/2$ an energy gap appears, implying that the gas is a one-component Luttinger liquid of trimers with suppressed superfluid ordering. The boundaries of this novel phase are given. We discuss experimental situations to test our predictions.

Multi-particle composites in density-imbalanced quantum fluids

We consider two-component one-dimensional quantum gases with density imbalance. While generically such fluids are two-component Luttinger liquids, we show that if the ratio of the densities is a rational number, p/q, and mass asymmetry between components is sufficiently strong, one of the two eigenmodes acquires a gap. The gapped phase corresponds to (algebraic) ordering of (p+q)-particle composites. In particular, for attractive mixtures, this implies that the superconducting correlations are destroyed. We illustrate our predictions by numerical simulations of the fermionic Hubbard model with hopping asymmetry.

Fermions out of Dipolar Bosons in the lowest Landau level

In the limit of very fast rotation atomic Bose-Einstein condensates may reside entirely in the lowest two-dimensional Landau level (LLL). For small enough filling factor of the LLL, one may have formation of fractional quantum Hall states. We investigate the case of bosons with dipolar interactions as may be realized with Chromium-52 atoms. We show that at filling factor equal to unity the ground state is a Moore-Read (a.k.a Pfaffian) paired state as is the case of bosons with purely s-wave scattering interactions. This Pfaffian state is destabilized when the interaction in the s-wave channel is small enough and the ground state is a stripe phase with unidimensional density modulation. For filling factor 1/3, we show that there is formation of a Fermi sea of ``composite fermions''. These composites are made of one boson bound with three vortices. This phase has a wide range of stability and the effective mass of the fermions depends essentially only of the scattering amplitude in momentum channels larger or equal to 2. The formation of such a Fermi sea opens up a new possible route to detection of the quantum Hall correlations.

Non-Abelian states with negative flux: a new series of quantum Hall states

By applying the idea of parafermionic clustering to composite bosons with positive as well as negative flux, a new series of trial wavefunctions to describe fractional quantum Hall states is proposed. These non-Abelian states compete at filling factors k/(3k +/- 2) with other ground states like stripes or composite fermion states. These two series contain all the states recently discovered by Pan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 016801 (2003)] including the even denominator cases. Exact diagonalization studies on the sphere and torus point to their possible relevance for filling factors 3/7, 3/11, and 3/8.

Composite-fermionization of bosons in rapidly rotating atomic traps

The non-perturbative effect of interaction can sometimes make interacting bosons behave as though they were free fermions. The system of neutral bosons in a rapidly rotating atomic trap is equivalent to charged bosons coupled to a magnetic field, which has opened up the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effect for bosons interacting with a short range interaction. Motivated by the composite fermion theory of the fractional Hall effect of electrons, we test the idea that the interacting bosons map into non-interacting spinless fermions carrying one vortex each, by comparing wave functions incorporating this physics with exact wave functions available for systems containing up to 12 bosons. We study here the analogy between interacting bosons at filling factors $ν=n/(n+1)$ with non-interacting fermions at $ν^*=n$ for the ground state as well as the low-energy excited states and find that it provides a good account of the behavior for small $n$, but interactions between fermions become increasingly important with $n$. At $ν=1$, which is obtained in the limit $n\rightarrow \infty$, the fermionization appears to overcompensate for the repulsive interaction between bosons, producing an {\em attractive} interactions between fermions, as evidenced by a pairing of fermions here.

Quantum Hall fractions in ultracold fermionic vapors

We study the quantum Hall states that appear in the dilute limit of rotating ultracold fermionic gases when a single hyperfine species is present. We show that the p-wave scattering translates into a pure hard-core interaction in the lowest Landau level. The Laughlin wavefunction is then the exact ground state at filling fraction nu=1/3. We give estimates of some of the gaps of the incompressible liquids for nu = p/(2p+-1). We estimate the mass of the composite fermions at nu =1/2. The width of the quantum Hall plateaus is discussed by considering the equation of state of the system.

Quantum Hall fractions for spinless Bosons

We study the Quantum Hall phases that appear in the fast rotation limit for Bose-Einstein condensates of spinless bosonic atoms. We use exact diagonalization in a spherical geometry to obtain low-lying states of a small number of bosons as a function of the angular momentum. This allows to understand or guess the physics at a given filling fraction nu, ratio of the number of bosons to the number of vortices. This is also the filling factor of the lowest Landau level. In addition to the well-known Bose Laughlin state at nu =1/2 we give evidence for the Jain principal sequence of incompressible states at nu =p/(p+- 1) for a few values of p. There is a collective mode in these states whose phenomenology is in agreement with standard arguments coming e.g. from the composite fermion picture. At filling factor one, the potential Fermi sea of composite fermions is replaced by a paired state, the Moore-Read state. This is most clearly seen from the half-flux nature of elementary excitations. We find that the hierarchy picture does not extend up to the point of transition towards a vortex lattice. While we cannot conclude, we investigate the clustered Read-Rezayi states and show evidence for incompressible states at the expected ratio of flux vs number of Bose particles.

Generalized Helimagnets Between Two and Four Dimensions

We study the phase transitions of N-components generalized helimagnets that obey the symmetry breaking pattern O(N) x O(N-1) -> O(N-1)_diag . In the neighborhood of two dimensions, a D=2+epsilon renormalization group study reveals a rich fixed point structure as well as a nematic-like phase with partial spin ordering. In the physical case O(3) x O(2) -> O(2)_diag , relevant to real magnets with noncollinear ordering, we show that this implies an XY-like transition between the ordered phase and the nematic-like phase. A non-Abelian mean-field calculation qualitatively valid above four dimensions is shown to lead to the same picture but then the principal chiral fixed point, which had been proposed earlier as the relevant fixed point for D=3 helimagnets, plays no role due to the appearance of a first-order line.
