Transport through a band insulator with Rashba spin-orbit coupling: metal-insulator transition and spin-filtering effects

We calculate the current-voltage characteristic of a one-dimensional band insulator with magnetic field and Rashba spin-orbit coupling which is connected to nonmagnetic leads. Without spin-orbit coupling we find a complete spin-filtering effect, meaning that the electric transport occurs in one spin channel only. For a large magnetic field which closes the band gap, we show that spin-orbit coupling leads to a transition from metallic to insulating behavior. The oscillations of the different spin-components of the current with the length of the transport channel are studied as well.

Josephson Effect through an isotropic magnetic molecule

We investigate the Josephson effect through a molecular quantum dot magnet connected to superconducting leads. The molecule contains a magnetic atom, whose spin is assumed to be isotropic. It is coupled to the electron spin on the dot via exchange coupling. Using the numerical renormalization group method we calculate the Andreev levels and the supercurrent and examine intertwined effect of the exchange coupling, Kondo correlation, and superconductivity on the current. Exchange coupling typically suppresses the Kondo correlation so that the system undergoes a phase transition from 0 to $π$ state as the modulus of exchange coupling increases. Antiferromagnetic coupling is found to drive exotic transitions: the reentrance to the $π$ state for a small superconducting gap and the restoration of 0 state for large antiferromagnetic exchange coupling. We suggest that the asymmetric dependence of supercurrent on the exchange coupling could be used as to detect its sign in experiments.

Charge pumping and noise in a one-dimensional wire with weak electron-electron interactions

We consider the adiabatic pumping of charge through a mesoscopic one dimensional wire in the presence of electron-electron interactions. A two-delta potential model is used to describe the wire, which allows to obtain exactly the scattering matrix coefficients, which are renormalized by the interactions. Two periodic drives, shifted one from another, are applied at two locations of the wire in order to drive a current through it in the absence of bias. Analytical expressions are obtained for the pumped charge, current noise, and Fano factor in different regimes. This allows to explore pumping for the whole parameter range of pumping strengths. We show that, working close to a resonance is necessary to have a comfortable window of pumping amplitudes where charge quantization is close to the optimum value: a single electron charge is transferred in one cycle. Interactions can improve the situation, the charge $Q$ is closer to one electron charge and noise is reduced, following a $Q (1-Q)$ behavior, reminiscent of the reduction of noise in quantum wires by $T (1-T)$, where $T$ is the energy transmission coefficient. For large pumping amplitudes, this charge vanishes, noise also decreases but slower than the charge.

Colossal spin fluctuations in a molecular quantum dot magnet with ferromagnetic electrodes

We study electronic transport through a magnetic molecule with an intrinsic spin $S$ coupled to two magnetic electrodes, in the incoherent regime. The molecule is modeled as a single resonant level with large Coulomb repulsion (no double occupancy). The molecular spin is isotropic and it interacts with the electronic spin through an exchange interaction. Using an alternative method to the usual master equation approach, we are able to obtain analytical formulas for various physical quantities of interest, such as the mean current and the current fluctuations, but also the mean value of $J_z$ -the $z$ component of the total spin on the molecule- and its fluctuations. This allows us to understand how the electronic current between the magnetized electrodes can control the polarization of the molecular spin. We observe in particular that the fluctuations of $J_z$ reach unexpectedly high values.

Electron polarizability of crystalline solids in quantizing magnetic fields and topological gap numbers

A theory of the static electron polarizability of crystals whose energy spectrum is modified by quantizing magnetic fields is presented. It is argued that The polarizability is strongly affected by non-dissipative Hall currents induced by the presence of crossed electric and magnetic fields: these can even change its sign. Results are illustrated in detail for a two dimensional square lattice. The polarizability and the Hall conductivity are respectively linked to the two topological quantum numbers entering the so--called Diophantine equation. These numbers could in principle be detected in actual experiments.

Controllable pi junction in a Josephson quantum-dot device with molecular spin

We consider a model for a single molecule with a large frozen spin sandwiched in between two BCS superconductors at equilibrium, and show that this system has a $π$ junction behavior at low temperature. The $π$ shift can be reversed by varying the other parameters of the system, e.g., temperature or the position of the quantum dot level, implying a controllable $π$ junction with novel application as a Josephson current switch. We show that the mechanism leading to the $π$ shift can be explained simply in terms of the contributions of the Andreev bound states and of the continuum of states above the superconducting gap. The free energy for certain configuration of parameters shows a bistable nature, which is a necessary pre-condition for achievement of a qubit.

Transport through a molecular quantum dot in the polaron crossover regime

We consider resonant transport through a molecular quantum dot coupled to a local vibration mode. Applying the non-equilibrium Green function technique in the polaron representation, we develop a non-perturbative scheme to calculate the electron spectral function of the molecule in the regime of intermediate electron-phonon coupling. With increasing tunneling coupling to the leads, correlations between polaron clouds become more important at relatively high temperature leading to a strong sharpening of the peak structure in the spectral function. The detection of such features in the current-voltage characteristics is briefly discussed.

Finite size effects, super-and sub-poissonian noise in a nanotube connected to leads

The injection of electrons in the bulk of carbon nanotube which is connected to ideal Fermi liquid leads is considered. While the presence of the leads gives a cancellation of the noise cross-correlations, the auto-correlation noise has a Fano factor which deviates strongly from the Schottky behavior at voltages where finite size effects are expected. Indeed, as the voltage is increased from zero, the noise is first super-poissonian, then sub-poissonian, and eventually it reaches the Schottky limit. These finite size effects are also tested using a diagnosis of photo-assisted transport, where a small AC modulation is superposed to the DC bias voltage between the injection tip and the nanotube. When finite size effects are at play, we obtain a stepwise behavior for the noise derivative, as expected for normal metal systems, whereas in the absence of finite size effects, due to the presence of Coulomb interactions, a smoothed staircase is observed. The present work shows that it is possible to explore finite size effects in nanotube transport via a zero frequency noise measurement.

Detection of finite frequency current moments with a dissipative resonant circuit

We consider the measurement of higher current moments with a dissipative resonant circuit, which is coupled inductively to a mesoscopic device in the coherent regime. Information about the higher current moments is coded in the histograms of the charge on the capacitor plates of the resonant circuit. Dissipation is included via the Caldeira-Leggett model, and it is essential to include it in order for the charge fluctuations (or the measured noise) to remain finite. We identify which combination of current correlators enter the measurement of the third moment. The latter remains stable for zero damping. Results are illustrated briefly for a quantum point contact.

Full counting statistics for transport through a molecular quantum dot magnet

Full counting statistics (FCS) for the transport through a molecular quantum dot magnet is studied theoretically in the incoherent tunneling regime. We consider a model describing a single-level quantum dot, magnetically coupled to an additional local spin, the latter representing the total molecular spin s. We also assume that the system is in the strong Coulomb blockade regime, i.e., double occupancy on the dot is forbidden. The master equation approach to FCS introduced in Ref. [12] is applied to derive a generating function yielding the FCS of charge and current. In the master equation approach, Clebsch-Gordan coefficients appear in the transition probabilities, whereas the derivation of generating function reduces to solving the eigenvalue problem of a modified master equation with counting fields. To be more specific, one needs only the eigenstate which collapses smoothly to the zero-eigenvalue stationary state in the limit of vanishing counting fields. We discovered that in our problem with arbitrary spin s, some quartic relations among Clebsch-Gordan coefficients allow us to identify the desired eigenspace without solving the whole problem. Thus we find analytically the FCS generating function in the following two cases: i) both spin sectors lying in the bias window, ii) only one of such spin sectors lying in the bias window. Based on the obtained analytic expressions, we also developed a numerical analysis in order to perform a similar contour-plot of the joint charge-current distribution function, which have recently been introduced in Ref. [13], here in the case of molecular quantum dot magnet problem.

Phonon Squeezing in a Superconducting Molecular Transistor

Josephson transport through a single molecule or carbon nanotube is considered in the presence of a local vibrational mode coupled to the electronic charge. The ground-state solution is obtained exactly in the limit of a large superconducting gap, and is extended to the general case by variational analysis. Coherent charge fluctuations are entangled with non-classical phonon states. The Josephson current induces squeezing of the phonon mode, which is controlled by the superconducting phase difference and by the junction asymmetry. Optical probes of non-classical phonon states are briefly discussed.

Quantum dot dephasing by fractional quantum Hall edge states

We consider the dephasing rate of an electron level in a quantum dot, placed next to a fluctuating edge current in the fractional quantum Hall effect. Using perturbation theory, we show that this rate has an anomalous dependence on the bias voltage applied to the neighboring quantum point contact, which originates from the Luttinger liquid physics which describes the Hall fluid. General expressions are obtained using a screened Coulomb interaction. The dephasing rate is strictly proportional to the zero frequency backscattering current noise, which allows to describe exactly the weak to strong backscattering crossover using the Bethe-Ansatz solution.

Energy entanglement in normal metal-superconducting forks

The possibility for detecting energy entanglement in normal metal - superconductor junctions is examined. For the first time we proved that two electrons in a NS structure originating from the same Cooper pair are entangled in the energy subspace. This work follows previous works where spin entanglement was studied in similar circuits. The device consists of a superconducting beam splitter connected to two electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometers. In each arms of the interferometers, energies are filtered with coherent quantum dots. In contrast to previous studies of zero-frequency cross-correlations of electrical currents for this system, attention is drawn to finite-time measurements. This allows to observe two-particle interference for particles with different energies above and below Fermi level. Entanglement is first characterized via the concurrence for the two-particle spatial density matrix. Next, we formulate the Bell inequality, which is written in terms of finite-time noise correlators, and thereby we find a specific set of parameters for which entanglement can be detected.

Measurement of finite frequency noise cross-correlations with a resonant circuit

The measurement of finite frequency noise cross-correlations represents an experimental challenge in mesoscopic physics. Here we propose a generalisation of the resonant LC circuit setup of Lesovik and Loosen which allow to probe directly such cross-correlations by measuring the charge fluctuations on the plates of a capacitor. The measuring circuit collects noise contributions at the resonant frequency of the LC circuit. Auto-correlation noise can be canceled out by switching the wires and making two distinct measurements. The measured cross-correlations then depend of four non-symmetrized correlators. This detection method is applied to a normal metal three terminal device. We subsequently discuss to what extent the measurement circuit can detect electron-antibunching and what singularities appear in the spectral density of noise cross-correlations.

Phonon-mediated negative differential conductance in molecular quantum dots

Transport through a single molecular conductor is considered, showing negative differential conductance behavior associated with phonon-mediated electron tunneling processes. This theoretical work is motivated by a recent experiment by Leroy et al. using a carbon nanotube contacted by an STM tip [Nature {\bf 432}, 371 (2004)], where negative differential conductance of the breathing mode phonon side peaks could be observed. A peculiarity of this system is that the tunneling couplings which inject electrons and those which collect them on the substrate are highly asymmetrical. A quantum dot model is used, coupling a single electronic level to a local phonon, forming polaron levels. A "half-shuttle" mechanism is also introduced. A quantum kinetic formulation allows to derive rate equations. Assuming asymmetric tunneling rates, and in the absence of the half-shuttle coupling, negative differential conductance is obtained for a wide range of parameters. A detailed explanation of this phenomenon is provided, showing that NDC is maximal for intermediate electron-phonon coupling. In addition, in absence of a gate, the "floating" level results in two distinct lengths for the current plateaus, related to the capacitive couplings at the two junctions. It is shown that the "half-shuttle" mechanism tends to reinforce the negative differential regions, but it cannot trigger this behavior on its own.

An electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the Fractional Quantum Hall effect

We compute the interference pattern of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer operating in the fractional quantum Hall effect. Our theoretical proposal is inspired by a remarkable experiment on edge states in the Integer Quantum Hall effect (IQHE). The Luttinger liquid model is solved via two independent methods: refermionization at nu=1/2 and the Bethe Ansatz solution available for Laughlin fractions. The current differs strongly from that of single electrons in the strong backscattering regime. The Fano factor is periodic in the flux, and it exhibits a sharp transition from sub-Poissonian (charge e/2) to Poissonian (charge e) in the neighborhood of destructive interferences.

Time-controlled charge injection in a quantum Hall fluid

We consider the injection of a controlled charge from a normal metal into an edge state of the fractional quantum Hall effect, with a time-dependent voltage $V(t)$. Using perturbative calculations in the tunneling limit, and a chiral Luttinger liquid model for the edge state, we show that the electronic correlations prevent the charge fluctuations to be divergent for a generic voltage pulse $V(t)$. This is in strong contrast with the case of charge injection in a normal metal, where this divergence is present. We show that explicit formul{ae} for the mean injected charge and its fluctuations can be obtained using an adiabatic approximation, and that non perturbative results can be obtained for injection in an edge state of the FQHE with filling factor $ nu=1/3$. Generalization to other correlated systems which can be described with the Luttinger liquid model, like metallic Carbon nanotube, is given.

Photo-assisted shot noise in the fractional quantum Hall regime

The effect of an ac perturbation on the shot noise of a fractional quantum Hall fluid is studied at finite temperature. For a normal metal, it is known that the zero-frequency noise derivative exhibits steps as a function of bias voltage. In contrast, at Laughlin fractions, the backscattering noise exhibits evenly spaced singularities, which are reminiscent of tunneling density-of-states singularities for quasiparticles. The spacing is determined by the quasiparticle charge $νe$ and the ratio of the dc bias with respect to the drive frequency. Photo-assisted transport can thus be considered as a probe for effective charges of the quantum Hall effect.
