From Toda to KdV

For periodic Toda chains with a large number $N$ of particles we consider states which are $N^{-2}$-close to the equilibrium and constructed by discretizing arbitrary given $C^2-$functions with mesh size $N^{-1}.$ Our aim is to describe the spectrum of the Jacobi matrices $L\_N$ appearing in the Lax pair formulation of the dynamics of these states as $N \to \infty$. To this end we construct two Hill operators $H\_\pm$ -- such operators come up in the Lax pair formulation of the Korteweg-de Vries equation -- and prove by methods of semiclassical analysis that the asymptotics as $N \rightarrow \infty $ of the eigenvalues at the edges of the spectrum of $L\_N$ are of the form $\pm (2-(2N)^{-2} λ^\pm \_n + \cdots )$ where $(λ^\pm \_n)\_{n \geq 0}$ are the eigenvalues of $H\_\pm $. In the bulk of the spectrum, the eigenvalues are $o(N^{-2})$-close to the ones of the equilibrium matrix. As an application we obtain asymptotics of a similar type of the discriminant, associated to $L\_N$.

On the Classical Limit of the Schrödinger Equation

This paper provides an elementary proof of the classical limit of the Schrödinger equation with WKB type initial data and over arbitrary long finite time intervals. We use only the stationary phase method and the Laptev-Sigal simple and elegant construction of a parametrix for Schrödinger type equations [A. Laptev, I. Sigal, Review of Math. Phys. 12 (2000), 749-766]. We also explain in detail how the phase shifts across caustics obtained when using the Laptev-Sigal parametrix are related to the Maslov index.

On the dynamics of WKB wave functions whose phase are weak KAM solutions of H-J equation

In the framework of toroidal Pseudodifferential operators on the flat torus $\Bbb T^n := (\Bbb R / 2π\Bbb Z)^n$ we begin by proving the closure under composition for the class of Weyl operators $\mathrm{Op}^w_\hbar(b)$ with simbols $b \in S^m (\mathbb{T}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n)$. Subsequently, we consider $\mathrm{Op}^w_\hbar(H)$ when $H=\frac{1}{2} |η|^2 + V(x)$ where $V \in C^\infty (\Bbb T^n;\Bbb R)$ and we exhibit the toroidal version of the equation for the Wigner transform of the solution of the Schrödinger equation. Moreover, we prove the convergence (in a weak sense) of the Wigner transform of the solution of the Schrödinger equation to the solution of the Liouville equation on $\Bbb T^n \times \Bbb R^n$ written in the measure sense. These results are applied to the study of some WKB type wave functions in the Sobolev space $H^{1} (\mathbb{T}^n; \Bbb C)$ with phase functions in the class of Lipschitz continuous weak KAM solutions (of positive and negative type) of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation $\frac{1}{2} |P+ \nabla_x v_\pm (P,x)|^2 + V(x) = \bar{H}(P)$ for $P \in \ell \Bbb Z^n$ with $\ell >0$, and to the study of the backward and forward time propagation of the related Wigner measures supported on the graph of $P+ \nabla_x v_\pm$.

Dynamics of periodic Toda chains with a large number of particles

For periodic Toda chains with a large number $N$ of particles we consider states which are $N^{-2}-$close to the equilibrium and constructed by discretizing any given $C^2-$functions with mesh size $N^{-1}$. For such states we derive asymptotic expansions of the Toda frequencies $(ω^N_n)_{0 < n < N}$ and the actions $(I^N_n)_{0 < n < N},$ both listed in the standard way, in powers of $N^{-1}$ as $N \to \infty$. %listed in accordance with the ordering of the frequencies at the equilibrium, %$(2 \sin \frac{nπ} {N})_{0 < n < N}$. At the two edges $n \sim 1$ and $N -n \sim 1$, the expansions of the frequencies are computed up to order $N^{-3}$ with an error term of higher order. Specifically, the coefficients of the expansions of $ω^N_n$ and $ω^N_{N-n}$ at order $N^{-3}$ are given by a constant multiple of the n'th KdV frequencies $ω^-_n$ and $ω^+_n$ of two periodic potentials, $q_{-}$ respectively $q_+$, constructed in terms of the states considered. The frequencies $ω^N_n$ for $n$ away from the edges are shown to be asymptotically close to the frequencies of the equilibrium. For the actions $(I^N_n)_{0 < n < N},$ asymptotics of a similar nature are derived.

Hamiltonian Evolution of Monokinetic Measures with Rough Momentum Profile

Consider in the phase space of classical mechanics a Radon measure that is a probability density carried by the graph of a Lipschitz continuous (or even less regular) vector field. We study the structure of the push-forward of such a measure by a Hamiltonian flow. In particular, we provide an estimate on the number of folds in the support of the transported measure that is the image of the initial graph by the flow. We also study in detail the type of singularities in the projection of the transported measure in configuration space (averaging out the momentum variable). We study the conditions under which this projected measure can have atoms, and give an example in which the projected measure is singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure and diffuse. We discuss applications of our results to the classical limit of the Schrödinger equation. Finally we present various examples and counterexamples showing that our results are sharp.

Recovering the Hamiltonian from spectral data

We show that the contributions to the Gutzwiller formula with observable associated to the iterates of a given elliptic nondegenerate periodic trajectory $γ$ and to certain families of observables localized near $γ$ determine the quantum Hamiltonian in a formal neighborhood of the trajectory $γ$, that is the full Taylor expansion of its total symbol near $γ$. We also treat the "bottom of a well" case both for general and Schrödinger operators.

Semiclassical approximation and noncommutative geometry

We consider the long time semiclassical evolution for the linear Schrödinger equation. We show that, in the case of chaotic underlying classical dynamics and for times up to $\hbar^{-2+ε},\ ε>0$, the symbol of a propagated observable by the corresponding von Neumann-Heisenberg equation is, in a sense made precise below, precisely obtained by the push-forward of the symbol of the observable at time $t=0$. The corresponding definition of the symbol calls upon a kind of Toeplitz quantization framework, and the symbol itself is an element of the noncommutative algebra of the (strong) unstable foliation of the underlying dynamics.

Toeplitz operators in TQFT via skein theory

Topological quantum field theory associates to a punctured surface $Σ$, a level $r$ and colors $c$ in $\{1,...,r-1\}$ at the marked points a finite dimensional hermitian space $V_r(Σ,c)$. Curves $γ$ on $Σ$ act as Hermitian operator $T_r^γ$ on these spaces. In the case of the punctured torus and the 4 times punctured sphere, we prove that the matrix elements of $T_r^γ$ have an asymptotic expansion in powers of $\frac{1}{r}$ and we identify the two first terms using trace functions on representation spaces of the surface in $\su$. We conjecture a formula for the general case. Then we show that the curve operators are Toeplitz operators on the sphere in the sense that $T_r^γ=Π_r f^γ_rΠ_r$ where $Π_r$ is the Toeplitz projector and $f^γ_r$ is an explicit function on the sphere which is smooth away from the poles. Using this formula, we show that under some assumptions on the colors associated to the marked points, the sequence $T^γ_r$ is a Toeplitz operator in the usual sense with principal symbol equal to the trace function and with subleading term explicitly computed. We use this result and semi-classical analysis in order to compute the asymptotics of matrix elements of the representation of the mapping class group of $Σ$ on $V_r(Σ,c)$. We recover in this way the result of Taylor and Woodward on the asymptotics of the quantum 6j-symbols and treat the case of the punctured S-matrix. We conclude with some partial results when $Σ$ is a genus 2 surface without marked points.

On the selection of the classical limit for potentials with BV derivatives

We consider the classical limit of the quantum evolution, with some rough potential, of wave packets concentrated near singular trajectories of the underlying dynamics. We prove that under appropriate conditions, even in the case of BV vector fields, the correct classical limit can be selected.

On the dynamics of Bohmian measures

The present work is devoted to the study of dynamical features of Bohmian measures, recently introduced by the authors. We rigorously prove that for sufficiently smooth wave functions the corresponding Bohmian measure furnishes a distributional solution of a nonlinear Vlasov-type equation. Moreover, we study the associated defect measures appearing in the classical limit. In one space dimension, this yields a new connection between mono- kinetic Wigner and Bohmian measures. In addition, we shall study the dynamics of Bohmian measures associated to so-called semi-classical wave packets. For these type of wave functions, we prove local in-measure convergence of a rescaled sequence of Bohmian trajectories towards the classical Hamiltonian flow on phase space. Finally, we construct an example of wave functions whose limiting Bohmian measure is not mono-kinetic but nevertheless equals the associated Wigner measure.

Convergence of a quantum normal form and an exact quantization formula

We consider the Schrödinger operator defined by the quantization of the linear flow of diophantine frequencies over the l-dimensional torus, perturbed by a holomorphic potential which depends on the actions only through their particular linear combination defining the Hamiltonian of the linear flow. We prove that the corresponding quantum normal form converges uniformly with respect to the Planck constant. This result simultaneously yields an exact quantization formula for the quantum spectrum, as well as a convergence criterion for the Birkhoff normal form, valid for a class of perturbations holomorphic away from the origin.

Strong and weak semiclassical limits for some rough Hamiltonians

We present several results concerning the semiclassical limit of the time dependent Schrödinger equation with potentials whose regularity doesn't guarantee the uniqueness of the underlying classical flow. Different topologies for the limit are considered and the situation where two bicharateristics can be obtained out of the same initial point is emphasized.

Semiclassical and spectral analysis of oceanic waves

In this work we prove that the shallow water flow, subject to strong wind forcing and linearized around an adequate stationary profile, develops for large times closed trajectories due to the propagation of Rossby waves, while Poincaré waves are shown to disperse. The methods used in this paper involve semi-classical analysis and dynamical systems for the study of Rossby waves, while some refined spectral analysis is required for the study of Poincaré waves, due to the large time scale involved which is of diffractive type.

Semiclassical Propagation of Coherent States for the Hartree equation

In this paper we consider the nonlinear Hartree equation in presence of a given external potential, for an initial coherent state. Under suitable smoothness assumptions, we approximate the solution in terms of a time dependent coherent state, whose phase and amplitude can be determined by a classical flow. The error can be estimated in $L^2$ by $C \sqrt {\var}$, $\var$ being the Planck constant. Finally we present a full formal asymptotic expansion.

Semiclassical limit for mixed states with singular and rough potentials

We consider the semiclassical limit for the Heisenberg-von Neumann equation with a potential which consists of the sum of a repulsive Coulomb potential, plus a Lipschitz potential whose gradient belongs to $BV$; this assumption on the potential guarantees the well posedness of the Liouville equation in the space of bounded integrable solutions. We find sufficient conditions on the initial data to ensure that the quantum dynamics converges to the classical one. More precisely, we consider the Husimi functions of the solution of the Heisenberg-von Neumann equation, and under suitable assumptions on the initial data we prove that they converge, as $\e \to 0$, to the unique bounded solution of the Liouville equation (locally uniformly in time).
