Comparison of Some Exact and Perturbative Results for a Supersymmetric SU($N_c$) Gauge Theory

We consider vectorial, asymptotically free ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric SU($N_c$) gauge theories with $N_f$ copies of massless chiral super fields in various representations and study how perturbative predictions for the lower boundary of the infrared conformal phase, as a function of $N_f$, compare with exact results. We make use of two-loop and three-loop calculations of the beta function and anomalous dimension of the quadratic chiral super field operator product for this purpose. The specific chiral superfield contents that we consider are $N_f$ copies of (i) $F+\bar F$, (ii) $Adj$, (iii) $S_2+\bar S_2$, and (iv) $A_2 + \bar A_2$, where $F$, $Adj$, $S_2$, and $A_2$ denote, respectively, the fundamental, adjoint, and symmetric and antisymmetric rank-2 tensor representations. We find that perturbative results slightly overestimate the value of $N_{f,cr}$ relative to the respective exact results for these representations, i.e., slightly underestimate the interval in $N_f$ for which the theory has infrared conformal behavior. Our results provide a measure of how closely perturbative calculations reproduce exact results for these theories.

Technicolor Models with Color-Singlet Technifermions and their Ultraviolet Extensions

We study technicolor models in which all of the technifermions are color-singlets, focusing on the case in these fermions transform according to the fundamental representation of the technicolor gauge group. Our analysis includes a derivation of restrictions on the weak hypercharge assignments for the technifermions and additional color-singlet, technisinglet fermions arising from the necessity of avoiding stable bound states with exotic electric charges. Precision electroweak constraints on these models are also discussed. We determine some general properties of extended technicolor theories containing these technicolor sectors.

Higher-Loop Corrections to the Infrared Evolution of a Gauge Theory with Fermions

We consider a vectorial, asymptotically free gauge theory and analyze the effect of higher-loop corrections to the beta function on the evolution of the theory from the ultraviolet to the infrared. We study the case in which the theory contains $N_f$ copies of a fermion transforming according to the fundamental representation and several higher-dimensional representations of the gauge group. We also calculate higher-loop values of the anomalous dimension of the mass, $γ_m$ of $\barψψ$ at the infrared zero of the beta function. We find that for a given theory, the values of $γ_m$ calculated to three- and four-loop order, and evaluated at the infrared zero computed to the same order, tend to be somewhat smaller than the value calculated to two-loop order. The results are compared with recent lattice simulations.

Patterns of Dynamical Gauge Symmetry Breaking

We construct and analyze theories with a gauge symmetry in the ultraviolet of the form $G \otimes G_b$, in which the vectorial, asymptotically free $G_b$ gauge interaction becomes strongly coupled at a scale where the $G$ interaction is weakly coupled and produces bilinear fermion condensates that dynamically break the $G$ symmetry. Comparisons are given between Higgs and dynamical symmetry breaking mechanisms for various models.

Infrared Evolution and Phase Structure of a Gauge Theory Containing Different Fermion Representations

We study the evolution of an asymptotically free vectorial SU($N$) gauge theory from the ultraviolet to the infrared and the resultant phase structure in the general case in which the theory contains fermions transforming according to several different representations of the gauge group. We discuss the sequential fermion condensation and dynamical mass generation that occur, and comment on the effect of bare fermion mass terms.

Study of an Alternate Mechanism for the Origin of Fermion Generations

In usual extended technicolor (ETC) theories based on the group ${\rm{SU}(N_{ETC}})_{ETC}$, the quarks of charge 2/3 and -1/3 and the charged leptons of all generations arise from ETC fermion multiplets transforming according to the fundamental representation. Here we investigate a different idea for the origin of SM fermion generations, in which quarks and charged leptons of different generations arise from ETC fermions transforming according to different representations of ${\rm{SU}(N_{ETC}})_{ETC}$. Although this mechanism would have the potential, {\it a priori}, to allow a reduction in the value of $N_{ETC}$ relative to conventional ETC models, we show that, at least in simple models, it is excluded by the fact that the technicolor sector is not asymptotically free or by the appearance of fermions with exotic quantum numbers which are not observed.

Generational Structure of Models with Dynamical Symmetry Breaking

In models with dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, this breaking is normally communicated to quarks and leptons by a set of vector bosons with masses generated via sequential breaking of a larger gauge symmetry. In reasonably ultraviolet-complete theories of this type, the number of stages of breaking of the larger gauge symmetry is usually equal to the observed number of quark and lepton generations, $N_{gen.}=3$. Here we investigate the general question of how the construction and properties of these models depend on $N_{gen.}$, regarded as a variable. We build and analyze models with illustrative values of $N_{gen.}$ different from 3 (namely, $N_{gen.}=1,2,4$) that exhibit the necessary sequential symmetry breaking down to a strongly coupled sector that dynamically breaks electroweak symmetry. Our results for variable $N_{gen.}$ show that one can robustly obtain, for this latter sector, a theory with a gauge coupling that is large but slowly running, controlled by an approximate infrared fixed point of the renormalization group. Owing to this, we find that for all of the values of $N_{gen.}$ considered, standard-model fermions of the highest generation have masses that can be comparable to the electroweak-symmetry breaking scale. We also study the interplay of multiple strongly coupled gauge symmetries in these models.

Extra Electroweak Phase Transitions from Strong Dynamics

We show that models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking can possess an extremely rich finite temperature phase diagram. We suggest that early-universe extra electroweak phase transitions can appear in these models.

The Electroweak Phase Transition in Ultra Minimal Technicolor

We unveil the temperature-dependent electroweak phase transition in new extensions of the Standard Model in which the electroweak symmetry is spontaneously broken via strongly coupled, nearly-conformal dynamics achieved by the means of multiple matter representations. In particular, we focus on the low energy effective theory introduced to describe Ultra Minimal Walking Technicolor at the phase transition. Using the one-loop effective potential with ring improvement, we identify regions of parameter space which yield a strong first order transition. A striking feature of the model is the existence of a second phase transition associated to the electroweak-singlet sector. The interplay between these two transitions leads to an extremely rich phase diagram.

The Conformal Window and Walking Technicolor

I discuss recent progress in the uncovering of the phase diagram of non-supersymmetric gauge theories. The nature of the conformal window for higher dimensional representations suggests a possible way to construct realistic technicolor models. I then explicitly provide two such theories. One of these models also has a natural cold Dark Matter candidate.

Ultra Minimal Technicolor and its Dark Matter TIMP

We introduce an explicit model with technifermion matter transforming according to multiple representations of the underlying technicolor gauge group. The model features simultaneously the smallest possible value of the naive S parameter and the smallest possible number of technifermions. The chiral dynamics is extremely rich. We construct the low-energy effective Lagrangian. We provide both the linearly and non-linearly realized ones. We then embed, in a natural way, the Standard Model (SM) interactions within the global symmetries of the underlying gauge theory. Several low-energy composite particles are SM singlets. One of these Technicolor Interacting Massive Particles (TIMP)s is a natural cold dark matter (DM) candidate. We estimate the fraction of the mass in the universe constituted by our DM candidate over the baryon one. We show that the new TIMP, differently from earlier models, can be sufficiently light to be directly produced and studied at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Supersymmetry Inspired QCD Beta Function

We propose an all orders beta function for ordinary Yang-Mills theories with or without fermions inspired by the Novikov-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov beta function of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories. The beta function allows us to bound the conformal window. When restricting to one adjoint Weyl fermion we show how the proposed beta function matches the one of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The running of the pure Yang-Mills coupling is computed and the deviation from the two loop result is presented. We then compare the deviation with the one obtained from lattice data also with respect to the two loop running.

Conformal Windows of SU(N) Gauge Theories, Higher Dimensional Representations and The Size of The Unparticle World

We present the conformal windows of SU(N) supersymmetric and nonsupersymmetric gauge theories with vector-like matter transforming according to higher irreducible representations of the gauge group. We determine the fraction of asymptotically free theories expected to develop an infrared fixed point and find that it does not depend on the specific choice of the representation. This result is exact in supersymmetric theories while it is an approximate one in the nonsupersymmetric case. The analysis allows us to size the unparticle world related to the existence of underlying gauge theories developing an infrared stable fixed point. We find that exactly 50 % of the asymptotically free theories can develop an infrared fixed point while for the nonsupersymmetric theories it is circa 25 %. When considering multiple representations, only for the nonsupersymmetric case, the conformal regions quickly dominate over the nonconformal ones. For four representations, 70 % of the asymptotically free space is filled by the conformal region. According to our theoretical landscape survey the unparticle physics world occupies a sizable amount of the particle world, at least in theory space, and before mixing it (at the operator level) with the nonconformal one.

Gauge Coupling Unification via A Novel Technicolor Model

We show that the recently proposed minimal walking technicolor theory together with a small modification of the Standard Model fermionic matter content leads to an excellent degree of unification of the gauge couplings. We compare the degree of unification with various time-honored technicolor models and the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We find that, at the one-loop level, the new theory provides a degree of unification higher than any of the other extensions above. The phenomenology of the present model is very rich with various potential dark matter candidates.

Hidden QCD in Chiral Gauge Theories

The 't Hooft and Corrigan-Ramond limits of massless one-flavor QCD consider the two Weyl fermions to be respectively in the fundamental representation or the two index antisymmetric representation of the gauge group. We introduce a limit in which one of the two Weyl fermions is in the fundamental representation and the other in the two index antisymmetric representation of a generic SU(N) gauge group. This theory is chiral and to avoid gauge anomalies a more complicated chiral theory is needed. This is the generalized Georgi-Glashow model with one vector like fermion. We show that there is an interesting phase in which the considered chiral gauge theory, for any N, Higgses via a bilinear condensate: The gauge interactions break spontaneously to ordinary massless one-flavor SU(3) QCD. The additional elementary fermionic matter is uncharged under this SU(3) gauge theory. It is also seen that when the number of colors reduce to three it is exactly this hidden QCD which is revealed.

Chiral Models in Noncommutative N=1/2 Four Dimensional Superspace

We derive the component Lagrangian for a generic N=1/2 supersymmetric chiral model with an arbitrary number of fields in four space-time dimensions. We then investigate a toy model in which the deformation parameter modifies the undeformed potential near the origin of the field space in a way which suggests possible physical applications.
