On the Ultraviolet to Infrared Evolution of Chiral Gauge Theories

We discuss the ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR) evolution of asymptotically free chiral gauge theories. Various types of IR behavior are considered, including confinement without spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, and formation of bilinear fermion condensates that preserve or dynamically break the chiral gauge invariance. We compare different schemes for the study of this evolution and the resultant IR structure of the theories, including a conjectured inequality based on the counting of degrees of freedom. We note some new patterns of UV to IR evolution.

Lattice Gauge Theories at the Energy Frontier

This White Paper has been prepared as a planning document for the Division of High Energy Physics of the U. S. Department of Energy. Recent progress in lattice-based studies of physics beyond the standard model is summarized, and major current goals of USQCD research in this area are presented. Challenges and opportunities associated with the recently discovered 126 GeV Higgs-like particle are highlighted. Computational resources needed for reaching important goals are described. The document was finalized on February 11, 2013 with references that are not aimed to be complete, or account for an accurate historical record of the field.

Approaching Conformality with Ten Flavors

We present first results for lattice simulations, on a single volume, of the low-lying spectrum of an SU(3) Yang-Mills gauge theory with ten light fermions in the fundamental representation. Fits to the fermion mass dependence of various observables are found to be globally consistent with the hypothesis that this theory is within or just outside the strongly-coupled edge of the conformal window, with mass anomalous dimension consistent with 1 over the range of scales simulated. We stress that we cannot rule out the possibility of spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking at scales well below our infrared cutoff. We discuss important systematic effects, including finite-volume corrections, and consider directions for future improvement.

WW Scattering Parameters via Pseudoscalar Phase Shifts

Using domain-wall lattice simulations, we study pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar scattering in the maximal isospin channel for an SU(3) gauge theory with two and six fermion flavors in the fundamental representation. This calculation of the S-wave scattering length is related to the next-to-leading order corrections to WW scattering through the low-energy coefficients of the chiral Lagrangian. While two and six flavor scattering lengths are similar for a fixed ratio of the pseudoscalar mass to its decay constant, six-flavor scattering shows a somewhat less repulsive next-to-leading order interaction than its two-flavor counterpart. Estimates are made for the WW scattering parameters and the plausibility of detection is discussed.

Lattice Simulations and Infrared Conformality

We examine several recent lattice-simulation data sets, asking whether they are consistent with infrared conformality. We observe, in particular, that for an SU(3) gauge theory with 12 Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation, recent simulation data can be described assuming infrared conformality. Lattice simulations include a fermion mass m which is then extrapolated to zero, and we note that this data can be fit by a small-m expansion, allowing a controlled extrapolation. We also note that the conformal hypothesis does not work well for two theories that are known or expected to be confining and chirally broken, and that it does work well for another theory expected to be infrared conformal.

A Light Dilaton in Walking Gauge Theories

We analyze the existence of a dilaton in gauge theories with approximate infrared conformal symmetry. To the extent that these theories are governed in the infrared by an approximate fixed point (walking), the explicit breaking of the conformal symmetry at these scales is vanishingly small. If confinement and spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking set in at some infrared scale, the resultant breaking of the approximate conformal symmetry can lead to the existence of a dilaton with mass parametrically small compared to the confinement scale, and potentially observable at the LHC.

Parity Doubling and the S Parameter Below the Conformal Window

We describe a lattice simulation of the masses and decay constants of the lowest-lying vector and axial resonances, and the electroweak S parameter, in an SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f = 2$ and 6 fermions in the fundamental representation. The spectrum becomes more parity doubled and the S parameter per electroweak doublet decreases when $N_f$ is increased from 2 to 6, motivating study of these trends as $N_f$ is increased further, toward the critical value for transition from confinement to infrared conformality.

Toward TeV Conformality

We study the chiral condensate $<\barψ ψ>$ for an SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f$ massless Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation when $N_f$ is increased from 2 to 6. For $N_f=2$, our lattice simulations of $<\barψ ψ>/F^3$, where $F$ is the Nambu-Goldstone-boson decay constant, agree with the measured QCD value. For $N_f = 6$, this ratio shows significant enhancement, presaging an even larger enhancement anticipated as $N_f$ increases further, toward the critical value for transition from confinement to infrared conformality.

Lattice Study of Conformal Behavior in SU(3) Yang-Mills Theories

Using lattice simulations, we study the extent of the conformal window for an SU(3) gauge theory with N_f Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. We extend our recently reported work, describing the general framework and the lattice simulations in more detail. We find that the theory is conformal in the infrared for N_f = 12, governed by an infrared fixed point, whereas the N_f = 8 theory exhibits confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. We therefore conclude that the low end of the conformal window N_f^c lies in the range 8 <= N_f^c <= 12. We discuss open questions and the potential relevance of the present work to physics beyond the standard model.

Lattice Study of the Conformal Window in QCD-like Theories

Using lattice simulations, we study the extent of the conformal window for an $\text{SU}(3)$ gauge theory with $N_f$ Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. We present evidence that the infrared behavior is conformal for $12 \leq N_f \leq 16$, governed by an infrared fixed point, while confinement and chiral symmetry breaking are present for $N_f \leq 8$.

SU(3) Family Gauge Symmetry and the Axion

We analyze the structure of a recently proposed effective field theory (EFT) for the generation of quark and lepton mass ratios and mixing angles, based on the spontaneous breaking of an SU(3) family gauge symmetry at a high scale F. We classify the Yukawa operators necessary to seed the masses, making use of the continuous global symmetries that they preserve. One global U(1), in addition to baryon number and electroweak hypercharge, remains unbroken after the inclusion of all operators required by standard-model-fermion phenomenology. An associated vacuum symmetry insures the vanishing of the first-family quark and charged-lepton masses in the absence of the family gauge interaction. If this U(1) symmetry is taken to be exact in the EFT, broken explicitly by only the QCD-induced anomaly, and if the breaking scale F is taken to lie in the range 10 to 9 - 10 to 12 GeV, then the associated Nambu-Goldstone boson is a potential QCD axion.

Neutrinos and SU(3) Family Gauge Symmetry

We include the standard-model (SM) leptons in a recently proposed framework for the generation of quark mass ratios and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) mixing angles from an SU(3) family gauge interaction. The set of SM-singlet scalar fields describing the spontaneous breaking is the same as employed for the quark sector. The imposition at tree-level of the experimentally correct Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) mixing matrix, in the form of a tri-bi maximal structure, fixes several of the otherwise free parameters and renders the model predictive. The normal hierarchy among the neutrino masses emerges from this scheme.

Quark Mass Ratios and Mixing Angles from SU(3) Family Gauge Symmetry

We explore a framework for the computation of quark mass ratios and CKM mixing angles based on an SU(3) family gauge symmetry. The four ratios md/mb, ms/mb, mu/mt, and mc/mt can be fit at one-loop in the family gauge interaction. The same is true of the quark mixing angles theta12 and theta23, although the result for theta13 is too small. The CP violating phase is naturally O(1).

Breaking Discrete Symmetries in Broken Gauge Theories

We study the spontaneous breaking of discrete symmetries in theories with broken gauge symmetry. The intended application is to CP breaking in theories with gauged flavor symmetries, but the analysis described here is preliminary. We dispense with matter fields and take the gauge theory to be weakly coupled and broken spontaneously by unspecified, short-distance forces. We develop an effective-field-theory description of the resultant low energy theory, and ask whether this theory by itself can describe the subsequent breaking of discrete symmetries. We conclude that this can happen depending on the parameters of the effective theory, and that the intrinsic violation is naturally of order unity.

Flavor-Changing Processes in Extended Technicolor

We analyze constraints on a class of extended technicolor (ETC) models from neutral flavor-changing processes induced by (dimension-six) four-fermion operators. The ETC gauge group is taken to commute with the standard-model gauge group. The models in the class are distinguished by how the left- and right-handed $(L,R)$ components of the quarks and charged leptons transform under the ETC group. We consider $K^{0} - \bar K^0$ and other pseudoscalar meson mixings, and conclude that they are adequately suppressed if the $L$ and $R$ components of the relevant quarks are assigned to the same (fundamental or conjugate-fundamental) representation of the ETC group. Models in which the $L$ and $R$ components of the down-type quarks are assigned to relatively conjugate representations, while they can lead to realistic CKM mixing and intra-family mass splittings, do not adequately suppress these mixing processes. We identify an approximate global symmetry that elucidates these behavioral differences and can be used to analyze other possible representation assignments. Flavor-changing decays, involving quarks and/or leptons, are adequately suppressed for any ETC-representation assignment of the $L$ and $R$ components of the quarks, as well as the leptons. We draw lessons for future ETC model building.

Quark Dipole Operators in Extended Technicolor Models

We study diagonal and transition quark dipole operators in a class of extended technicolor (ETC) models, taking account of the multiscale nature of the ETC gauge symmetry breaking and of the mixing among ETC interaction eigenstates. Because of this mixing, terms involving the lowest ETC scale can play an important role in dipole operators, and we focus on these terms. We derive from experiment new correlated constraints on the quark mixing angles and phases. Our bounds yield information on mixing angles individually in the up- and down-sectors, for both left- and right-handed quark fields and thus constrain even quark mixing parameters that do not enter in the CKM matrix. With phases of order unity, we conclude that these mixing angles are small, constraining future ETC model building, but plausibly in the range suggested by the size of the CKM elements. These values still allow substantial deviations from the standard model predictions, in particular for several CP violating quantities, including the asymmetries in $b \to s γ$ and $B_{d} \to ϕK_S$, $Re(ε^\prime/ε)$, and the electric dipole moments of the neutron and the ${}^{199}$Hg atom.

Phase Structure of Non-Compact QED3 and the Abelian Higgs Model

We review the phase structure of a three-dimensional, non-compact Abelian gauge theory (QED3) as a function of the number $N$ of 4-component massless fermions. There is a critical $N_{c}$ up to which there is dynamical fermion mass generation and an associated global symmetry breaking. We discuss various approaches to the determination of $N_c$, which lead to estimates ranging from $N_c =1$ to $N_c =4$. This theory with N=2 has been employed as an effective continuum theory for the 2D quantum antiferromagnet where the observed Neel ordering corresponds to dynamical fermion mass generation. Thus the value of $N_c$ is of some physical interest. We also consider the phase structure of the model with a finite gauge boson mass (the Abelian Higgs model).

Lepton Dipole Moments in Extended Technicolor Models

We analyze the diagonal and transition magnetic and electric dipole moments of charged leptons in extended technicolor (ETC) models, taking account of the multiscale nature of the ETC gauge symmetry breaking, conformal (walking) behavior of the technicolor theory, and mixing in the charged-lepton mass matrix. We show that mixing effects dominate the ETC contributions to charged lepton electric dipole moments and that these can yield a value of |d_e| comparable to the current limit. The rate for mu to e gamma can also be close to its limit. From these and other processes we derive constraints on the charged lepton mixing angles. The constraints are such that the ETC contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, which includes a significant lepton mixing term, can approach, but does not exceed, the current sensitivity level.
