High-Speed Semi-FE Readout Module for ATLAS MDT at HL-LHC: Design and Production-Level Characterization

The High-Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) introduces increased demands on the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer, particularly in terms of data throughput, timing distribution and system reliability. The Phase-II Chamber Service Module (CSM) is a key component of the upgraded Monitored Drift Tube (MDT) trigger and readout system, providing a high-speed interface between the front-end electronics and the backend systems. This paper describes the design and implementation of the Phase-II CSM, together with its validation. The results show that the CSM supports two independent optical uplinks, each operating at a line rate of 10.24 Gbps, together with clock distribution and slow control in the expected operating environment. Integration with small-diameter MDT (sMDT) chambers and tests with the prototype L0MDT trigger system are also presented. The CSM boards are now in production and will be used for installation and integration during the upcoming LHC Long Shutdown.

High Throughput Screening of Expression Constructs using Microcapillary Arrays

Gene expression is a complex phenomenon involving numerous interlinked variables, and studying these variables to control expression is essential in bioengineering and biomanufacturing. While cloning techniques for achieving plasmid libraries that cover large design spaces exist, multiplex techniques offering cell culture screening at similar scales are still lacking. We introduced a microcapillary array-based platform aimed at high-throughput, multiplex screening of miniature cell cultures through fluorescent reporters.

Text-to-speech for the hearing impaired

Text-to-speech (TTS) systems offer the opportunity to compensate for a hearing loss at the source rather than correcting for it at the receiving end. This removes limitations such as time constraints for algorithms that amplify a sound in a hearing aid and can lead to higher speech quality. We propose an algorithm that restores loudness to normal perception at a high resolution in time, frequency and level, and embed it in a TTS system that uses Tacotron2 and WaveGlow to produce individually amplified speech. Subjective evaluations of speech quality showed that the proposed algorithm led to high-quality audio with sound quality similar to original or linearly amplified speech but considerably higher speech intelligibility in noise. Transfer learning led to a quick adaptation of the produced spectra from original speech to individually amplified speech, resulted in high speech quality and intelligibility, and thus gives us a way to train an individual TTS system efficiently.

An In Vitro Nematic Model for Proliferating Cell Cultures

Confluent populations of elongated cells give rise to ordered patterns seen in nematic phase liquid crystals. We correlate cell elongation and intercellular distance with intercellular alignment using an amorphous spin glass model. We compare in vitro time-lapse imaging with Monte Carlo simulation results by framing a novel hard ellipses model in terms of Boltzmann statistics. Furthermore, we find a statistically distinct alignment energy at quasi-steady state among fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, and pluripotent cell populations when cultured in vitro. These findings have important implications in both non-invasive clinical screening of the stem cell differentiation process and in relating shape parameters to coupling in active crystal systems such as nematic cell monolayers.
