Uniqueness of gluings and virtual finiteness of pseudo-Anosov flows on graph manifolds

In this article, we give a characterization of when two pseudo-Anosov flows obtained via gluings of pieces of pseudo-Anosov flows are orbit equivalent. As an application of this work, and the description of pseudo-Anosov flows in Seifert pieces due to Barbot and Fenley, we prove a ``virtual'' version of the Finiteness Conjecture for transitive pseudo-Anosov flows on graph-manifolds.

Finiteness of veering triangulations

We show that a finite volume cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold admits at most finitely many veering triangulations, and in fact this number is bounded above by the number of Giroux torsion free tight contact structures. This resolves Kirby problem K3 3.21e. More generally, for any 3-manifold $M$ and any link $L$, we show finiteness for the family of pseudo-Anosov flows which admits a \emph{strictly positive Birkhoff section relative to $L$}. Combined with work of Li, this implies that a fixed closed $3$-manifold admits at most finitely many pseudo-Anosov flows without perfect fits. This resolves Kirby problem K3 3.21d.

Pseudo-Anosov flows and the geometry of Anosov-like group actions

We show that the action on its orbit space induced by a pseudo-Anosov flow on a closed $3$-manifold (and more general Anosov-like actions) can be seen as an isometric action on a Gromov-hyperbolic space. When the flow is not $\R$-covered, we show that this action admits elements that are weakly properly discontinuous and deduce that elements of $π_1(M)$ that do \emph{not} represent a periodic orbit of the flow are generic for any word metric coming from a finite generating set. We also give a number of other geometric group-theoretic results for Anosov-like group actions on bifoliated planes.

Non-transitive pseudo-Anosov flows

We study (topological) pseudo-Anosov flows from the perspective of the associated group actions on their orbit spaces and boundary at infinity. We extend the definition of Anosov-like action from [BFM22] from the transitive to the general non-transitive context and show that one can recover the basic sets of a flow, the Smale order on basic sets, and their essential features, from such general group actions. Using these tools, we prove that a pseudo-Anosov flow in a $3$ manifold is entirely determined by the associated action of the fundamental group on the boundary at infinity of its orbit space. We also give a proof that any topological pseudo-Anosov flow on an atoroidal 3-manifold is necessarily transitive, and prove that density of periodic orbits implies transitivity, in the topological rather than smooth case.

Pseudo-Anosov Flows: A Plane Approach

In this text we (re)-tell the theory of pseudo-Anosov flows on 3-manifolds with the orbit space as the central character; via a streamlined framework called {\em Anosov-like group actions}. This brings a simplified and unified perspective, and allows for the import of tools from 1- and 2-dimensional topological dynamics. In so doing, we are able to give a relatively efficient presentation (or re-presentation) of foundational results in the field which appeared over several decades and many papers. We hope that the reader, whether a beginning or more advanced topologist or dynamicist, finds this a welcoming invitation to the rich theory of pseudo-Anosov flows.

Transitive Anosov flows on non-compact manifolds

In this article we study topological transitivity of Anosov flows on non-compact 3-manifolds. We provide homological conditions under which the lifts of a transitive Anosov flow to certain infinite covers of the manifold remain transitive. With some deep results in 3-manifold topology, we then deduce that such cover can be obtained for any non-graph manifold admitting a transitive Anosov flow. Moreover, for a large class of Anosov flows known as $\mathbb{R}$-covered, which are always transitive, we show that their lifts to any regular covers are either transitive or consist exclusively of wandering orbits. Finally, we construct a family of transitive Anosov flows on non-compact manifolds that satisfy a homotopical characterization of suspension flows, answering the flow version of a question concerning the existence of transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms on non-compact manifolds.

Reconstructing flows from the orbit space

We give some simple conditions under which a group acting on a bifoliated plane comes from the induced action of a pseudo-Anosov flow on its orbit space. An application of the strategy is a less technical proof of a result of Barbot that the induced action of an Anosov flow on its orbit space uniquely determines the flow up to orbit equivalence. In another application, we recover an expansive flow on a 3-manifold from the action of a group on a \emph{loom space} as defined by Schleimer and Segerman.

A Smörgåsbord of (bi)contact structures, Reeb flows and pseudo-Anosov flows

This note was written for the proceedings of the conference "Symplectic Geometry and Anosov Flows" held in Heideleberg in July 2024. It is meant as an invitation to the study of certain families of contact structures, centering around the following question: ``How much can one relate the dynamics of two distinct Reeb flows of the same contact structure?'' We gather some results as well as state many more questions and conjectures around that theme.

Completing Prelaminations

Motivated by problems in the study of Anosov and pseudo-Anosov flows on 3-manifolds, we characterize when a pair $(L^+, L^-)$ of subsets of transverse laminations of the circle can be completed to a pair of transverse foliations of the plane or, separately, realized as the endpoints of such a bifoliation of the plane. (We allow also singular bifoliations with simple prongs, such as arise in pseudo-Anosov flows). This program is carried out at a level of generality applicable to bifoliations coming from pseudo-Anosov flows with and without perfect fits, as well as many other examples, and is natural with respect to group actions preserving these structures.

Anosov flows with the same periodic orbits

In [Orbit equivalences of pseudo-Anosov flows, arXiv:2211.10505], it was proved that transitive pseudo-Anosov flows on any closed 3-manifold are determined up to orbit equivalence by the set of free homotopy classes represented by periodic orbits, provided their orbit space does not contain a feature called a "tree of scalloped regions." In this article we describe what happens in these exceptional cases: we show what topological features in the manifold correspond to trees of scalloped regions, completely classify the flows which do have the same free homotopy data, and construct explicit examples of flows with the same free homotopy data that are not orbit equivalent.

Orbit equivalences of $\mathbb{R}$-covered Anosov flows and hyperbolic-like actions on the line

We prove a rigidity result for group actions on the line whose elements have what we call "hyperbolic-like" dynamics. Using this, we give a spectral rigidity theorem for $\mathbb{R}$-covered Anosov flows on 3-manifolds, characterizing orbit equivalent flows in terms of the elements of the fundamental group represented by periodic orbits. As consequences of this, we give an efficient criterion to determine the isotopy classes of self orbit equivalences of $\mathbb{R}$-covered Anosov flows, and prove finiteness of contact Anosov flows on any given manifold. In the appendix with Jonathan Bowden, we prove that orbit equivalences of contact Anosov flows correspond exactly to isomorphisms of the associated contact structures. This gives a powerful tool to translate results on Anosov flows to contact geometry and vice versa. We illustrate its use by giving two new results in contact geometry: the existence of manifolds with arbitrarily many distinct Anosov contact structures, answering a question of Foulon--Hasselblatt--Vaugon, and a virtual description of the group of contact transformations of a contact Anosov structure, generalizing a result of Giroux and Massot.

Orbit equivalences of pseudo-Anosov flows

We prove a classification theorem for transitive Anosov and pseudo-Anosov flows on closed 3-manifolds, up to orbit equivalence. In many cases, flows on a 3-manifold $M$ are completely determined by the set of free homotopy classes of their (unoriented) periodic orbits. The exceptional cases are flows with a special structure in their orbit space called a ``tree of scalloped regions"; in these cases the set of free homotopy classes of unoriented periodic orbits together with the additional data of a choice of sign for each $π_1(M)$-orbit of tree gives a complete invariant of orbit equivalence classes of flows. The framework for the proof is a more general result about \emph{Anosov-like actions} of abstract groups on bifoliated planes, showing that the homeomorphism type of the bifoliation and the conjugacy class of the action can be recovered from knowledge of which elements of the group act with fixed points. As a consequence, we show that Anosov flows are determined up to orbit equivalence by the action on the ideal boundary of their orbit spaces, and more generally that transitive Anosov-like actions on bifoliated planes are determined up to conjugacy by their actions on the plane's ideal boundary: any conjugacy between two such actions on their ideal circles can be extended uniquely to a conjugacy on the interior of the plane.

Collapsed Anosov flows and self orbit equivalences

We propose a generalization of the concept of discretized Anosov flows that covers a wide class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in 3-manifolds, and that we call collapsed Anosov flows. They are related with Anosov flows via a self orbit equivalence of the flow. We show that all the examples constructed in a paper by Bonatti, Gogolev, Hammerlindl and the third author belong to this class, and that it is an open and closed class among partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. We provide some equivalent definitions which may be more amenable to analysis and are useful in different situations. Conversely we describe the class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms that are collapsed Anosov flows associated with certain types of Anosov flows.

Partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms homotopic to the identity in dimension 3, Part I: The dynamically coherent case

We study 3-dimensional dynamically coherent partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms that are homotopic to the identity, focusing on the transverse geometry and topology of the center stable and center unstable foliations, and the dynamics within their leaves. We find a structural dichotomy for these foliations, which we use to show that every such diffeomorphism on a hyperbolic or Seifert fibered 3-manifold is leaf conjugate to the time one map of a (topological) Anosov flow. This proves a classification conjecture of Hertz-Hertz-Ures in hyperbolic 3-manifolds and in the homotopy class of the identity of Seifert manifolds.

Partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms homotopic to the identity in dimension 3, Part II: Branching foliations

We study $3$-dimensional partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms that are homotopic to the identity, focusing on the geometry and dynamics of Burago and Ivanov's center stable and center unstable \emph{branching} foliations. This extends our study of the true foliations that appear in the dynamically coherent case (see \emph{Partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms homotopic to the identity in dimension 3, Part I: The dynamically coherent case}, arxiv:1908.06227v3). We complete the classification of such diffeomorphisms in Seifert fibered manifolds. In hyperbolic manifolds, we show that any such diffeomorphism is either dynamically coherent and has a power that is a discretized Anosov flow, or is of a new potential class called a \emph{double translation}.

Geometry and entropies in a fixed conformal class on surfaces

We show the flexibility of the metric entropy and obtain additional restrictions on the topological entropy of geodesic flow on closed surfaces of negative Euler characteristic with smooth non-positively curved Riemannian metrics with fixed total area in a fixed conformal class. Moreover, we obtain a collar lemma, a thick-thin decomposition, and precompactness for the considered class of metrics. Also, we extend some of the results to metrics of fixed total area in a fixed conformal class with no focal points and with some integral bounds on the positive part of the Gaussian curvature.

Dynamical incoherence for a large class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms

We show that if a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism of a Seifert manifold induces a map in the base which has a pseudo-Anosov component then it cannot be dynamically coherent. This extends work of Bonatti, Gogolev, Hammerlindl and Potrie to the whole isotopy class. We relate the techniques with the study of certain partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in hyperbolic 3-manifolds performed in the previous paper by the authors. The appendix reviews some consequences of the Nielsen-Thurston classification of surface homeomorphisms to the dynamics of lifts of such maps to the universal cover.

A note on self orbit equivalences of Anosov flows and bundles with fiberwise Anosov flows

We show that a self orbit equivalence of a transitive Anosov flow on a $3$-manifold which is homotopic to identity has to either preserve every orbit or the Anosov flow is $\mathbb{R}$-covered and the orbit equivalence has to be of a specific type. This result shows that one can remove a relatively unnatural assumption in a result of Farrell and Gogolev about the topological rigidity of bundles supporting a fiberwise Anosov flow when the fiber is $3$-dimensional.
