Two-Loop Anomalous Dimension for Non-Global and Clustering Logarithms

We derive the two-loop anomalous dimension relevant for the resummation of subleading non-global and, for the first time, also clustering logarithms within the framework of effective field theory. Special emphasis is put on the choice of the renormalization scheme. We show that the modified minimal subtraction scheme is problematic since it requires extra dimensions to set up the parton shower to perform the resummation. We discuss a set of modified dipole subtraction schemes which are free from this complication and can be used to obtain a frame-independent result for the renormalization-group evolution. We implement the leading-color limit of our result in the Marzili framework and numerically verify the scheme independence for gap-between-jets cross sections.

Factorization Beyond Coherence

We derive a novel factorization theorem for $N$-jettiness at hadron colliders, which incorporates coherence-violating effects induced by Glauber gluons and several new momentum modes. Their interplay generates coherence-violating logarithms (CVLs) starting at four-loop ($N\ge1$) or five-loop order ($N=0$). We calculate the anomalous dimensions required for the resummation of CVLs and establish a general framework for the systematic treatment of coherence violation. Our findings imply that most existing factorization formulas for global LHC observables must be revised.

Low-energy theory of jet processes and PDF factorization

The consistency of collinear factorization violation with PDF factorization has been an outstanding challenge and subject of considerable debate. In this work we demonstrate their compatibility using a factorization theorem for non-global jet observables. Our analysis relies on consistency relations derived from renormalization conditions in effective field theory. We verify these relations through an explicit computation at three-loop order and show that the double-logarithmic evolution sourcing the super-leading logarithms reduces to single-logarithmic DGLAP running below the lowest perturbative scale. The crucial ingredient reconciling the two evolutions is a perturbative Glauber contribution to the low-energy matrix elements which breaks soft-collinear factorization at the cross section level but restores PDF factorization.

Super-Leading Logarithms in $pp\to2$ Jets

Jet observables at hadron colliders feature ''super-leading'' logarithms, double-logarithmic corrections resulting from a breakdown of color coherence due to complex phases in hard-scattering amplitudes. While these effects only arise in high orders of perturbation theory and are suppressed in the large-$N_c$ limit, they formally constitute leading logarithmic corrections to the cross sections. We present the first analysis of the corresponding contributions to a hadronic cross section, including all partonic channels and interference effects. Interestingly, some interference terms in partonic $q\bar q\to q\bar q$ scattering are only linearly suppressed in $1/N_c$. Our results for the $pp\to 2$ jets gap-between-jets cross section demonstrate the numerical importance of super-leading logarithms for small values of the veto scale $Q_0$, showing that these contributions should be accounted for in precision studies of such observables.

Factorization restoration through Glauber gluons

We analyze the low-energy dynamics of gap-between-jets cross sections at hadron colliders, for which phase factors in the hard amplitudes spoil collinear cancellations and lead to double (``super-leading'') logarithmic behavior. Based on a method-of-regions analysis, we identify three-loop contributions from perturbative active-active Glauber-gluon exchanges with the right structure to render the cross section consistent with PDF factorization below the gap veto scale. The Glauber contributions we identify are unambiguously defined without regulators beyond dimensional regularization.

Factorization and Resummation for Sequential Recombination Jet Cross Sections

We extend the class of factorization theorems for non-global observables from fixed angular constraints to cross sections defined in terms of sequential jet clustering. The associated hard and soft functions depend not only on the directions of the hard partons, but also on their energy fractions. We derive the one-loop anomalous dimension of the hard functions that drives the leading-logarithmic resummation. The anomalous dimension imposes energy ordering, which simplifies the clustering sequence. We perform resummations for gap-between-jet observables defined with different jet algorithms and explain the effects of the clustering on the importance of secondary emissions and on the effective gap size.

Factorization of Non-Global LHC Observables and Resummation of Super-Leading Logarithms

We present a systematic formalism based on a factorization theorem in soft-collinear effective theory to describe non-global observables at hadron colliders, such as gap-between-jets cross sections. The cross sections are factorized into convolutions of hard functions, capturing the dependence on the partonic center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{\hat s}$, and low-energy matrix elements, which are sensitive to the low scale $Q_0\ll\sqrt{\hat s}$ characteristic of the veto imposed on energetic emissions into the gap between the jets. The scale evolution of both objects is governed by a renormalization-group equation, which we derive at one-loop order. By solving the evolution equation for the hard functions for arbitrary $2\to M$ jet processes in the leading logarithmic approximation, we accomplish for the first time the all-order resummation of the so-called "super-leading logarithms" discovered in 2006, thereby solving an old problem of quantum field theory. We study the numerical size of the corresponding effects for different partonic scattering processes and explain why they are sizable for $pp\to 2\,\text{jets}$ processes, but suppressed in $H/Z$ and $H/Z$+jet production. The super-leading logarithms are given by an alternating series, whose individual terms can be much larger than the resummed result, even in very high orders of the loop expansion. Resummation is therefore essential to control these effects. We find that the asymptotic fall-off of the resummed series is much weaker than for standard Sudakov form factors.

Resummation of Next-to-Leading Non-Global Logarithms at the LHC

In cross sections with angular cuts, an intricate pattern of enhanced higher-order corrections known as non-global logarithms arises. The leading logarithmic terms were computed numerically two decades ago, but the resummation of subleading non-global logarithms remained a challenge that we solve in this Letter using renormalization group methods in effective field theory. To achieve next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, we implement the two-loop anomalous dimension governing the resummation of non-global logarithms into a large-$N_c$ parton shower framework, together with one-loop matching corrections. As a first application, we study the interjet energy flow in $e^+e^-$ annihilation into two jets. We then present, for the first time, resummed predictions at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy for a gap-between-jets observable at hadron colliders.

QCD anatomy of photon isolation

To separate the energetic photons produced in hard scattering processes from those from other sources, measurements impose isolation requirements which restrict the hadronic radiation inside a cone around the photon. In this paper, we perform a detailed factorization analysis of the QCD effects associated with photon isolation. We show that for small cone radius $R$, photon isolation effects can be captured by a fragmentation function describing the decay of a parton into a photon accompanied by hadronic radiation. We compute this fragmentation function for different isolation criteria and solve the associated renormalization group equations to resum logarithms of $R$. For small isolation energy, the cone fragmentation function factorizes further, into collinear functions describing energetic quarks and gluons near the cone boundary and functions encoding their soft radiation emitted into the cone. Based on this factorization we also resum the non-global logarithms of the ratio of the photon energy and the isolation energy, so that we control all logarithmically enhanced terms in the cross section. Finally, we provide a simple formula to convert NNLO cross section results from smooth-cone isolation to fixed-cone isolation.

Two-loop anomalous dimension for the resummation of non-global observables

The soft radiation emitted in jet cross sections can resolve the directions and colors of individual hard partons, leading to a complicated pattern of logarithmically enhanced terms in the perturbative series. Starting from a factorization theorem and solving the renormalization group equations for its ingredients, these large logarithms can be resummed. In this paper, we extract the two-loop anomalous dimension governing the resummation of subleading logarithms in jet cross sections and other non-global observables. This anomalous dimension can be obtained by considering soft limits of hard amplitudes, but the presence of collinear singularities in intermediate expressions makes its extraction delicate. As a consistency check, we use our results to predict the known subleading non-global logarithms in the two-jet cross section.

Resummation of Super-Leading Logarithms

Jet cross sections at high-energy colliders exhibit intricate patterns of logarithmically enhanced higher-order corrections. In particular, so-called non-global logarithms emerge from soft radiation emitted off energetic partons inside jets. While this is a single-logarithmic effect at lepton colliders, at hadron colliders phase factors in the amplitudes lead to double-logarithmic corrections starting at four-loop order. This effect was discovered a long time ago, but not much is known about the higher-order behavior of these terms and their process dependence. We derive, for the first time, the all-order structure of these "super-leading logarithms" for generic $2\to l$ scattering processes at hadron colliders and resum them in closed form.

Fiducial $q_T$ resummation of color-singlet processes at N$^3$LL+NNLO

We present a framework for $q_T$ resummation at N$^3$LL+NNLO accuracy for arbitrary color-singlet processes based on a factorization theorem in SCET. Our implementation CuTe-MCFM is fully differential in the Born kinematics and matches to large-$q_T$ fixed-order predictions at relative order $\alpha_s^2$. It provides an efficient way to estimate uncertainties from fixed-order truncation, resummation, and parton distribution functions. In addition to $W^\pm$, $Z$ and $H$ production, also the diboson processes $\gamma\gamma,Z\gamma,ZH$ and $W^\pm H$ are available, including decays. We discuss and exemplify the framework with several direct comparisons to experimental measurements as well as inclusive benchmark results. In particular, we present novel results for $\gamma\gamma$ and $Z\gamma$ at N$^3$LL+NNLO and discuss in detail the power corrections induced by photon isolation requirements.

Resummation of non-global logarithms in cross sections with massive particles

A factorization formalism for jet processes involving massive colored particles such as the top quark is developed, extending earlier results for the massless case. The factorization of soft emissions from the underlying hard process is implemented in an effective field theory framework, which forms the basis for the resummation of large logarithms. The renormalization group evolution giving rise to non-global logarithms is implemented into a parton shower code in the large-$N_c$ limit. After a comparison of the massive and massless radiations patterns, the cross section for $t\bar{t}$ production with a veto on additional central jet activity is computed, taking into account radiation both from the production and the decay of the top quarks. The resummation of the leading logarithms leads to an improved description of ATLAS measurements at $\sqrt{s}=7\,{\rm TeV}$.

Infrared Singularities of Scattering Amplitudes and N$^3$LL Resummation for $n$-Jet Processes

We revisit the multi-loop structure of the anomalous-dimension matrix governing the infrared divergences of massless $n$-particle scattering amplitudes in non-abelian gauge theories. In particular, we derive its most general form at four-loop order, significantly simplifying corresponding expressions given previously. By carefully reevaluating the constraints imposed by two-particle collinear limits, we find that at four-loop order color structures involving $d_R^{abcd}$, the symmetrized trace of four group generators, appear along with cusp logarithms $\ln[\mu^2/(-s_{ij})]$. As a consequence, naive Casimir scaling of the cusp anomalous dimensions associated with the quark and gluon form factors is violated, while a generalized form of Casimir scaling still holds. Our results provide an important ingredient for resummations of large logarithms in $n$-jet cross sections with next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithmic (N$^3$LL) accuracy.

Event-Based Transverse Momentum Resummation

We have developed a framework for automated transverse momentum resummation for arbitrary electroweak final states based on reweighting tree-level events. It is fully differential in the kinematics of the electroweak final states, which facilitates a straightforward analysis of arbitrary observables in the small transverse momentum region. We have implemented the resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and match to next-to-leading fixed-order results using the event generator MadGraph5_aMC@NLO. Results for $Z$ and $W$ boson production with leptonic decay as well as $WZ$ production are presented. We compare to experimental measurements for the transverse momentum and the angular observable $\phi^*$.

NLL${'}$ resummation of jet mass

Starting from a factorization theorem in effective field theory, we present resummed results for two non-global observables: the invariant-mass distribution of jets and the energy distribution outside jets. Our results include the full next-to-leading-order corrections to the hard, jet and soft functions and are implemented in a parton-shower framework which generates the renormalization-group running in the effective theory. The inclusion of these matching corrections leads to an improved description of the data and reduced theoretical uncertainties. They will have to be combined with two-loop running in the future, but our results are an important first step towards the higher-logarithmic resummation of non-global observables.

Non-global logarithms in jet and isolation cone cross sections

Starting from a factorization theorem in effective field theory, we derive a parton-shower equation for the resummation of non-global logarithms. We have implemented this shower and interfaced it with a tree-level event generator to obtain an automated framework to resum the leading logarithm of non-global observables in the large-$N_c$ limit. Using this setup, we compute gap fractions for dijet processes and isolation cone cross sections relevant for photon production. We compare our results with fixed-order computations and LHC measurements. We find that naive exponentiation is often not adequate, especially when the vetoed region is small, since non-global contributions are enhanced due to their dependence on the veto-region size. Since our parton shower is derived from first principles and based on renormalization-group evolution, it is clear what ingredients will have to be included to perform resummations at subleading logarithmic accuracy in the future.
