A precise determination of alpha_s from LEP thrust data using effective field theory

Starting from a factorization theorem in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, the thrust distribution in e+e- collisions is calculated including resummation of the next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithms. This is a significant improvement over previous calculations which were only valid to next-to-leading logarithmic order. The fixed-order expansion of the resummed result approaches the exact fixed-order distribution towards the kinematic endpoint. This close agreement provides a verification of both the effective field theory expression and recently completed next-to-next-to-leading fixed order event shapes. The resummed distribution is then matched to fixed order, resulting in a distribution valid over a large range of thrust. A fit to ALEPH and OPAL data from LEP 1 and LEP 2 produces alpha_s(m_Z)= 0.1172 +/- 0.0010 +/- 0.0008 +/-0.0012 +/- 0.0012, where the uncertainties are respectively statistical, systematic, hadronic, and perturbative. This is one of the world's most precise extractions of alpha_s to date.

Dynamical Threshold Enhancement and Resummation in Drell-Yan Production

Partonic cross sections for the production of massive objects in hadronic collisions receive large corrections when the invariant mass of the initial-state partons is just above the production threshold. Since typically the center-of-mass energy of the hadronic collision is much higher than the mass of the heavy objects, it is not obvious that these contributions translate into large corrections to the hadronic cross section. Using a recent approach to threshold resummation based on effective field theory, we quantify to which extent the fall-off of the parton densities at high x leads to a dynamical enhancement of the partonic threshold region. With the example of Drell-Yan production, we study the emergence of an effective physical scale characterizing the soft emissions in the process. We derive compact analytical expressions for the resummed Drell-Yan cross section and rapidity distribution directly in momentum space. They are free of Landau-pole singularities and are trivially matched onto fixed-order perturbative calculations. Evaluating the resummed cross sections at NNNLL order and matching onto NNLO fixed-order calculations, we perform a detailed numerical analysis of the cross section and rapidity distribution in proton-proton collisions.

Kinetic corrections to B -> X_c l nu at one loop

We evaluate the one-loop corrections to the Wilson coefficient of the kinetic operator in the operator product expansion of the differential B -> X_c l nu decay rate. With a moderate cut on the lepton energy, the one-loop terms change the kinetic operator contributions to spectral moments by about 20%. This amounts to a small correction for leptonic and hadronic moments, except for those which vanish at the lowest order, where the effect can be sizable. Together with a two-loop calculation of the leading-power rate and an evaluation of the one-loop corrections to the Wilson coefficient of the chromo-magnetic operator, our results will allow for a high-precision determination of |V_cb| and the b- and c-quark masses.

Two-loop QED corrections to Bhabha scattering

We obtain a simple relation between massless and massive scattering amplitudes in gauge theories in the limit where all kinematic invariants are large compared to particle masses. We use this relation to derive the two-loop QED corrections to large-angle Bhabha scattering.

Analysis of Br(B-->X_s gamma) at NNLO with a Cut on Photon Energy

By combining a recent estimate of the total B-->X_s gamma branching fraction at O(alpha_s^2) with a detailed analysis of the effects of a cut E_gamma>1.6GeV on photon energy, a prediction for the partial B-->X_s gamma branching fraction at next-to-next-to-leading order in renormalization-group improved perturbation theory is obtained, in which contributions from all relevant scales are properly factorized. The result Br(B-->X_s gamma)=(2.98+-0.26)x10^{-4} is about 1.4 sigma lower than the experimental world average. This opens a window for significant New Physics contributions in rare radiative B decays.

Threshold Resummation in Momentum Space from Effective Field Theory

Methods from soft-collinear effective theory are used to perform the threshold resummation of Sudakov logarithms for the deep-inelastic structure function F_2(x,Q^2) in the endpoint region x->1 directly in momentum space. An explicit all-order formula is derived, which expresses the short-distance coefficient function C in the convolution F_2=C*phi_q in terms of Wilson coefficients and anomalous dimensions defined in the effective theory. Contributions associated with the physical scales Q^2 and Q^2(1-x) are separated from non-perturbative hadronic physics in a transparent way. A crucial ingredient to the momentum-space resummation is the exact solution to the integro-differential evolution equation of the jet function, which is derived. The methods developed in this Letter can be applied to many other hard QCD processes.

Factorization and Momentum-Space Resummation in Deep-Inelastic Scattering

Renormalization-group methods in soft-collinear effective theory are used to perform the resummation of large perturbative logarithms for deep-inelastic scattering in the threshold region x->1. The factorization theorem for the structure function F_2(x,Q^2) for x->1 is rederived in the effective theory, whereby contributions from the hard scale Q^2 and the jet scale Q^2(1-x) are encoded in Wilson coefficients of effective-theory operators. Resummation is achieved by solving the evolution equations for these operators. Simple analytic results for the resummed expressions are obtained directly in momentum space, and are free of the Landau-pole singularities inherent to the traditional moment-space results. We show analytically that the two methods are nonetheless equivalent order by order in the perturbative expansion, and perform a numerical comparison up to next-to-next-to-leading order in renormalization-group improved perturbation theory.

Toward a NNLO calculation of the B-->X_s+gamma decay rate with a cut on photon energy: II. Two-loop result for the jet function

The complete two-loop expression for the jet function J(p^2,mu) of soft-collinear effective theory is presented, including non-logarithmic terms. Combined with our previous calculation of the soft function S(omega,mu), this result provides the basis for a calculation of the effect of a photon-energy cut in the measurement of the B-->X_s+gamma decay rate at next-to-next-to-leading order in renormalization-group improved perturbation theory. The jet function is also relevant to the resummation of Sudakov logarithms in other hard QCD processes.

Comment on form factor shape and extraction of |V_ub| from B --> pi l nu

We point out that current experimental data for partial B --> pi l nu branching fractions reduce the theoretical input required for a precise extraction of |V_ub| to the form factor normalization at a single value of the pion energy. We show that the heavy-quark expansion provides a bound on the form factor shape that is orders of magnitude more stringent than conventional unitarity bounds. We find |V_ub| = (3.7 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.1) x [0.8/F_+(16 GeV^2)]. The first error is from the experimental branching fractions, and the second is a conservative bound on the residual form factor shape uncertainty, both of which will improve with additional data. Together with current and future lattice determinations of the form factor normalization this result gives an accurate, model independent determination of |V_ub|. We further extract semileptonic shape observables such as |V_ub F_+(0)| = 0.92 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.03 and show how these observables can be used to test factorization and to determine low-energy parameters in hadronic B decays.

Toward a NNLO calculation of the B-->X_s gamma decay rate with a cut on photon energy: I. Two-loop result for the soft function

A theoretical analysis of the partial inclusive B-->X_s gamma decay rate with a cut E_gamma>E_0 on photon energy must deal with short-distance contributions associated with three different mass scales: the hard scale m_b, an intermediate scale \sqrt{m_b Delta}, and a soft scale Delta, where Delta=m_b-2E_0=1GeV for E_0=1.8GeV. The cut-dependent effects are described in terms of two perturbative objects called the jet function and the soft function, which for a next-to-next-to-leading order analysis of the decay rate are required with two-loop accuracy. The two-loop calculation of the soft function is presented here, while that of the jet function will be described in a subsequent paper. As a by-product, we rederive the two-loop anomalous-dimension kernel of the B-meson shape function.

Factorization in B->V gamma Decays

The factorization properties of the radiative decays B->V gamma are analyzed at leading order in 1/m_b using the soft-collinear effective theory. It is shown that the decay amplitudes can be expressed in terms of a B->V form factor evaluated at q^2=0, light-cone distribution amplitudes of the B and V mesons, and calculable hard-scattering kernels. The renormalization-group equations in the effective theory are solved to resum perturbative logarithms of the different scales in the decay process. Phenomenological implications for the B->K* gamma branching ratio, isospin asymmetry, and CP asymmetries are discussed, with particular emphasis on possible effects from physics beyond the Standard Model.

One-loop matching of Delta S=2 four-quark operators with improved staggered fermions

We compute O(alpha_s) lattice-to-continuum perturbative matching coefficients for the Delta S=2 flavor changing four-quark operators for the Asqtad improved staggered action. In conjunction with lattice simulations with three flavors of light, dynamical quarks, our results yield an unquenched determination of B_K, the parameter that determines the amount of indirect CP violation in the neutral kaon system. Its value is an important input for the unitarity triangle analysis of weak decays.

B-decays in the heavy-quark expansion

Progress in the theoretical description of B-meson decays, in particular decays to light hadrons, is reviewed. The factorization properties of such decays can be analyzed using the soft-collinear effective theory. Applications of the effective theory to both inclusive and exclusive decays are discussed.

Sudakov Resummation for Subleading SCET Currents and Heavy-to-Light Form Factors

The hard-scattering contributions to heavy-to-light form factors at large recoil are studied systematically in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). Large logarithms arising from multiple energy scales are resummed by matching QCD onto SCET in two stages via an intermediate effective theory. Anomalous dimensions in the intermediate theory are computed, and their form is shown to be constrained by conformal symmetry. Renormalization-group evolution equations are solved to give a complete leading-order analysis of the hard-scattering contributions, in which all single and double logarithms are resummed. In two cases, spin-symmetry relations for the soft-overlap contributions to form factors are shown not to be broken at any order in perturbation theory by hard-scattering corrections. One-loop matching calculations in the two effective theories are performed in sample cases, for which the relative importance of renormalization-group evolution and matching corrections is investigated. The asymptotic behavior of Sudakov logarithms appearing in the coefficient functions of the soft-overlap and hard-scattering contributions to form factors is analyzed.

Loop Corrections to Heavy-to-Light Form Factors and Evanescent Operators in SCET

One-loop matching corrections are calculated for Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) operators relevant to the analysis of heavy-to-light meson form factors at large recoil. The numerical impact of radiative corrections on form factor predictions is assessed. Evanescent operators in the effective theory are studied and it is shown that even in problems of the Sudakov type, these operators can be renormalized to have vanishing matrix elements.

External Operators and Anomalous Dimensions in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory

It has recently been argued that soft-collinear effective theory for processes involving both soft and collinear partons contains a new soft-collinear mode, which can communicate between the soft and collinear sectors of the theory. The formalism incorporating the corresponding fields into the effective Lagrangian is extended to include external current and four-quark operators relevant to weak interactions. An explicit calculation of the anomalous dimensions of these operators reveals that soft-collinear modes are needed for correctly describing the ultraviolet behavior of the effective theory.

Soft-Collinear Messengers: A New Mode in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory

It is argued that soft-collinear effective theory for processes involving both soft and collinear partons, such as exclusive B-meson decays, should include a new mode in addition to soft and collinear fields. These "soft-collinear messengers" can interact with both soft and collinear particles without taking them far off-shell. They thus can communicate between the soft and collinear sectors of the theory. The relevance of the new mode is demonstrated with an explicit example, and the formalism incorporating the corresponding quark and gluon fields into the effective Lagrangian is developed.

The self-energy of improved staggered quarks

We calculate the fermion self-energy at O(alpha_s) for the Symanzik improved staggered fermion action used in recent lattice simulations by the MILC collaboration. We demonstrate that the algebraic approach to lattice perturbation theory, suggested by us recently, is a powerful tool also for improved lattice actions.
