Rate-form equilibrium for an isotropic Cauchy-elastic formulation: Part I: modeling

We derive the rate-form spatial equilibrium system for a nonlinear Cauchy elastic formulation in isotropic finite-strain elasticity. For a given explicit Cauchy stress-strain constitutive equation, we determine those properties that pertain to the appearing fourth-order stiffness tensor. Notably, we show that this stiffness tensor $\mathbb{H}^{\text{ZJ}}(\sigma)$ acting on the Zaremba-Jaumann stress rate is uniformly positive definite. We suggest a mathematical treatment of the ensuing spatial PDE-system which may ultimately lead to a local existence result, to be presented in part II of this work. As a preparatory step, we show existence and uniqueness of a subproblem based on Korn's first inequality and the positive definiteness of this stiffness tensor. The procedure is not confined to Cauchy elasticity, however in the Cauchy elastic case, most theoretical statements can be made explicit. Our development suggests that looking at the rate-form equations of given Cauchy-elastic models may provide additional insight to the modeling of nonlinear isotropic elasticity. This especially concerns constitutive requirements emanating from the rate-formulation, here being reflected by the positive definiteness of $\mathbb{H}^{\text{ZJ}}(\sigma)$.

Global existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for a Willis-type model of elastodynamics

The existence and uniqueness of weak solutions is shown for a system related to the Willis model of elastodynamics. Both the whole space case and the case of a bounded smooth domain are studied. To this end the equations are reformulated as a linear symmetric hyperbolic system of first order and the existing theory for such systems is applied. If the initial and boundary data is regular enough, classical solutions are obtained. The possibility to transform the problem to a linear symmetric hyperbolic system hinges on a new symmetry condition on the Willis coupling tensor S, not yet considered in the literature. This condition demands that S is a totally symmetric third-order tensor.

Mathematical modeling of a Cosserat method in finite-strain holonomic plasticity

This article deals with the mathematical derivation and the validation over benchmark examples of a numerical method for the solution of a finite-strain holonomic (rate-independent) Cosserat plasticity problem for materials, possibly with microstructure. Two improvements are made in contrast to earlier approaches: First, the micro-rotations are parameterized with the help of an Euler-Rodrigues formula related to quaternions. Secondly, as main result, a novel two-pass preconditioning scheme for searching the energy-minimizing solutions based on the limited memory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldstein-Shanno quasi-Newton method is proposed that consists of a predictor step and a corrector-iteration. After outlining the necessary adaptations to the model, numerical simulations compare the performance and efficiency of the new and the old algorithm. The proposed numerical model can be effectively employed for studying the mechanical response of complicated materials featuring large size effects.

On a modified Becker-Doering model for two-phase materials

This work reconsiders the Becker-Doering model for nucleation under isothermal conditions in the presence of phase transitions. Based on thermodynamic principles a modified model is derived where the condensation and evaporation rates may depend on the phase parameter. The existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to the proposed model are shown and the corresponding equilibrium states are characterized in terms of response functions and constitutive variables.

On the Allen-Cahn/Cahn-Hilliard system with a geometrically linear elastic energy

We present an extension of the Allen-Cahn/Cahn-Hilliard system which incorporates a geometrically linear ansatz for the elastic energy of the precipitates. The model contains both the elastic Allen-Cahn system and the elastic Cahn-Hilliard system as special cases and accounts for the microstructures on the microscopic scale. We prove the existence of weak solutions to the new model for a general class of energy functionals. We then give several examples of functionals that belong to this class. This includes the energy of geometrically linear elastic materials for D<3. Moreover we show this for D=3 in the setting of scalar-valued deformations, which corresponds to the case of anti-plane shear. All this is based on explicit formulas for relaxed energy functionals newly derived in this article for D=1 and D=3. In these cases we can also prove uniqueness of the weak solutions.

Domain partitioning as a result of deformation in the framework of large-strain Cosserat plasticity

In the framework of the rate-independent large-strain Cosserat theory of plasticity we calculate analytically explicit solutions of a two-dimensional shear problem. We discuss two cases where the micro-rotations are stationary solutions of an Allen-Cahn equation. Thus, for a certain parameter range, patterning arises and the domain is partitioned into subsets with approximate constant rotations. This describes a possible mechanism for the formation of grains and subgrains in deformed solids.
