Enumeration of maps with the Dumitriu-Edelman model

We give an expansion in $1/N$ and $β$ of the cumulants of power sums of the particles of the $β$-ensemble. This new expansion is obtained using the tridiagonal model of Dumitriu and Edelman. The coefficients of the expansion are expressed in terms of suitably labelled maps introduced by Bouttier, Fusy, and Guitter. Our expansion is of a different nature than the one obtained by LaCroix in is study of the $b$-conjecture of Goulden and Jackson, and involves only orientable maps. We are able to relate bijectively the first two orders of our expansion to the one of LaCroix using a novel many-to-one mapping that relates suitably labelled planar maps with two minima and maps on the projective plane.

Properties of tensorial free cumulants

In the past two years, several points of view have been proposed to address the question of the generalization of the theory of free probability to random tensors with different invariances, and it is unclear at this point whether they lead to the same notions of tensorial free cumulants and freeness. One way to approach this problem, developed by Collins, Gurau and the second named author for local unitary invariant random tensors, relies on finite size quantities involving averages over the invariance group, and whose asymptotics naturally possess the properties expected for tensorial generalizations of free cumulants of arbitrary orders. At this point, this approach has only been carried out for certain distributions, and for a subset of the moments that define such theories, and a more systematic and exhaustive study is lacking. This is the program initiated in this paper: we link this approach to the one proposed by Nechita and Park; extend a number of their results as well as those of the aforementioned paper to arbitrary orders of fluctuations, thereby generalizing higher order free cumulants; push further the study of distributions with larger invariance groups; detail the link with the asymptotics of the free-energies of the tensor HCIZ and BGW integrals; and provide formulae for tensorial free cumulants of products of tensors. Another important question is that of the definition of concrete distributions whose tensorial free-cumulants take non-trivial values. We compute the tensorial free cumulants for Gaussian random tensors with non-trivial covariances, and show that they provide such examples.

Semilocalization for inhomogeneous random graphs

We analyse the eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix of a random inhomogeneous graph constructed from a specified degree sequence. We assume that the empirical degree sequence has bounded mean and variance. We show that near the edges of the spectrum, the eigenvectors are semilocalized in the sense that their mass concentrates around a small set of resonant vertices. For the extremal eigenvalues, we establish localization around a single vertex. In order to obtain effective estimates in the presence of highly inhomogeneous degrees, we introduce a new economical pruning procedure that carefully extracts a forest from the original graph, whose adjacency matrix is compared to that of the original graph using a suitably constructed local coupling to random trees with independent edges.

Topological expansion of unitary integrals and maps

In this article, we study integrals on the unitary group with respect to the Haar measure. We give a combinatorial interpretation in terms of maps of the asymptotic topological expansion, established previously by Guionnet and Novak. The maps we introduce -- the maps of unitary type -- satisfy Tutte like equations. It allows us to show that in the perturbative regime they describe the different orders of the asymptotic topological expansion. Furthermore, they generalize the monotone Hurwitz numbers.

Fay Identities of Pfaffian Type for Hyperelliptic Curves

We establish identities of Pfaffian type for the theta function associated with twice or half the period matrix of a hyperelliptic curve. They are implied by the large size asymptotic analysis of exact Pfaffian identities for expectation values of ratios of characteristic polynomials in ensembles of orthogonal or quaternionic self-dual random matrices. We show that they amount to identities for the theta function with the period matrix of a hyperelliptic curve, and in this form we reprove them by direct geometric methods.
