On the controllability in projections for linear quantum systems

We present sufficient conditions for the exact controllability in projection of the linear Schr{ö}dinger equations in the case where the spectrum of the free Hamiltonian is pure point. We consider the general case in which the Hamiltonian may be nonlinear with respect to the control. The controllability result applies, in particular, to Schr{ö}dinger equations with a polarizability term.

Small-time bilinear control of Schrödinger equations with application to rotating linear molecules

In [14] Duca and Nersesyan proved a small-time controllability property of nonlinear Schrödinger equations on a d-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^d$. In this paper we study a similar property, in the linear setting, starting from a closed Riemannian manifold. We then focus on the 2-dimensional sphere $S^2$, which models the bilinear control of a rotating linear top: as a corollary, we obtain the approximate controllability in arbitrarily small times among particular eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of $S^2$.

Single-input perturbative control of a quantum symmetric rotor

We consider the Schrödinger partial differential equation of a rotating symmetric rigid molecule (symmetric rotor) driven by a z-linearly polarized electric field, as prototype of degenerate infinite-dimensional bilinear control system. By introducing an abstract perturbative criterium, we classify its simultaneous approximate controllability; based on this insight, we numerically perform an orientational selective transfer of rotational population.

Windowed total variation denoising and noise variance monitoring

We proposed a real time Total-Variation denosing method with an automatic choice of hyper-parameter $λ$, and the good performance of this method provides a large application field. In this article, we adapt the developed method to the non stationary signal in using the sliding window, and propose a noise variance monitoring method. The simulated results show that our proposition follows well the variation of noise variance.

Revisit 1D Total Variation restoration problem with new real-time algorithms for signal and hyper-parameter estimations

1D Total Variation (TV) denoising, considering the data fidelity and the Total Variation (TV) regularization, proposes a good restored signal preserving shape edges. The main issue is how to choose the weight $λ$ balancing those two terms. In practice, this parameter is selected by assessing a list of candidates (e.g. cross validation), which is inappropriate for the real time application. In this work, we revisit 1D Total Variation restoration algorithm proposed by Tibshirani and Taylor. A heuristic method is integrated for estimating a good choice of $λ$ based on the extremums number of restored signal. We propose an offline version of restoration algorithm in O(n log n) as well as its online implementation in O(n). Combining the rapid algorithm and the automatic choice of $λ$, we propose a real-time automatic denoising algorithm, providing a large application fields. The simulations show that our proposition of $λ$ has a similar performance as the states of the art.

On the bilinear control of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

In this paper we study the bilinear-control problem for the linear and non-linear Schr{ö}dinger equation with harmonic potential. By the means of different examples, we show how space-time smoothing effects (Strichartz estimates, Kato smoothing effect) enjoyed by the linear flow, can help to prove obstructions to controllability.

Regular propagators of bilinear quantum systems

The present analysis deals with the regularity of solutions of bilinear control systems of the type $x'=(A+u(t)B)x$where the state $x$ belongs to some complex infinite dimensional Hilbert space, the (possibly unbounded) linear operators $A$ and $B$ are skew-adjoint and the control $u$ is a real valued function. Such systems arise, for instance, in quantum control with the bilinear Schrödinger equation. For the sake of the regularity analysis, we consider a more general framework where $A$ and $B$ are generators of contraction semi-groups.Under some hypotheses on the commutator of the operators $A$ and $B$, it is possible to extend the definition of solution for controls in the set of Radon measures to obtain precise a priori energy estimates on the solutions, leading to a natural extension of the celebrated noncontrollability result of Ball, Marsden, and Slemrod in 1982. Complementary material to this analysis can be found in [hal-01537743v1]

A topological obstruction to the controllability of nonlinear wave equations with bilinear control term

In this paper we prove that the Ball-Marsden-Slemrod controllability obstruction also holds for nonlinear equations, with integrable bilinear controls. We first show an abstract result and then we apply it to nonlinear wave equations. The first application to the Sine-Gordon equation directly follows from the abstract result, and the second application concerns the cubic wave/Klein-Gordon equation and needs some additional work.

Hybrid control for low-regular nonlinear systems: application to an embedded control for an electric vehicle

This note presents an embedded automatic control strategy for a low consumption vehicle equipped with an "on/off" engine. The main difficulties are the hybrid nature of the dynamics, the non smoothness of the dynamics of each mode, the uncertain environment, the fast changing dynamics, and low cost/ low consumption constraints for the control device. Human drivers of such vehicles frequently use an oscillating strategy, letting the velocity evolve between fixed lower and upper bounds. We present a general justification of this very simple and efficient strategy, that happens to be optimal for autonomous dynamics, robust and easily adaptable for real-time control strategy. Effective implementation in a competition prototype involved in low-consumption races shows that automatic velocity control achieves performances comparable with the results of trained human drivers. Major advantages of automatic control are improved robustness and safety. The total average power consumption for the control device is less than 10 mW.

Optimal Strokes for Driftless Swimmers: A General Geometric Approach

Swimming consists by definition in propelling through a fluid by means of bodily movements. Thus, from a mathematical point of view, swimming turns into a control problem for which the controls are the deformations of the swimmer. The aim of this paper is to present a unified geometric approach for the optimization of the body deformations of so-called driftless swimmers. The class of driftless swimmers includes, among other, swimmers in a 3D Stokes flow (case of micro-swimmers in viscous fluids) or swimmers in a 2D or 3D potential flow. A general framework is introduced, allowing the complete analysis of five usual nonlinear optimization problems to be carried out. The results are illustrated with examples coming from the literature and with an in-depth study of a swimmer in a 2D potential flow. Numerical tests are also provided.

On the control by electromagnetic fields of quantum systems with infinite dimensional Hilbert space

We analyze the control by electromagnetic fields of quantum systems with infinite dimensional Hilbert space and a discrete spectrum. Based on recent mathematical results, we rigorously show under which conditions such a system can be approximated in a finite dimensional Hilbert space. For a given threshold error, we estimate this finite dimension in terms of the used control field. As illustrative examples, we consider the cases of a rigid rotor and of a harmonic oscillator.

Approximate controllability of the Schrödinger Equation with a polarizability term in higher Sobolev norms

This analysis is concerned with the controllability of quantum systems in the case where the standard dipolar approximation, involving the permanent dipole moment of the system, is corrected with a polarizability term, involving the field induced dipole moment. Sufficient conditions for approximate controllability are given. For transfers between eigenstates of the free Hamiltonian, the control laws are explicitly given. The results apply also for unbounded or non-regular potentials.

Efficient finite dimensional approximations for the bilinear Schrodinger equation with bounded variation controls

This the text of a proceeding accepted for the 21st International Symposium on Mathematical Theory of Networks and Systems (MTNS 2014). We present some results of an ongoing research on the controllability problem of an abstract bilinear Schrodinger equation. We are interested by approximation of this equation by finite dimensional systems. Assuming that the uncontrolled term $A$ has a pure discrete spectrum and the control potential $B$ is in some sense regular with respect to $A$ we show that such an approximation is possible. More precisely the solutions are approximated by their projections on finite dimensional subspaces spanned by the eigenvectors of $A$. This approximation is uniform in time and in the control, if this control has bounded variation with a priori bounded total variation. Hence if these finite dimensional systems are controllable with a fixed bound on the total variation of the control then the system is approximatively controllable. The main outcome of our analysis is that we can build solutions for low regular controls such as bounded variation ones and even Radon measures.

On some open questions in bilinear quantum control

The aim of this paper is to provide a short introduction to modern issues in the control of infinite dimensional closed quantum systems, driven by the bilinear Schrödinger equation. The first part is a quick presentation of some of the numerous recent developments in the fields. This short summary is intended to demonstrate the variety of tools and approaches used by various teams in the last decade. In a second part, we present four examples of bilinear closed quantum systems. These examples were extensively studied and may be used as a convenient and efficient test bench for new conjectures. Finally, we list some open questions, both of theoretical and practical interest.

Total Variation of the Control and Energy of Bilinear Quantum Systems

In the present note, we give two examples of bilinear quantum systems showing good agreement between the total variation of the control and the variation of the energy of solutions, with bounded or unbounded coupling term. The corresponding estimates in terms of the total variation of the control appear to be optimal.

A Sufficient Condition for Partial Ensemble Controllability of Bilinear Schrödinger Equations with Bounded Coupling Terms

This note presents a sufficient condition for partial approximate ensemble controllability of a set of bilinear conservative quantum systems in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. The proof relies on classical geometric and averaging control techniques applied on finite dimensional approximation of the infinite dimensional system. The results are illustrated with the planar rotation of a linear molecule.
