Energy conservation and blowup of solutions for focusing Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchies

We consider solutions of the focusing cubic and quintic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchies. We identify an observable corresponding to the average energy per particle, and we prove that it is a conserved quantity. We prove that all solutions to the focusing GP hierarchy at the $L^2$-critical or $L^2$-supercritical level blow up in finite time if the energy per particle in the initial condition is negative. Our results do not assume any factorization of the initial data.

On the Cauchy problem for focusing and defocusing Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchies

We consider the dynamical Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchy on $\R^d$, $d\geq1$, for cubic, quintic, focusing and defocusing interactions. For both the focusing and defocusing case, and any $d\geq1$, we prove local existence and uniqueness of solutions in certain Sobolev type spaces $\cH_ξ^α$ of sequences of marginal density matrices. The regularity is accounted for by $α>\frac12& if $d=1$, $α>\frac d2-\frac{1}{2(p-1)} $ if $d\geq2$ and $(d,p)\neq(3,2)$, and $α\geq1$ if $(d,p)=(3,2)$, where $p=2$ for the cubic, and $p=4$ for the quintic GP hierarchy; the parameter $ξ>0$ is arbitrary and determines the energy scale of the problem. This result includes the proof of an a priori spacetime bound conjectured by Klainerman and Machedon for the cubic GP hierarchy in $d=3$. In the defocusing case, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions globally in time for the cubic GP hierarchy for $1\leq d\leq3$, and of the quintic GP hierarchy for $1\leq d\leq 2$, in an appropriate space of Sobolev type, and under the assumption of an a priori energy bound. For the focusing GP hierarchies, we prove lower bounds on the blowup rate. Also pseudoconformal invariance is established in the cases corresponding to $L^2$ criticality, both in the focusing and defocusing context. All of these results hold without the assumption of factorized initial conditions.

Infraparticle Scattering States in Non-Relativistic QED: II. Mass Shell Properties

We study the infrared problem in the usual model of QED with non-relativistic matter. We prove spectral and regularity properties characterizing the mass shell of an electron and one-electron infraparticle states of this model. Our results are crucial for the construction of infraparticle scattering states, which are treated in a separate paper.

Boltzmann limit and quasifreeness for a homogenous Fermi gas in a weakly disordered random medium

We discuss some basic aspects of the dynamics of a homogenous Fermi gas in a weak random potential, under negligence of the particle pair interactions. We derive the kinetic scaling limit for the momentum distribution function with a translation invariant initial state and prove that it is determined by a linear Boltzmann equation. Moreover, we prove that if the initial state is quasifree, then the time evolved state, averaged over the randomness, has a quasifree kinetic limit. We show that the momentum distributions determined by the Gibbs states of a free fermion field are stationary solutions of the linear Boltzmann equation; this includes the limit of zero temperature.

On the ground state energy of the translation invariant Pauli-Fierz model

In this note, we determine the ground state energy of the translation invariant Pauli-Fierz model to subleading order $O(α^3)$ with respect to powers of the finestructure constant $α$, and prove rigorous error bounds of order $O(α^{4})$. A main objective of our argument is its brevity.

Infrared renormalization in non-relativistic QED and scaling criticality

We consider a spin-$\frac12$ electron in a translation-invariant model of non-relativistic Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). Let $H(\vp,\sig)$ denote the fiber Hamiltonian corresponding to the conserved total momentum $\vp\in\R^3$ of the Pauli electron and the photon field, regularized by a fixed ultraviolet cutoff in the interaction term, and an infrared regularization parametrized by $0<\sig\ll1$ which we ultimately remove by taking $\sig\searrow0$. For $|\vp|<\puppbd$, all $\sig>0$, and all values of the finestructure constant $\gs<\gs_0$, with $\gs_0\ll1$ sufficiently small and {\em independent} of $\sig$, we prove the existence of a ground state eigenvalue of multiplicity two at the bottom of the essential spectrum. Moreover, we prove that the renormalized electron mass satisfies $1<m_{ren}(\vp,\sig)<1+cα$, {\em uniformly} in $\sig\geq0$, in units where the bare mass has the value 1, and we prove the existence of the renormalized mass in the limit $\sig\searrow0$. Our analysis uses the isospectral renormalization group method of Bach-Fröhlich-Sigal introduced in \cite{bfs1,bfs2} and further developed in \cite{bcfs1,bcfs2}. The limit $\sig\searrow0$ determines a scaling-critical renormalization group problem of endpoint type, in which the interaction is strictly marginal (of scale-independent size). The main achievement of this paper is the development of a method that provides rigorous control of the renormalization of a {\em strictly marginal} quantum field theory characterized by a {\em non-trivial scaling limit}.

Convergence in higher mean of a random Schroedinger to a linear Boltzmann evolution

We study the macroscopic scaling and weak coupling limit for a random Schroedinger equation on Z^3. We prove that the Wigner transforms of a large class of "macroscopic" solutions converge in r-th mean to solutions of a linear Boltzmann equation, for any finite value of r in R_+. This extends previous results where convergence in expectation was established.

Coherent infrared representations in non-relativistic QED

We consider dressed 1-electron states in a translation-invariant model of non-relativistic QED. To start with a well-defined model, the interaction Hamiltonian is cutoff at very large photon energies (ultraviolet cutoff) and regularized at very small photon energies (infrared regularization). The infrared regularization is then removed, and the representations of the canonical commutation relations of the electromagnetic field operators determined by the dressed 1-electron states are studied using operator-algebra methods. A key ingredient in our analysis is a bound on the renormalized electron mass uniform in the infrared regularization. Our results have important applications in the scattering theory for infraparticles.

Localization lengths for Schroedinger operators on Z^2 with decaying random potentials

We study a class of Schrödinger operators on $\Z^2$ with a random potential decaying as $|x|^{-\dex}$, $0<\dex\leq\frac12$, in the limit of small disorder strength $λ$. For the critical exponent $\dex=\frac12$, we prove that the localization length of eigenfunctions is bounded below by $2^{λ^{-\frac14+η}}$, while for $0<\dex<\frac12$, the lower bound is $λ^{-\frac{2-η}{1-2\dex}}$, for any $η>0$. These estimates "interpolate" between the lower bound $λ^{-2+η}$ due to recent work of Schlag-Shubin-Wolff for $\dex=0$, and pure a.c. spectrum for $\dex>\frac12$ demonstrated in recent work of Bourgain.

The Renormalized Electron Mass in Non-Relativistic Quantum Electrodynamics

This work addresses the problem of infrared mass renormalization for a scalar electron in a translation-invariant model of non-relativistic QED. We assume that the interaction of the electron with the quantized electromagnetic field comprises a fixed ultraviolet regularization and an infrared regularization parametrized by $σ>0$. For the value $p=0$ of the conserved total momentum of electron and photon field, bounds on the renormalized mass are established which are uniform in $σ\to0$, and the existence of a ground state is proved. For $|p|>0$ sufficiently small, bounds on the renormalized mass are derived for any fixed $σ>0$. A key ingredient of our proofs is the operator-theoretic renormalization group using the isospectral smooth Feshbach map. It provides an explicit, finite algorithm that determines the renormalized electron mass at $p=0$ to any given precision.

Localization Lengths and Boltzmann Limit for the Anderson Model at Small Disorders in Dimension 3

We prove lower bounds on the localization length of eigenfunctions in the three-dimensional Anderson model at weak disorders. Our results are similar to those obtained by Schlag, Shubin and Wolff for dimensions one and two. We prove that with probability one, most eigenfunctions have localization lengths bounded from below by $O(\frac{λ^{-2}}{\log\frac1λ})$, where $λ$ is the disorder strength. This is achieved by time-dependent methods which generalize those developed by Erdös and Yau to the lattice and non-Gaussian case. In addition, we show that the macroscopic limit of the corresponding lattice random Schrödinger dynamics is governed by the linear Boltzmann equations.

Critical manifolds and stability in Hamiltonian systems with non-holonomic constraints

We explore a particular approach to the analysis of dynamical and geometrical properties of autonomous, Pfaffian non-holonomic systems in classical mechanics. The method is based on the construction of a certain auxiliary constrained Hamiltonian system, which comprises the non-holonomic mechanical system as a dynamical subsystem on an invariant manifold. The embedding system possesses a completely natural structure in the context of symplectic geometry, and using it in order to understand properties of the subsystem has compelling advantages. We discuss generic geometric and topological properties of the critical sets of both embedding and physical system, using Conley-Zehnder theory and by relating the Morse-Witten complexes of the 'free' and constrained system to one another. Furthermore, we give a qualitative discussion of the stability of motion in the vicinity of the critical set. We point out key relations to sub-Riemannian geometry, and a potential computational application.

The Decay of Unstable Noncommutative Solitons

We study the classical decay of unstable scalar solitons in noncommutative field theory in 2+1 dimensions. This can, but does not have to, be viewed as a toy model for the decay of D-branes in string theory. In the limit that the noncommutativity parameter θis infinite, the gradient term is absent, there are no propagating modes and the soliton does not decay at all. If θis large, but finite, the rotationally symmetric decay channel can be described as a highly excited nonlinear oscillator weakly coupled to a continuum of linear modes. This system is closely akin to those studied in the context of discrete breathers. We here diagonalize the linear problem and compute the decay rate to first order using a version of Fermi's Golden Rule, leaving a more rigorous treatment for future work.

The increase of Binding Energy and Enhanced Binding in Non-Relativistic QED

We consider a Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian for a particle coupled to a photon field. We discuss the effects of the increase of the binding energy and enhanced binding through coupling to a photon field, and prove that both effects are the results of the existence of the ground state of the self-energy operator with total momentum $P = 0$.

Operator-theoretic infrared renormalization and construction of dressed 1-particle states in non-relativistic QED

We consider the infrared problem in a model of a freely propagating, nonrelativistic charged particle of mass 1 in interaction with the quantized electromagnetic field. The hamiltonian of the system is regularized by an infrared cutoff $\ssig\ll 1$ and an ultraviolet cutoff $Λ\sim 1$ in the interaction term, in units of the mass of the charged particle. Due to translation invariance, it suffices to study $\Hps$, the restriction of the hamiltonian to the fibre Hilbert space of the conserved momentum operator associated to total momentum $p\in\R^3$. Under the condition that the coupling constant $g$ and the conserved momentum $p$ are sufficiently small, the following statements hold: (1) For every $\ssig>0$, $E_0:=inf spec \Hps$ is an eigenvalue with corresponding eigenvector $Ω[p,\ssig]\in\Hp$. (2) For all $\ssig\geq0$, the first and second derivatives of $(\Egrd-\frac{|p|^2}{2})$ are $O(g^δ)$ for some $δ>0$. (3) $Ω[p,\ssig]$ is not an element of the Fock space $\Hp$ in the limit $\ssig\to0$, if $|p|>0$. Our proofs are based on the operator-theoretic renormalization group of V. Bach, J. Fröhlich, and I.M. Sigal. The key difficulty in the analysis of this system is connected to the strictly marginal nature of the leading interaction term, and a main issue in our exposition is to develop analytic tools to control its renormalization flow.

Non-holonomy, critical manifolds and stability in constrained Hamiltonian systems

We approach the analysis of dynamical and geometrical properties of nonholonomic mechanical systems from the discussion of a more general class of auxiliary constrained Hamiltonian systems. The latter is constructed in a manner that it comprises the mechanical system as a dynamical subsystem, which is confined to an invariant manifold. In certain aspects, the embedding system can be more easily analyzed than the mechanical system. We discuss the geometry and topology of the critical set of either system in the generic case, and prove results closely related to the strong Morse-Bott, and Conley-Zehnder inequalities. Furthermore, we consider qualitative issues about the stability of motion in the vicinity of the critical set. Relations to sub-Riemannian geometry are pointed out, and possible implications of our results for engineering problems are sketched.

Gravitational Forces with Strongly Localized Retardation

We solve the linearized Einstein equations for a specific oscillating mass distribution and discuss the usual counterarguments against the existence of observable gravitational retardations in the "near zone", where d/r << 1 (d = oscillation amplitude of the source, r = distance from the source). We show that they do not apply in the region d/r \approx 1, and prove that gravitational forces are retarded in the immediate vicinity of the source. An experiment to measure this retardation is proposed, which may provide the first direct experimental observation of propagating gravitational fields.
