Cosets from equivariant W-algebras

The equivariant $\mathcal{W}$-algebra of a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is a BRST reduction of the algebra of chiral differential operators on the Lie group of $\mathfrak{g}$. We construct a family of vertex algebras $A[\mathfrak{g}, κ, n]$ as subalgebras of the equivariant $\mathcal{W}$-algebra of $\mathfrak{g}$ tensored with the integrable affine vertex algebra $L_n(\check{\mathfrak{g}})$ of the Langlands dual Lie algebra $\check{\mathfrak{g}}$ at level $n\in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$. They are conformal extensions of the tensor product of an affine vertex algebra and the principal $\mathcal{W}$-algebra whose levels satisfy a specific relation.

Trialities of $\mathcal{W}$-algebras

We prove the conjecture of Gaiotto and Rapčák that the $Y$-algebras $Y_{L,M,N}[ψ]$ with one of the parameters $L,M,N$ zero, are simple one-parameter quotients of the universal two-parameter $\mathcal{W}_{1+\infty}$-algebra, and satisfy a symmetry known as triality. These $Y$-algebras are defined as the cosets of certain non-principal $\mathcal{W}$-algebras and $\mathcal{W}$-superalgebras by their affine vertex subalgebras, and triality is an isomorphism between three such algebras. Special cases of our result provide new and unified proofs of many theorems and open conjectures in the literature on $\mathcal{W}$-algebras of type $A$. This includes (1) Feigin-Frenkel duality, (2) the coset realization of principal $\mathcal{W}$-algebras due to Arakawa and us, (3) Feigin and Semikhatov's conjectured triality between subregular $\mathcal{W}$-algebras, principal $\mathcal{W}$-superalgebras, and affine vertex superalgebras, (4) the rationality of subregular $\mathcal{W}$-algebras due to Arakawa and van Ekeren, (5) the identification of Heisenberg cosets of subregular $\mathcal{W}$-algebras with principal rational $\mathcal{W}$-algebras that was conjectured in the physics literature over 25 years ago. Finally, we prove the conjectures of Procházka and Rapčák on the explicit truncation curves realizing the simple $Y$-algebras as $\mathcal{W}_{1+\infty}$-quotients, and on their minimal strong generating types.

FZZ-triality and large $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Liouville theory

We examine dualities of two dimensional conformal field theories by applying the methods developed in previous works. We first derive the duality between $SL(2|1)_k/(SL(2)_k \otimes U(1))$ coset and Witten's cigar model or sine-Liouville theory. The latter two models are Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov (FZZ-)dual to each other, hence the relation of the three models is named FZZ-triality. These results are used to study correlator correspondences between large $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Liouville theory and a coset of the form $Y(k_1,k_2)/SL(2)_{k_1 +k_2}$, where $Y(k_1 , k_2)$ consists of two $SL(2|1)_{k_i}$ and free bosons or equivalently two $U(1)$ cosets of $D(2,1;k_i -1)$ at level one. These correspondences are a main result of this paper. The FZZ-triality acts as a seed of the correspondence, which in particular implies a hidden $SL(2)_{k'}$ in $SL(2|1)_k$ or $D(2,1 ; k-1)_1$. The relation of levels is $k' -1 = 1/(k-1)$. We also construct boundary actions in sine-Liouville theory as another use of the FZZ-triality. Furthermore, we generalize the FZZ-triality to the case with $SL(n|1)_k/(SL(n)_k \otimes U(1))$ for arbitrary $n>2$.

Gluing vertex algebras

We relate commutative algebras in braided tensor categories to braid-reversed tensor equivalences, motivated by vertex algebra representation theory. First, for $\mathcal{C}$ a braided tensor category, we give a detailed construction of the canonical algebra in $\mathcal{C}\boxtimes\mathcal{C}^\text{rev}$: if $\mathcal{C}$ is semisimple but not necessarily finite or rigid, then $\bigoplus_{X\in\text{Irr}(\mathcal{C})}X'\boxtimes X$ is a commutative algebra, with $X'$ a representing object for $\text{Hom}_\mathcal{C}(\bullet\otimes_\mathcal{C}X,\mathbf{1}_{\mathcal{C}})$. Conversely, let $A=\bigoplus_{i\in I}U_i\boxtimes V_i$ be a simple commutative algebra in $\mathcal{U}\boxtimes\mathcal{V}$ with $\mathcal{U}$ semisimple and rigid but not necessarily finite, and $\mathcal{V}$ rigid but not necessarily semisimple. If the unit objects of $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ form a commuting pair in $A$, we show there is a braid-reversed equivalence between subcategories of $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ sending $U_i$ to $V_i^*$. When $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ are module categories for simple vertex operator algebras $U$ and $V$, we glue $U$ and $V$ along $\mathcal{U}\boxtimes\mathcal{V}$ via a map $τ:\text{Irr}(\mathcal{U})\rightarrow\text{Obj}(\mathcal{V})$ such that $τ(U)=V$ to create $A=\bigoplus_{X\in\text{Irr}(\mathcal{U})}X'\otimesτ(X)$. Thus under certain conditions, $τ$ extends to a braid-reversed equivalence between $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ if and only if $A$ is a simple conformal vertex algebra extending $U\otimes V$. As examples, we glue Kazhdan-Lusztig categories at generic levels to obtain new vertex algebras extending the tensor product of two affine vertex algebras, and we prove braid-reversed equivalences between certain module categories for affine vertex algebras and $W$-algebras at admissible levels.

A Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondence for $L_{-\frac{3}{2}}(\mathfrak{sl}_3)$

The abelian and monoidal structure of the category of smooth weight modules over a non-integrable affine vertex algebra of rank greater than one is an interesting, difficult and essentially wide open problem. Even conjectures are lacking. This work details and tests such a conjecture for $L_{-\frac{3}{2}}(\mathfrak{sl}_3)$ via a logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondence. We first investigate the representation theory of $\overline{U}^H_i(\mathfrak{sl}_3)$, the unrolled restricted quantum group of $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ at fourth root of unity. In particular, we analyse its finite-dimensional weight category, determining Loewy diagrams for all projective indecomposables and decomposing all tensor products of irreducibles. Our motivation is that this category is conjecturally braided tensor equivalent to a category of $W_{A_2}^0(2)$-modules. Here, $W_{A_2}^0(2)$ is an orbifold of the octuplet vertex algebra $W_{A_2}(2)$ of Semikhatov, the latter being the natural $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-analogue of the well known triplet algebra. Moreover, $W_{A_2}^0(2)$ is the parafermionic coset of the affine vertex algebra $L_{-\frac{3}{2}}(\mathfrak{sl}_3)$. We formulate an explicit conjecture relating the representation theory of $W_{A_2}^0(2)$ and $\overline{U}^H_i(\mathfrak{sl}_3)$ and work out the resulting structures of the corresponding $L_{-\frac{3}{2}}(\mathfrak{sl}_3)$-modules. In particular, we obtain conjectural Loewy diagrams for the latter's projective indecomposables and decompositions for the fusion products of its irreducibles. These products coincide with those recently computed via Verlinde's formula. Finally, we give analogous results for $W_{A_2}(2)$.

Correlator correspondences for Gaiotto-Rapčák dualities and first order formulation of coset models

We derive correspondences of correlation functions among dual conformal field theories in two dimensions by developing a "first order formulation" of coset models. We examine several examples, and the most fundamental one may be a conjectural equivalence between a coset $(SL(n)_k \otimes SL(n)_{-1})/SL(n)_{k-1}$ and $\mathfrak{sl}(n)$ Toda field theory with generic level $k$. Among others, we also complete the derivation of higher rank FZZ-duality involving a coset $SL(n+1)_k /(SL(n)_{k} \otimes U(1))$, which could be done only for $n=2,3$ in our previous paper. One obstacle in the previous work was our poor understanding of a first order formulation of coset models. In this paper, we establish such a formulation using the BRST formalism. With our better understanding, we successfully derive correlator correspondences of dual models including the examples mentioned above. The dualities may be regarded as conformal field theory realizations of some of the Gaiotto-Rapčák dualities of corner vertex operator algebras.

A QFT for non-semisimple TQFT

We construct a family of 3d quantum field theories $\mathcal T_{n,k}^A$ that conjecturally provide a physical realization -- and derived generalization -- of non-semisimple mathematical TQFT's based on the modules for the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_n)$ at an even root of unity $q=\text{exp}(iπ/k)$. The theories $\mathcal T_{n,k}^A$ are defined as topological twists of certain 3d $\mathcal N=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories, which also admit string/M-theory realizations. They may be thought of as $SU(n)_{k-n}$ Chern-Simons theories, coupled to a twisted $\mathcal N=4$ matter sector (the source of non-semisimplicity). We show that $\mathcal T_{n,k}^A$ admits holomorphic boundary conditions supporting two different logarithmic vertex operator algebras, one of which is an $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-type Feigin-Tipunin algebra; and we conjecture that these two vertex operator algebras are related by a novel logarithmic level-rank duality. (We perform detailed computations to support the conjecture.) We thus relate the category of line operators in $\mathcal T_{n,k}^A$ to the derived category of modules for a boundary Feigin-Tipunin algebra, and -- using a logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig-like correspondence that has been established for $n=2$ and expected for general $n$ -- to the derived category of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_n)$ modules. We analyze many other key features of $\mathcal T_{n,k}^A$ and match them from quantum-group and VOA perspectives, including deformations by flat $PSL(n,\mathbb C)$ connections, one-form symmetries, and indices of (derived) genus-$g$ state spaces.

Generalized parafermions of orthogonal type

There is an embedding of affine vertex algebras $V^k(\mathfrak{gl}_n) \hookrightarrow V^k(\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1})$, and the coset $\mathcal{C}^k(n) = \text{Com}(V^k(\mathfrak{gl}_n), V^k(\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}))$ is a natural generalization of the parafermion algebra of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. It was called the algebra of generalized parafermions by the third author and was shown to arise as a one-parameter quotient of the universal two-parameter $\mathcal{W}_{\infty}$-algebra of type $\mathcal{W}(2,3,\dots)$. In this paper, we consider an analogous structure of orthogonal type, namely $\mathcal{D}^k(n) = \text{Com}(V^k(\mathfrak{so}_{2n}), V^k(\mathfrak{so}_{2n+1}))^{\mathbb{Z}_2}$. We realize this algebra as a one-parameter quotient of the two-parameter even spin $\mathcal{W}_{\infty}$-algebra of type $\mathcal{W}(2,4,\dots)$, and we classify all coincidences between its simple quotient $\mathcal{D}_k(n)$ and the algebras $\mathcal{W}_{\ell}(\mathfrak{so}_{2m+1})$ and $\mathcal{W}_{\ell}(\mathfrak{so}_{2m})^{\mathbb{Z}_2}$. As a corollary, we show that for the admissible levels $k = -(2n-2) + \frac{1}{2} (2 n + 2 m -1)$ for $\widehat{\mathfrak{so}}_{2n}$ the simple affine algebra $L_k(\mathfrak{so}_{2n})$ embeds in $L_k(\mathfrak{so}_{2n+1})$, and the coset is strongly rational. As a consequence, the category of ordinary modules of $L_k(\mathfrak{so}_{2n+1})$ at such a level is a braided fusion category.

Relaxed and logarithmic modules of $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_3}$

In [8], the affine vertex algebra $L_k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ is realized as a subalgebra of the vertex algebra $Vir_c \otimes Π(0)$, where $Vir_c$ is a simple Virasoro vertex algebra and $Π(0)$ is a half-lattice vertex algebra. Moreover, all $L_k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$--modules (including, modules in the category $KL_k$, relaxed highest weight modules and logarithmic modules) are realized as $Vir_c \otimes Π(0)$--modules. A natural question is the generalization of this construction in higher rank. In the current paper, we study the case $\mathfrak{g}= \mathfrak{sl}_3$ and present realization of the VOA $L_k(\mathfrak g)$ for $k \notin {\mathbb Z}_{\ge 0}$ as a vertex subalgebra of $\mathcal{W}_k \otimes \mathcal S \otimes Π(0)$, where $\mathcal{W}_k$ is a simple Breshadsky Polykov vertex algebra and $\mathcal S$ is the $βγ$ vertex algebra. We use this realization to study ordinary modules, relaxed highest weight modules and logarithmic modules. We prove the irreducibility of all our relaxed highest weight modules having finite-dimensional weight spaces (whose top components are Gelfand-Tsetlin modules). The irreducibility of relaxed highest weight modules with infinite-dimensional weight spaces is proved up to a conjecture on the irreducibility of certain $\mathfrak g$--modules which are not Gelfand-Tsetlin modules. The next problem that we consider is the realization of logarithmic modules. We first analyse the free-field realization of $\mathcal{W}_k$ from [11] and obtain a realization of logarithmic modules for $\mathcal{W}_k$ of nilpotent rank two at most admissible levels. Using logarithmic modules for the $βγ$ VOA, we are able to construct logarithmic $L_k(\mathfrak g)$--modules of rank three.

Correlator correspondences for subregular $\mathcal{W}$-algebras and principal $\mathcal{W}$-superalgebras

We examine a strong/weak duality between a Heisenberg coset of a theory with $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ subregular $\mathcal{W}$-algebra symmetry and a theory with a $\mathfrak{sl}_{n|1}$-structure. In a previous work, two of the current authors provided a path integral derivation of correlator correspondences for a series of generalized Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov (FZZ-)duality. In this paper, we derive correlator correspondences in a similar way but for a different series of generalized duality. This work is a part of the project to realize the duality of corner vertex operator algebras proposed by Gaiotto and Rapčák and partly proven by Linshaw and one of us in terms of two dimensional conformal field theory. We also examine another type of duality involving an additional pair of fermions, which is a natural generalization of the fermionic FZZ-duality. The generalization should be important since a principal $\mathcal{W}$-superalgebra appears as its symmetry and the properties of the superalgebra are less understood than bosonic counterparts.

Higher Airy structures, W algebras and topological recursion

We define higher quantum Airy structures as generalizations of the Kontsevich-Soibelman quantum Airy structures by allowing differential operators of arbitrary order (instead of only quadratic). We construct many classes of examples of higher quantum Airy structures as modules of $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{g})$ algebras at self-dual level, with $\mathfrak{g}= \mathfrak{gl}_{N+1}$, $\mathfrak{so}_{2 N }$ or $\mathfrak{e}_N$. We discuss their enumerative geometric meaning in the context of (open and closed) intersection theory of the moduli space of curves and its variants. Some of these $\mathcal{W}$ constraints have already appeared in the literature, but we find many new ones. For $\mathfrak{gl}_{N+1}$ our result hinges on the description of previously unnoticed Lie subalgebras of the algebra of modes. As a consequence, we obtain a simple characterization of the spectral curves (with arbitrary ramification) for which the Bouchard-Eynard topological recursion gives symmetric $ω_{g,n}$s and is thus well defined. For all such cases, we show that the topological recursion is equivalent to $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{gl})$ constraints realized as higher quantum Airy structures, and obtain a Givental-like decomposition for the corresponding partition functions.

On ribbon categories for singlet vertex algebras

We construct two non-semisimple braided ribbon tensor categories of modules for each singlet vertex operator algebra $\mathcal{M}(p)$, $p\geq 2$. The first category consists of all finite-length $\mathcal{M}(p)$-modules with atypical composition factors, while the second is the subcategory of modules that induce to local modules for the triplet vertex operator algebra $\mathcal{W}(p)$. We show that every irreducible module has a projective cover in the second of these categories, although not in the first, and we compute all fusion products involving atypical irreducible modules and their projective covers.

Characterizing braided tensor categories associated to logarithmic vertex operator algebras

Given a non-semisimple braided tensor category, with oplax tensor functors from known braided tensor categories, we ask : How does this knowledge characterize the tensor product and the braiding? We develop tools that address this question. In particular we prove that the associator is fixed by the oplax tensor functors, and we show that a distinguished role is played by the coalgebra structure on the image of theses tensor functors. Our setup constrains the form of quasi bialgebras appearing in the logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture and it applies in particular to the representation categories of the triplet vertex algebras. Here the two oplax tensor functors are determined by two free field realizations, and the coalgebras mentioned above are the Nichols algebras of type $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. We demonstrate in the case of $p=2$ that our setup completely determines the braided tensor category and the realizing quasi-triangular quasi-Hopf algebra is as anticipated in \cite{FGR2}. This proves the logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture for $p=2$, while for general $p$ it only remains to establish that our characterization provides a unique braided tensor category.

Tensor categories for vertex operator superalgebra extensions

Let $V$ be a vertex operator algebra with a category $\mathcal{C}$ of (generalized) modules that has vertex tensor category structure, and thus braided tensor category structure, and let $A$ be a vertex operator (super)algebra extension of $V$. We employ tensor categories to study untwisted (also called local) $A$-modules in $\mathcal{C}$, using results of Huang-Kirillov-Lepowsky showing that $A$ is a (super)algebra object in $\mathcal{C}$ and that generalized $A$-modules in $\mathcal{C}$ correspond exactly to local modules for the corresponding (super)algebra object. Both categories, of local modules for a $\mathcal{C}$-algebra and (under suitable conditions) of generalized $A$-modules, have natural braided monoidal category structure, given in the first case by Pareigis and Kirillov-Ostrik and in the second case by Huang-Lepowsky-Zhang. Our main result is that the Huang-Kirillov-Lepowsky isomorphism of categories between local (super)algebra modules and extended vertex operator (super)algebra modules is also an isomorphism of braided monoidal (super)categories. Using this result, we show that induction from a suitable subcategory of $V$-modules to $A$-modules is a vertex tensor functor. We give two applications. First, we derive Verlinde formulae for regular vertex operator superalgebras and regular $(1/2)\mathbb{Z}$-graded vertex operator algebras by realizing them as (super)algebra objects in the vertex tensor categories of their even and $\mathbb{Z}$-graded components, respectively. Second, we analyze parafermionic cosets $C=\mathrm{Com}(V_L,V)$ where $L$ is a positive definite even lattice and $V$ is regular. If the category of either $V$-modules or $C$-modules is understood, then our results classify all inequivalent simple modules for the other algebra and determine their fusion rules and modular character transformations. We illustrate both directions with several examples.

Correspondences of categories for subregular W-algebras and principal W-superalgebras

Based on the Kazama-Suzuki type coset construction and its inverse coset between the subregular $\mathcal{W}$-algebras for $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ and the principal $\mathcal{W}$-superalgebras for $\mathfrak{sl}_{1|n}$, we prove weight-wise linear equivalences of their representation categories. Our main results are then improvements of these correspondences incorporating the monoidal structures. Firstly, in the rational case, we obtain the classification of simple modules and their fusion rules via simple current extensions from their Heisenberg cosets. Secondly, beyond the rational case, we use certain kernel VOAs together with relative semi-infinite cohomology functors to get functors from categories of modules for the subregular $\mathcal{W}$-algebras for $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ to categories of modules for the principal $\mathcal{W}$-superalgebras for $\mathfrak{sl}_{1|n}$ and vice versa. We study these functors and in particular prove isomorphisms between the superspaces of logarithmic intertwining operators. As a corollary, we obtain correspondences of representation categories in the monoidal sense beyond the rational case as well.

Duality of subregular W-algebras and principal W-superalgebras

We prove Feigin-Frenkel type dualities between subregular W-algebras of type A, B and principal W-superalgebras of type $\mathfrak{sl}(1|n), \mathfrak{osp}(2|2n)$. The type A case proves a conjecture of Feigin and Semikhatov. Let $(\mathfrak{g}_1,\mathfrak{g}_2) = (\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1},\mathfrak{sl}(1|n+1))$ or $(\mathfrak{so}_{2n+1}, \mathfrak{osp}(2|2n))$ and let $r$ be the lacity of $\mathfrak{g}_1$. Let k be a complex number and $\ell$ defined by $r(k+h^\vee_1)(\ell+h^\vee_2)=1$ with $h^\vee_i$ the dual Coxeter numbers of the $\mathfrak g_i$. Our first main result is that the Heisenberg cosets $\mathcal C^k(\mathfrak g_1)$ and $\mathcal C^\ell(\mathfrak g_2)$ of these W-algebras at these dual levels are isomorphic, i.e. $\mathcal C^k(\mathfrak g_1) \simeq \mathcal C^\ell(\mathfrak g_2)$ for generic k. We determine the generic levels and furthermore establish analogous results for the cosets of the simple quotients of the W-algebras. Our second result is a novel Kazama-Suzuki type coset construction: We show that a diagonal Heisenberg coset of the subregular W-algebra at level $k$ times the lattice vertex superalgebra $V_{\mathbb Z}$ is the principal W-superalgebra at the dual level $\ell$. Conversely a diagonal Heisenberg coset of the principal W-superalgebra at level $\ell$ times the lattice vertex superalgebra $V_{\sqrt{-1}\mathbb Z}$ is the subregular W-algebra at the dual level k. Again this is proven for the universal W-algebras as well as for the simple quotients. We show that a consequence of the Kazama-Suzuki type construction is that the simple principal W-superalgebra and its Heisenberg coset at level $\ell$ are rational and/or C_2-cofinite if the same is true for the simple subregular W-algebra at dual level $\ell$. This gives many new C_2-cofiniteness and rationality results.

Tensor structure on the Kazhdan-Lusztig category for affine $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$

We show that the Kazhdan-Lusztig category $KL_k$ of level-$k$ finite-length modules with highest-weight composition factors for the affine Lie superalgebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)}$ has vertex algebraic braided tensor supercategory structure, and that its full subcategory $\mathcal{O}_k^{fin}$ of objects with semisimple Cartan subalgebra actions is a tensor subcategory. We show that every simple $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)}$-module in $KL_k$ has a projective cover in $\mathcal{O}_k^{fin}$, and we determine all fusion rules involving simple and projective objects in $\mathcal{O}_k^{fin}$. Then using Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations, we prove that $KL_k$ and $\mathcal{O}_k^{fin}$ are rigid. As an application of the tensor supercategory structure on $\mathcal{O}_k^{fin}$, we study certain module categories for the affine Lie superalgebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}(2|1)}$ at levels $1$ and $-\frac{1}{2}$. In particular, we obtain a tensor category of $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}(2|1)}$-modules at level $-\frac{1}{2}$ that includes relaxed highest-weight modules and their images under spectral flow.

Tensor categories of affine Lie algebras beyond admissible levels

We show that if $V$ is a vertex operator algebra such that all the irreducible ordinary $V$-modules are $C_1$-cofinite and all the grading-restricted generalized Verma modules for $V$ are of finite length, then the category of finite length generalized $V$-modules has a braided tensor category structure. By applying the general theorem to the simple affine vertex operator algebra (resp. superalgebra) associated to a finite simple Lie algebra (resp. Lie superalgebra) $\mathfrak{g}$ at level $k$ and the category $KL_k(\mathfrak{g})$ of its finite length generalized modules, we discover several families of $KL_k(\mathfrak{g})$ at non-admissible levels $k$, having braided tensor category structures. In particular, $KL_k(\mathfrak{g})$ has a braided tensor category structure if the category of ordinary modules is semisimple or more generally if the category of ordinary modules is of finite length. We also prove the rigidity and determine the fusion rules of some categories $KL_k(\mathfrak{g})$, including the category $KL_{-1}(\mathfrak{sl}_n)$. Using these results, we construct a rigid tensor category structure on a full subcategory of $KL_1(\mathfrak{sl}(n|m))$ consisting of objects with semisimple Cartan subalgebra actions.
