QED Effects in PDFs -- A Les Houches Comparison Study

In the last decade, and even more so in the last few years, our knowledge of the internal structure of the proton has become more accurate and precise thanks to the large amount of data available and developments in theory and methodology. The reduction of the uncertainties associated to these developments has brought previously neglected effects into focus as their typical magnitude are competitive with the size of the uncertainties. One such effect is the inclusion of QED into PDF fits. Typically this is a percent effect, and thus while theoretically important, it has had a relatively limited impact on phenomenological studies up to this point. In this proceeding we study some of the effects which, while peripheral to the inclusion of QED in the proton, can considerably change the relative size and shape of the QCD+QED fit with respect to the QCD only determination. These may become important in the future as precision continues to increase. After a comparison of the QCD+QED PDFs with the QCD only PDFs of various global PDF fitting groups, we focus largely upon NNPDF4.0, which shows the biggest effect when including QED. Focusing largely on a single set of PDFs also enables more subtle effects to be analysed, making it an ideal candidate for this study.

QED-enhanced PDF implications for the Higgs sector

In this work, we examine the implications of electroweak corrections beyond leading order for processes of special interest in the Higgs sector. We especially explore the role of these corrections given the introduction of an explicit parton distribution function (PDF) for the photon in the proton, an object which emerges necessarily in global PDF fits which include QED effects (i.e., QED-enhanced PDFs). We concentrate on several representative cases, including total Higgs-production cross sections through gluon fusion, $gg \to H$, vector-boson fusion (VBFH), and associated production, $pp \to VH$; we also examine differential distributions, taking a representative Higgs-strahlung process, $pp \to W^+H$. We find that the recently developed LUX formalism for the photon PDF significantly stabilizes the PDF dependence of both QED-PDF and electroweak corrections in the Higgs sector, while leaving overall $\sim\!3\!-\!4\%$ cross-section-level variations, depending on the chosen QED-enhanced PDF. We illustrate this QED-enhanced PDF dependence by exploring predictions based upon recent analyses of the CTEQ-TEA, MSHT, and NNPDF analysis groups, fitted either at NNLO or approximate N3LO in QCD.

Theory Uncertainties in the Extraction of $\alpha_s$ from Drell-Yan at Small Transverse Momentum

We perform a detailed pseudodata study to estimate the expected theory uncertainty in the extraction of the strong coupling constant, $\alpha_s(m_Z)$, from a fit to the measured Drell-Yan transverse momentum ($q_T$) spectrum at small $q_T \ll m_Z$. We consider two approaches to estimate the dominant perturbative uncertainties. We first discuss that the traditional approach based on varying unphysical scales is insufficient here because it cannot correctly account for bin-by-bin theory correlations in the $q_T$ spectrum, which are critically important in this case. We then use this case as a nontrivial application of a new approach based on theory nuisance parameters (TNPs), which encodes the correct theory correlations by construction. Moreover, the TNPs can be profiled in the fit thereby allowing the data to constrain the theory uncertainties in a consistent manner. We furthermore discuss the interplay with nonperturbative effects in the peak region $q_T \lesssim 10$ GeV, from where most of the $\alpha_s$ sensitivity originates. The associated nonperturbative uncertainties on $\alpha_s$ when fitting only the $q_T$ spectrum are large. They can in principle be reduced by including additional constraints on the nonperturbative Collins-Soper kernel from lattice QCD calculations. We find that these improvements in the treatment of perturbative and nonperturbative uncertainties and their correlations will enable a competitive $\alpha_s$ extraction from Drell-Yan data at small $q_T$. We also discuss the implications of our findings, calling into question a recent $\alpha_s$ extraction from the $Z$ $q_T$ spectrum by the ATLAS experiment.

Combination of aN$^3$LO PDFs and implications for Higgs production cross-sections at the LHC

We discuss how the two existing approximate N$^3$LO (aN$^3$LO) sets of parton distributions (PDFs) from the MSHT20 and NNPDF4.0 series can be combined for LHC phenomenology, both in the pure QCD case and for the QCD$\otimes$QED sets that include the photon PDF. Using the resulting combinations, we present predictions for the total inclusive cross-section for Higgs production in gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production at the LHC Run-3. For the gluon fusion and vector boson fusion channels, the corrections that arise when using correctly matched aN$^3$LO PDFs with N$^3$LO cross section calculations, compared to using NNLO PDFs, are significant, in many cases larger than the PDF uncertainty, and generally larger than the differences between the two aN$^3$LO PDF sets entering the combination. The combined aN$^3$LO PDF sets, MSHT20xNNPDF40_an3lo and MSHT20xNNPDF40_an3lo_qed, are made publicly available in the LHAPDF format and can be readily used for LHC phenomenology.

Impact of Inclusive Electron Ion Collider Data on Collinear Parton Distributions

A study is presented of the impact of simulated inclusive Electron Ion Collider Deep Inelastic Scattering data on the determination of the proton and nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs) at next-to-next-to-leading and next-to-leading order in QCD, respectively. The influence on the proton PDFs is evaluated relative to the HERAPDF2.0 set, which uses inclusive HERA data only, and also relative to the global fitting approach of the MSHT20 PDFs. The impact on nuclear PDFs is assessed relative to the EPPS21 global fit and is presented in terms of nuclear modification ratios. For all cases studied, significant improvements in the PDF uncertainties are observed for several parton species. The most striking impact occurs for the nuclear PDFs in general and for the region of high Bjorken $x$ in the proton PDFs, particularly for the valence quark distributions.

Constraining the top-quark mass within the global MSHT PDF fit

We examine the ability of experimental measurements of top-quark pair production to constrain both the top-quark mass and the strong coupling within the global MSHT parton distribution function (PDF) fit. Specifically, we consider ATLAS and CMS measurements of differential distributions taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, as well as $t\bar{t}$ total cross section data taken at a variety of experiments, and compare to theoretical predictions including next-to-next-to-leading order corrections. We find that supplementing the global fit with this additional information results in relatively strong constraints on the top-quark mass, and is also able to bound the strong coupling in a limited fashion. Our final result is $m_t=173.0\pm0.6~\mathrm{GeV}$ and is compatible with the world average pole mass extracted from cross section measurements of $172.5\pm0.7~\mathrm{GeV}$ by the Particle Data Group. We also study the effect of different top-quark masses on the gluon parton distribution function, finding changes at high $x$ which nonetheless lie within the large PDF uncertainties in this region.

Quantifying the interplay of experimental constraints in analyses of parton distributions

Parton distribution functions (PDFs) play a central role in calculations for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). To gain a deeper understanding of the emergence and interplay of constraints on the PDFs in the global QCD analyses, it is important to examine the relative significance and mutual compatibility of the experimental data sets included in the PDF fits. Toward this goal, we discuss the L2 sensitivity, a convenient statistical indicator for exploring the statistical pulls of individual data sets on the best-fit PDFs and identifying tensions between competing data sets. Unlike the Lagrange Multiplier method, the L2 sensitivity can be quickly computed for a range of PDFs and momentum fractions using the published Hessian error sets. We employ the L2 sensitivity as a common metric to study the relative importance of data sets in the recent ATLAS, CTEQ-TEA, MSHT, and reduced PDF4LHC21 PDF analyses at NNLO and approximate N3LO. We illustrate how this method can aid the users of PDFs to identify data sets that are important for a PDF at a given kinematic point, to study quark flavor composition and other detailed features of the PDFs, and to compare the data pulls on the PDFs for various perturbative orders and functional forms. We also address the feasibility of computing the sensitivities using Monte Carlo error PDFs. Together with the article, we present a companion interactive website with a large collection of plotted L2 sensitivities for eight recent PDF releases.

The PDF4LHC21 combination of global PDF fits for the LHC Run III

A precise knowledge of the quark and gluon structure of the proton, encoded by the parton distribution functions (PDFs), is of paramount importance for the interpretation of high-energy processes at present and future lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron colliders. Motivated by recent progress in the PDF determinations carried out by the CT, MSHT, and NNPDF groups, we present an updated combination of global PDF fits: PDF4LHC21. It is based on the Monte Carlo combination of the CT18, MSHT20, and NNPDF3.1 sets followed by either its Hessian reduction or its replica compression. Extensive benchmark studies are carried out in order to disentangle the origin of the differences between the three global PDF sets. In particular, dedicated fits based on almost identical theory settings and input datasets are performed by the three groups, highlighting the role played by the respective fitting methodologies. We compare the new PDF4LHC21 combination with its predecessor, PDF4LHC15, demonstrating their good overall consistency and a modest reduction of PDF uncertainties for key LHC processes such as electroweak gauge boson production and Higgs boson production in gluon fusion. We study the phenomenological implications of PDF4LHC21 for a representative selection of inclusive, fiducial, and differential cross sections at the LHC. The PDF4LHC21 combination is made available via the LHAPDF library and provides a robust, user-friendly, and efficient method to estimate the PDF uncertainties associated to theoretical calculations for the upcoming Run III of the LHC and beyond.

PDF4LHC21: Update on the benchmarking of the CT, MSHT and NNPDF global PDF fits

There have been recent updates to the three global PDF fits (CT, MSHT and NNPDF), all adding large amounts of data from the LHC, and this has resulted in significant changes to the global PDFs. Given the impact that the new PDFs will have on physics comparisons at the LHC, it is crucial to perform a benchmarking among the PDFs, similar in spirit to that which was carried out for PDF4LHC15, widely used for LHC physics. In this article we detail a benchmarking comparison of three global PDF sets - CT18, MSHT20 and NNPDF3.1 - and their similarities and differences that have been observed. The end result of this study will be a new PDF4LHC21 ensemble of combined PDFs suitable for a wide range of LHC applications.

$Wγ$ production at NNLO+PS accuracy in GENEVA

We present an event generator for the process $pp\to \ellν_\ellγ$ at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD and matched to the PYTHIA8 parton shower. The calculation makes use of the GENEVA framework, which combines a resummed calculation obtained via Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) with the fixed-order result. We validate the NNLO accuracy of our results by comparing predictions for inclusive quantities with an independent fixed-order calculation, and then present the resummed 0-jettiness spectrum at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL$'$) accuracy. Finally, we compare our predictions against data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider during its 7 TeV run, finding good agreement.

reSolve - A Transverse Momentum Resummation Tool

In this note, we introduce the new tool reSolve, a Monte Carlo differential cross-section and parton-level event generator whose main purpose is to add transverse momentum resummation to a general class of inclusive processes at hadron colliders, namely all those which do not involve hadrons or jets in the measured final state. This documentation refers to the first main version release, which will form the basis for continued developments, consequently it only implements the key features of those we plan to ultimately include. This article acts as a manual for the program; describing in detail its use, structure, validation and results; whilst also highlighting key aspects of the resummation formalism applied. It details the two classes of processes so far included; these are diphoton production and Drell-Yan production. A main concept behind the development of the tool is that it is a hands-on white box for the user: significant effort has been made to give the program a modular structure, making the various parts which comprise it independent of each other as much as possible and ensuring they are transparently documented, customizable and, in principle, replaceable with something that may better serve the users needs. reSolve is a new C++ program, based on an evolution of the private Fortran code 2gres, previously used for the calculations in refs. [1] and [2]; it is also influenced by the DYRes Fortran code of refs. [3] and [4]. This initial version calculates the low transverse momentum contribution to the fully differential cross-section for two main categories of processes; the inclusive production of two photons, and inclusive Drell-Yan production. In all cases resummation up to Next-to-Next-to-Leading Logarithm (NNLL) is included. We aim to extend the program to several more processes in the near future. The program is publicly available on Github.
