A bound on the speed of sound from holography

We show that the squared speed of sound v_{s}^{2} is bounded from above at high temperatures by the conformal value of 1/3 in a class of strongly coupled four-dimensional field theories, given some mild technical assumptions. This class consists of field theories that have gravity duals sourced by a single scalar field. There are no known examples to date of field theories with gravity duals for which v_{s}^{2} exceeds 1/3 in energetically favored configurations. We conjecture that v_{s}^{2}=1/3 represents an upper bound for a broad class of four-dimensional theories.

Model Independent Tests of Skyrmions and Their Holographic Cousins

We describe a new exact relation for large $N_c$ QCD for the long-distance behavior of baryon form factors in the chiral limit. This model-independent relation is used to test the consistency of the structure of several baryon models. All 4D semiclassical chiral soliton models satisfy the relation, as does the Pomarol-Wulzer holographic model of baryons as 5D Skyrmions. However, remarkably, we find that the holographic model treating baryons as instantons in the Sakai-Sugimoto model does not satisfy the relation.

Magnetization of the QCD vacuum at large fields

The response of the QCD vacuum to very large static external magnetic fields (q B >> Lambda_QCD^2) is studied. In this regime, the magnetization of the QCD vacuum is naturally described via perturbative QCD. Combining pQCD and the Schwinger proper time formalism, we calculate the magnetization of the QCD vacuum due to a strong magnetic field at leading order (one-loop) to be proportional to B log B. We show that the leading perturbative correction (two-loop) vanishes.

The Schwinger mechanism and graphene

The Schwinger mechanism, the production of charged particle-antiparticle pairs in a macroscopic external electric field, is derived for 2+1 dimensional theories. The rate of pair production per unit area for four species of massless fermions, with charge $q$, in a constant electric field $E$ is given by $ π^{-2} \hbar^{-3/2} \tilde{c}^{-1/2} (q E)^{3/2} $ where $\tilde{c}$ is the speed of light for the two-dimensional system. To the extent undoped graphene behaves like the quantum field-theoretic vacuum for massless fermions in 2+1 dimensions, the Schwinger mechanism should be testable experimentally. A possible experimental configuration for this is proposed. Effects due to deviations from this idealized picture of graphene are briefly considered. It is argued that with present day samples of graphene, tests of the Schwinger formula may be possible.

The Schwinger mechanism revisited

The vacuum persistence probability, $P_{vac}(t)$, for a system of charged fermions in a fixed, external, and spatially homogeneous electric field, was derived long ago by Schwinger; $w = -log[P_{vac}(t)]/ (V t)$ has often been identified as the rate at which fermion-antifermion pairs are produced per unit volume due to the electric field. In this paper, we separately compute exact expressions for both $w$ and for the rate of fermion-antifermion pair production per unit volume, $Γ$, and show that they differ. While $w$ is given by the standard Schwinger mechanism result $w$, an infinite series, the pair production rate, $Γ$, is just the first term of that series. Our calculation is done for a system with periodic boundary conditions in the $A_0=0$ gauge but the result should hold for any consistent set of boundary conditions. We discuss, the physical reason why the rates $w$ and $Γ$ differ.

Challenges facing holographic models of QCD

This paper, written in memory of Manoj Banerjee, takes a critical look at holographic models of QCD focusing on ``practical'' models in which the five dimensional theory is treated classically. A number of theoretical and phenomenological challenges to the approach are discussed.

On Skyrmion semiclassical quantization in the presence of an isospin chemical potential

The semiclassical description of Skyrmions at small isospin chemical potential $μ_I$ is carefully analyzed. We show that when the calculation of the energy of a nucleon is performed using the straightforward generalization of the vacuum sector techniques ($μ_I=0$), together with the "natural" assumption $μ_I = {\cal O} (N_c^0)$, the proton and neutron masses are nonlinear in $μ_I$ in the regime $|μ_I| < m_π$. Although these nonlinearities turn out to be numerically quite small, such a result fails to strictly agree with the very robust prediction that for those values of $\mui$ the energy excitations above the vacuum are linear in $μ_I$. The resolution of this paradox is achieved by studying the realization of the large $N_c$ limit of $QCD$ in the Skyrme model at finite $\mui$. This is done in a simplified context devoid of the technical complications present in the Skyrme model but which fully displays the general scaling behavior with $N_c$. The analysis shows that the paradoxical result appears as a symptom of using the semi-classical approach beyond its regime of validity and that, at a formal level, the standard methods for dealing with the Skyrme model are only strictly justified for states of high isospin $I \sim N_c$.

A sticky business: the status of the conjectured viscosity/entropy density bound

There have been a number of forms of a conjecture that there is a universal lower bound on the ratio, eta/s, of the shear viscosity, eta, to entropy density, s, with several different domains of validity. We examine the various forms of the conjecture. We argue that a number of variants of the conjecture are not viable due to the existence of theoretically consistent counterexamples. We also note that much of the evidence in favor of a bound does not apply to the variants which have not yet been ruled out.

The chiral condensate in a constant electromagnetic field

We study the shift of the chiral condensate in a constant electromagnetic field in the context of chiral perturbation theory. Using the Schwinger proper-time formalism, we derive a one-loop expression correct to all orders in $m_π^2 / eH$. Our result correctly reproduces a previously derived ``low-energy theorem'' for $m_π= 0$. We show that it is essential to include corrections due to non-vanishing $m_π$ in order for a low energy theorem to have any approximate regime of validity in the physical universe. We generalize these results to systems containing electric fields, and discuss the regime of validity for the results. In particular, we discuss the circumstances in which the method formally breaks down due to pair creation in an electric field.

Meson coupling constants at high mass and large N_c

Quark-hadron duality implies that a process described in terms of quark loops should be the hadronic amplitude when averaged over a sufficient number of states. Ambiguities associated with the notion of quark hadron duality can be made arbitrarily small for highly excited mesons at large $N_c$. QCD is expected to form a string like description at large $N_c$ yielding an exponentially increasing Hagedorn spectrum for high mass. It is shown that in order to reconcile quantum-hadron duality with a Hagedorn spectrum, the magnitude of individual coupling constants between high-lying mesons in a typical decay process must be characteristically larger than the average of the coupling constants to mesons with nearby masses. The ratio of the square of the average coupling to the average of the coupling squared (where the average is over mesons with nearby masses) drops {\it exponentially} with the mass of the meson. Scenarios are discussed by which such a high precision cancellation can occur.

Heavy baryons in the Skyrme model: the role of highly anharmonic collective motion

In the heavy quark and large Nc limits, ordinary (exotic) heavy baryons can be considered as bound states of heavy mesons (anti-mesons)and chiral solitons. In these limits, the heavy mesons (or anti-mesons) and the chiral solitons are extremely heavy and are presumed to fall to the bottom of the effective potential. Previous studies have approximated the effective potential as harmonic about the minimum. However, when realistic masses for the heavy meson and chiral soliton are considered, longer range parts of the effective potential can become relevant. In this paper, we show that these longer-ranged effects yield effective wave functions which are qualitatively very different from those expected from the combined large Nc and heavy quark limits. These potentials can support bound heavy pentaquarks under some conditions. The consequence of these new energy states and wave functions on the Isgur-Wise function for the semileptonic decay of heavy baryons is also considered.

Is there a "most perfect fluid" consistent with quantum field theory?

It was recently conjectured that the ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density, $ η/ s$, for any fluid always exceeds $\hbar/(4 πk_B)$. This conjecture was motivated by quantum field theoretic results obtained via the AdS/CFT correspondence and from empirical data with real fluids. A theoretical counterexample to this bound can be constructed from a nonrelativistic gas by increasing the number of species in the fluid while keeping the dynamics essentially independent of the species type. The question of whether the underlying structure of relativistic quantum field theory generically inhibits the realization of such a system and thereby preserves the possibility of a universal bound is considered here. Using rather conservative assumptions, it is shown here that a metastable gas of heavy mesons in a particular controlled regime of QCD provides a realization of the counterexample and is consistent with a well-defined underlying relativistic quantum field theory. Thus, quantum field theory appears to impose no lower bound on $η/s$, at least for metastable fluids.

Strange results from chiral soliton models

The standard collective quantization treatment of the strangeness content of the nucleon in chiral soliton models such as the Skyrmion is shown to be inconsistent with the semi-classical expansion on which the treatment is based. The strangeness content vanishes at leading order in the semi-classical expansion. Collective quantization correctly describes some contributions to the strangeness content at the first nonvanishing order in the expansion, but neglects others at the same order--namely, those associated with continuum modes. Moreover, there are fundamental difficulties in computing at a constant order in the expansion due to the non-renormalizable nature of chiral soliton models. Moreover, there are fundamental difficulties in computing at a constant order in the expansion due to the non-renormalizable nature of chiral soliton models and the absence of any viable power counting scheme. We show that the continuum mode contribution to the strangeness diverges, and as a result the computation of the strangeness content at leading non-vanishing order is not a well-posed mathematical problem in these models.

Doubly heavy hadrons and the domain of validity of doubly heavy diquark--anti-quark symmetry

In the limit of heavy quark masses going to infinity, a symmetry is known to emerge in QCD relating properties of hadrons with two heavy quarks to analogous states with one heavy anti-quark. A key question is whether the charm mass is heavy enough so that this symmetry is manifest in at least an approximate manner. The issue is crucial in attempting to understand the recent reports by the SELEX Collaboration of doubly charmed baryons. We argue on very general grounds that the charm quark mass is substantially too light for the symmetry to emerge automatically via colour coulombic interactions. However, the symmetry could emerge approximately depending on the dynamical details.

A new class of quantum bound states: diprotons in extreme magnetic fields

This paper considers the possibility that two charged particles with an attractive short-ranged potential between them which is not strong enough to form bound states in free space, may bind in uniform magnetic fields. It is shown that in the formal limit where Coulomb repulsion is negligible (q -> 0 and B_0 -> \infty with q B_0 fixed where q is the charge and B_0 the field strength) there always exists a bound state for a system of two identical charged particles in a constant magnetic field, provided that there is a short-range uniformly attractive potential between them. Moreover, it is shown that in this limit {\it any} potential with an attractive s-wave scattering length will posses bound states provided that the range of the potential is much smaller than the characteristic magnetic length, r_0 = (\frac{q B_0}{4})^{-1/2}. For this case, the binding is computed numerically. We estimate the size of the magnetic field needed to approximately reach a regime where the formal limit considered becomes a good approximation to the dynamics. These numerical estimates indicate that two protons in an extremely strong magnetic field such as might be found in a magnetar will bind to form a diproton.

QCD strings and the thermodynamics of the metastable phase of QCD at large $N_c$

The thermodyanmics of a metastable hadronic phase of QCD at large $N_C$ are related to properties of an effective QCD string. In particular, it is shown that in the large $N_c$ limit and near the maximum hadronic temperature, $T_H$, the energy density and pressure of the metastable phase scale as ${\cal E} \sim (T_H-T)^{-(D_\perp-6)/2}$ (for $D_\perp <6$) and $P \sim (T_H-T)^{-(D_\perp-4)/2}$ (for $D_\perp <4$) where $D_\perp$ is the effective number of transverse dimensions of the string theory. It is shown, however, that for the thermodynamic quantities of interest the limits $T \to T_H$ and $N_c \to \infty$ do not commute. The prospect of extracting $D_\perp$ via lattice simulations of the metastable hadronic phase at moderately large $N_c$ is discussed.

A simple toy model for effective restoration of chiral symmetry in excited hadrons

A simple solvable toy model exhibiting effective restoration of chiral symmetry in excited hadrons is constructed. A salient feature is that while physics of the low-lying states is crucially determined by the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry, in the high-lying states the effects of chiral symmetry breaking represent only a small correction. Asymptotically the states approach the regime where their properties are determined by the underlying unbroken chiral symmetry.
