Pure density functional for strong correlations and the thermodynamic limit from machine learning

We use density-matrix renormalization group, applied to a one-dimensional model of continuum Hamiltonians, to accurately solve chains of hydrogen atoms of various separations and numbers of atoms. We train and test a machine-learned approximation to $F[n]$, the universal part of the electronic density functional, to within quantum chemical accuracy. Our calculation (a) bypasses the standard Kohn-Sham approach, avoiding the need to find orbitals, (b) includes the strong correlation of highly-stretched bonds without any specific difficulty (unlike all standard DFT approximations) and (c) is so accurate that it can be used to find the energy in the thermodynamic limit to quantum chemical accuracy.

Classification of magnetic inhomogeneities and $0-π$ transitions in superconducting-magnetic hybrid structures

We present a comparative study of pair correlations and currents through superconducting-magnetic hybrid systems with a particular emphasis on the tunable Bloch domain wall of an exchange spring. This study of the Gor'kov functions contrasts magnetic systems with domain walls that change at discrete points in the magnetic region with those that change continuously throughout. We present results for misaligned homogeneous magnetic multilayers, including spin valves, for discrete domain walls, as well as exchange springs and helical domain walls --such as Holmium-- for the continuous case. Introducing a rotating basis to disentangle the role of singlet and triplet correlations, we demonstrate that substantial amounts of (so-called short range) singlet correlations are generated throughout the magnetic system in a continuous domain wall via the cascade effect. We propose a classification of $0-π$ transitions of the Josephson current into three types, according to the predominant pair correlations symmetries involved in the current. Properties of exchange springs for an experimental study of the proposed effects are discussed. The interplay between components of the Gor'kov function that are parallel and perpendicular to the local magnetization lead to a novel prediction about their role in a proximity system with a progressively twisting helix that is experimentally measurable.

One Dimensional Mimicking of Electronic Structure: The Case for Exponentials

An exponential interaction is constructed so that one-dimensional atoms and chains of atoms mimic the general behavior of their three-dimensional counterparts. Relative to the more commonly used soft-Coulomb interaction, the exponential greatly diminishes the computational time needed for calculating highly accurate quantities with the density matrix renormalization group. This is due to the use of a small matrix product operator and to exponentially vanishing tails. Furthermore, its more rapid decay closely mimics the screened Coulomb interaction in three dimensions. Choosing parameters to best match earlier calculations, we report results for the one dimensional hydrogen atom, uniform gas, and small atoms and molecules both exactly and in the local density approximation.

Reproducing sterile neutrinos and the behavior of flavor oscillations with superconducting-magnetic proximity effects

The physics of a superconductor subjected to a magnetic field is known to be equivalent to neutrino oscillations. Examining the properties of singlet-triplet oscillations in the magnetic field, a sterile neutrino--shown to be a Majorana fermion--is suggested to be represented by singlet Cooper pairs and moderates flavor oscillations between three flavor neutrinos (triplet Cooper pairs). A superconductor-exchange spring system's rotating magnetization profile is used to simulate the mass-flavor oscillations in the neutrino case and the physics of neutrino oscillations are discussed. Symmetry protected triplet components are presented as weak process states. Phases acquired due to the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov effect produce a complex phase that may be responsible for charge-parity violation in flavor oscillations.

Kohn-Sham calculations with the exact functional

As a proof of principle, self-consistent Kohn--Sham calculations are performed with the exact exchange-correlation functional. Finding the exact functional for even one trial density requires solving the interacting Schrödinger equation many times. The density matrix renormalization group method makes this possible for one-dimensional, real-space systems of more than two interacting electrons. We illustrate and explore the convergence properties of the exact KS scheme for both weakly and strongly correlated systems. We also explore the spin-dependent generalization and densities for which the functional is ill defined.

Cascading Proximity Effects in Rotating Magnetizations

We demonstrate two effects that occur in all diffusive superconducting-magnetic heterostructures with rotating magnetization: the reappearance of singlet $|0,0>$ correlations deep in the magnetic material and a cascade of $s=1$, $m=0, \pm 1$ components (in the two spin-$1/2$ basis $|s,m>$). We do so by examining the order parameter and Josephson current through a multilayer with five mutually perpendicular ferromagnets. The properties of the middle layer determine whether the current is due to $m=0$ or $m\neq 0$ contributions. We conclude that so-called long- and short-range components are present across a proximity system with rotating magnetization.

Long Range Triplet Josephson Current and $0-π$ Transition in Tunable Domain Walls

The order parameter of superconducting pairs penetrating an inhomogeneous magnetic material can acquire a long range triplet component (LRTC) with non-zero spin projection. This state has been predicted and generated recently in proximity systems and Josephson junctions. We show using an analytically derived domain wall of an exchange spring how the LRTC emerges and can be tuned with the twisting of the magnetization. We also introduce a new kind of Josephson current reversal, the triplet $0-π$ transition, that can be observed in one and the same system either by tuning the domain wall or by varying temperature.

Jacobi Elliptic Functions and the Complete Solution to the Bead on the Hoop Problem

Jacobi elliptic functions are flexible functions that appear in a variety of problems in physics and engineering. We introduce and describe important features of these functions and present a physical example from classical mechanics where they appear: a bead on a spinning hoop. We determine the complete analytical solution for the motion of a bead on the driven hoop for arbitrary initial conditions and parameter values.
