Fast WDM provisioning with minimal probing: the first field experiments for DC exchanges

We propose an approach to estimate the end-to-end GSNR accurately in a short time when a data center interconnect (DCI) network operator receives a service request from users, not by measuring the GSNR at the operational route and wavelength for the End-End optical path but by simply applying a QoT probe channel link by link, at a convenient wavelength/modulation-format for measurement. Assuming connections between coherent transceivers of various frequency ranges, modulators, and modulation formats, we propose a new device software architecture in which the DCI network operator optimizes the transmission mode between user transceivers with high accuracy using only standard parameters such as Bit Error Rate. In this paper, we first experimentally built three different routes of 32 km/72 km/122 km in the C-band to confirm the accuracy of this approach. For the operational end-to-end GSNR measurements, the accuracy estimated from the sum of the measurements for each link was 0.6 dB, and the wavelength-dependent error was about 0.2 dB. Then, using field fibers deployed in the NSF COSMOS testbed (deployed in an urban area), a Linux-based transmission device software architecture, and coherent transceivers with different optical frequency ranges, modulators, and modulation formats, the fast WDM provisioning of an optical path was completed within 6 minutes (with a Q-factor error of about 0.7 dB).

Silicon microring synapses enable photonic deep learning beyond 9-bit precision

Deep neural networks (DNN) consist of layers of neurons interconnected by synaptic weights. A high bit-precision in weights is generally required to guarantee high accuracy in many applications. Minimizing error accumulation between layers is also essential when building large-scale networks. Recent demonstrations of photonic neural networks are limited in bit-precision due to crosstalk and the high sensitivity of optical components (e.g., resonators). Here, we experimentally demonstrate a record-high precision of 9 bits with a dithering control scheme for photonic synapses. We then numerically simulated the impact with increased synaptic precision on a wireless signal classification application. This work could help realize the potential of photonic neural networks for many practical, real-world tasks.

Emerging Devices and Packaging Strategies for Electronic-Photonic AI Accelerators

The field of mimicking the structure of the brain on a chip is experiencing interest driven by the demand for machine intelligent applications. However, the power consumption and available performance of machine-learning (ML) accelerating hardware still leave much desire for improvement. In this letter, we share viewpoints, challenges, and prospects of electronic-photonic neural network (NN) accelerators. Combining electronics with photonics offers synergistic co-design strategies for high-performance AI Application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and systems. Taking advantages of photonic signal processing capabilities and combining them with electronic logic control and data storage is an emerging prospect. However, the optical component library leaves much to be desired and is challenged by the enormous size of photonic devices. Within this context, we will review the emerging electro-optic materials, functional devices, and systems packaging strategies that, when realized, provide significant performance gains and fuel the ongoing AI revolution, leading to a stand-alone photonics-inside AI ASIC 'black-box' for streamlined plug-and-play board integration in future AI processors.
