Operational islands and black hole dissipation in JT gravity

In this work, we revisit the problem of finding entanglement islands in 2d Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. We implement the following adjustments to the traditional setup: (1) we do not explicitly couple to a non-gravitating system, instead we implement only pure absorption into a fiducial detector, (2) we utilise the operationally defined renormalised matter entanglement entropy, as defined by the boundary observer's wordline. We show that this leads to a unitary Page curve that we explicitly compute, with an island outside of the event horizon. Next, we extend the analysis to a charged and/or supersymmetric black hole. We find that in a certain regime the charged black hole grows first as it emits superradiation before eventually dissipating. We obtain similar results when embedding the system in a supersymmetric setting.

From Quantum Groups to Liouville and Dilaton Quantum Gravity

We investigate the underlying quantum group symmetry of 2d Liouville and dilaton gravity models, both consolidating known results and extending them to the cases with $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetry. We first calculate the mixed parabolic representation matrix element (or Whittaker function) of $\text{U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb{R}))$ and review its applications to Liouville gravity. We then derive the corresponding matrix element for $\text{U}_q(\mathfrak{osp}(1|2, \mathbb{R}))$ and apply it to explain structural features of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ Liouville supergravity. We show that this matrix element has the following properties: (1) its $q\to 1$ limit is the classical $\text{OSp}^+(1|2, \mathbb{R})$ Whittaker function, (2) it yields the Plancherel measure as the density of black hole states in $\mathcal{N} = 1$ Liouville supergravity, and (3) it leads to $3j$-symbols that match with the coupling of boundary vertex operators to the gravitational states as appropriate for $\mathcal{N} = 1$ Liouville supergravity. This object should likewise be of interest in the context of integrability of supersymmetric relativistic Toda chains. We furthermore relate Liouville (super)gravity to dilaton (super)gravity with a hyperbolic sine (pre)potential. We do so by showing that the quantization of the target space Poisson structure in the (graded) Poisson sigma model description leads directly to the quantum group $\text{U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb{R}))$ or the quantum supergroup $\text{U}_q(\mathfrak{osp}(1|2, \mathbb{R}))$.

Supergroup Structure of Jackiw-Teitelboim Supergravity

We develop the gauge theory formulation of $\mathcal{N}=1$ Jackiw-Teitelboim supergravity in terms of the underlying $\text{OSp}(1|2, \mathbb{R})$ supergroup, focusing on boundary dynamics and the exact structure of gravitational amplitudes. We prove that the BF description reduces to a super-Schwarzian quantum mechanics on the holographic boundary, where boundary-anchored Wilson lines map to bilocal operators in the super-Schwarzian theory. A classification of defects in terms of monodromies of $\text{OSp}(1|2, \mathbb{R})$ is carried out and interpreted in terms of character insertions in the bulk. From a mathematical perspective, we construct the principal series representations of $\text{OSp}(1|2, \mathbb{R})$ and show that whereas the corresponding Plancherel measure does not match the density of states of $\mathcal{N}=1$ JT supergravity, a restriction to the positive subsemigroup $\text{OSp}^+(1|2, \mathbb{R})$ yields the correct density of states, mirroring the analogous results for bosonic JT gravity. We illustrate these results with several gravitational applications, in particular computing the late-time complexity growth in JT supergravity.

Degenerate operators in JT and Liouville (super)gravity

We derive explicit expressions for a specific subclass of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity bilocal correlators, corresponding to degenerate Virasoro representations. On the disk, these degenerate correlators are structurally simple, and they allow us to shed light on the 1/C Schwarzian bilocal perturbation series. In particular, we prove that the series is asymptotic for generic weight $h\notin - \mathbb{N}/2$. Inspired by its minimal string ancestor, we propose an expression for higher genus corrections to the degenerate correlators. We discuss the extension to the $\mathcal{N}=1$ super JT model. On the disk, we similarly derive properties of the 1/C super-Schwarzian perturbation series, which we independently develop as well. As a byproduct, it is shown that JT supergravity saturates the chaos bound $λ_L = 2π/β$ at first order in 1/C. We develop the fixed-length amplitudes of Liouville supergravity at the level of the disk partition function, the bulk one-point function and the boundary two-point functions. In particular we compute the minimal superstring fixed length boundary two-point functions, which limit to the super JT degenerate correlators. We give some comments on higher topology at the end.

Eigenbranes in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity

It was proven recently that JT gravity can be defined as an ensemble of L x L Hermitian matrices. We point out that the eigenvalues of the matrix correspond in JT gravity to FZZT-type boundaries on which spacetimes can end. We then investigate an ensemble of matrices with 1<<N<<L eigenvalues held fixed. This corresponds to a version of JT gravity which includes N FZZT type boundaries in the path integral contour and which is found to emulate a discrete quantum chaotic system. In particular this version of JT gravity can capture the behavior of finite-volume holographic correlators at late times, including erratic oscillations.

Unruh detectors and quantum chaos in JT gravity

We identify the spectral properties of Hawking-Unruh radiation in the eternal black hole at ultra low energies as a probe for the chaotic level statistics of quantum black holes. Level repulsion implies that there are barely Hawking particles with an energy smaller than the level separation. This effect is experimentally accessible by probing the Unruh heat bath with a linear detector. We provide evidence for this effect via explicit and exact calculations in JT gravity building on a radar definition of bulk observables in the model. Similar results are observed for the bath energy density. This universal feature of eternal Hawking radiation should resonate into the evaporating setup.

Towards Black Hole Evaporation in Jackiw-Teitelboim Gravity

Using a definition of the bulk frame within 2d Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, we go into the bulk from the Schwarzian boundary. Including the path integral over the Schwarzian degrees of freedom, we discuss the quantum gravitational Unruh effect and the Planckian black-body spectrum of the thermal atmosphere. We analyze matter entanglement entropy and how the entangling surface should be defined in quantum gravity. Finally, we reanalyze a semi-classical model for black hole evaporation studied in JHEP 1607, 139 (2016) and compute the entanglement between early and late Hawking radiation, illustrating information loss in the semi-classical framework.

Fine Structure of Jackiw-Teitelboim Quantum Gravity

We investigate structural aspects of JT gravity through its BF description. In particular, we provide evidence that JT gravity should be thought of as (a coset of) the noncompact subsemigroup SL$^+$(2,R) BF theory. We highlight physical implications, including the famous sinh Plancherel measure. Exploiting this perspective, we investigate JT gravity on more generic manifolds with emphasis on the edge degrees of freedom on entangling surfaces and factorization. It is found that the one-sided JT gravity degrees of freedom are described not just by a Schwarzian on the asymptotic boundary, but also include frozen SL$^+$(2,R) degrees of freedom on the horizon, identifiable as JT gravity black hole states. Configurations with two asymptotic boundaries are linked to 2d Liouville CFT on the torus surface.

Clocks and Rods in Jackiw-Teitelboim Quantum Gravity

We specify bulk coordinates in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity using a boundary-intrinsic radar definition. This allows us to study and calculate exactly diff-invariant bulk correlation functions of matter-coupled JT gravity, which are found to satisfy microcausality. We observe that quantum gravity effects dominate near-horizon matter correlation functions. This shows that quantum matter in classical curved spacetime is not a sensible model for near-horizon matter-coupled JT gravity. This is how JT gravity, given our choice of bulk frame, evades an information paradox. This echoes into the quantum expectation value of the near-horizon metric, whose analysis is extended from the disk model to the recently proposed topological completion of JT gravity. Due to quantum effects, at distances of order the Planck length to the horizon, a dramatic breakdown of Rindler geometry is observed.

Defects in Jackiw-Teitelboim Quantum Gravity

We classify and study defects in 2d Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. We show these are holographically described by a deformation of the Schwarzian theory where the reparametrization mode is integrated over different coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro group. We show that the quantization of each coadjoint orbit is connected to 2d Liouville CFT between branes with insertions of Verlinde loop operators. We also propose an interpretation for the exceptional orbits. We use this perspective to solve these deformations of the Schwarzian theory, computing their partition function and correlators. In the process, we define two geometric observables: the horizon area operator $Φ_h$ and the geodesic length operator $L(γ)$. We show this procedure is structurally related to the deformation of the particle-on-a-group quantum mechanics by the addition of a chemical potential. As an example, we solve the low-energy theory of complex SYK with a U(1) symmetry and generalize to the non-abelian case.

The Schwarzian Theory - A Wilson Line Perspective

We provide a holographic perspective on correlation functions in Schwarzian quantum mechanics, as boundary-anchored Wilson line correlators in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. We first study compact groups and identify the diagrammatic representation of bilocal correlators of the particle-on-a-group model as Wilson line correlators in its 2d holographic BF description. We generalize to the Hamiltonian reduction of SL(2,R) and derive the Schwarzian correlation functions. Out-of-time ordered correlators are determined by crossing Wilson lines, giving a 6j-symbol, in agreement with 2d CFT results.

Shockwave S-matrix from Schwarzian Quantum Mechanics

Schwarzian quantum mechanics describes the collective IR mode of the SYK model and captures key features of 2D black hole dynamics. Exact results for its correlation functions were obtained in JHEP {\bf 1708}, 136 (2017) [arXiv:1705.08408]. We compare these results with bulk gravity expectations. We find that the semi-classical limit of the out-of-time-order (OTO) four-point function exactly matches with the scattering amplitude obtained from the Dray-'t Hooft shockwave $\mathcal{S}$-matrix. We show that the two point function of heavy operators reduces to the semi-classical saddle-point of the Schwarzian action. We also explain a previously noted match between the OTO four point functions and 2D conformal blocks. Generalizations to higher-point functions, and applications, are discussed.

Edge Dynamics from the Path Integral: Maxwell and Yang-Mills

We derive an action describing edge dynamics on interfaces for gauge theories (Maxwell and Yang-Mills) using the path integral. The canonical structure of the edge theory is deduced and the thermal partition function calculated. We test the edge action in several applications. For Maxwell in Rindler space, we recover earlier results, now embedded in a dynamical canonical framework. A second application is 2d Yang-Mills theory where the boundary action becomes just the particle-on-a-group action. Correlators of boundary-anchored Wilson lines in 2d Yang-Mills are matched with, and identified as correlators of bilocal operators in the particle-on-a-group edge model.

Edge State Quantization: Vector Fields in Rindler

We present a detailed discussion of the entanglement structure of vector fields through canonical quantization. We quantize Maxwell theory in Rindler space in Lorenz gauge, discuss the Hilbert space structure and analyze the Unruh effect. As a warm-up, in 1+1 dimensions, we compute the spectrum and prove that the theory is thermodynamically trivial. In d+1 dimensions, we identify the edge sector as eigenstates of horizon electric flux or equivalently as states representing large gauge transformations, localized on the horizon. The edge Hilbert space is generated by inserting a generic combination of Wilson line punctures in the edge vacuum, and the edge states are identified as Maxwell microstates of the black hole. This construction is repeated for Proca theory. Extensions to tensor field theories, and the link with Chern-Simons are discussed.

The Schwarzian Theory - Origins

In this paper we further study the 1d Schwarzian theory, the universal low-energy limit of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models, using the link with 2d Liouville theory. We provide a path-integral derivation of the structural link between both theories, and study the relation between 3d gravity, 2d Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, 2d Liouville and the 1d Schwarzian. We then generalize the Schwarzian double-scaling limit to rational models, relevant for SYK-type models with internal symmetries. We identify the holographic gauge theory as a 2d BF theory and compute correlators of the holographically dual 1d particle-on-a-group action, decomposing these into diagrammatic building blocks, in a manner very similar to the Schwarzian theory.

Holographic estimate of heavy quark diffusion in a magnetic field

We study the influence of a background magnetic field on the $J/ψ$ vector meson in a DBI-extension of the soft wall model, building upon our earlier work Phys. Rev. D91, 086002 (2015). In this specific holographic QCD model, we discuss the heavy quark number susceptibility and diffusion constants of charm quarks and their dependence on the magnetic field by either a hydrodynamic expansion or by numerically solving the differential equation. This allows us to determine the response of these transport coefficients to the magnetic field. The effects of the latter are considered both from a direct as indirect (medium) viewpoint. As expected, we find a magnetic field induced anisotropic diffusion, with a stronger diffusion in the longitudinal direction compared to the transversal one. We backup, at least qualitatively, our findings with a hanging string analysis of heavy quark diffusion in a magnetic field. From the quark number susceptibility we can extract an estimate for the effective deconfinement temperature in the heavy quark sector, reporting consistency with the phenomenon of inverse magnetic catalysis.

Solving the Schwarzian via the Conformal Bootstrap

We obtain exact expressions for a general class of correlation functions in the 1D quantum mechanical model described by the Schwarzian action, that arises as the low energy limit of the SYK model. The answer takes the form of an integral of a momentum space amplitude obtained via a simple set of diagrammatic rules. The derivation relies on the precise equivalence between the 1D Schwarzian theory and a suitable large $c$ limit of 2D Virasoro CFT. The mapping from the 1D to the 2D theory is similar to the construction of kinematic space. We also compute the out-of-time ordered four point function. The momentum space amplitude in this case contains an extra factor in the form of a crossing kernel, or R-matrix, given by a 6j-symbol of SU(1,1). We argue that the R-matrix describes the gravitational scattering amplitude near the horizon of an AdS${}_2$ black hole. Finally, we discuss the generalization of some of our results to ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Schwarzian QM.

Deconfinement and chiral transition in AdS/QCD wall models supplemented with a magnetic field

We discuss the phenomenon of (inverse) magnetic catalysis for both the deconfinement and chiral transition. We discriminate between the hard and soft wall model, which we suitably generalize to include a magnetic field. Our findings show a critical deconfinement temperature going down, in contrast with the chiral restoration temperature growing with increasing magnetic field. This is at odds with contemporary lattice data, so the quest for a holographic QCD model capable of capturing inverse magnetic catalysis in the chiral sector remains open.
