The Polarization Asymmetry and Triple Gauge Boson Couplings in $γe$ Collisions at the NLC

We examine the capability of the NLC in the $γe$ collider mode to probe the CP-conserving $γWW$ and $γZZ$ anomalous couplings through the use of the polarization asymmetry. When combined with other measurements, very strong constraints on both varieties of anomalous couplings can be obtained. [To appear in {\it Physics and Technology of the Next Linear Collider}, eds. Anomalous Chromoelectric and Chromomagnetic Moments of the Top Quark at the NLC

The production of top quark pairs in association with a hard gluon in $e^+e^-$ collisions at the NLC provides an opportunity to probe for anomalous $t\bar tg$ couplings, \eg, the chromoelectric and chromomagnetic moments of the top. We demonstrate that an examination of the energy spectrum of the additional gluon jet can yield strong constraints on the size of these two anomalous couplings. The results are shown to be quite sensitive to the cut on the minimum gluon jet energy needed to remove events where the final state $b$-quark radiates strongly. The possibility of using additional observables to improve the sensitivity to anomalous couplings is briefly discussed. [To appear in {\it Physics and Technology of the Next Linear Collider}, eds. Below Threshold $Z'$ Mass and Coupling Determinations at the NLC

We examine the capability of the NLC to determine the mass as well as the couplings to leptons and $b$-quarks of a new neutral gauge boson below production threshold. By using data collected at several different values of $\sqrt s$, we demonstrate how this can be done in a model-independent manner. Z Anomalous Couplings and the Polarization Asymmetry in $γe \to Ze$

We extend our previous analysis of the sensitivity of the energy dependence of the polarization asymmetry in $γe \to Wν$ to the possible existence of anomalous trilinear gauge couplings to the $γe \to Ze$ case. We find that by combining the constraints imposed by both the energy dependence of the total cross section and polarization asymmetry, strong limits on the anomalous $γZZ$ couplings are obtainable at the Next Linear Collider. Further constraints obtained from a consideration of the angular distribution are briefly discussed.

Extended Gauge Models and $e^-e^- \to W^-W^-$ at the NLC

We briefly discuss two possible manifestations of the lepton number violating reaction $e^-e^- \to W_i^-W_j^{(*)-}$, which probes the masses and mixings of heavy Majorana neutrinos, at the Next Linear Collider(NLC). Cross sections for this process are shown to be potentially quite large at center of mass energies of order 1-1.5 TeV. Like-Sign Charged Higgs Boson Production in $e^-e^-$ Collisions at the NLC

We consider the production of a pair of like-sign charged Higgs bosons in $e^-e^-$ collisions at the NLC within the context of several electroweak models with extended symmetry breaking sectors. We find that the rate for this process, which proceeds through $W^-W^-$ fusion, is a very sensitive probe of the nature of these extended Higgs sectors and that the corresponding cross sections can vary by as much as several orders of magnitude at NLC energies. Single Top Quark Production as a Probe for Anomalous Moments at Hadron Colliders

Single production of top quarks at hadron colliders via $gW$ fusion is examined as a probe of possible anomalous chromomagnetic and/or chromoelectric moment type couplings between the top and gluons. We find that this channel is far less sensitive to the existence of anomalous couplings of this kind than is the usual production of top pairs by $gg$ or $q\bar q$ fusion. This result is found to hold at both the Tevatron as well as the LHC although somewhat greater sensitivity for anomalous couplings in this channel is found at the higher energy machine.

Can We Observe Weak Anomalous Couplings of Heavy Quarks Through Three Jet Events?

The rates and corresponding jet distributions for the decay $Z\to b\bar bg$ and the process $e^+e^-\to t\bar tg$ may be sensitive to anomalous dipole-like couplings of heavy quarks to the photon and $Z$. In the $b$-quark case, after updating our previous analysis on the constraints imposed by current experiments on $Zb\bar b$ anomalous couplings, we show that the variation of these couplings within their presently allowed ranges leads to rather minor modifications to the Standard Model expectations for $Z\to b\bar bg$ observables. In the $t$-quark case, significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions for $t\bar tg$ production at the Next Linear Collider are possible.

W ANOMALOUS MOMENTS AND THE POLARIZATION ASYMMETRY ZERO IN gamma e --> W nu

We show from general principles that there must be a center of mass energy, $\sqrt s_0$, where the polarization asymmetry $A=Δσ({γe \to W ν})/ σ({γe \to W ν})$ for circularly-polarized photon and electron beams vanishes. In the case of the Standard Model, the crossing point where the asymmetry changes sign occurs in Born approximation at $\sqrt s_{γe} = 3.1583\ldots M_W \simeq 254$ GeV. We demonstrate the sensitivity of the position of the polarization asymmetry zero to modifications of the SM trilinear $γW W$ coupling. Given reasonable assumptions for the luminosity and energy range for the Next Linear Collider(NLC) with a backscattered laser beam, we show that the zero point, $\sqrt s_0$, of the polarization asymmetry may be determined with sufficient precision to constrain the anomalous couplings of the $W$ to better than the 1\% level at $95\%$ CL. In addition to the fact that only a limited range of energy is required, the polarization asymmetry measurements have the important advantage that many of the systematic errors cancel in taking cross section ratios. The position of the zero thus provides an additional weapon in the arsenal used to probe anomalous trilinear gauge couplings.

Extended Gauge Sectors

Present and future prospects for the discovery of new gauge bosons, $Z'$ and $W'$, are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to hadron and $e^+e^-$ collider searches for the $W'$ of the Left-Right Symmetric Model. Constraints on the Left-Right Symmetric Model from $b\to sγ$

The recent observation by the CLEO Collaboration of the inclusive decay $b\to sγ$ with a branching fraction consistent with the expectations of the Standard Model is used to constrain the parameter space of the Left-Right Symmetric Model. Two scenarios are considered: ($i$) equal left- and right- handed Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrices, $V_L=V_R (~{\rm or}~V_R^*)$ and ($ii$) the Gronau-Wakaizumi model wherein B-decays proceed only via right-handed currents and $V_L$ and $V_R$ are quite distinct. In the later case the bounds from $b\to sγ$ are combined with other constraints leaving a parameter range that is very highly restricted and which implies that this model may soon be completely ruled out by improving data. Searching for Anomalous Weak Couplings of Heavy Flavors at the SLC and LEP

The existence of anomalous electric($\tilde κ$) and/or magnetic($κ$) dipole moment couplings between the heavy flavor fermions ($c,b,τ$) and the $Z$ boson can cause significant shifts in the values of several electroweak observables currently being probed at both the SLC and LEP. Using the good agreement between existing data and the predictions of the Standard Model we obtain strict bounds on the possible strength of these new interactions for all of the heavy flavors. The decay $Z\rightarrow b\bar b$, however, provides some possible hint of new physics. The corresponding anomalous couplings of $τ$'s to photons is briefly examined.

Signals for Top Quark Anomalous Chromomagnetic Moments at Colliders

The Tevatron and the Next Linear Collider(NLC) will be excellent tools for probing the detailed nature of the top quark. We perform a preliminary examination of the influence of an anomalous chromomagnetic moment for the top, $κ$, on the characteristics of $t\bar t$ production at the Tevatron and on the spectrum of gluon radiation associated with $t\bar t$ production at the NLC. In particular, we analyze the sensitivity of future data to non-zero values of $κ$ and estimate the limits that can be placed on this parameter at the Tevatron and at the NLC with center of mass energies of $\sqrt {s}=$ 500 and 1000 GeV. Constraints on $κ$ from low energy processes, such as $b\rightarrow sγ$, are briefly discussed.

Extending the Kinematic Range for $W_R$ Searches in $e^-e^-$ Collisions at the NLC

While the much discussed lepton-number violating process $e^-e^-\rightarrow W_R^-W_R^-$ provides an excellent probe of both the Majorana nature of the right-handed neutrino and the symmetry breaking sector of the Left-Right Symmetric Model, it is likely that $W_R$'s are too massive to be pair produced at the NLC with $\sqrt {s}$ in the 1-1.5 TeV range. We are thus lead to consider the single $W_R$ production process $e^-e^-\rightarrow W_R^-(W_R^-)^* \rightarrow W_R^-+jj$ in order to expand the collider's kinematic reach. After pointing out that $W_R$'s with masses of order 1 TeV may be missed by future hadron collider searches, we demonstrate that this three-body process possesses a significant cross section, of order several fb, at the NLC with $\sqrt {s}$ in the range above. The angular distribution of the produced $W_R$'s is shown to be essentially flat and the potential backgrounds from standard model processes are shown to be small.

Diphoton Production at Hadron Colliders and New Contact Interactions

We explore the capability of the Tevatron and LHC to place limits on the possible existence of flavor-independent $q \bar q γγ$ contact interactions which can lead to an excess of diphoton events with large invariant masses. Assuming no departure from the Standard Model is observed, we show that the Tevatron will eventually be able to place a lower bound of 0.5-0.6 TeV on the scale associated with this new contact interaction. At the LHC, scales as large as 3-6 TeV may be probed with suitable detector cuts and an integrated luminosity of $100 fb^{-1}$.

In particular, we analyze the sensitivity of future data to non-zero values of $κ$ and estimate the limits that can be placed on this parameter at the NLC with center of mass energies $\sqrt {s}=$ 500 and 1000 GeV.

Single $W_R$ Production in $e^-e^-$ Collisions at the NLC

Single $W_R$ production in $e^-e^-$ collisions at the NLC can be used to probe the Majorana nature of the heavy neutrinos present in the Left-Right Symmetric Model below the kinematic threshold for their direct production. For colliders in the $\sqrt {s}=1-1.5$ TeV range, typical cross sections of order $1-10 fb$ are obtained, depending on the specific choice of model parameters. Backgrounds arising from Standard Model processes are shown to be small. This analysis greatly extends the kinematic range of previous studies wherein the production of an on-shell, like-sign pair of $W_R$'s at the NLC was considered.

$A_{LR}$, Negative $S$, and Extended Gauge Models

The implications of the recent measurement of the left-right asymmetry, $A_{LR}$, by the SLD Collaboration for theories with extended gauge sectors is examined. We show that it is possible to arrange for large, negative values of $S$, based on an analysis of leptonic data, without serious side effects for other observables in certain classes of models. The implications of such scenarios for future measurements on the $Z$ peak, at the Tevatron, and for atomic parity violation experiments are examined.
