Strain distributions in lattice-mismatched semiconductor core-shell nanowires

The authors study the elastic deformation field in lattice-mismatched core-shell nanowires with single and multiple shells. The authors consider infinite wires with a hexagonal cross section under the assumption of translational symmetry. The strain distributions are found by minimizing the elastic energy per unit cell using the finite element method. The authors find that the trace of the strain is discontinuous with a simple, almost piecewise variation between core and shell, whereas the individual components of the strain can exhibit complex variations.

Supersymmetry in Random Matrix Theory

Supersymmetry is nowadays indispensable for many problems in Random Matrix Theory. It is presented here with an emphasis on conceptual and structural issues. An introduction to supermathematics is given. The Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation as well as its generalization and superbosonization are explained. The supersymmetric non-linear sigma model, Brownian motion in superspace and the color-flavor transformation are discussed.

A new approach to derive Pfaffian structures for random matrix ensembles

Correlation functions for matrix ensembles with orthogonal and unitarysymplectic rotation symmetry are more complicated to calculate than in the unitary case. The supersymmetry method and the orthogonal polynomials are two techniques to tackle this task. Recently, we presented a new method to average ratios of characteristic polynomials over matrix ensembles invariant under the unitary group. Here, we extend this approach to ensembles with orthogonal and unitary-symplectic rotation symmetry. We show that Pfaffian structures can be derived for a wide class of orthogonal and unitary-symplectic rotation invariant ensembles in a unifying way. This includes also those for which this structure was not known previously, as the real Ginibre ensemble and the Gaussian real chiral ensemble with two independent matrices as well.

Derivation of determinantal structures for random matrix ensembles in a new way

There are several methods to treat ensembles of random matrices in symmetric spaces, circular matrices, chiral matrices and others. Orthogonal polynomials and the supersymmetry method are particular powerful techniques. Here, we present a new approach to calculate averages over ratios of characteristic polynomials. At first sight paradoxically, one can coin our approach "supersymmetry without supersymmetry" because we use structures from supersymmetry without actually mapping onto superspaces. We address two kinds of integrals which cover a wide range of applications for random matrix ensembles. For probability densities factorizing in the eigenvalues we find determinantal structures in a unifying way. As a new application we derive an expression for the k-point correlation function of an arbitrary rotation invariant probability density over the Hermitian matrices in the presence of an external field.

Exact Coupling Coefficient Distribution in the Doorway Mechanism

In many--body and other systems, the physics situation often allows one to interpret certain, distinct states by means of a simple picture. In this interpretation, the distinct states are not eigenstates of the full Hamiltonian. Hence, there is an interaction which makes the distinct states act as doorways into background states which are modeled statistically. The crucial quantities are the overlaps between the eigenstates of the full Hamiltonian and the doorway states, that is, the coupling coefficients occuring in the expansion of true eigenstates in the simple model basis. Recently, the distribution of the maximum coupling coefficients was introduced as a new, highly sensitive statistical observable. In the particularly important regime of weak interactions, this distribution is very well approximated by the fidelity distribution, defined as the distribution of the overlap between the doorway states with interaction and without interaction. Using a random matrix model, we calculate the latter distribution exactly for regular and chaotic background states in the cases of preserved and fully broken time--reversal invariance. We also perform numerical simulations and find excellent agreement with our analytical results.

Exact Fidelity and Full Fidelity Statistics in Regular and Chaotic Surroundings

For a prepared state exact expressions for the time dependent mean fidelity as well as for the mean inverse paricipation ratio are obtained analytically. The distribution function of fidelity in the long time limit and of inverse participation ratio are studied numerically and analytically. Surprising features like fidelity revival and enhanced non--ergodicity are observed. The role of the coupling coefficients and of complexity of background is studied as well.

Collective versus Single--Particle Motion in Quantum Many--Body Systems from the Perspective of an Integrable Model

We study the emergence of collective dynamics in the integrable Hamiltonian system of two finite ensembles of coupled harmonic oscillators. After identification of a collective degree of freedom, the Hamiltonian is mapped onto a model of Caldeira-Leggett type, where the collective coordinate is coupled to an internal bath of phonons. In contrast to the usual Caldeira-Leggett model, the bath in the present case is part of the system. We derive an equation of motion for the collective coordinate which takes the form of a damped harmonic oscillator. We show that the distribution of quantum transition strengths induced by the collective mode is determined by its classical dynamics.

Arbitrary rotation invariant random matrix ensembles and supersymmetry: orthogonal and unitary-symplectic case

Recently, the supersymmetry method was extended from Gaussian ensembles to arbitrary unitarily invariant matrix ensembles by generalizing the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. Here, we complete this extension by including arbitrary orthogonally and unitary-symplectically invariant matrix ensembles. The results are equivalent to, but the approach is different from the superbosonization formula. We express our results in a unifying way. We also give explicit expressions for all one-point functions and discuss features of the higher order correlations.

Comparison of the superbosonization formula and the generalized Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation

Recently, two different approaches were put forward to extend the supersymmetry method in random matrix theory from Gaussian ensembles to general rotation invariant ensembles. These approaches are the generalized Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation and the superbosonization formula. Here, we prove the equivalence of both approaches. To this end, we reduce integrals over functions of supersymmetric Wishart-matrices to integrals over quadratic supermatrices of certain symmetries.

Integration of Grassmann variables over invariant functions on flat superspaces

We study integration over functions on superspaces. These functions are invariant under a transformation which maps the whole superspace onto the part of the superspace which only comprises purely commuting variables. We get a compact expression for the differential operator with respect to the commuting variables which results from Berezin integration over all Grassmann variables. Also, we derive Cauchy--like integral theorems for invariant functions on supervectors and symmetric supermatrices. This extends theorems partly derived by other authors. As an physical application, we calculate the generating function of the one--point correlation function in random matrix theory. Furthermore, we give another derivation of supermatrix Bessel--functions for U(k_1/k_2).

Families of spherical caps: spectra and ray limit

We consider a family of surfaces of revolution ranging between a disc and a hemisphere, that is spherical caps. For this family, we study the spectral density in the ray limit and arrive at a trace formula with geodesic polygons describing the spectral fluctuations. When the caps approach the hemisphere the spectrum becomes equally spaced and highly degenerate whereas the derived trace formula breaks down. We discuss its divergence and also derive a different trace formula for this hemispherical case. We next turn to perturbative corrections in the wave number where the work in the literature is done for either flat domains or curved without boundaries. In the present case, we calculate the leading correction explicitly and incorporate it into the semiclassical expression for the fluctuating part of the spectral density. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first calculation of such perturbative corrections in the case of curvature and boundary.

Credit risk - A structural model with jumps and correlations

We set up a structural model to study credit risk for a portfolio containing several or many credit contracts. The model is based on a jump--diffusion process for the risk factors, i.e. for the company assets. We also include correlations between the companies. We discuss that models of this type have much in common with other problems in statistical physics and in the theory of complex systems. We study a simplified version of our model analytically. Furthermore, we perform extensive numerical simulations for the full model. The observables are the loss distribution of the credit portfolio, its moments and other quantities derived thereof. We compile detailed information about the parameter dependence of these observables. In the course of setting up and analyzing our model, we also give a review of credit risk modeling for a physics audience.

Norm-dependent Random Matrix Ensembles in External Field and Supersymmetry

The class of norm-dependent Random Matrix Ensembles is studied in the presence of an external field. The probability density in those ensembles depends on the trace of the squared random matrices, but is otherwise arbitrary. An exact mapping to superspace is performed. A transformation formula is derived which gives the probability density in superspace as a single integral over the probability density in ordinary space. This is done for orthogonal, unitary and symplectic symmetry. In the case of unitary symmetry, some explicit results for the correlation functions are derived.

Arbitrary Rotation Invariant Random Matrix Ensembles and Supersymmetry

We generalize the supersymmetry method in Random Matrix Theory to arbitrary rotation invariant ensembles. Our exact approach further extends a previous contribution in which we constructed a supersymmetric representation for the class of norm-dependent Random Matrix Ensembles. Here, we derive a supersymmetric formulation under very general circumstances. A projector is identified that provides the mapping of the probability density from ordinary to superspace. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that setting up the theory in Fourier superspace has considerable advantages. General and exact expressions for the correlation functions are given. We also show how the use of hyperbolic symmetry can be circumvented in the present context in which the non-linear sigma model is not used. We construct exact supersymmetric integral representations of the correlation functions for arbitrary positions of the imaginary increments in the Green functions.

Semiclassical limits for the QCD Dirac operator

We identify three semiclassical parameters in the QCD Dirac operator. Mutual coupling of the different types of degrees of freedom (translational, colour and spin) depends on how the semiclassical limit is taken. We discuss various semiclassical limits and their potential to describe spectrum and spectral statistics of the QCD Dirac operator close to zero virtuality.

Supersymmetric Extensions of Calogero--Moser--Sutherland like Models: Construction and Some Solutions

We introduce a new class of models for interacting particles. Our construction is based on Jacobians for the radial coordinates on certain superspaces. The resulting models contain two parameters determining the strengths of the interactions. This extends and generalizes the models of the Calogero--Moser--Sutherland type for interacting particles in ordinary spaces. The latter ones are included in our models as special cases. Using results which we obtained previously for spherical functions in superspaces, we obtain various properties and some explicit forms for the solutions. We present physical interpretations. Our models involve two kinds of interacting particles. One of the models can be viewed as describing interacting electrons in a lower and upper band of a one--dimensional semiconductor. Another model is quasi--two--dimensional. Two kinds of particles are confined to two different spatial directions, the interaction contains dipole--dipole or tensor forces.

Energy localization in two chaotically coupled systems

We set up and analyze a random matrix model to study energy localization and its time behavior in two chaotically coupled systems. This investigation is prompted by a recent experimental and theoretical study of Weaver and Lobkis on coupled elastomechanical systems. Our random matrix model properly describes the main features of the findings by Weaver and Lobkis. Due to its general character, our model is also applicable to similar systems in other areas of physics -- for example, to chaotically coupled quantum dots.

Supersymmetry and Models for Two Kinds of Interacting Particles

We show that Calogero-Sutherland models for interacting particles have a natural supersymmetric extension. For the construction, we use Jacobians which appear in certain superspaces. Some of the resulting Hamiltonians have a direct physics interpretation as models for two kinds of interacting particles. One model may serve to describe interacting electrons in a lower and upper band of a quasi-one-dimensional semiconductor, another model corresponds to two kinds of particles confined to two different spatial directions with an interaction involving tensor forces.
