Constructing completely integrable fields by a generalized-streamlines method

The classical approach to visualizing a flow, in terms of its streamlines, motivates a topological/soft-analytic argument for constrained variational equations. In its full generality, that argument provides an explicit formula for completely integrable solutions to a broad class of n-dimensional quasilinear exterior systems. In particular, it yields explicit solutions for extremal surfaces in Minkowski space and for Born--Infeld models.

Duality methods for a class of quasilinear systems

Duality methods are used to generate explicit solutions to nonlinear Hodge systems, demonstrate the well-posedness of boundary value problems, and reveal, via the Hodge-Bäcklund transformation, underlying symmetries among superficially different forms of the equations.

Unique solutions to boundary value problems in the cold plasma model

The unique existence of a weak solution to the homogeneous closed Dirichlet problem on certain D-star-shaped domains is proven for a mixed elliptic-hyperbolic equation. Equations of this kind arise in models for electromagnetic wave propagation in cold plasma. A related class of open boundary value problems is shown to possess strong solutions.

Mathematical aspects of the cold plasma model

A simple model for electromagnetic wave propagation through zero-temperature plasma is analyzed. Many of the complexities of the plasma state are present even under these idealized conditions, and a number of mathematical difficulties emerge. In particular, boundary value problems formulated on the basis of conventional electromagnetic theory turn out to be ill-posed in this context. However, conditions may be prescribed under which solutions to the Dirichlet problem exist in an appropriately weak sense. In addition to its physical interest, analysis of the cold plasma model illuminates generic difficulties in formulating and solving boundary value problems for mixed elliptic-hyperbolic partial differential equations.

Uniqueness theorems for equations of Keldysh Type

A fundamental result that characterizes elliptic-hyperbolic equations of Tricomi type, the uniqueness of classical solutions to the open Dirichlet problem, is extended to a large class of elliptic-hyperbolic equations of Keldysh type. The result implies the non-existence of classical solutions to the closed Dirichlet problem for this class of equations. A uniqueness theorem is also proven for a mixed Dirichlet-Neumann problem. A generalized uniqueness theorem for the adjoint operator leads to the existence of distribution solutions to the closed Dirichlet problem in a special case.

Hodge-Frobenius equations and the Hodge-Backlund transformation

Linear and nonlinear Hodge-like systems for 1-forms are studied, with an assumption equivalent to complete integrability substituted for the requirement of closure under exterior differentiation. The systems are placed in a variational context and properties of critical points investigated. Certain standard choices of energy density are related by Backlund transformations which employ basic properties of the Hodge involution. These Hodge-Backlund transformations yield invariant forms of classical Backlund transformations that arise in diverse contexts. Some extensions to higher-degree forms are indicated.

Variational equations on mixed Riemannian-Lorentzian metrics

A class of elliptic-hyperbolic equations is placed in the context of a geometric variational theory, in which the change of type is viewed as a change in the character of an underlying metric. A fundamental example of a metric which changes in this way is the extended projective disc, which is Riemannian at ordinary points, Lorentzian at ideal points, and singular on the absolute. Harmonic fields on such a metric can be interpreted as the hodograph image of extremal surfaces in Minkowski 3-space. This suggests an approach to generalized Plateau problems in 3-dimensional space-time via Hodge theory on the extended projective disc. Analogous variational problems arise on Riemannian-Lorentzian flow metrics in fiber bundles (twisted nonlinear Hodge equations), and on certain singular Riemannian-Lorentzian manifolds which occur in relativity and quantum cosmology. The examples surveyed come with natural gauge theories and Hodge dualities. This paper is mainly a review, but some technical extensions are proven.

Energy inequalities for a model of wave propagation in cold plasma

Energy inequalities are derived for an elliptic-hyperbolic operator arising in plasma physics. These inequalities imply the existence of distribution and weak solutions to various closed boundary-value problems. An existence theorem is proven for a related class of Keldysh equations, and the failure of expected methods for obtaining uniqueness is discussed. The proofs use ideas recently introduced by Lupo, Morawetz, and Payne for a generalized Tricomi operator. The existence of strong solutions under open boundary conditions is also proven.

Harmonic fields on the extended projective disc and a problem in optics

The Hodge equations for 1-forms are studied on Beltrami's projective disc model for hyperbolic space. Ideal points lying beyond projective infinity arise naturally in both the geometric and analytic arguments. An existence theorem for weakly harmonic 1-fields, changing type on the unit circle, is derived under Dirichlet conditions imposed on the non-characteristic portion of the boundary. A similar system arises in the analysis of wave motion near a caustic. A class of elliptic-hyperbolic boundary-value problems is formulated for those equations as well. For both classes of boundary-value problems, an arbitrarily small lower-order perturbation of the equations is shown to yield solutions which are strong in the sense of Friedrichs.

On a class of mappings between Riemannian manifolds

Effects of geometric constraints on a steady flow potential are described by an elliptic-hyperbolic generalization of the harmonic map equations. Sufficient conditions are given for global triviality.

Nonlinear Hodge maps

We consider maps between Riemannian manifolds in which the map is a stationary point of the nonlinear Hodge energy. The variational equations of this functional form a quasilinear, nondiagonal, nonuniformly elliptic system which models certain kinds of compressible flow. Conditions are found under which singular sets of prescribed dimension cannot occur. Various degrees of smoothness are proven for the sonic limit, high-dimensional flow, and flow having nonzero vorticity. The gradient flow of solutions is estimated. Implications for other quasilinear field theories are suggested.

Maps and fields with compressible density

Properties of steady compressible flow for which geometric constraints have been placed on the potential function are derived, under hypotheses on the flow density and the singular set. Some related unconstrained problems are also considered, including the estimation of a class of fields having nonzero vorticity.

A boundary-value problem for cold plasma dynamics

A weak Guderley-Morawetz problem is formulated for a mixed elliptic-hyperbolic system that arises in models of wave propagation in cold plasma. Weak solutions are shown to exist in a weighted Hilbert space. This result extends work by Yamamoto.

Hodge equations with change of type

A geometric interpretation is given for certain elliptic-hyperbolic systems in the plane. Among several examples, one which reduces in the elliptic region to the equations for harmonic 1-forms on the projective disc is studied in detail. A boundary-value problem for this example is formulated and is shown to possess weak solutions.
