Cosmic eggs to relax the cosmological constant

In theories with extra dimensions, the cosmological hierarchy problem can be thought of as the unnaturally large radius of the observable universe in Kaluza-Klein units. We sketch a dynamical mechanism that relaxes this. In the early universe scenario we propose, three large spatial dimensions arise through tunneling from a 'cosmic egg', an effectively one-dimensional configuration with all spatial dimensions compact and of comparable, small size. If the string landscape is dominated by low-dimensional compactifications, cosmic eggs would be natural initial conditions for cosmology. A quantum cosmological treatment of a toy model egg predicts that, in a variant of the Hartle-Hawking state, cosmic eggs break to form higher dimensional universes with a small, but positive cosmological constant or quintessence energy. Hence cosmic egg cosmology yields a scenario in which the seemingly unnaturally small observed value of the vacuum energy can arise from natural initial conditions.

Novel higher-curvature variations of $R^2$ inflation

We put forward novel extensions of Starobinsky inflation, involving a class of 'geometric' higher-curvature corrections that yield second-order Friedmann-Lemaître equations and second-order-in-time linearized equations around cosmological backgrounds. We determine the range of models within this class that admit an extended phase of slow roll inflation as an attractor. By embedding these theories in anti-de Sitter space, we derive holographic 'unitarity' bounds on the two dominant higher-order curvature corrections. Finally we compute the leading corrections to the spectral properties of scalar and tensor primordial perturbations, including the modified consistency relation $r=-8n_{T}$. Remarkably, the range of models singled out by holography nearly coincides with the current observational bounds on the scalar spectral tilt. Our results indicate that future observations have the potential to discriminate between different higher-curvature corrections considered here.

Ringing of rotating black holes in higher-derivative gravity

We compute scalar quasinormal mode (QNM) frequencies in rotating black hole solutions of the most general class of higher-derivative gravity theories, to quartic order in the curvature, that reduce to General Relativity for weak fields and are compatible with its symmetries. The wave operator governing the QNMs is not separable, but we show one can extract the QNM frequencies by a projection onto the set of spheroidal harmonics. We have obtained accurate results for the quasinormal frequency corrections relative to Kerr for rotating black holes with dimensionless spins up to $\sim 0.7$. We also discuss to what extent our results carry over to the phenomenologically more relevant case of gravitational QNMs. Finally we provide an ancillary computational package that allows one to generalize our calculations to any effective energy-momentum tensor arising from higher-derivative terms in the effective action.

Prospects for Fundamental Physics with LISA

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

Scalar Self-force for High Spin Black Holes

We semianalytically investigate the scalar self-force experienced in the final stages of extreme mass ratio inspirals of nonspinning scalar particles into supermassive nearly extremal Kerr black holes. We exploit the near-horizon conformal symmetry to find the self-force for general corotating equatorial geodesics. The angular component of the self-force is shown to be universal at leading order in the high spin limit. We verify that the energy and angular momentum losses of the scalar particle match with the asymptotic fluxes of scalar radiation. In particular, we relate the previously described persistent oscillations in the asymptotic energy and angular momentum fluxes with the local self-force. Such oscillations arise from traveling waves that prevent the near-horizon and the asymptotic region to fully decouple in the extremal limit. Conformal invariance is therefore reduced to discrete scale invariance with associated logarithmic periodicity.

Stephen William Hawking: A Biographical Memoir

Stephen Hawking's contributions to the understanding of gravity, black holes and cosmology were truly immense. They began with the singularity theorems in the 1960s followed by his discovery that black holes have an entropy and consequently a finite temperature. Black holes were predicted to emit thermal radiation, what is now called Hawking radiation. He pioneered the study of primordial black holes and their potential role in cosmology. His organisation of and contributions to the Nuffield Workshop in 1982 consolidated the picture that the large-scale structure of the universe originated as quantum fluctuations during the inflationary era. Work on the interplay between quantum mechanics and general relativity resulted in his formulation of the concept of the wavefunction of the universe. The tension between quantum mechanics and general relativity led to his struggles with the information paradox concerning deep connections between these fundamental areas of physics. These achievements were all accomplished following the diagnosis during the early years of Stephen's studies as a post-graduate student in Cambridge that he had incurable motor neuron disease -- he was given two years to live. Against all the odds, he lived a further 55 years. The distinction of his work led to many honours and he became a major public figure, promoting with passion the needs of disabled people. His popular best-selling book A Brief History of Time made cosmology and his own work known to the general public worldwide. He became an icon for science and an inspiration to all.

Spinors in Supersymmetric dS/CFT

We study fermionic bulk fields in the dS/CFT dualities relating ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Euclidean vector models with reversed spin-statistics in three dimensions to supersymmetric Vasiliev theories in four-dimensional de Sitter space. These dualities specify the Hartle - Hawking wave function in terms of the partition function of deformations of the vector models. We evaluate this wave function in homogeneous minisuperspace models consisting of supersymmetry-breaking combinations of a half-integer spin field with either a scalar, a pseudoscalar or a metric squashing. The wave function appears to be well-behaved and globally peaked at or near the supersymmetric de Sitter vacuum, with a low amplitude for large deformations. Its behavior in the semiclassical limit qualitatively agrees with earlier bulk computations both for massless and massive fermionic fields.

Gravitational waves from plunges into Gargantua

We analytically compute time domain gravitational waveforms produced in the final stages of extreme mass ratio inspirals of non-spinning compact objects into supermassive nearly extremal Kerr black holes. Conformal symmetry relates all corotating equatorial orbits in the geodesic approximation to circular orbits through complex conformal transformations. We use this to obtain the time domain Teukolsky perturbations for generic equatorial corotating plunges in closed form. The resulting gravitational waveforms consist of an intermediate polynomial ringdown phase in which the decay rate depends on the impact parameters, followed by an exponential quasi-normal mode decay. The waveform amplitude exhibits critical behavior when the orbital angular momentum tends to a minimal value determined by the innermost stable circular orbit. We show that either near-critical or large angular momentum leads to a significant extension of the LISA observable volume of gravitational wave sources of this kind.

The no-boundary proposal in biaxial Bianchi IX minisuperspace

We implement the no-boundary proposal for the wave function of the universe in an exactly solvable Bianchi IX minisuperspace model with two scale factors. We extend our earlier work (Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 081302, 2018 / arXiv:1804.01102) to include the contribution from the $\mathbb{C}\text{P}^2 \setminus B^4$ topology. The resulting wave function yields normalizable probabilities and thus fits into a predictive framework for semiclassical quantum cosmology. We find that the amplitude is low for large anisotropies. In the isotropic limit the usual Hartle-Hawking wave function for the de Sitter minisuperspace model is recovered. Inhomogeneous perturbations in an extended minisuperspace are shown to be initially in their ground state. We also demonstrate that the precise mathematical implementation of the no-boundary proposal as a functional integral in minisuperspace depends on detailed aspects of the model, including the choice of gauge-fixing. This shows in particular that the choice of contour cannot be fundamental, adding weight to the recent proposal that the semiclassical no-boundary wave function should be defined solely in terms of a collection of saddle points. We adopt this approach in most of this paper. Finally we show that the semiclassical tunneling wave function of the universe is essentially equal to the no-boundary state in this particular minisuperspace model, at least in the subset of the classical domain where the former is known.

Imaging Higher Dimensional Black Objects

We develop a systematic ray-tracing method which can be used to explore a wide class of higher-dimensional multi-center black objects through the shape of their shadows. As a proof of principle, we test our method by imaging black holes and black rings in five dimensions. Two-dimensional slices of the three-dimensional shadows of those five-dimensional black objects not only show new phenomena, such as the first image of a toroidal horizon, but also offer a new viewpoint on black holes and binary systems in four dimensions.

Euclidean axion wormholes have multiple negative modes

We show that Euclidean axion wormholes in theories of gravity coupled to a single axion have several independent inhomogeneous perturbations that lower the Euclidean action. Our analysis relies on a judiciously chosen gauge-invariant variable which makes the negative mode structure about axion wormholes transparent. Perturbations lowering the action are concentrated in the neck region and exist for wormholes in flat space and in AdS. Their presence means axion wormholes are not relevant saddle points of the functional integral in quantum gravity. This resolves the paradoxes associated with these solutions from the viewpoint of AdS/CFT. We conjecture that the lower action configurations one flows to are ensembles of microscopic `quantum wormholes' with unit charge.

What is the No-Boundary Wave Function of the Universe?

We specify the semiclassical no-boundary wave function of the universe without relying on a functional integral of any kind. The wave function is given as a sum of specific saddle points of the dynamical theory that satisfy conditions of regularity on geometry and field and which together yield a time neutral state that is normalizable in an appropriate inner product. This specifies a predictive framework of semiclassical quantum cosmology that is adequate to make probabilistic predictions, which are in agreement with observations in simple models. The use of holography to go beyond the semiclassical approximation is briefly discussed.

Damped perturbations in the no-boundary state

We evaluate the no-boundary path integral exactly in a Bianchi IX minisuperspace with two scale factors. In this model the no-boundary proposal can be implemented by requiring one scale factor to be zero initially together with a judiciously chosen regularity condition on the momentum conjugate to the second scale factor. Taking into account the non-linear backreaction of the perturbations we recover the predictions of the original semiclassical no-boundary proposal. In particular we find that large perturbations are strongly damped, consistent with vacuum state wave functions.

A Smooth Exit from Eternal Inflation?

The usual theory of inflation breaks down in eternal inflation. We derive a dual description of eternal inflation in terms of a deformed Euclidean CFT located at the threshold of eternal inflation. The partition function gives the amplitude of different geometries of the threshold surface in the no-boundary state. Its local and global behavior in dual toy models shows that the amplitude is low for surfaces which are not nearly conformal to the round three-sphere and essentially zero for surfaces with negative curvature. Based on this we conjecture that the exit from eternal inflation does not produce an infinite fractal-like multiverse, but is finite and reasonably smooth.

Squashed Holography with Scalar Condensates

We evaluate the partition function of the free and interacting O(N) vector model on a two-parameter family of squashed three spheres in the presence of a scalar deformation. We also find everywhere regular solutions of Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar field in AdS and in dS with the same double squashed boundary geometry. Remarkably, the thermodynamic properties of the AdS solutions qualitatively agree with the behavior predicted by the free O(N) model with a real mass deformation. The dS bulk solutions specify the semiclassical `no-boundary' measure over anisotropic deformations of inflationary, asymptotic de Sitter space. Through dS/CFT the partition function of the interacting O(N) model yields a holographic toy model of the no-boundary measure. We find this yields a qualitatively similar probability distribution which is normalizable and globally peaked at the round three sphere, with a low amplitude for strong anisotropies.

Supersymmetric dS/CFT

We put forward new explicit realisations of dS/CFT that relate ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Euclidean vector models with reversed spin-statistics in three dimensions to specific supersymmetric Vasiliev theories in four-dimensional de Sitter space. The partition function of the free supersymmetric vector model deformed by a range of low spin deformations that preserve supersymmetry appears to specify a well-defined wave function with asymptotic de Sitter boundary conditions in the bulk. In particular we find the wave function is globally peaked at undeformed de Sitter space, with a low amplitude for strong deformations. This suggests that supersymmetric de Sitter space is stable in higher-spin gravity and in particular free from ghosts. We speculate this is a limiting case of the de Sitter realizations in exotic string theories.

Interactions resolve state-dependence in a toy-model of AdS black holes

We show that the holographic description of a class of AdS black holes with scalar hair involves dual field theories with a double well effective potential. Black hole microstates have significant support around both vacua in the dual, which correspond to perturbative degrees of freedom on opposite sides of the horizon. A solvable toy-model version of this dual is given by a quantum mechanical particle in a double well potential. In this we show explicitly that the interactions replace the state-dependence that is needed to describe black hole microstates in a low energy effective model involving the tensor product of two decoupled harmonic oscillators. A naive number operator signals the presence of a firewall but a careful construction of perturbative states and operators extinguishes this.

Echoes of Kerr-like wormholes

Structure at the horizon scale of black holes would give rise to echoes of the gravitational wave signal associated with the post-merger ringdown phase in binary coalescences. We study the waveform of echoes in static and stationary, traversable wormholes in which perturbations are governed by a symmetric effective potential. We argue that echoes are dominated by the wormhole quasinormal frequency nearest to the fundamental black hole frequency that controls the primary signal. We put forward an accurate method to construct the echoes waveform(s) from the primary signal and the quasinormal frequencies of the wormhole, which we characterize. We illustrate this in the static Damour-Solodukhin wormhole and in a new, rotating generalization that approximates a Kerr black hole outside the throat. Rotation gives rise to a potential with an intermediate plateau region that breaks the degeneracy of the quasinormal frequencies. Rotation also leads to late-time instabilities which, however, fade away for small angular momentum.
