Nonlocal Symmetries, Spectral Parameter and Minimal Surfaces in AdS/CFT

We give a general account of nonlocal symmetries in symmetric space models and their relation to the AdS/CFT correspondence. In particular, we study a master symmetry which generates the spectral parameter and acts as a level-raising operator on the classical Yangian generators. The master symmetry extends to an infinite tower of symmetries with nonlocal Casimir elements as associated conserved charges. We discuss the algebraic properties of these symmetries and establish their role in explaining the recently observed one-parameter deformation of holographic Wilson loops. Finally, we provide a numerical framework, in which discretized minimal surfaces and their master symmetry deformation can be calculated.

Master Symmetry for Holographic Wilson Loops

We identify the symmetry underlying the recently observed spectral-parameter transformations of holographic Wilson loops alias minimal surfaces in AdS/CFT. The generator of this nonlocal symmetry is shown to furnish a raising operator on the classical Yangian-type charges of symmetric coset models. We explicitly demonstrate how this master symmetry acts on strong-coupling Wilson loops and indicate a possible extension to arbitrary coupling.

Double-Soft Limits of Gluons and Gravitons

The double-soft limit of gluon and graviton amplitudes is studied in four dimensions at tree level. In general this limit is ambiguous and we introduce two natural ways of taking it: A consecutive double-soft limit where one particle is taken soft before the other and a simultaneous limit where both particles are taken soft uniformly. All limits yield universal factorisation formulae which we establish by BCFW recursion relations down to the subleading order in the soft momentum expansion. These formulae generalise the recently discussed subleading single-soft theorems. While both types of limits yield identical results at the leading order, differences appear at the subleading order. Finally, we discuss double-scalar emission in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. These results should be of use in establishing the algebraic structure of potential hidden symmetries in the quantum gravity and Yang-Mills S-matrix.

Correlation Function of Circular Wilson Loops at Strong Coupling

We study the correlation function of two circular Wilson loops at strong coupling in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, the problem maps to finding the minimal surface between two circles defined on the boundary of AdS, and the fluctuations around the classical solution in AdS_5 x S^5. At the classical level, we derive the string solution in H_3 x S^1 explicitly, and focus on properties such as stability and phase transition. Furthermore, a computation of the associated algebraic curve is given. At the quantum level, the one-loop partition function is constructed by introducing quadratic bosonic and fermionic fluctuations around the classical solution, embedded in AdS_5 x S^5. We find an analytic, formal expression for the partition function in terms of an infinite product by employing the Gel'fand-Yaglom method and supersymmetric regularization. We regulate the expression and evaluate the partition function numerically.

Worldsheet Form Factors in AdS/CFT

We formulate a set of consistency conditions appropriate to worldsheet form factors in the massive, integrable but non-relativistic, light-cone gauge fixed AdS(5) x S**5 string theory. We then perturbatively verify that these conditions hold, at tree level in the near-plane-wave limit and to one loop in the near-flat (Maldacena-Swanson) limit, for a number of specific cases. We further study the form factors in the weakly coupled dual description, verifying that the relevant conditions naturally hold for the one-loop Heisenberg spin-chain. Finally, we note that the near-plane-wave expressions for the form factors, when further expanded in small momentum or, equivalently, large charge density, reproduce the thermodynamic limit of the spin-chain results at leading order.

Comments on World-Sheet Form Factors in AdS/CFT

We study form factors in the light-cone gauge world-sheet theory for strings in AdS_5 x S^5. We perturbatively calculate the two-particle form factor in a closed su(2) sector to one-loop in the near-plane-wave limit and to two-loops in the Maldacena-Swanson limit. We also perturbatively solve the functional equation which follows from the form factor axioms for the world-sheet theory and show that the "minimal" solution correctly reproduces the discontinuities of the perturbative calculations. Finally we propose a prescription, valid for polynomial orders of the inverse world-sheet length, for extracting the finite-volume world-sheet matrix element from the form factors and show that the two-excitation matrix element matches with the thermodynamic limit of the spin-chain description of certain tree-level N=4 SYM structure constants.

Review of AdS/CFT Integrability, Chapter IV.3: N=6 Chern-Simons and Strings on AdS4xCP3

We review the duality and integrability of N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions and IIA superstring theory on the background AdS4xCP3. We introduce both of these models and describe how their degrees of freedom are mapped to excitations of a long-range integrable spin-chain. Finally, we discuss the properties of the Bethe equations, the S-matrix and the algebraic curve that are special to this correspondence and differ from the case of N=4 SYM theory and strings on AdS5xS5.

A light-cone approach to three-point functions in AdS_5 x S^5

We consider worldsheet correlation functions for strings in AdS_5 x S^5 using a light-cone gauge for the worldsheet theory. We compute the saddle-point approximation to three-point functions of BMN vertex operators, all with large charges, by explicitly finding the intersection of three euclidean BMN strings. We repeat this calculation for non-BPS circular winding strings extended along a great circle of the S^5, though in this case the appropriate form of the vertex operator is uncertain. Furthermore, we compute the spectrum of fluctuations about euclidean BMN strings for generic boundary conditions, and show that the spectrum depends only on the total charge and not the details of the string configuration. We extend our considerations to include near-BMN vertex operators and through the evaluation of the string path integral make contact with the light-cone string field theory calculations of gauge theory three-point structure constants.

Green's Functions and Non-Singlet Glueballs on Deformed Conifolds

We study the Laplacian on Stenzel spaces (generalized deformed conifolds), which are tangent bundles of spheres endowed with Ricci flat metrics. The (2d-2)-dimensional Stenzel space has SO(d) symmetry and can be embedded in C^d through the equation \sum_{i = 1}^d {z_i^2} = ε^2. We discuss the Green's function with a source at a point on the S^{d-1} zero section of TS^{d-1}. Its calculation is complicated by mixing between different harmonics with the same SO(d) quantum numbers due to the explicit breaking by the ε-deformation of the U(1) symmetry that rotates z_i by a phase. A similar mixing affects the spectrum of normal modes of warped deformed conifolds that appear in gauge/gravity duality. We solve the mixing problem numerically to determine certain bound state spectra in various representations of SO(d) for the d=4 and d=5 examples.

The Perfect Atom: Bound States of Supersymmetric Quantum Electrodynamics

We study hydrogen-like atoms in N=1 supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics with an electronic and a muonic family. These atoms are bound states of an anti-muon and an electron or their superpartners. The exchange of a photino converts different bound states into each other. We determine the energy eigenstates and calculate the spectrum to fourth order in the fine structure constant. A difference between these perfect atoms and non-supersymmetric ones is the absence of hyperfine structure. We organize the eigenstates into super multiplets of the underlying symmetry algebra.

Charges of Monopole Operators in Chern-Simons Yang-Mills Theory

We calculate the non-abelian R-charges of BPS monopole operators in three-dimensional gauge theories with N=3 supersymmetry. This class of models includes ABJM theory, the proposed gauge theory dual of M-theory on AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k, as a special case. In the UV limit of the N=3 theories the Yang-Mills coupling becomes weak and the monopole operators are described by classical backgrounds. This allows us to find their SU(2)_R charges in a one-loop computation which by virtue of the non-renormalization of non-abelian R-charges yields the exact result for any value of the coupling. The spectrum of SU(2)_R charges is found by quantizing the SU(2)/U(1) collective coordinate of the BPS background, whose dynamics is that of a charged particle on a sphere with a Wess-Zumino term representing a magnetic monopole at its center. If the Wess-Zumino coefficient is h, then the smallest possible SU(2)_R representation for BPS monopole operators has spin |h|/2. We find, in agreement with earlier proposals, that h is proportional to the sum of the U(1)_R charges of all the fermion fields weighted by the effective monopole charges determined by their gauge representations. The field content of ABJM theory is such that h=0. This proves for any Chern-Simons level k the existence of monopole operators which are singlets under all global symmetries and have vanishing scaling dimensions. These operators are essential for matching the spectrum of the ABJM theory with supergravity and for the supersymmetry enhancement to N=8.

AdS_4/CFT_3 -- Squashed, Stretched and Warped

We use group theoretic methods to calculate the spectrum of short multiplets around the extremum of N=8 gauged supergravity potential which possesses N=2 supersymmetry and SU(3) global symmetry. Upon uplifting to M-theory, it describes a warped product of AdS_4 and a certain squashed and stretched 7-sphere. We find quantum numbers in agreement with those of the gauge invariant operators in the N=2 superconformal Chern-Simons theory recently proposed to be the dual of this M-theory background. This theory is obtained from the U(N)xU(N) theory through deforming the superpotential by a term quadratic in one of the superfields. To construct this model explicitly, one needs to employ monopole operators whose complete understanding is still lacking. However, for the U(2)xU(2) gauge theory we make a proposal for the form of the monopole operators which has a number of desired properties. In particular, this proposal implies enhanced symmetry of the U(2)xU(2) ABJM theory for k=1,2; it makes its similarity to and subtle difference from the BLG theory quite explicit.

Superconformal Chern-Simons Theories and AdS_4/CFT_3 Correspondence

We discuss the N=2 superspace formulation of the N=8 superconformal Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory, and of the N=6 superconformal Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena U(N)xU(N) Chern-Simons theory. In particular, we prove the full SU(4) R-symmetry of the ABJM theory. We then consider orbifold projections of this theory that give non-chiral and chiral (U(N)xU(N))^n superconformal quiver gauge theories. We argue that these theories are dual to certain AdS_4 x S^7/(Z_n x Z_k) backgrounds of M-theory. We also study a SU(3) invariant mass term in the superpotential that makes the N=8 theory flow to a N=2 superconformal gauge theory with a sextic superpotential. We conjecture that this gauge theory is dual to the U(1)_R x SU(3) invariant extremum of the N=8 gauged supergravity, which was discovered by N. Warner 25 years ago and whose uplifting to 11 dimensions was found more recently.

Interacting finite-size magnons

We explicitly construct a large class of finite-volume two-magnon string solutions moving on R x S^2. In particular, by making use of the relationship between the O(3) sigma model and sine-Gordon theory we are able to find solutions corresponding to the periodic analogues of magnon scattering and breather-like solutions. After semi-classically quantizing these solutions we invert the implicit expressions for the excitation energies in certain limits and find the corrections for the multi-magnon states. For the breather-like solutions we express the energies directly in terms of the action variable whereas for the scattering solution we express the result as a combination of corrections to the dispersion relation and to the scattering phase.

Factorized world-sheet scattering in near-flat AdS_5 x S^5

We show the factorization of the three-particle world-sheet S-matrix of AdS_5 x S^5 superstring theory in the near-flat-space limit at one loop order. This is done by computing various scattering amplitudes from Feynman diagrams in the world-sheet theory. The knowledge of certain highest weight amplitudes allows us to fix all the freedom in the three-particle S-matrix, which we argue to be constrained up to four scalar functions due to the symmetries of the model. We demonstrate that these amplitudes are given by corresponding products of the known two-particle S-matrix elements, from which it follows that the scattering of any three world-sheet excitations factorizes. This provides an explicit and direct check of the quantum integrability of string theory in near-flat AdS_5 x S^5 as it renders evidence for the existence of higher conserved charges. By computing further amplitudes we also obtain an indirect confirmation of the supersymmetries of the near-flat-space model.

Reduced sigma-model on AdS_5 x S^5: one-loop scattering amplitudes

We compute one-loop S-matrix in the reduced sigma-model which describes AdS_5 x S^5 string theory in the near-flat-space limit. The result agrees with the corresponding limit of the S-matrix in the full sigma-model, which demonstrates the consistency of the reduction at the quantum level.

Worldsheet Scattering in AdS_5 x S^5

We calculate the S-matrix in the gauge-fixed sigma-model on AdS_5 x S^5 to the leading order in perturbation theory, and analyze how supersymmetry is realized on the scattering states. A mild nonlocality of the supercharges implies that their action on multi-particle states does not follow the Leibniz rule, which is replaced by a nontrivial coproduct. The plane wave symmetry algebra is thus naturally enhanced to a Hopf algebra. The scattering matrix elements obey the classical Yang-Baxter equation modified by the existence of the coproduct. This structure mirrors that of the large 't Hooft coupling expansion of the S-matrix for the spin chain in the dual super-Yang-Mills theory.
