A Shubin pseudodifferential calculus on asymptotically conic manifolds

We present a global pseudodifferential calculus on asymptotically conic manifolds that generalizes (anisotropic versions of) Shubin's classical global pseudodifferential calculus on Euclidean space to this class of noncompact manifolds. Fully elliptic operators are shown to be Fredholm in an associated scale of Sobolev spaces, and to have parametrices in the calculus.

Cobordism invariance of the index for realizations of elliptic operators revisited

We revisit an argument due to Lesch (Topology 32 (1993), no. 3, 611-623) for proving the cobordism invariance of the index of Dirac operators on even-dimensional closed manifolds and combine this with recent work by the author (New York J. Math. 28 (2022), 705-772) to show vanishing results for the spectral flow for families of selfadjoint Fredholm realizations of elliptic operators in case the family is induced on the boundary by an elliptic operator on a compact space. This work is motivated by studying the behavior of the index of realizations of elliptic operators under cobordisms of statified manifolds.

Extensions of symmetric operators that are invariant under scaling and applications to indicial operators

Indicial operators are model operators associated to an elliptic differential operator near a corner singularity on a stratified manifold. These model operators are defined on generalized tangent cone configurations and exhibit a natural scaling invariance property with respect to dilations of the radial variable. In this paper we discuss extensions of symmetric indicial operators from a functional analytic point of view. In the first, purely abstract part of this paper, we consider a general unbounded symmetric operator that exhibits invariance with respect to an abstract scaling action on a Hilbert space, and we describe its extensions in terms of generalized eigenspaces of the infinitesimal generator of this action. Among others, we obtain a Green formula for the adjoint pairing, an algebraic formula for the signature, and in the semibounded case explicit descriptions of the Friedrichs and Krein extensions. In the second part we consider differential operators of Fuchs type on the half axis with unbounded operator coefficients that are invariant under dilation, and show that under suitable ellipticity assumptions on the indicial family these operators fit into the abstract framework of the first part, which in this case furnishes a description of extensions in terms of polyhomogeneous asymptotic expansions. We also obtain an analytic formula for the signature of the adjoint pairing in terms of the spectral flow of the indicial family for such operators.

An explicit third-order one-step method for autonomous scalar initial value problems of first order based on adaptive quadratic Taylor approximation

We present an explicit 1-step numerical method of third order that is error-free on autonomous scalar Riccati equations such as the logistic equation. The method replaces the differential equation by its quadratic Taylor polynomial in each step and utilizes the exact solution of that equation for the calculation of the next approximation.

Elliptic complexes of first-order cone operators: ideal boundary conditions

The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed description of the spaces that can be specified as $L^2$ domains for the operators of a first order elliptic complex on a compact manifold with conical singularities. This entails an analysis of the nature of the minimal domain and of a complementary space in the maximal domain of each of the operators. The key technical result is the nondegeneracy of a certain pairing of cohomology classes associated with the indicial complex. It is further proved that the set of choices of domains leading to Hilbert complexes in the sense of Brüning and Lesch form a variety, as well as a theorem establishing a necessary and sufficient condition for the operator in a given degree to map its maximal domain into the minimal domain of the next operator.

The Friedrichs extension for elliptic wedge operators of second order

The paper provides an explicit description of the structure of the domain of the Friedrichs extension of a second order semibounded elliptic wedge operator, initially defined on smooth functions or sections with compact support away from the boundary, under some mild assumptions on the indicial and normal families.

Boundary value problems for elliptic wedge operators: the first order case

This note is a description of some of the results obtained by the authors in connection with the problem in the title. These, discussed following a summary of background material concerning wedge differential operators, consist of the notion of trace bundle, an extension of the Douglis-Nirenberg calculus to handle spaces of anisotropic varying regularity and associated pseudodifferential operators, and boundary value problems proper, the latter in the first order case. The concepts concerning the main results are illustrated with simple examples.

A calculus of abstract edge pseudodifferential operators of type $\varrho,δ$

In this paper we expand on B.-W. Schulze's abstract edge pseudodifferential calculus and introduce a larger class of operators that is modeled on Hörmander's $\varrho,δ$ calculus, where $0 \leq δ< \varrho \leq 1$. This expansion is motivated by recent work on boundary value problems for elliptic wedge operators with variable indicial roots by G. Mendoza and the author, where operators of type $1,δ$ for $0 < δ< 1$ appear naturally. Some of the results of this paper also represent improvements over the existing literature on the standard abstract edge calculus of operators of type $1,0$, such as trace class mapping properties of operators in abstract wedge Sobolev spaces. The presentation in this paper is largely self-contained to allow for an independent reading.

Boundary value problems for first order elliptic wedge operators

We develop an elliptic theory based in $L^2$ of boundary value problems for general wedge differential operators of first order under only mild assumptions on the boundary spectrum. In particular, we do not require the indicial roots to be constant along the base of the boundary fibration. Our theory includes as a special case the classical theory of elliptic boundary value problems for first order operators with and without the Shapiro-Lopatinskii condition, and can be thought of as a natural extension of that theory to the geometrically and analytically relevant class of wedge operators. Wedge operators arise in the global analysis on manifolds with incomplete edge singularities. Our theory settles, in the first order case, the long-standing open problem to develop a robust elliptic theory of boundary value problems for such operators.

Elliptic systems of variable order

The general theory of boundary value problems for linear elliptic wedge operators (on smooth manifolds with boundary) leads naturally, even in the scalar case, to the need to consider vector bundles over the boundary together with general smooth fiberwise multiplicative group actions. These actions, essentially trivial (and therefore invisible) in the case of regular boundary value problems, are intimately connected with what passes for Poisson and trace operators, and to pseudodifferential boundary conditions in the more general situation. Here the part of the theory pertaining pseudodifferential operators is presented in its entirety. The symbols for the latter operators are defined with the aid of an intertwining of the actions. Also presented here are the ancillary Sobolev spaces, an index theorem for the elliptic elements of the pseudodifferential calculus, and the essential ingredients of the APS boundary condition in the more general theory.

The kernel bundle of a holomorphic Fredholm family

Let $\Y$ be a smooth connected manifold, $Σ\subset\C$ an open set and $(σ,y)\to\scrP_y(σ)$ a family of unbounded Fredholm operators $D\subset H_1\to H_2$ of index 0 depending smoothly on $(y,σ)\in \Y\times Σ$ and holomorphically on $σ$. We show how to associate to $\scrP$, under mild hypotheses, a smooth vector bundle $\kerb\to\Y$ whose fiber over a given $y\in \Y$ consists of classes, modulo holomorphic elements, of meromorphic elements $ϕ$ with $\scrP_yϕ$ holomorphic. As applications we give two examples relevant in the general theory of boundary value problems for elliptic wedge operators.

On the closure of elliptic wedge operators

We prove a semi-Fredholm theorem for the minimal extension of elliptic operators on manifolds with wedge singularities and give, under suitable assumptions, a full asymptotic expansion of the trace of the resolvent.

Trace expansions for elliptic cone operators with stationary domains

We analyze the behavior of the trace of the resolvent of an elliptic cone differential operator as the spectral parameter tends to infinity. The resolvent splits into two components, one associated with the minimal extension of the operator, and another, of finite rank, depending on the particular choice of domain. We give a full asymptotic expansion of the first component and expand the component of finite rank in the case where the domain is stationary. The results make use, and develop further, our previous investigations on the analytic and geometric structure of the resolvent. The analysis of nonstationary domains, considerably more intricate, is pursued elsewhere.

Dynamics on Grassmannians and resolvents of cone operators

The paper proves the existence and elucidates the structure of the asymptotic expansion of the trace of the resolvent of a closed extension of a general elliptic cone operator on a compact manifold with boundary as the spectral parameter tends to infinity. The hypotheses involve only minimal conditions on the symbols of the operator. The results combine previous investigations by the authors on the subject with an analysis of the asymptotics of a family of projections related to the domain. This entails a fairly detailed study of the dynamics of a flow on the Grassmannian of domains.

On the expansion of the resolvent for elliptic boundary contact problems

Let $A$ be an elliptic operator on a compact manifold with boundary $M$, and let $\wp : \partial\M \to Y$ be a covering map, where $Y$ is a closed manifold. Let $A_C$ be a realization of $A$ subject to a coupling condition $C$ that is elliptic with parameter in the sector $Λ$. By a coupling condition we mean a nonlocal boundary condition that respects the covering structure of the boundary. We prove that the resolvent trace $\Tr_{L^2} (A_C-λ)^{-N}$ for $N$ sufficiently large has a complete asymptotic expansion as $|λ| \to \infty$, $λ\in Λ$. In particular, the heat trace $\Tr_{L^2}e^{-tA_C}$ has a complete asymptotic expansion as $t \to 0^+$, and the $ζ$-function has a meromorphic extension to $\C$.
