Multi-year Ground-Based Survey Photometry of Active Comet 103P/Hartley 2 and Centaur (2060) Chiron: A Tale of Two Comets in the Pre-LSST Era

Comets and Centaurs trace the evolution of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) into the inner solar system. Their activity reflects the interplay between volatile sublimation, dust dynamics, and ring scattering. Yet the long-term behavior of individual objects is less constrained. To probe this evolutionary transition, we use wide-field survey photometry from the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, Zwicky Transient Facility, and Las Cumbres Observatory observations of the Jupiter-family comet (JFC) 103P/Hartley 2 during its 2023/24 apparition, and the Centaur (2060) Chiron across 2020-2025, including its 2021 outburst. For 103P, heliocentric activity slopes are asymmetric about perihelion, with a steep inbound index ($n_{r,\rm pre}=-3.48\pm0.08$) and flatter outbound value ($n_{r,\rm post}=-1.16\pm0.04$), consistent with enhanced relative dust contribution post-perihelion. Reduced brightness versus prior apparitions matches reported secular fading trends. Dust mass-loss rates are $\sim4$-16 kg s$^{-1}$ for assumed grain properties. Colors exhibit a blueward trend near perihelion, consistent with enhanced gas contamination of the $g$-band, with possible phase-dependent scattering. A periodogram recovers a $\sim18.7$ hr activity-linked period near perihelion. For Chiron, subtracting a quiescent baseline reveals exponential decay from the 2021 outburst on a $\sim1.4$ yr timescale. Seasonal phase curves flatten from $\beta_o=0.150\pm0.034$ mag deg$^{-1}$ in 2021 to $\lesssim0.09$ mag deg$^{-1}$ by 2023-2025, converging with quiescent behavior. Broad-band colors remain unchanged at ATLAS ($c-o$)=0.22$\pm$0.09 mag. This extended activity suggests a new epoch of persistent, low-level activity and/or evolving ring-scattering. These objects bracket the TNO-to-JFC evolutionary sequence, with 103P near the volatile-depleted end, and Chiron still volatile-rich and capable of episodic activity.

Tracking the Activity of the Interstellar Object 3I/ATLAS through its Perihelion

In order to facilitate interplanetary spacecraft observationsof 3I/ATLAS, we have monitored and predicted the optical properties of its coma using both ground and space-based observations. Here, we describe how the data from space-based solar coronagraphs and the PUNCH mission enabled tracking of 3I/ATLAS's optical magnitude throughout its entire perihelion passage, including the period between October 8 and 30, 2025, when it was not visible from Earth.

Time-dependent framework for energy and charge currents in nanoscale systems

The calculation of time-dependent charge and energy currents in nanoscale systems is a challenging task. Nevertheless it is crucial for gaining a deep understanding of the relevant processes at the nanoscale. We extend the auxiliary-mode approach for time-dependent charge transport to allow for the calculation of energy currents for arbitrary time-dependencies. We apply the approach to two illustrative examples, a single-level system and a benzene ring, demonstrating its usefulness for a wide-range of problems beyond simple toy models, such as molecular devices.

Enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit in polycrystalline carbon nanostructures

Grain boundaries are commonly observed in carbon nanostructures, but their influence on thermal and electric properties are still not completely understood. Using a combined approach of density functional tight-binding theory and non-equilibrium Green functions we investigate electron and phonon transport in carbon based systems. In this work, quantum transport and thermoelectric properties are summarized for graphene sheets, graphene nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes with a variety of grain boundary types in a wide temperature range. Motivated by previous findings that disorder scatters phonons more effectively than electrons, a significant improvement in the thermoelectric performance for polycrystalline systems is expected. As the effect is marginally sensitive to the grain boundary type, we demonstrate that grain boundaries are a viable tool to greatly enhance the figure of merit, paving the way for the design of new thermoelectric materials.

Combined effect of strain and defects on the conductance of graphene nanoribbons

We investigate the combined influence of structural defects and uniaxial longitudinal strain on the electronic transport properties of armchair graphene nanoribbons using the numerical approach based on the semiempirical tight-binding model, the Landauer formalism, and the recursion method for Green functions. We calculate the conductance of graphene nanoribbons in the quantum coherent regime with different types and concentrations of defects. Further, we apply uniform planar tension to the nonideal graphene ribbons with randomly distributed and oriented single and double vacancies and Stone-Wales defects. Since transport characteristics of graphene nanoribbons are found to be very sensitive to edge termination and aspect ratio, and it has been shown that energy gaps can emerge under critical strain; the interplay of both effects needs to be studied. We show that band gap engineering using strain is still possible for nonideal armchair ribbons with a small defect concentration, as the oscillatory behavior of the gap is preserved.

Simultaneous optical speckle masking and NIR adaptive optics imaging of the 126 mas Herbig Ae/Be binary star NX Puppis

We present simultaneous optical and near-infrared high angular resolution observations of the close Herbig Ae/Be binary star NX Pup which is associated with cometary globule~1. The reconstructed images have a diffraction--limited resolution of 62 mas in V, 75 mas in R (speckle masking reconstruction), and 115 mas in H, 156 mas in K (adaptive optics + post--processing). Compared to previous results we were able to derive better estimates on spectral type and luminosity and hence put better constraints on the evolutionary status (mass & age) of NX Pup A and B: with NX Pup A of spectral type F0-F2 we estimate the spectral type of NX Pup B in the range F7-G4, masses of 2 M$_\odot$ and 1.6--1.9 M$_\odot$, respectively, and an age of 3--5~Myr for both stars. We discuss the implication of the new age determination on the physical relation between NX Pup and the cometary globule. The dynamical lifetime of $\approx$ 10$^6$ yr for cometary globule 1 suggests that cometary globule 1 and the nearby cometary globule 2 represent transient phenomena and are left overs of a larger molecular cloud which in turn was the parental cloud of NX~Pup A and B and finally got dispersed by photoevaporation. The IR excess of NX Pup A can be modeled by a viscous accretion disk, which is cut off at $\approx$ 20 AU from the star. NX Pup B has a smaller IR excess which indicates that there is less circumstellar material present than around the primary.

The outburst of the T Tauri star EX Lupi in 1994

We have observed an outburst of the T Tauri star EX Lup in March 1994. We present both photometric (BVR) and spectroscopic (low and medium resolution) observations carried out during the decline after outburst. The star appears much bluer during outburst due to an increased emission of a hot continuum. This is accompanied by a strong increase of the veiling of photospheric lines. We observe inverse P Cygni profiles of many emission lines over a large brightness range of EX Lup. We briefly discuss these features towards the model of magnetospherically supported accretion of disk material.
