Prolongation and Killing two-tensors

We present a systematic prolongation procedure and its implementation for Killing two-tensors. We use the resulting machinery to elucidate the natural quadratic mapping from Killing fields to Killing two-tensors in general and on irreducible locally symmetric spaces of compact type.

Locally conformally homogeneous Lorentzian spaces

We study locally conformally homogeneous Lorentzian manifolds of dimension at least $3$, admitting an essential pseudo-group of local conformal transformations. Generalizing a recent result of Alekseevsky and Galaev, we show that any such manifold $(M,g)$ is either conformally flat, or locally conformally equivalent to a homogeneous plane wave. When the manifold is non-conformally flat, we show the existence of a codimension-one lightlike foliation of Heisenberg type, which leads to the plane wave structure. Our approach relies on tools from Gromov's theory of rigid transformations. Finally, we observe that the plane wave metric in the conformal class coincides with the Penrose limit of $(M,g)$ along some null geodesic.

Holonomy in pseudo-Hermitian geometry

We study the holonomy that is associated to a sub-Riemannian structure defined on the kernel of a global contact form. This includes the holonomy of Schouten's horizontal connection as well as of the adapted connection, both canonical invariants of the structure. Under a condition on the torsion of the structure, we show that they are either equal or that the former is a codimension one normal subgroup of the latter. Furthermore, we establish a close relation to Riemannian holonomy, which yields a complete holonomy classification in the torsion-free case. For the main result we focus on the special case of pseudo-Hermitian structures and give a classification of holonomy algebras for both the Schouten and the adapted connection. Based on this, we derive a classification of symmetric sub-Riemannian structures and of of those holonomy groups that admit parallel spinors. Finally we exhibit a relation between locally symmetric sub-Riemannian contact structures and locally homogeneous Riemannian structures.

Optical geometries

We study the notion of optical geometry, defined to be a Lorentzian manifold equipped with a null line distribution, from the perspective of intrinsic torsion. This is an instance of a non-integrable version of holonomy reduction in Lorentzian geometry. These generate congruences of null curves, which play an important rôle in general relativity. Conformal properties of these are investigated. We also extend this concept to generalised optical geometries as introduced by Robinson and Trautman.

Fundamental regions for non-isometric group actions

We generalise results about isometric group actions on metric spaces and their fundamental regions to the context of merely continuous group actions. In particular, we obtain results that yield the relative compactness of a fundamental region for a cocompact group action. As a consequence, we obtain a criterion for a cocompact cyclic group of semi-Riemannian homotheties to be inessential.

The range of a connection and a Calabi operator for Lorentzian locally symmetric spaces

For semi-Riemannian manifolds of constant sectional curvature, the Calabi operator is a second order linear differential operator that provides local integrability conditions for the range of the Killing operator. In this article, extending earlier results in the Riemannian setting, we identify the Lorentzian locally symmetric spaces on which the Calabi operator is sufficient to identify the range of the Killing operator. Specifically, this is always the case for indecomposable spaces and we identify precisely those products for which it fails. Our method is quite general in that we firstly develop criteria to be in the range of a connection, viewed as a linear differential operator. Then we ascertain how these criteria apply in the case of what we call the Killing connection.

Lorentzian homogeneous structures with indecomposable holonomy

For a Lorentzian homogeneous space, we study how algebraic conditions on the isotropy group affect the geometry and curvature of the homogeneous space. More specifically, we prove that a Lorentzian locally homogeneous space is locally isometric to a plane wave if it admits an Ambrose--Singer connection with indecomposable, non-irreducible holonomy. This generalises several existing results that require a certain algebraic type of the torsion of the Ambrose--Singer connection and moreover is in analogy to the fact that a Lorentzian homogeneous space with irreducible isotropy has constant sectional curvature. In addition, we prove results about Lorentzian connections with parallel torsion and for 2-symmetric connections.

A Calabi operator for Riemannian locally symmetric spaces

On a Riemannian manifold of constant curvature, the Calabi operator is a second order linear differential operator that provides local integrability conditions for the range of the Killing operator. We generalise this operator to provide linear second order local integrability conditions on Riemannian locally symmetric spaces, whenever this is possible. Specifically, we show that this generalised operator always works in the irreducible case and we identify precisely those products for which it fails.

Compact Locally Conformally Pseudo-Kähler Manifolds with Essential Conformal Transformations

A conformal transformation of a semi-Riemannian manifold is essential if there is no conformally equivalent metric for which it is an isometry. For Riemannian manifolds the existence of an essential conformal transformation forces the manifold to be conformally flat. This is false for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, however compact examples of conformally curved manifolds with essential conformal transformation are scarce. Here we give examples of compact conformal manifolds in signature $(4n+2k,4n+2\ell)$ with essential conformal transformations that are locally conformally pseudo-Kähler and not conformally flat, where $n\ge 1$, $k, \ell \ge 0$. The corresponding local pseudo-Kähler metrics obtained by a local conformal rescaling are Ricci-flat.

Conformal Killing tensors and their Killing scales

We address the problem of how to characterise when a rank-two conformal Killing tensor is the trace-free part of a Killing tensor for a metric in the conformal class. We call such a metric a Killing scale. Our approach is via differential prolongation using conformally invariant tractor calculus. First, we show that there is a useful partial prolongation of the conformal Killing equation to a simplified equation for sections of some tractor bundle. We then use this partial prolongation to provide such an invariant characterisation in terms of the scale tractor and this partial prolongation. This captures invariantly the relevant Bertrand--Darboux equation. We show that Einstein Killing scales have a special place in the theory. On conformally flat manifolds, we give the full prolongation of the conformally Killing equation to a conformally invariant connection on a tractor bundle. Using this, we provide a characterisation of (non-scalar flat) Einstein Killing scales by an algebraic equation for the scale tractors corresponding to such metrics. This also provides an algebraic description of the linear subspace of conformal Killing tensors that are compatible with a given Einstein Killing scale. For completeness and to introduce the main ideas, we also study analogous questions for conformal Killing vectors.

Killing vector fields on semi-Riemannian product manifolds

Hano's theorem states that the space of Killing vector fields of a complete simply connected Riemannian manifold is isomorphic to the direct sum of the Killing vector fields of the factors in its de Rham decomposition. We prove a generalisation of this theorem to manifolds with indefinite metrics that requires an assumption on the factors, and show by example why this assumption is needed.

Conformal transformations of Cahen-Wallach spaces

We study conformal transformations of indecomposable Lorentzian symmetric spaces of non-constant sectional curvature, the so-called Cahen-Wallach spaces. When a Cahen-Wallach space is conformally curved, its conformal transformations are homotheties. Using this we show that a conformal transformation of a conformally curved Cahen-Wallach space is essential if and only if it has a fixed point. Then we explore the possibility of properly discontinuous groups of conformal transformations acting with a compact orbit space on a conformally curved Cahen-Wallach space. We show that any such group cannot centralise an essential homothety and that for Cahen-Wallach spaces of imaginary type must be contained within the isometries.

Almost Robinson geometries

We investigate the geometry of almost Robinson manifolds, Lorentzian analogues of almost Hermitian manifolds, defined by Nurowski and Trautman as Lorentzian manifolds of even dimension equipped with a totally null complex distribution of maximal rank. Associated to such a structure, there is a congruence of null curves, which, in dimension four, is geodesic and non-shearing if and only if the complex distribution is involutive. Under suitable conditions, the distribution gives rise to an almost Cauchy-Riemann structure on the leaf space of the congruence. We give a comprehensive classification of such manifolds on the basis of their intrinsic torsion. This includes an investigation of the relation between an almost Robinson structure and the geometric properties of the leaf space of its congruence. We also obtain conformally invariant properties of such a structure, and we finally study an analogue of so-called generalised optical geometries as introduced by Robinson and Trautman.

Completeness of certain compact Lorentzian locally symmetric spaces

We show that a compact Lorentzian locally symmetric space is geodesically complete if the Lorentzian factor in the local de Rham-Wu decomposition is of Cahen-Wallach type or if the maximal flat factor is one-dimensional and time-like. Our proof uses a recent result by Mehidi and Zeghib and an earlier result by Romero and Sánchez.

Geometry and holonomy of indecomposable cones

We study the geometry and holonomy of semi-Riemannian, time-like metric cones that are indecomposable, i.e., which do not admit a local decomposition into a semi-Riemannian product. This includes irreducible cones, for which the holonomy can be classified, as well as non irreducible cones. The latter admit a parallel distribution of null $k$-planes, and we study the cases $k=1$ and $k=2$ in detail. In these cases, i.e., when the cone admits a distribution of parallel null tangent lines or planes, we give structure theorems about the base manifold. Moreover, in the case $k=1$ and when the base manifold is Lorentzian, we derive a description of the cone holonomy. This result is obtained by a computation of certain cocycles of indecomposable subalgebras in $\mathfrak{so}(1,n-1)$.

Semi-Riemannian cones

Due to a result by Gallot a Riemannian cone over a complete Riemannian manifold is either flat or has an irreducible holonomy representation. This is false in general for indefinite cones but the structures induced on the cone by holonomy invariant subspaces can be used to study the geometry on the base of the cone. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first we will give a survey of general results about semi-Riemannian cones with non irreducible holonomy representation and then, as the main result, we will derive improved versions of these general statements in the case when the cone admits a parallel vector field. We will show that if the base manifold is complete and the fibre of the cone and the parallel vector field have the same causal character, then the cone is flat, and that otherwise, the base manifold admits a certain global warped product structure. We will use these results to give a new proof of the classification results for Riemannian manifolds with imaginary Killing spinors and Lorentzian manifolds with real Killing spinors which are due to Baum and Bohle.

Conformal properties of indefinite bi-invariant metrics

An indecomposable Lie group with Riemannian bi-invariant metric is always simple and hence Einstein. For indefinite metrics this is no longer true, not even for simple Lie groups. We study the question of whether a semi-Riemannian bi-invariant metric is conformal to an Einstein metric. We obtain results for all three cases in the structure theorem by Medina and Revoy for indecomposable metric Lie algebras: the case of simple Lie algebras, and the cases of double extensions of metric Lie algebras by $\mathbb{R}$ or a simple Lie algebra. Simple Lie algebras are conformally Einstein precisely when they are Einstein, or when equal to $\mathfrak{sl}_2\mathbb{C}$ and conformally flat. Double extensions of metric Lie algebras by simple Lie algebras of rank greater than one are never conformally Einstein, and neither are double extensions of Lorentzian oscillator algebras, whereas the oscillator algebras themselves are conformally Einstein. Our results give a complete answer to the question of which metric Lie algebras in Lorentzian signature and in signature (2,n-2) are conformally Einstein.

Invariant prolongation of the Killing tensor equation

The Killing tensor equation is a first order differential equation on symmetric covariant tensors that generalises to higher rank the usual Killing vector equation on Riemannian manifolds. We view this more generally as an equation on any manifold equipped with an affine connection, and in this setting derive its prolongation to a linear connection. This connection has the property that parallel sections are in 1-1 correspondence with solutions of the Killing equation. Moreover this connection is projectively invariant and is derived entirely using the projectively invariant tractor calculus which reveals also further invariant structures linked to the prolongation.
