Ferroelectric order versus metallicity in Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$TiO$_{3-δ}$ ($x=0.009$)

We report on a thermal-expansion study of the ferroelectric phase transition in insulating Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$TiO$_3$ ($x=0.009$) and its evolution upon increasing charge-carrier concentration up to $n\simeq 60 \times 10^{19}$cm$^{-3}$. Although electric polarization is screened by mobile charge carriers, we find clear signatures of the ferroelectric phase transition in the thermal-expansion coefficient $α$ of the weakly doped metallic samples. Upon increasing $n$, the transition temperature $T_\mathrm{C}(n)$ and the magnitude of the anomalies in $α$ rapidly decrease up to a threshold carrier density $n^\star$ above which broadened anomalies remain present. There is no indication for a sign change of $α$ as is expected for a pressure-dependent quantum phase transition with $n$ as the control parameter. Thus, the ferroelectriclike transition is either continuously fading away or it transforms to another low-temperature phase above $n^\star$, but this change hardly affects the temperature-dependent $α(T)$ data.

Charge transport in oxygen-deficient EuTiO$_3$: the emerging picture of dilute metallicity in quantum-paraelectric perovskite oxides

We report on a study of charge transport in EuTiO$_{3-δ}$ single crystals with carrier density tuned across several orders of magnitude. Comparing this system with other quasi-cubic perovskites, in particular strontium titanate, we draw a comprehensive picture of metal-insulator transition and dilute metallicity in this $AB$O$_3$ family. Because of a lower electric permittivity, the metal-insulator transition in EuTiO$_{3-δ}$ occurs at higher carrier densities compared to SrTiO$_3$. At low temperature, a distinct $T^2$ resistivity is visible. Its prefactor $A$ smoothly decreases with increasing carrier concentration in a similar manner in three different perovskites. Our results draw a comprehensive picture of charge transport in doped quantum paraelectrics.

Interplay of electronic and spin degrees in ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$: anomalous softening of magnon gap and stiffness

The magnon dispersion of ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ was studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals as function of temperature. Even at low temperature the magnon modes exhibit substantial broadening pointing to strong interaction with charge carriers. We find an anomalous temperature dependence of both the magnon gap and the magnon stiffness, which soften upon cooling in the ferromagnetic phase. Both effects trace the temperature dependence of the anomalous Hall effect. We argue that these results show that Weyl points and the anomalous Hall effect can directly influence the spin dynamics in metallic ferromagnets.

Domain dynamics in LiCuVO$_4$: Evidence for polarized nanoregions

LiCuVO$_4$ is a model system of a 1D spin-1/2 chain that enters a planar spin-spiral ground state below its Néel temperature of 2.4 K due to competing nearest and next nearest neighbor interactions. The spin-spiral state is multiferroic with an electric polarization along the a axis which has been proposed to be caused purely by the spin supercurrent mechanism. With external magnetic fields in c direction T$_N$ can be suppressed down to 0 K at 7.4 T. Here we report dynamical measurements of the polarization from P(E)-hysteresis loops, magnetic field dependent pyro-current and non-linear dielectric spectroscopy as well as thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements at very low temperatures. The multiferroic transition is accompanied by strong anomalies in the thermal expansion and magnetostriction coefficients and we find slow switching times of electric domain reversal. Both observations suggest a sizable magnetoelastic coupling in LiCuVO$_4$. By analyzing the non-linear polarization dynamics we derive domain sizes in the nm range that are probably caused by Li defects.

Nematic Superconductivity in Cu1.5(PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6

After the discovery of nematic topological superconductivity in CuxBi2Se3, carrier-doped topological insulators are established as a fertile ground for topological superconductors. The superconductor Cu1.5(PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6 (CPSBS) contains Bi2Se3 blocks as a constitutional unit, but its superconducting gap appears to have nodes [S. Sasaki et al., Phys. Rev. B 90, 220504 (2014)], which is in contrast to the fully-opened gap in CuxBi2Se3 and the relation between the two superconductors remained an open question. Here we report our observation of clear two-fold symmetry in the in-plane magnetic-field-direction dependencies of the upper critical field and of the specific heat of CPSBS, where the direction of the maxima, which is different from that in CuxBi2Se3, indicates that the gap nodes are located in the mirror plane of the crystal lattice. This means that the topological nematic state with mirror-symmetry-protected nodes is realized in CPSBS.

Quantum criticality in the spin-${1}/{2}$ Heisenberg chain system copper pyrazine dinitrate

The magnetic insulator copper pyrazine dinitrate comprises antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains that are well described by the exactly solvable one-dimensional Heisenberg model, providing a unique opportunity for a quantitative comparison between theory and experiment. Here, we investigate its thermodynamic properties with a particular focus on the field-induced quantum phase transition. Thermal expansion, magnetostriction, specific heat, magnetization and magnetocaloric measurements are found to be in excellent agreement with predictions from exact Bethe-Ansatz results as well as from effective field theory. Close to the critical field, thermodynamics obeys the expected quantum critical scaling behavior, and, in particular, the magnetocaloric effect and the Grüneisen parameters diverge in a characteristic manner. Apart from realizing a paradigm of quantum criticality, our study instructively illustrates fundamental principles of quantum critical thermodynamics.

A ferroelectric quantum phase transition inside the superconducting dome of Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_{3-δ}$

SrTiO$_{3}$, a quantum paraelectric, becomes a metal with a superconducting instability after removal of an extremely small number of oxygen atoms. It turns into a ferroelectric upon substitution of a tiny fraction of strontium atoms with calcium. The two orders may be accidental neighbors or intimately connected, as in the picture of quantum critical ferroelectricity. Here, we show that in Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_{3-δ}$ ($0.002<x<0.009$, $δ<0.001$) the ferroelectric order coexists with dilute metallicity and its superconducting instability in a finite window of doping. At a critical carrier density, which scales with the Ca content, a quantum phase transition destroys the ferroelectric order. We detect an upturn in the normal-state scattering and a significant modification of the superconducting dome in the vicinity of this quantum phase transition. The enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature with calcium substitution documents the role played by ferroelectric vicinity in the precocious emergence of superconductivity in this system, restricting possible theoretical scenarios for pairing.

Hysteresis and Relaxation Effects in the Spin-Ice Compound Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ studied by Heat Transport

The low-temperature thermal conductivity $κ$ of the spin-ice compound Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ shows pronounced hysteresis as a function of magnetic field. Here, we investigate how these hysteresis effects depend on temperature, the magnetic-field direction, the rate of magnetic-field change, and on the direction of the heat current. In addition, the time-dependent relaxation of the heat conductivity is investigated. These measurements yield information about possible equilibrium states and reveal that in the low-field and low-temperature region extremely slow relaxation processes occur.

Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg S=5/2 spin chain compound SrMn$_2$V$_2$O$_8$

Large single crystals of the new compound SrMn$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ have been grown by the floating-zone method. This transition-metal based oxide is isostructural to SrNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, described by the tetragonal space group $I4_1cd$. Magnetic properties were investigated by means of susceptibility, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. The title compound behaves like a one-dimensional magnetic system above the ordering temperature ($T_N$ = 43 K). The magnetic ground state can be described as a classical long-range ordered antiferromagnet with weak anisotropy.

Spin-spin correlations of the spin-ladder compound (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ measured by magnetostriction and comparison to Quantum Monte Carlo results

Magnetostriction and thermal expansion of the spin-ladder compound piperidinium copper bromide (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ are analyzed in detail. We find perfect agreement between experiments and the theory of a two-leg spin ladder Hamiltonian for more than a decade in temperature and in a wide range of magnetic fields. Relating the magnetostriction along different crystallographic directions to two static spin-spin correlation functions, which we compute with Quantum Monte Carlo, allows us to reconstruct the magnetoelastic couplings of (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$. We especially focus on the quantum critical behavior near the two critical magnetic fields $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$, which is characterized by strong singularities rooted in the low dimensionality of the critical spin-system. Extending our discussion in Lorenz et al [Phys. Rev. Lett., 100, 067208 (2008)], we show explicitly that the thermal expansion near the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ is quantitatively described by a parameter-free theory of one-dimensional, non-relativistic Fermions. We also point out that there exists a singular quantum critical correction to the elastic moduli. This correction is proportional to the magnetic susceptibility $χ$ which diverges as $χ\sim 1/\sqrt{T}$ at the critical fields and thus leads to a strong softening of the crystal.

Intersite 4p-3d hybridization in cobalt oxides: a resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy study

We report on strong dipole transitions to 3d orbitals of neighboring Co atoms in the Co 1s x-ray absorption pre-edge. They are revealed by applying high-resolution resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) to compounds containing CoO6 clusters. When contrasted to quadrupole local 1s3d excitations, these non-local 1s3d transitions are identified by their energy dispersion and angular dependence, their sensitivity to second-shell effects (i.e. the connection mode of the CoO6 octahedra and the bond lengths), and an upwards energy shift of 2.5 eV due to the poorer screening of the core hole. The experiment reveals that the intensity of the non-local transitions gauges the oxygen-mediated 4p-O-3d intersite hybridization. We propose a revised interpretation of the pre-edges of transition metal compounds. Detailed analysis of these new features in the pre-edge offers a unique insight in the oxygen mediated metal-metal interactions in transition metal-based systems, which is a crucial aspect in orbital ordering and related electronic and magnetic properties. In addition, the exceptional resolving power of the present 1s2p RXES experiment allows us to demonstrate the coherent second-order nature of the underlying scattering process.
