General Analysis of U-Spin Breaking in B Decays

We analyse the breaking of U-spin on a group theoretical basis. Due to the simple behaviour of the weak effective hamiltonian under U-spin and the unique structure of the breaking terms such a group theoretical analysis leads to a manageable number of parameters. Several applications are discussed, including the decays B -> J/psi K and B -> D K.

Complete Michel Parameter Analysis of inclusive semileptonic b \to c transition

We perform a complete "Michel parameter" analysis of all possible helicity structures which can appear in the process $B \to X_c \ell \barν_\ell$. We take into account the full set of operators parametrizing the effective Hamiltonian and include the complete one-loop QCD corrections as well as the non-perturbative contributions. The moments of the leptonic energy as well as the combined moments of the hadronic energy and hadronic invariant mass are calculated including the non-standard contributions.

Is there a non-Standard-Model contribution in non-leptonic b -> s decays?

Precision measurements of branching fractions and CP asymmetries in non-leptonic b -> s decays reveal certain "puzzles" when compared with Standard Model expectations based on a global fit of the CKM triangle and general theoretical expectations. Without reference to a particular model, we investigate to what extent the (small) discrepancies observed in (B -> J/psi K), (B -> phi K) and (B -> K pi) may constrain new physics in (b -> s q qbar) operators. In particular, we compare on a quantitative level the relative impact of different quark flavours q=c,s,u,d.

Precision Physics with B^0_s -> J/psi phi at the LHC: The Quest for New Physics

CP-violating effects in the time-dependent angular distribution of the B^0_s -> J/psi[-> ell^+ ell^-] phi[-> K^+K^-] decay products play a key role for the search of new physics. The hadronic Standard-Model uncertainties are related to doubly Cabibbo-suppressed penguin contributions and are usually assumed to be negligibly small. In view of recent results from the Tevatron and the quickly approaching start of the data taking at the LHC, we have a critical look at the impact of these terms, which could be enhanced through long-distance QCD phenomena, and explore the associated uncertainty for the measurement of the CP-violating B^0_s-\bar B^0_s mixing phase. We point out that these effects can actually be controlled by means of an analysis of the time-dependent angular distribution of the B^0_s -> J/psi[-> ell^+ ell^-] \bar K^{*0}[-> pi^+ K^-] decay products, and illustrate this through numerical studies. Moreover, we discuss SU(3)-breaking effects, which limit the theoretical accuracy of our method, and suggest internal consistency checks of SU(3).

The Golden Modes B^0 -> J/psi K_{S,L} in the Era of Precision Flavour Physics

The B^0 -> J/ψK_{S,L} channels are outstanding probes of CP violation. We have a detailed look at the associated Standard-Model uncertainties, which are related to doubly Cabibbo-suppressed penguin contributions, and point out that these usually neglected effects can actually be taken into account unambiguously through the CP asymmetries and the branching ratio of the B^0 -> J/ψpi^0 decay. Using the most recent B-factory measurements, we find a negative shift of the extracted value of beta, which softens the tension in the fits of the unitarity triangle. In addition, this strategy can be used to constrain a possible new-physics phase in B^0-\bar B^0 mixing. The proposed strategy is crucial to fully exploit the tremendous accuracies for the search for this kind of new physics that can be achieved at the LHC and future super-flavour factories.

Large Top Mass and Non-Linear Representation of Flavour Symmetry

We consider an effective theory (ET) approach to flavour-violating processes beyond the Standard Model (SM), where the breaking of flavour symmetry is described by spurion fields whose low-energy vacuum expectation values are identified with the SM Yukawa couplings. Insisting on canonical mass dimensions for the spurion fields, the large top-quark Yukawa coupling also implies a large expectation value for the associated spurion, which breaks part of the flavour symmetry already at the UV scale Lambda of the ET. Below that scale, flavour symmetry in the ET is represented in a non-linear way by introducing Goldstone modes for the partly broken flavour symmetry and spurion fields transforming under the residual symmetry. As a result, the dominance of certain flavour structures in rare quark decays can be understood in terms of the 1/Lambda expansion in the ET. We also discuss the generalization to 2-Higgs-doublet models with large tan(beta).

Form Factors from Light-Cone Sum Rules with B-Meson Distribution Amplitudes

New sum rules for $B\to π,K $ and $B\to ρ,K^*$ form factors are derived from the correlation functions expanded near the light-cone in terms of B-meson distribution amplitudes. The contributions of quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon components in the B meson are taken into account. Models for the B-meson three-particle distribution amplitudes are suggested, based on QCD sum rules in HQET. Employing the new light-cone sum rules we calculate the form factors at small momentum transfers, including $SU(3)_{fl}$ violation effects. The results agree with the predictions of the conventional light-cone sum rules.

Inclusive Semi-leptonic B Decays to order 1/m_b^4

We give a systematic way to compute higher orders in the 1/m_b expansion in inclusive semi-leptonic decays at tree level. We reproduce the known 1/m_b^3 terms and compute the 1/m_b^4 terms at tree level. The appearing non-perturbative parameters and the impact on the determination of V_{cb} are discussed.

$B$-Meson Distribution Amplitude from the $B\to π$ Form Factor

Employing the light-cone sum rule approach in QCD, we relate the $B$-meson distribution amplitude to the $B\to π$ form factor at zero momentum transfer. In leading order, the sum rule is converted into a simple expression for the inverse moment $λ_B$ of the distribution amplitude $ϕ_{+}^B$. Using as an input the $B\toπ$ form factor calculated from the light-cone sum rule in terms of pion distribution amplitudes, we obtain an estimate: $λ_B =460 \pm 160 $ MeV. We investigate how this result is modified by the $B$-meson three-particle distribution amplitudes.

Shape Function Effects in B -> X_c l ν_l

Owing to the fact that m_c^2 ~ m_b Λ_QCD, the endpoint region of the charged lepton energy spectrum in the inclusive decay B -> X_c l ν_l is affected by the Fermi motion of the initial-state b quark bound in the B meson. This effect is described in QCD by shape functions. Including the mass of the final-state quark, we find that a different set of operators as employed in Ref. hep-ph/0205150 is needed for a consistent matching, when incorporating the subleading contributions in B -> X_q l ν_l for both q = u and q = c. In addition, we modify the usual twist expansion in such a way that it yields a description of the lepton energy spectrum which is not just valid in the endpoint region, but over the entire phase space.

The Gold-plated mode revisited: sin(2 beta) and B^0 to J/Psi K_S in the Standard Model

We study the corrections to the determination of sin(2 beta) from the time dependent CP asymmetry of B^0 to J/Psi K_S which arise in the standard model. Although a precise prediction of these corrections is not possible we find that they are indeed extremely small, of the order of less than a per mil of the observed value. This means in turn that any deviation visible at the B factories will be a clear signal for new physics.

Flavour SU(3) Symmetry in Charmless B Decays

QCD sum rules are used to estimate the flavour SU(3)-symmetry violation in two-body B decays to pions and kaons. In the factorizable amplitudes the SU(3)-violation manifests itself in the ratio of the decay constants f_K/f_pi and in the differences between the B->K, B_s->K and B->pi form factors. These effects are calculated from the QCD two-point and light-cone sum rules, respectively, in terms of the strange quark mass and the ratio of the strange and nonstrange quark-condensate densities. Importantly, QCD sum rules predict that SU(3) breaking in the heavy-to-light form factors can be substantial and does not vanish in the heavy-quark mass limit. Furthermore, we investigate the strange-quark mass dependence of nonfactorizable effects in the B->K pi decay amplitudes. Taking into account these effects we estimate the accuracy of several SU(3)-symmetry relations between charmless B-decay amplitudes.

Gluonic Penguins in $B\toππ$ from QCD Light-Cone Sum Rules

The $B\to ππ$ hadronic matrix element of the chromomagnetic dipole operator $O_{8g}$ (gluonic penguin) is calculated using the QCD light-cone sum rule approach. The resulting sum rule for $<ππ|O_{8g}|B>$ contains, in addition to the $O(α_s)$ part induced by hard gluon exchanges, a contribution due to soft gluons. We find that in the limit $m_b\to \infty$ the soft-gluon contribution is suppressed as a second power of $1/m_b$ with respect to the leading-order factorizable $B\to ππ$ amplitude, whereas the hard-gluon contribution has only an $α_s$ suppression. Nevertheless, at finite $m_b$, soft and hard effects of the gluonic penguin in $B\to ππ$ are of the same order. Our result indicates that soft contributions are indispensable for an accurate counting of nonfactorizable effects in charmless B decays. On the phenomenological side we predict that the impact of gluonic penguins on $\bar{B}^0_d\to π^+π^-$ is very small, but is noticeable for $\bar{B}^0_d\to π^0π^0$.

Subleading Light-cone distributions functions in the decays Lambda(b) --> X(s) Gamma and Lambda(b) --> X(u) Lepton Anti-Nu

In this paper we investigate the subleading twist corrections to the photon energy spectrum in the decay Lambda_b -> X_s γand to the lepton energy spectrum in Lambda_b -> X_u l \barν. As a first step we rederive the matching coefficients of the subleading twist using a much simpler method. Parametrizing the matrix elements for Lambda_b and using reparametrization invariance, we show that the energy spectra close to the endpoints are given in terms of only a single universal function.

Parton--Hadron Duality in B Meson Decays

We summarize the current view on Parton-Hadron duality as it applies to B meson decays. It is emphasized that an OPE treatment is essential for properly formulating duality and its limitations. Duality violations are unlikely to become the limiting factor in describing semileptonic B width vis-a-vie higher order corrections. The consistent extraction of the b quark mass from B production and decays provides a striking example of the theoretical control achieved.

Subleading shape functions in B -> X_u l νand the determination of |Vub|

We calculate the subleading twist contributions to the endpoint of the inclusive lepton energy spectrum in B -> X_u l ν. We show that the same two subleading twist functions that appear in the decay B -> X_s γgovern the subleading effects in this decay. Using these results we find large O(Lambda/mB) corrections to the determination of |Vub| from the endpoint of the charged lepton spectrum. Using a simple model for the relevant subleading shape functions, we estimate the uncertainty in |Vub| from Lambda/mb corrections to be at the ~ 15% level for a lower lepton energy cut of 2.2 GeV.

Reparametrization Invariance in Inclusive Decays of Heavy Hadrons

Reparametrization invariance is the invariance of the heavy mass limit under small changes of the heavy-quark four velocity. We discuss the implications of this invariance for non-local light cone operators, the matrix elements of which are relevant for the leading and subleading shape functions describing differential rates for inclusive heavy-to-light transitions.

Direct CP Violation In Radiative B Decays

We discuss the role of the radiative B decays $B \to X_{s/d} γ$ in our search for new physics focusing on the issue of direct CP violation. We discuss in some detail a SM prediction for the CP asymmetries in inclusive $b \to s/d$ transitions, namely $\mid Δ{\cal B}(B \to X_s γ) + Δ{\cal B}(B \to X_d γ) \mid \sim 1 \cdot 10^{-9}$. Any measured value in significant deviation of this estimate would indicate new sources of CP violation beyond the CKM phase.
