Inclusive Decays of Heavy Flavours

Recent progress in the theoretical description of inclusive heavy flavour decays is reviewed. After an outline of the theoretical methods applications to total decay rates and semileptonic decay spectra are presented.

HQQET: An Effective Theory Approach to Heavy Quarkonia Decays

We discuss systems containing a heavy quark and a heavy antiquark in the infinite mass limit of QCD. Studying the limit of equal velocities for both heavy particles, we formulate an effective theory approach to heavy quarkonia-like systems. The method is well suited to processes in which the two heavy quarks annihilate, such as electromagnetic and strong decays of charmonium and bottomonium and weak decays of $B_c$.

Combining Vector-- and Heavy Quark Symmetry

Assuming that the chiral symmetry of the light degrees of freedom is realized as the vector symmetry proposed by Georgi, we write down a chiral Lagrangian for heavy mesons which incorporates both heavy quark and vector symmetry. Some of the phenomenological implications of this idea are considered.

Heavy Quarkonium Effective Theory

We formulate a QCD-based effective theory approach to heavy quarkonia-like systems as $\bar{c} c$ and $\bar{b} b$ resonances and $B_c$ states. We apply the method to inclusive decays, working out a few examples in detail.

Wopper, Version 1.1: A Monte Carlo Event Generator for Four Fermion Production at LEP-II and Beyond

We report on the status of the Monte Carlo event generator WOPPER. Version 1.1 of WOPPER describes four fermion production at LEP-II and beyond with leading logarithmic radiative corrections in the double W pole approximation. These approximations are appropriate for almost all practical purposes, but the inclusion of these finite width effects and radiative corrections is nevertheless indispensable for LEP-II physics.

Weak Decays of Heavy-Quark Systems

The recent theoretical progress in the description of semileptonic decays in the framework of the heavy mass expansion is summarized. Both inclusive and exclusive decays are considered.

Higher Order $1/m$ Corrections at Zero Recoil

The general structure of the $1/m$ corrections at zero recoil is studied. The relevant matrix elements are forward matrix elements of local higher dimensional operators and their time ordered products with higher order terms from the Lagrangian. These matrix elements may be classified in a simple way and the analysis at the non recoil point for the form factor of heavy quark currents simplifies drastically. The second order recoil corrections to the form factor $h_{A1}$ of the axial vector current, relevant for the $|V_{cb}|$ determination from $B \to D^*$ decays, are estimated to be $-5\% < h_{A1} - 1 < 0$.

Resummation of Nonperturbative Corrections to the Lepton Spectrum in Inclusive $B\to X\,\ell\,\barν$ Decays

We apply the operator product expansion to resum the leading nonperturbative corrections to the endpoint region of the lepton spectrum in inclusive semileptonic $B\to X_q\,\ell\,\barν$ decays, taking into account a finite quark mass $m_q$ in the final state. We show that both for $b\to c$ and $b\to u$ transitions, it is consistent to describe these effects by a convolution of the parton model spectrum with a fundamental light-cone structure function. The moments of this function are proportional to forward matrix elements of higher-dimension operators. The prospects for an extraction of the structure function from a measurement of the lepton spectrum are discussed.

Subleading Corrections to Semileptonic Lambda_c Decays

The semileptonic decay $Λ_c \to Λ\ell ν$ is considered in the framework of heavy quark effective theory beyond the leading order in the $1/m_c$ expansion. According to our estimate the polarization variable will receive only very small corrections such that $α_{Λ_c} \le -0.95$.

Operator Product Expansion for Inclusive Semileptonic Decays in Heavy Quark Effective Field Theory

Inclusive semileptonic decays are discussed in the framework of heavy quark effective field theory by employing the short distance expansion in the effective theory. The lowest order term turns out to be the parton model; the higher order terms may be regarded as correction terms to the parton model result. The first nonvanishing corrections to the parton model result are given and the lepton energy spectrum of inclusive semileptonic decays of heavy mesons is calculated.

Towards a Model-Independent Analysis of Rare $B$ Decays

Motivated by the experimental accessibility of rare $B$ decays in the ongoing and planned experiments, we propose to undertake a model-independent analysis of the inclusive decay rates and distributions in the processes \bgamaxs~ and \Bsell ~($B=B^\pm$ or $B^0_d$). We show how measurements of the decay rates and distributions in these processes would allow us to extract the magnitude and sign of the dominant Wilson coefficients of the magnetic moment operator $\mb \bar{s}_L σ_{μν} b_R F^{μν}$ and the four-fermion operators $(\bar{s}_L γ_μb_L)(\bar{\ell} γ^μ \ell)$ and $(\bar{s}_L γ_μb_L)(\bar{\ell} γ^μγ^5 \ell)$. Non-standard-model effects could thus manifest themselves at low energy in rare $B$ decays through the Wilson coefficient having values distinctly different from their standard-model counterparts. We illustrate this possibility using the examples of the two-doublet Higgs models and the minimal supersymmetric models. The dilepton invariant mass spectrum and the forward-backward asymmetry of $\ell^+$ in the centre-of-mass system of the dilepton pair in the decay \Bsell ~are also worked out for the standard model and some representative solutions for the other two models.

Unimagined Imaginary Parts in Heavy Quark Effective Field Theory

We argue that the imaginary parts of the anomalous dimensions in the multiparticle sectors of heavy quark effective field theory may be removed by a suitable redefinition of the multiparticle states. The connection between the imaginary parts of the anomalous dimensions and the interquark potential is pointed out

QCD Corrected $1/m_b$ Contributions to $B\bbar$--Mixixng

We calculate the QCD corrected effective Hamiltonian for $B\bbar$--Mixing in heavy quark effective theory including corrections of the order $Λ_{QCD} / m_b$. The matrix elements of the subleading operators are estimated using the vacuum insertion assumption. We show that the major part of the subleading corrections may be absorbed into the heavy meson decay constant $f_B$; the remaining corrections are only due to QCD effects and give an enhancement of $ΔM$ of 5\%.

Radiative Rare B Decays into Higher K-Resonances

We estimate the contributions of higher K-resonances to the radiative rare decays b -> s gamma. We use the spin symmetry for heavy quarks to reduce the number of independent form factors to four Isgur-Wise functions, which are estimated from the wave function model of Isgur, Scora, Grinstein, and Wise. Our results suggest a substantially larger branching fraction for the decay B -> K*2(1430) gamma than previous investigations.
