Fillable contact structures from positive surgery

We consider the question of when the operation of contact surgery with positive surgery coefficient, along a knot $K$ in a contact 3-manifold $Y$, gives rise to a weakly fillable contact structure. We show that this happens if and only if $Y$ itself is weakly fillable, and $K$ is isotopic to the boundary of a properly embedded symplectic disk inside a filling of $Y$. Moreover, if $Y'$ is a contact manifold arising from positive contact surgery along $K$, then any filling of $Y'$ is symplectomorphic to the complement of a suitable neighborhood of such a disk in a filling of $Y$. Using this result we deduce several necessary conditions for a knot in the standard 3-sphere to admit a fillable positive surgery, such as quasipositivity and equality between the slice genus and the 4-dimensional clasp number, and we give a characterization of such knots in terms of a quasipositive braid expression. We show that knots arising as the closure of a positive braid always admit a fillable positive surgery, as do knots that have lens space surgeries, and suitable satellites of such knots. In fact the majority of quasipositive knots with up to 10 crossings admit a fillable positive surgery. On the other hand, in general (strong) quasipositivity, positivity, or Lagrangian fillability need not imply a knot admits a fillable positive contact surgery.

Heegaard Floer homology of mapping tori II

We extend the techniques in a previous paper to calculate the Heegaard Floer homology groups for fibered 3-manifolds M whose monodromy is a power of a Dehn twist about a genus-1 separating circle on a surface of genus g > 1. We only consider non-torsion Spin^c-structures on M.

Heegaard Floer homology of certain mapping tori

We calculate the Heegaard Floer homologies$HF^+(M,s) for mapping tori M associated to certain surface diffeomorphisms, where s is any Spin^c structure on M whose first Chern class is non-torsion. Let gamma and delta be a pair of geometrically dual nonseparating curves on a genus g Riemann surface Sigma_g, and let sigma be a curve separating Sigma_g into components of genus 1 and g-1. Write t-gamma, t_delta, and t_sigma for the right-handed Dehn twists about each of these curves. The examples we consider are the mapping tori of the diffeomorphisms t_gamma^m circ t_delta^n for m,n in Z and that of t_sigma^{+-1}.

Torsion, TQFT, and Seiberg-Witten invariants of 3-manifolds

We prove a conjecture of Hutchings and Lee relating the Seiberg-Witten invariants of a closed 3-manifold X with b_1 > 0 to an invariant that `counts' gradient flow lines--including closed orbits--of a circle-valued Morse function on the manifold. The proof is based on a method described by Donaldson for computing the Seiberg-Witten invariants of 3-manifolds by making use of a `topological quantum field theory,' which makes the calculation completely explicit. We also realize a version of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of X as the intersection number of a pair of totally real submanifolds of a product of vortex moduli spaces on a Riemann surface constructed from geometric data on X. The analogy with recent work of Ozsvath and Szabo suggests a generalization of a conjecture of Salamon, who has proposed a model for the Seiberg-Witten-Floer homology of X in the case that X is a mapping torus.
