The canonical generalised Levi-Civita connection and its curvature

Given a (semi-Riemannian) generalised metric $\mathcal G$ and a divergence operator $\mathrm{div}$ on an exact Courant algebroid $E$, we geometrically construct a canonical generalised Levi-Civita connection $D^{\mathcal G, \mathrm{div}}$ for these data. In this way we provide a resolution of the problem of non-uniqueness of generalised Levi-Civita connections. Since the generalised Riemann tensor of $D^{\mathcal G, \mathrm{div}}$ is an invariant of the pair $(\mathcal G, \mathrm{div})$, we no longer need to discard curvature components which depend on the choice of the generalised connection. As a main result we decompose the generalised Riemann curvature tensor of $D^{\mathcal G, \mathrm{div}}$ in terms of classical (non-generalised) geometric data. Based on this set of master formulas we derive a comprehensive curvature tool-kit for applications in generalised geometry. This includes decompositions for the full generalised Ricci tensor, the generalised Ricci tensor, and three generalised scalar-valued curvature invariants, two of which are new.

T-duality across non-extremal horizons

When applying T-duality to a generic, non-extreme Killing horizon, T-duality is spacelike on one side and timelike on the other. We show, using simple examples from four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory, that the image of the horizon is a singularity which can be understood as an interface between two different T-dual theories and their solutions. Using an embedding into type-II string theory, we show that the singularity occurs when scalars reach the boundary of moduli space, resulting in a breakdown of the effective field theory due to the presence of tensionless strings.

Supersymmetry algebras in arbitrary signature and their R-symmetry groups

String theory, specifically type-II superstring theory, can be formulated in any ten-dimensional signature. To facilitate the study of supergravity and superstring theories in this setting, we present a uniform construction of supersymmetry algebras in arbitrary dimension and signature, which generalizes the ideas underlying symplectic Majorana spinors. In our formalism R-symmetry acts on an auxiliary multiplicity space which makes its action manifest. This allows us to provide extensive tables which list the R-symmetry groups of extended supersymmetry algebras for all signatures together with other useful information. Twisted (`type-*') supersymmetry algebras in Lorentz signature with non-compact R-symmetry groups are shown to be part of a general pattern resulting from the interplay between complex superbrackets and reality conditions. As an application we show how the relations between type-II string theories in ten and nine dimensions can be extracted from their supersymmetry algebras. We also use our results to determine the special geometry of vector and hypermultiplet scalar manifolds of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ and three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supergravity theories for all signatures.

Special Geometry, Hessian Structures and Applications

The target space geometry of abelian vector multiplets in ${\cal N}= 2$ theories in four and five space-time dimensions is called special geometry. It can be elegantly formulated in terms of Hessian geometry. In this review, we introduce Hessian geometry, focussing on aspects that are relevant for the special geometries of four- and five-dimensional vector multiplets. We formulate ${\cal N}= 2$ theories in terms of Hessian structures and give various concrete applications of Hessian geometry, ranging from static BPS black holes in four and five space-time dimensions to topological string theory, emphasizing the role of the Hesse potential. We also discuss the r-map and c-map which relate the special geometries of vector multiplets to each other and to hypermultiplet geometries. By including time-like dimensional reductions, we obtain theories in Euclidean signature, where the scalar target spaces carry para-complex versions of special geometry.

From Static to Cosmological Solutions of N=2 Supergravity

We obtain cosmological solutions with Kasner-like asymptotics in N=2 gauged and ungauged supergravity by maximal analytic continuation of planar versions of non-extremal black hole solutions. Initially, we construct static solutions with planar symmetry by solving the time-reduced field equations. Upon lifting back to four dimensions, the resulting static regions are incomplete and bounded by a curvature singularity on one side and a Killing horizon on the other. Analytic continuation reveals the existence of dynamic patches in the past and future, with Kasner-like asymptotics. For the ungauged STU-model, our solutions contain previously known solutions with the same conformal diagram as a subset. We find explicit lifts to five, six, ten and eleven dimensions which show that in the extremal limit, the underlying brane configuration is the same as for STU black holes. The extremal limit of the six-dimensional lift is shown to be BPS for special choices of the integration constants. We argue that there is a universal correspondence between spherically symmetric black hole solutions and planar cosmological solutions which can be illustrated using the Reissner-Nordström solution of Einstein-Maxwell theory.

Four-dimensional vector multiplets in arbitrary signature

We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for Poincaré Lie superalgebras in any dimension and signature to be isomorphic. This reduces the classification problem, up to certain discrete operations, to classifying the orbits of the Schur group on the vector space of superbrackets. We then classify four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry algebras, which are found to be unique in Euclidean and in neutral signature, while in Lorentz signature there exist two algebras with R-symmetry groups $\mathrm{U}(2)$ and $\mathrm{U(}1,1)$, respectively. By dimensional reduction we construct two off shell vector multiplet representations for each possible signature, and find that the corresponding Lagrangians always have a different relative sign between the scalar and the Maxwell term. In Lorentzian signature this is related to the existence of two non-isomorphic algebras, while in Euclidean and neutral signature the two theories are related by a local field redefinition which implements an isomorphism between the underlying supersymmetry algebras.

Five-dimensional vector multiplets in arbitrary signature

We start developing a formalism which allows to construct supersymmetric theories systematically across space-time signatures. Our construction uses a complex form of the supersymmetry algebra, which is obtained by doubling the spinor representation. This allows one to partially disentangle the Lorentz and R-symmetry group and generalizes symplectic Majorana spinors. For the case where the spinor representation is complex-irreducible, the R-symmetry only acts on an internal multiplicity space, and we show that the connected groups which occur are SO(2), SO(1,1), SU(2) and SU(1,1). As an application we construct the off-shell supersymmetry transformations and supersymmetric Lagrangians for five-dimensional vector multiplets in arbitrary signature (t,s). In this case the R-symmetry groups are SU(2) or SU(1, 1), depending on whether the spinor representation carries a quaternionic or para-quaternionic structure. In Euclidean signature the scalar and vector kinetic terms differ by a relative sign, which is consistent with previous results in the literature and shows that this sign flip is an inevitable consequence of the Euclidean supersymmetry algebra.

ASK/PSK-correspondence and the r-map

We formulate a correspondence between affine and projective special Kähler manifolds of the same dimension. As an application, we show that, under this correspondence, the affine special Kähler manifolds in the image of the rigid r-map are mapped to one-parameter deformations of projective special Kähler manifolds in the image of the supergravity r-map. The above one-parameter deformations are interpreted as perturbative $α'$-corrections in heterotic and type-II string compactifications with $N=2$ supersymmetry. Also affine special Kähler manifolds with quadratic prepotential are mapped to one-parameter families of projective special Kähler manifolds with quadratic prepotential. We show that the completeness of the deformed supergravity r-map metric depends solely on the (well-understood) completeness of the undeformed metric and the sign of the deformation parameter.

Hessian geometry and the holomorphic anomaly

We present a geometrical framework which incorporates higher derivative corrections to the action of N = 2 vector multiplets in terms of an enlarged scalar manifold which includes a complex deformation parameter. This enlarged space carries a deformed version of special Kahler geometry which we characterise. The holomorphic anomaly equation arises in this framework from the integrability condition for the existence of a Hesse potential.

Special Geometry of Euclidean Supersymmetry IV: the local c-map

We consider timelike and spacelike reductions of 4D, N = 2 Minkowskian and Euclidean vector multiplets coupled to supergravity and the maps induced on the scalar geometry. In particular, we investigate (i) the (standard) spatial c-map, (ii) the temporal c-map, which corresponds to the reduction of the Minkowskian theory over time, and (iii) the Euclidean c-map, which corresponds to the reduction of the Euclidean theory over space. In the last two cases we prove that the target manifold is para-quaternionic Kahler. In cases (i) and (ii) we construct two integrable complex structures on the target manifold, one of which belongs to the quaternionic and para-quaternionic structure, respectively. In case (iii) we construct two integrable para-complex structures, one of which belongs to the para-quaternionic structure. In addition we provide a new global construction of the spatial, temporal and Euclidean c-maps, and separately consider a description of the target manifold as a fibre bundle over a projective special Kahler or para-Kahler base.

Non-extremal black hole solutions from the c-map

We construct new static, spherically symmetric non-extremal black hole solutions of four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity, using a systematic technique based on dimensional reduction over time (the c-map) and the real formulation of special geometry. For a certain class of models we actually obtain the general solution to the full second order equations of motion, whilst for other classes of models, such as those obtainable by dimensional reduction from five dimensions, heterotic tree-level models, and type-II Calabi-Yau compactifications in the large volume limit a partial set of solutions are found. When considering specifically non-extremal black hole solutions we find that regularity conditions reduce the number of integration constants by one half. Such solutions satisfy a unique set of first order equations, which we identify. Several models are investigated in detail, including examples of non-homogeneous spaces such as the quantum deformed $STU$ model. Though we focus on static, spherically symmetric solutions of ungauged supergravity, the method is adaptable to other types of solutions and to gauged supergravity.

Quaternionic Kähler metrics associated with special Kähler manifolds

We give an explicit formula for the quaternionic Kähler metrics obtained by the HK/QK correspondence. As an application, we give a new proof of the fact that the Ferrara-Sabharwal metric as well as its one-loop deformation is quaternionic Kähler. A similar explicit formula is given for the analogous (K/K) correspondence between Kähler manifolds endowed with a Hamiltonian Killing vector field. As an example, we apply this formula in the case of an arbitrary conical Kähler manifold.

Nernst branes from special geometry

We construct new black brane solutions in $U(1)$ gauged ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity with a general cubic prepotential, which have entropy density $s\sim T^{1/3}$ as $T \rightarrow 0$ and thus satisfy the Nernst Law. By using the real formulation of special geometry, we are able to obtain analytical solutions in closed form as functions of two parameters, the temperature $T$ and the chemical potential $μ$. Our solutions interpolate between hyperscaling violating Lifshitz geometries with $(z,θ)=(0,2)$ at the horizon and $(z,θ)=(1,-1)$ at infinity. In the zero temperature limit, where the entropy density goes to zero, we recover the extremal Nernst branes of Barisch et al, and the parameters of the near horizon geometry change to $(z,θ)=(3,1)$.

Time-like reductions of five-dimensional supergravity

In this paper we study the scalar geometries occurring in the dimensional reduction of minimal five-dimensional supergravity to three Euclidean dimensions, and find that these depend on whether one first reduces over space or over time. In both cases the scalar manifold of the reduced theory is described as an eight-dimensional Lie group $L$ (the Iwasawa subgroup of $G_{2(2)}$) with a left-invariant para-quaternionic-Kähler structure. We show that depending on whether one reduces first over space or over time, the group $L$ is mapped to two different open $L$-orbits on the pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space $G_{2(2)}/(SL(2) \cdot SL(2))$. These two orbits are inequivalent in the sense that they are distinguished by the existence of integrable $L$-invariant complex or para-complex structures.

Non-extremal and non-BPS extremal five-dimensional black strings from generalized special real geometry

We construct non-extremal as well as extremal black string solutions in minimal five-dimensional supergravity coupled to vector multiplets using dimensional reduction to three Euclidean dimensions. Our method does not assume that the scalar manifold is a symmetric space, and applies as well to a class of non-supersymmetric theories governed by a generalization of special real geometry. We find that five-dimensional black string solutions correspond to geodesics in a specific totally geodesic para-Kähler submanifold of the scalar manifold of the dimensionally reduced theory, and identify the subset of geodesics that corresponds to regular black string solutions in five dimensions. BPS and non-BPS extremal solutions are distinguished by whether the corresponding geodesics are along the eigendirections of the para-complex structure or not, a characterization which carries over to non-supersymmetric theories. For non-extremal black strings the values of the scalars at the outer and inner horizon are not independent integration constants but determined by certain functions of the charges and moduli. By lifting solutions from three to four dimensions we obtain non-extremal versions of small black holes, and find that while the outer horizon takes finite size, the inner horizon is still degenerate.

Non-extremal black holes from the generalised r-map

We review the timelike dimensional reduction of a class of five-dimensional theories that generalises 5D, N = 2 supergravity coupled to vector multiplets. As an application we construct instanton solutions to the four-dimensional Euclidean theory, and investigate the criteria for solutions to lift to static non-extremal black holes in five dimensions. We focus specifically on two classes of models: STU-like models, and models with a block diagonal target space metric. For STU-like models the second order equations of motion of the four-dimensional theory can be solved explicitly, and we obtain the general solution. For block diagonal models we find a restricted class of solutions, where the number of independent scalar fields depends on the number of blocks. When lifting these solutions to five dimensions we show, by explicit calculation, that one obtains static non-extremal black holes with scalar fields that take finite values on the horizon only if the number of integration constants reduces by exactly half.

Conification of Kähler and hyper-Kähler manifolds

Given a Kähler manifold $M$ endowed with a Hamiltonian Killing vector field $Z$, we construct a conical Kähler manifold $\hat{M}$ such that $M$ is recovered as a Kähler quotient of $\hat{M}$. Similarly, given a hyper-Kähler manifold $(M,g,J_1,J_2,J_3)$ endowed with a Killing vector field $Z$, Hamiltonian with respect to the Kähler form of $J_1$ and satisfying $\mathcal{L}_ZJ_2= -2J_3$, we construct a hyper-Kähler cone $\hat{M}$ such that $M$ is a certain hyper-Kähler quotient of $\hat{M}$. In this way, we recover a theorem by Haydys. Our work is motivated by the problem of relating the supergravity c-map to the rigid c-map. We show that any hyper-Kähler manifold in the image of the c-map admits a Killing vector field with the above properties. Therefore, it gives rise to a hyper-Kähler cone, which in turn defines a quaternionic Kähler manifold. Our results for the signature of the metric and the sign of the scalar curvature are consistent with what we know about the supergravity c-map.

The Hesse potential, the c-map and black hole solutions

We present a new formulation of the local c-map, which makes use of the real formulation of special Kahler geometry and the associated Hesse potential. As an application we use the temporal version of the c-map to derive the black hole attractor equations from geometric properties of the scalar manifold, and we construct various stationary solutions for four-dimensional vector multiplets by lifting instanton solutions of the time-reduced theory.
