Strongly correlated states of light in chiral chains of three-level quantum emitters

We study the correlated transport of photons through a chain of three-level emitters that are coupled chirally to a photonic mode of a waveguide. It is found that this system can transfer a classical input into a strongly correlated state of light in a unitary manner, i.e. without the necessity of nonlinear photon losses. In particular, we shows that the collective interaction with the emitter ensemble leads to the emergence of highly antibunched light with long-range correlations upon crossing a critical length of the chain. By operating close to conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency of the three-level medium, the high degree of antibunching and photon transmission can be maintained in the presence of moderate losses. These features, combined with the robustness against number fluctuations, suggest a promising mechanism for single-photon generation and may open the door to exploring correlated quantum many-body states of light.

Plasma-enhanced interaction and optical nonlinearities of Cu$_2$O Rydberg excitons

We theoretically investigate the nonlinear optical transmission through a cuprous oxide crystal for wavelengths that cover the series of highly excited excitons, observed in recent experiments. Since such Rydberg excitons have strong van der Waals interactions, they can dynamically break the conditions for resonant exciton creation and dramatically modify the refractive index of the material in a nonlinear manner. We explore this mechanism theoretically and determine its effects on the optical properties of a semiconductor for the case of degenerate pair-state asymptotes of Rydberg excitons in Cu$_2$O. Upon analyzing the additional effects of a dilute residual electron-hole plasma, we find quantitative agreement with previous transmission measurements, which provides strong indications for the enhancement of Rydberg-induced nonlinearities by surrounding free charges.

Instability threshold in a large balanced magneto-optical trap

Large clouds of cold atoms prepared in a magneto-optical trap can develop spatio-temporal instabilities when the frequency of the trapping lasers is brought close to the atomic resonance. This system bears close similarities with trapped plasmas, whereby effective Coulomb interactions are induced by the exchange of scattered photons and lead to collective nonlinear dynamics of the trapped atoms. We report in this paper a detailed experimental study of the instability threshold, and comparisons with three-dimensional simulations of the interacting, laser-driven cloud.

Enhanced nonlinear interaction of polaritons via excitonic Rydberg states in monolayer WSe2

Strong optical nonlinearities play a central role in realizing quantum photonic technologies. In solid state systems, exciton-polaritons, which result from the hybridization of material excitations and cavity photons, are an attractive candidate to realize such nonlinearities. Here, the interaction between excitons forms the basis of the polaritonic nonlinearity. While the interaction between ground state excitons generates a notable optical nonlinearity, the strength of such ground state interactions is generally not sufficient to reach the regime of quantum nonlinear optics and strong single-polariton interactions. Excited states, however, feature enhanced interactions and therefore hold promise for accessing the quantum domain of single-photon nonlinearities, as demonstrated with high-lying Rydberg states of cold atomic systems. Excitons in excited states have recently been observed in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. Here we demonstrate the formation of exciton-polaritons using the first excited excitonic state in monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe2) embedded in a microcavity. Owing to the larger exciton size compared to their ground state counterpart, the realized polaritons exhibit an enhanced nonlinear response by more than an order of magnitude, as evidenced through a modification of the cavity Rabi splitting. The demonstration of excited exciton-polaritons in two-dimensional semiconductors and their enhanced nonlinear response presents the first step towards the generation of strong photon interactions in solid state systems, a necessary building block for quantum photonic technologies.

Polariton Exchange Interactions in Multichannel Optical Networks

We examine the dynamics of Rydberg polaritons with dipolar interactions that propagate in multiple spatial modes. The dipolar excitation exchange between different Rydberg states mediates an effective exchange between polaritons that enables photons to hop across different spatial channels. Remarkably, the efficiency of this photon exchange process can increase with the channel distance and becomes optimal at a finite rail separation. Based on this mechanism, we design a simple photonic network that realizes a two photon quantum gate with a robust $π$-phase, protected by the symmetries of the underlying photon interaction and the geometry of the network. These capabilities expand the scope of Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency towards multidimensional geometries for nonlinear optical networks and explorations of photonic many-body physics.

Blockade-induced resonant enhancement of the optical nonlinearity in a Rydberg medium

We predict a resonant enhancement of the nonlinear optical response of an interacting Rydberg gas under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. The enhancement originates from a two-photon process which resonantly couples electronic states of a pair of atoms dressed by a strong control field. We calculate the optical response for the three-level system by explicitly including the dynamics of the intermediate state. We find an analytical expression for the third order susceptibility for a weak classical probe field. The nonlinear absorption displays the strongest resonant behavior on two-photon resonance where the detuning of the probe field equals the Rabi frequency of the control field. The nonlinear dispersion of the medium exhibits various spatial shapes depending on the interaction strength. Based on the developed model, we propose a realistic experimental scenario to observe the resonance by performing transmission measurements.

Quantum gas microscopy of Rydberg macrodimers

A microscopic understanding of molecules is essential for many fields of natural sciences but their tiny size hinders direct optical access to their constituents. Rydberg macrodimers - bound states of two highly-excited Rydberg atoms - feature bond lengths easily exceeding optical wavelengths. Here we report on the direct microscopic observation and detailed characterization of such macrodimers in a gas of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. The size of about 0.7 micrometers, comparable to the size of small bacteria, matches the diagonal distance of the lattice. By exciting pairs in the initial two-dimensional atom array, we resolve more than 50 vibrational resonances. Using our spatially resolved detection, we observe the macrodimers by correlated atom loss and demonstrate control of the molecular alignment by the choice of the vibrational state. Our results allow for precision testing of Rydberg interaction potentials and establish quantum gas microscopy as a powerful new tool for quantum chemistry.

Supersolidity around a critical point in dipolar Bose Einstein condensates

We explore spatial symmetry breaking of a dipolar Bose Einstein condensate in the thermodynamic limit and reveal a critical point in the phase diagram at which crystallization occurs via a second order phase transition. This behavior is traced back to the significant effects of quantum fluctuations in dipolar condensates, which moreover stabilize a new supersolid phase, namely a regular honeycomb pattern with maximal modulational contrast and near-perfect superfluidity.

Critical slowdown of non-equilibrium polaron dynamics

We study the quantum dynamics of a single impurity following its sudden immersion into a Bose-Einstein condensate. The ensuing formation of the Bose polaron in this general setting can be seen as impurity decoherence driven by the condensate, which we describe within a master equation approach. We derive rigorous analytical results for this decoherence dynamics, and thereby reveal distinct stages of its evolution from a universal stretched exponential initial relaxation to the final approach to equilibrium. The associated polaron formation time exhibits a strong dependence on the impurity speed and is found to undergo a critical slowdown around the speed of sound of the condensate. This rich non-equilibrium behaviour of quantum impurities is of direct relevance to recent cold atom experiments, in which Bose polarons are created by a sudden quench of the impurity-bath interaction.

Interactions between Rydberg excitons in Cu$_2$O

Highly-excited states of excitons in cuprous oxide have recently been observed at a record quantum number of up to $n=25$. Here, we evaluate the long-range interactions between pairs of Rydberg excitons in Cu$_2$O, which are due to direct Coulomb forces rather than short-range collisions typically considered for ground state excitons. A full numerical analysis is supplemented by the van der Waals asymptotics at large exciton separations, including the angular dependence of the potential surfaces.

Long-range interactions and symmetry-breaking in quantum gases through optical feedback

We consider a quasi two-dimensional atomic Bose Einstein condensate interacting with a near-resonant laser field that is back-reflected onto the condensate by a planar mirror. We show that this single-mirror optical feedback leads to an unusual type of effective interaction between the ultracold atoms giving rise to a rich spectrum of ground states. In particular, we find that it can cause the spontaneous contraction of the quasi two-dimensional condensate to form a self-bound one-dimensional chain of mesoscopic quantum droplets, and demonstrate that the observation of this exotic effect is within reach of current experiments.

Photon Subtraction by Many-Body Decoherence

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the scattering of a photonic quantum field from another stored in a strongly interacting atomic Rydberg ensemble. Considering the many-body limit of this problem, we derive an exact solution to the scattering-induced spatial decoherence of multiple stored photons, allowing for a rigorous understanding of the underlying dissipative quantum dynamics. Combined with our experiments, this analysis reveals a correlated coherence-protection process in which the scattering from one excitation can shield all others from spatial decoherence. We discuss how this effect can be used to manipulate light at the quantum level, providing a robust mechanism for single-photon subtraction, and experimentally demonstrate this capability.

Giant optical nonlinearities from Rydberg-excitons in semiconductor microcavities

The realization of exciton-polaritons -- hybrid excitations of semiconductor quantum well excitons and cavity photons -- has been of great technological and scientific significance. In particular, the short-range collisional interaction between excitons has enabled explorations into a wealth of nonequilibrium and hydrodynamical effects that arise in weakly nonlinear polariton condensates. Yet, the ability to enhance optical nonlinearities would enable quantum photonics applications and open up a new realm of photonic many-body physics in a scalable and engineerable solid-state environment. Here we outline a route to such capabilities in cavity-coupled semiconductors by exploiting the giant interactions between excitons in Rydberg-states. We demonstrate that optical nonlinearities in such systems can be vastly enhanced by several orders of magnitude and induce nonlinear processes at the level of single photons.

Quantum and Nonlinear Optics in Strongly Interacting Atomic Ensembles

Coupling light to ensembles of strongly interacting particles has emerged as a promising route toward achieving few photon nonlinearities. One specific way to implement this kind of nonlinearity is to interface light with highly excited atomic Rydberg states by means of electromagnetically induced transparency, an approach which allows freely propagating photons to acquire synthetic interactions of hitherto unprecedented strength. Here, we present an overview of this rapidly developing field, from classical effects to quantum manifestations of the nonlocal nonlinearities emerging in such systems. With an emphasis on underlying theoretical concepts, we describe the many experimental breakthroughs so far demonstrated and discuss potential applications looming on the horizon.

Optimal control of Rydberg lattice gases

We present optimal control protocols to prepare different many-body quantum states of Rydberg atoms in optical lattices. Specifically, we show how to prepare highly ordered many-body ground states, GHZ states as well as some superposition of symmetric excitation number Fock states, that inherit the translational symmetry from the Hamiltonian, within sufficiently short excitation times minimizing detrimental decoherence effects. For the GHZ states, we propose a two-step detection protocol to experimentally verify the optimal preparation of the target state based only on standard measurement techniques. Realistic experimental constraints and imperfections are taken into account by our optimization procedure making it applicable to ongoing experiments.

Coherent many-body spin dynamics in a long-range interacting Ising chain

Coherent many-body quantum dynamics lies at the heart of quantum simulation and quantum computation. Both require coherent evolution in the exponentially large Hilbert space of an interacting many-body system. To date, trapped ions have defined the state of the art in terms of achievable coherence times in interacting spin chains. Here, we establish an alternative platform by reporting on the observation of coherent, fully interaction-driven quantum revivals of the magnetization in Rydberg-dressed Ising spin chains of atoms trapped in an optical lattice. We identify partial many-body revivals at up to about ten times the characteristic time scale set by the interactions. At the same time, single-site-resolved correlation measurements link the magnetization dynamics with inter-spin correlations appearing at different distances during the evolution. These results mark an enabling step towards the implementation of Rydberg atom based quantum annealers, quantum simulations of higher dimensional complex magnetic Hamiltonians, and itinerant long-range interacting quantum matter.

Coherent photon manipulation in interacting atomic ensembles

Coupling photons to Rydberg excitations in a cold atomic gas yields unprecedentedly large optical nonlinearities at the level of individual light quanta, where the formation of nearby dark-state polaritons is blocked by the strong interactions between Rydberg atoms. This blockade mechanism, however, realizes an inherently dissipative nonlinearity, which limits the performance of practical applications. In this work, we propose a new approach to strong photon interactions via a largely coherent mechanism at drastically suppressed photon losses. Rather than a polariton blockade, it is based on an interaction induced conversion between distinct types of dark-state polaritons with different propagation characteristics. We outline a specific implementation of this approach and show that it permits to turn a single photon into an effective mirror with a robust and continuously tuneable reflection phase. We describe potential applications, including a detailed discussion of achievable operational fidelities.

Many-body interferometry of a Rydberg-dressed spin lattice

Ultracold atoms are an ideal platform to study strongly correlated phases of matter in and out of equilibrium. Much of the experimental progress in this field crucially relies on the control of the contact interaction between two atoms. Control of strong long-range interactions between distant ground state atoms has remained a long standing goal, opening the path towards the study of fundamentally new quantum many-body systems including frustrated or topological magnets and supersolids. Optical dressing of ground state atoms by near-resonant laser coupling to Rydberg states has been proposed as a versatile method to engineer such interactions. However, up to now the great potential of this approach for interaction control in a many-body setting has eluded experimental confirmation. Here we report the realisation of coherent Rydberg-dressing in an ultracold atomic lattice gas and directly probe the induced interaction potential using an interferometric technique with single atom sensitivity. We use this approach to implement a two-dimensional synthetic spin lattice and demonstrate its versatility by tuning the range and anisotropy of the effective spin interactions. Our measurements are in remarkable agreement with exact solutions of the many-body dynamics, providing further evidence for the high degree of accurate interaction control in these systems. Finally, we identify a collective many-body decay process, and discuss possible routes to overcome this current limitation of coherence times. Our work marks the first step towards the use of laser-controlled Rydberg interactions for the study of exotic quantum magnets in optical lattices.
