Asymptotically equicontinuous sequences of operators and a Banach-Steinhaus type theorem

We introduce the notion of an asymptotically equicontinuous sequence of linear operators, and use it to prove the following result. If $X,Y$ are topological vector spaces, if $T_n,T:X\to Y$ are continuous linear maps, and if $D$ is a dense subset of $X$, then the following statements are equivalent: (i) $T_nx\to Tx$ for all $x\in X$, and (ii) $T_n x\to Tx$ for all $x\in D$ and the sequence $(T_n)$ is asymptotically equicontinuous.

A four-mean theorem and its application to pseudospectra

Let $N\ge 4$. We show that, if $x_1,\dots,x_N$ and $y_1,\dots,y_N$ are $N$-tuples of strictly positive numbers whose arithmetic, geometric and harmonic means agree, then \[ \max_j x_j <(N-2)\max_j y_j \quad\text{and}\quad \min_j x_j <(N-2)\min_j y_j. \] This is used to show that, if $N\ge4$ and $A,B$ are $N\times N$ matrices with super-identical pseudospectra, then, for every polynomial $p$, we have \[ \|p(A)\|< \sqrt{N-2}\|p(B)\|, \] unless $p(A)=p(B)=0$. This improves a previously known inequality to the point of being sharp, at least for $N=4$.

Application of the Cramér-Wold theorem to testing for invariance under group actions

We address the problem of testing for the invariance of a probability measure under the action of a group of linear transformations. We propose a procedure based on consideration of one-dimensional projections, justified using a variant of the Cramér-Wold theorem. Our test procedure is powerful, computationally efficient, and dimension-independent, extending even to the case of infinite-dimensional spaces (multivariate functional data). It includes, as special cases, tests for exchangeability and sign-invariant exchangeability. We compare our procedure with some previous proposals in these cases, in a small simulation study. The paper concludes with two real-data examples.

An abstract approach to the Crouzeix conjecture

Let $A$ be a uniform algebra, $θ:A\to M_n(\mathbb{C})$ be a continuous homomorphism and $α:A\to A$ be an antilinear contraction such that \[ \|θ(f)+θ(α(f))^*\|\le 2\|f\| \quad(f\in A). \] We show that $\|θ\|\le 1+\sqrt{2}$, and that $1+\sqrt2$ is sharp. We conjecture that, if further $α(1)=1$, then we may conclude that $\|θ\|\le2$. This would yield a positive solution to the Crouzeix conjecture on numerical ranges. In support of our conjecture, we prove that it is true in two special cases. We also discuss a completely bounded version of our conjecture that brings into play ideas from dilation theory.

Weakly multiplicative distributions and weighted Dirichlet spaces

We show that if $u$ is a compactly supported distribution on the complex plane such that, for every pair of entire functions $f,g$, \[ \langle u,f\overline{g}\rangle=\langle u,f\rangle\langle u,\overline{g}\rangle, \] then $u$ is supported at a single point. As an application, we complete the classification of all weighted Dirichlet spaces on the unit disk that are de Branges-Rovnyak spaces by showing that, for such spaces, the weight is necessarily a superharmonic function.

Power-series summability methods in de Branges-Rovnyak spaces

We show that there exists a de Branges-Rovnyak space $\mathcal{H}(b)$ on the unit disk containing a function $f$ with the following property: even though $f$ can be approximated by polynomials in $\mathcal{H}(b)$, neither the Taylor partial sums of $f$ nor their Cesàro, Abel, Borel or logarithmic means converge to $f$ in $\mathcal{H}(b)$. A key tool is a new abstract result showing that, if one regular summability method includes another for scalar sequences, then it automatically does so for certain Banach-space-valued sequences too.

A Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorem for reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces

We establish the following Hilbert-space analogue of the Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorem. If $\mathcal{H}$ is a reproducing kernel Hilbert space with a normalized complete Pick kernel, and if $Λ$ is a linear functional on $\mathcal{H}$ such that $Λ(1)=1$ and $Λ(f)\ne0$ for all cyclic functions $f\in\mathcal{H}$, then $Λ$ is multiplicative, in the sense that $Λ(fg)=Λ(f)Λ(g)$ for all $f,g\in\mathcal{H}$ such that $fg\in\mathcal{H}$. Moreover $Λ$ is automatically continuous. We give examples to show that the theorem fails if the hypothesis of a complete Pick kernel is omitted. We also discuss conditions under which $Λ$ has to be a point evaluation.

On the decay of singular inner functions

It is known that, if $S(z)$ is a non-constant, singular inner function defined on the unit disk, then $\min_{|z|\le r}|S(z)|\to0$ as $r\to1^-$. We show that the convergence may be arbitrarily slow.

Analytic capacity and holomorphic motions

We study the behavior of the analytic capacity of a compact set under deformations obtained by families of conformal maps depending holomorphically on the complex parameter. We show that, under those deformations, the logarithm of the analytic capacity varies harmonically. We also show that the hypotheses in this result cannot be substantially weakened.

Spectral sets, extremal functions and exceptional matrices

Let $A$ be a square matrix and let $Ω$ be an open set in the plane containing the spectrum of $A$. We consider the problem of maximizing the operator norm $\|f(A)\|$ amongst all holomorphic functions $f$ from $Ω$ into the closed unit disk. If $f_0$ is extremal for this problem and if $\|f_0(A)\|>1$, then it turns out that the matrix $f_0(A)$ has special properties, among them the fact that its principal left and right singular vectors are mutually orthogonal. We study this class of exceptional matrices $f_0(A)$. In particular, we are interested in the extent to which they are characterized by the aforementioned orthogonality property.

Hadamard multipliers on weighted Dirichlet spaces

The Hadamard product of two power series is obtained by multiplying them coefficientwise. In this paper we characterize those power series that act as Hadamard multipliers on all weighted Dirichlet spaces on the disk with superharmonic weights, and we obtain sharp estimates on the corresponding multiplier norms. Applications include an analogue of Fejér's theorem in these spaces, and a new estimate for the weighted Dirichlet integrals of dilates.

Linear polynomial approximation schemes in Banach holomorphic function spaces

Let $X$ be a Banach holomorphic function space on the unit disk. A linear polynomial approximation scheme for $X$ is a sequence of bounded linear operators $T_n:X\to X$ with the property that, for each $f\in X$, the functions $T_n(f)$ are polynomials converging to $f$ in the norm of the space. We completely characterize those spaces $X$ that admit a linear polynomial approximation scheme. In particular, we show that it is NOT sufficient merely that polynomials be dense in $X$.

A positivity conjecture related to the Riemann zeta function

According to two remarkable theorems of Nyman and Báez-Duarte, the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to a simply-stated criterion concerning least-squares approximation. In carrying out computations related to this criterion, we have observed a curious phenomenon: for no apparent reason, at least the first billion entries of a certain infinite triangular matrix associated to the Riemann zeta function are all positive. In this article we describe the background leading to this observation, and make a conjecture.

Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorems in function spaces

The Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorem states that a linear functional on a Banach algebra that is non-zero on invertible elements is necessarily a scalar multiple of a character. Recently this theorem has been extended to certain Banach function spaces that are not algebras. In this article we present a brief survey of these extensions.
