Kinetically Trapped Liquid-State Conformers of a Sodiated Model Peptide Observed in the Gas Phase

We investigate the peptide AcPheAla5LysH+, a model system for studying helix formation in the gas phase, in order to fully understand the forces that stabilize the helical structure. In particular, we address the question of whether the local fixation of the positive charge at the peptide's C-terminus is a prerequisite for forming helices by replacing the protonated C-terminal Lys residue by Ala and a sodium cation. The combination of gas-phase vibrational spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled ions with molecular simulations based on density-functional theory (DFT) allows for detailed structure elucidation. For sodiated AcPheAla6, we find globular rather than helical structures, as the mobile positive charge strongly interacts with the peptide backbone and disrupts secondary structure formation. Interestingly, the global minimum structure from simulation is not present in the experiment. We interpret that this is due to high barriers involved in re-arranging the peptide-cation interaction that ultimately result in kinetically trapped structures being observed in the experiment.

Simplified Models for Dark Matter Searches at the LHC

This document outlines a set of simplified models for dark matter and its interactions with Standard Model particles. It is intended to summarize the main characteristics that these simplified models have when applied to dark matter searches at the LHC, and to provide a number of useful expressions for reference. The list of models includes both s-channel and t-channel scenarios. For s-channel, spin-0 and spin-1 mediation is discussed, and also realizations where the Higgs particle provides a portal between the dark and visible sectors. The guiding principles underpinning the proposed simplified models are spelled out, and some suggestions for implementation are presented.

Symmetry Restored in Dibosons at the LHC?

A number of LHC resonance search channels display an excess in the invariant mass region of 1.8 - 2.0 TeV. Among them is a $3.4\,σ$ excess in the fully hadronic decay of a pair of Standard Model electroweak gauge bosons, in addition to potential signals in the $HW$ and dijet final states. We perform a model-independent cross-section fit to the results of all ATLAS and CMS searches sensitive to these final states. We then interpret these results in the context of the Left-Right Symmetric Model, based on the extended gauge group $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)'$, and show that a heavy right-handed gauge boson $W_R$ can naturally explain the current measurements with just a single coupling $g_R \sim 0.4$. In addition, we discuss a possible connection to dark matter.

Simplified Models for Dark Matter and Missing Energy Searches at the LHC

The study of collision events with missing energy as searches for the dark matter (DM) component of the Universe are an essential part of the extensive program looking for new physics at the LHC. Given the unknown nature of DM, the interpretation of such searches should be made broad and inclusive. This report reviews the usage of simplified models in the interpretation of missing energy searches. We begin with a brief discussion of the utility and limitation of the effective field theory approach to this problem. The bulk of the report is then devoted to several different simplified models and their signatures, including s-channel and t-channel processes. A common feature of simplified models for DM is the presence of additional particles that mediate the interactions between the Standard Model and the particle that makes up DM. We consider these in detail and emphasize the importance of their inclusion as final states in any coherent interpretation. We also review some of the experimental progress in the field, new signatures, and other aspects of the searches themselves. We conclude with comments and recommendations regarding the use of simplified models in Run-II of the LHC.

Collider Signals of Gravitational Fixed Points

Recent studies have shown that the poor perturbative behavior of General Relativity in the ultraviolet regime may be ameliorated by the existence of a non-Gaussian fixed point which renders the theory asymptotically safe and possibly non-perturbatively renormalizable. This results in a running of the (effective) gravitational coupling such that gravity becomes weaker at high energies. We parameterize this effective coupling with a form factor and study its consequences at the LHC and ILC in models with large extra dimensions or warped extra dimensions. We find significant effects in the processes of Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton exchange or resonant KK graviton production in both the Drell-Yan reaction as well as in $e^+e^-\to f\bar f$. On the otherhand, processes leading to KK graviton emission show qualitatively less sensitivity to the presence of a form factor. In addition, we examine tree-level perturbative unitarity in $2\to 2$ gravity-mediated scattering and find that this form factor produces a far better behaved amplitude at large center of mass energies.
