Corrigendum: Uniqueness of smooth extensions of generalized cohomology theories

The proof of Theorem 7.12 of "Uniqueness of smooth cohomology theories" by the authors of this note is not correct. The said theorem identifies the flat part of a differential extension of a generalized cohomology theory E with ER/Z (there called "smooth extension"). In this note, we give a correct proof. Moreover, we prove slightly stronger versions of some of the other results of that paper.

Quasi-multipliers of Hilbert and Banach C*-bimodules

Quasi-multipliers for a Hilbert C*-bimodule V were introduced by Brown, Mingo and Shen 1994 as a certain subset of the Banach bidual module V**. We give another (equivalent) definition of quasi-multipliers for Hilbert C*-bimodules using the centralizer approach and then show that quasi-multipliers are, in fact, universal (maximal) objects of a certain category. We also introduce quasi-multipliers for bimodules in Kasparov's sense and even for Banach bimodules over C*-algebras, provided these C*-algebras act non-degenerately. A topological picture of quasi-multipliers via the quasi-strict topology is given. Finally, we describe quasi-multipliers in two main situations: for the standard Hilbert bimodule l_2(A) and for bimodules of sections of Hilbert C*-bimodule bundles over locally compact spaces.

Equivariant geometric K-homology for compact Lie group actions

Let G be a compact Lie-group, X a compact G-CW-complex. We define equivariant geometric K-homology groups K^G_*(X), using an obvious equivariant version of the (M,E,f)-picture of Baum-Douglas for K-homology. We define explicit natural transformations to and from equivariant K-homology defined via KK-theory (the "official" equivariant K-homology groups) and show that these are isomorphism.

Uniqueness of smooth extensions of generalized cohomology theories

We provide an axiomatic framework for the study of smooth extensions of generalized cohomology theories. Our main results are about the uniqeness of smooth extensions, and the identification of the flat theory with the R/Z-theory. In particular, we show that there is a unique smooth extension of K-theory and of MU-cobordism with a unique multiplication, and that the flat theory in these cases is naturally isomorphic to the homotopy theorist's version of the cohomology theory with R/Z-coefficients. For this we only require a small set of natural compatibility conditions.

Homotopy groups of the moduli space of metrics of positive scalar curvature

We prove that for many degrees in a stable range the homotopy groups of the moduli space of metrics of positive scalar curvature on S^n and on other manifolds are non-trivial. This is achieved by further developing and then applying a family version of the surgery construction of Gromov-Lawson to an exotic smooth families of spheres due to Hatcher. As described, this works for all manifolds of suitable dimension and for the quotient of the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature by the (free) action of the subgroup of diffeomorphisms which fix a point and its tangent space. We also construct special manifolds where the quotient of the space of metrcis of positive scalar curvature by the full diffeomorphism group has non-trivial higher homotopy groups.

A Geometric Description of Equivariant K-Homology for Proper Actions

Let G be a discrete group and let X be a G-finite, proper G-CW-complex. We prove that Kasparov's equivariant K-homology groups KK^G(C_0(X),\C) are isomorphic to the geometric equivariant K-homology groups of X that are obtained by making the geometric K-homology theory of Baum and Douglas equivariant in the natural way. This reconciles the original and current formulations of the Baum-Connes conjecture for discrete groups.

Smooth K-Theory

We construct an analytic multiplicative model of smooth K-theory. We further introduce the notion of a smooth K-orientation of a proper submersion and define the associated push-forward which satisfies functoriality, compatibility with pull-back diagrams, and projection and bordism formulas. We construct a multiplicative lift of the Chern character from smooth K-theory to smooth rational cohomology and verify that the cohomological version of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for families lifts to smooth cohomology.

A geometric description of smooth cohomology

In this paper we give a geometric cobordism description of smooth integral cohomology. This model allows for simple descriptions of both the cup product and the integration, so that it is easy to verify the compatibilty of these structures.

Spaces with vanishing $l\sp 2$-homology and their fundamental groups (after Farber and Weinberger)

The "zero in the spectrum conjecture" asserted (in its strongest form) that for any manifold M zero should be in the l2-spectrum of the Laplacian (on forms) of the universal covering of M, i.e. that at least one (unreduced) L2-cohomology group of (the universal covering of) M is non-zero. Farber and Weinberger gave the first counterexamples to this conjecture. In this paper, using their fundamental idea to show the following stronger version of this result: Let G be a finitely presented group and suppose that the homology groups H_k(G,\ell^2(G)) are zero for k=0,1,2. For every dimension n\ge 6 there is a closed manifold M of dimension n and with fundamental group G such that the L2-cohomology of (the universal covering of) M vanishes in all degrees.

On the Equivalence of Geometric and Analytic K-Homology

We give a proof that the geometric K-homology theory for finite CW-complexes defined by Baum and Douglas is isomorphic to Kasparov's K-homology. The proof is a simplification of more elaborate arguments which deal with the geometric formulation of equivariant K-homology theory.

L^2-torsion of hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume

Suppose $\bar{M}$ is a compact connected odd-dimensional manifold with boundary, whose interior $M$ comes with a complete hyperbolic metric of finite volume. We will show that the $L^2$-topological torsion of $\bar{M}$ and the $L^2$-analytic torsion of the Riemannian manifold $M$ are equal. In particular, the $L^2$-topological torsion of $\bar{M}$ is proportional to the hyperbolic volume of $M$, with a constant of proportionality which depends only on the dimension and which is known to be nonzero in dimension 3, 5 and 7. In dimension 3 this proves the conjecture Of Lott and Lueck which gives a complete calculation of the $L^2$-topological torsion of compact $L^2$-acyclic 3-manifolds which admit a geometric torus-decomposition. In an appendix we give a counterexample to an extension of the Cheeger-Mueller theorem to manifolds with boundary: if the metric is not a product near the boundary, in general analytic and topological torsion are not equal, even if the Euler characteristic of the boundary vanishes. Keywords: L^2-torsion, hyperbolic manifolds, 3-manifolds

Real secondary index theory

In this paper, we study the family index of a family of spin manifolds. In particular, we discuss to which extend the real index (of the Dirac operator of the real spinor bundle if the fiber dimension is divisible by 8) which can be defined in this case contains extra information over the complex index (the index of its complexification). We study this question under the additional assumption that the complex index vanishes on the k-skeleton of B. In this case, using local index theory we define new analytical invariants $\hat c_k\in H^{k-1}(B;\reals/\integers)$. We then continue and describe these invariants in terms of known topological characteristic classes. Moreover, we show that it is an interesting new non-trivial invariant in many examples.

The Atiyah conjecture and Artinian rings

Let G be a group such that its finite subgroups have bounded order, let d denote the lowest common multiple of the orders of the finite subgroups of G, and let K be a subfield of C that is closed under complex conjugation. Let U(G) denote the algebra of unbounded operators affiliated to the group von Neumann algebra N(G), and let D(KG,U(G)) denote the division closure of KG in U(G); thus D(KG,U(G)) is the smallest subring of U(G) containing KG that is closed under taking inverses. Suppose n is a positive integer, and α\in \Mat_n(KG). Then αinduces a bounded linear map α: l^2(G)^n \to ł^2(G)^n, and \kerαhas a well-defined von Neumann dimension \dim_{N(G)} (\kerα). This is a nonnegative real number, and one version of the Atiyah conjecture states that d \dim_{N(G)}(\kerα) \in Z. Assuming this conjecture, we shall prove that if G has no nontrivial finite normal subgroup, then D(KG,U(G)) is a d \times d matrix ring over a skew field. We shall also consider the case when G has a nontrivial finite normal subgroup, and other subrings of U(G) that contain KG.

Galois cohomology of completed link groups

In this paper we compute the Galois cohomology of the pro-p completion of primitive link groups. Here, a primitive link group is the fundamental group of a tame link in the 3-sphere whose linking number diagram is irreducible modulo p (e.g. none of the linking numbers is divisible by p). The result is that (with Z/pZ-coefficients) the Galois cohomology is naturally isomorphic to the Z/pZ-cohomology of the discrete link group. The main application of this result is that for such groups the Baum-Connes conjecture or the Atiyah conjecture are true for every finite extension (or even every elementary amenable extension), if they are true for the group itself.

Duality for topological abelian group stacks and T-duality

v2: An additional assumption was added in Theorem 4.8. In order to show that a connected abelian group is admissible on the site of locally compact spaces we must in addition assume that it is locally topologically divisible. This condition is used in the proof of Lemma 4.62.

Sheaf theory for stacks in manifolds and twisted cohomology for S^1-gerbes

This is the first of a series of papers on sheaf theory on smooth and topological stacks and its applications. The main result of the present paper is the characterization of the twisted (by a closed integral three-form) de Rham complex on a manifold. As an object in the derived category it will be related with the push-forward of the constant sheaf from a S^1-gerbe with Dixmier-Douady class represented by the three-form. In order to formulate and prove this result we develop in detail the foundations of sheaf theory for smooth stacks.
