The coarse geometry of Tsirelson's space and applications

The main result of this article is a rigidity result pertaining to the spreading model structure for Banach spaces coarsely embeddable into Tsirelson's original space $T^*$. Every Banach space that is coarsely embeddable into $T^*$ must be reflexive and all its spreading models must be isomorphic to $c_0$. Several important consequences follow from our rigidity result. We obtain a coarse version of an influential theorem of Tsirelson: $T^*$ does not coarsely contain $c_0$ nor $\ell_p$ for $p\in[1,\infty)$. We show that there is no infinite dimensional Banach space that coarsely embeds into every infinite dimensional Banach space. In particular, we disprove the conjecture that the separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space coarsely embeds into every infinite dimensional Banach space. The rigidity result follows from a new concentration inequality for Lipschitz maps on the infinite Hamming graphs and taking values in $T^*$, and from the embeddability of the infinite Hamming graphs into Banach spaces that admit spreading models not isomorphic to $c_0$. Also, a purely metric characterization of finite dimensionality is obtained.

Coarse embeddings into $c_0(Γ)$

Let $λ$ be a large enough cardinal number (assuming GCH it suffices to let $λ=\aleph_ω$). If $X$ is a Banach space with $\text{dens}(X)\geλ$, which admits a coarse (or uniform) embedding into any $c_0(Γ)$, then $X$ fails to have nontrivial cotype, i.e. $X$ contains $\ell_\infty^n$ $C$-uniformly for every $C>1$. In the special case when $X$ has a symmetric basis, we may even conclude that it is linearly isomorphic with $c_0(\text{dens}X)$.

On the geometry of the countably branching diamond graphs

In this article, the bi-Lipschitz embeddability of the sequence of countably branching diamond graphs $(D_k^ω)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ is investigated. In particular it is shown that for every $\varepsilon>0$ and $k\in\mathbb{N}$, $D_k^ω$ embeds bi-Lipschiztly with distortion at most $6(1+\varepsilon)$ into any reflexive Banach space with an unconditional asymptotic structure that does not admit an equivalent asymptotically uniformly convex norm. On the other hand it is shown that the sequence $(D_k^ω)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ does not admit an equi-bi-Lipschitz embedding into any Banach space that has an equivalent asymptotically midpoint uniformly convex norm. Combining these two results one obtains a metric characterization in terms of graph preclusion of the class of asymptotically uniformly convexifiable spaces, within the class of separable reflexive Banach spaces with an unconditional asymptotic structure. Applications to bi-Lipschitz embeddability into $L_p$-spaces and to some problems in renorming theory are also discussed.

Closed Ideals of Operators between the Classical Sequence Spaces

We prove that the spaces $\mathcal L(\ell_p,\mathrm{c}_0)$, $\mathcal L(\ell_p,\ell_\infty)$ and $\mathcal L(\ell_1,\ell_q)$ of operators with $1<p,q<\infty$ have continuum many closed ideals. This extends and improves earlier works by Schlumprecht and Zsák, by Wallis, and by Sirotkin and Wallis. Several open problems remain. Key to our construction of closed ideals are matrices with the Restricted Isometry Property that come from Compressed Sensing.

A metric interpretation of reflexivity for Banach spaces

We define two metrics $d_{1,α}$ and $d_{\infty,α}$ on each Schreier family $\mathcal{S}_α$, $α<ω_1$, with which we prove the following metric characterization of reflexivity of a Banach space $X$: $X$ is reflexive if and only if there is an $α<ω_1$, so that there is no mapping $Φ:\mathcal{S}_α\to X$ for which $$ cd_{\infty,α}(A,B)\le \|Φ(A)-Φ(B)\|\le C d_{1,α}(A,B) \text{ for all $A,B\in\mathcal{S}_α$.}$$ Secondly, we prove for separable and reflexive Banach spaces $X$, and certain countable ordinals $α$ that $\max(\text{ Sz}(X),\text{ Sz}(X^*))\le α$ if and only if $({\mathcal S}_α, d_{1,α})$ does not bi-Lipschitzly embed into $X$. Here $\text{Sz}(Y)$ denotes the Szlenk index of a Banach space $Y$.

On Zippin's Embedding Theorem of Banach spaces into Banach spaces with bases

We present a new proof of Zippin's Embedding Theorem, that every separable reflexive Banach space embeds into one with shrinking and boundedly complete basis, and every Banach space with a separable dual embeds into one with a shrinking basis. This new proof leads to improved versions of other embedding results.

The Szlenk Index of L_p(X)

We find an optimal upper bound on the values of the weak$^*$-dentability index $Dz(X)$ in terms of the Szlenk index $Sz(X)$ of a Banach space $X$ with separable dual. Namely, if $\;Sz(X)=ω^α$, for some $α<ω_1$, and $p\in(1,\infty)$, then $$Sz(X)\le Dz(X)\le Sz(L_p(X))\le {cases} ω^{α+1} &\text{if $α$ is a finite ordinal,} ω^α &\text{if $α$ is an infinite ordinal.} {cases}$$

Subsequential minimality in Gowers and Maurey spaces

We define block sequences $(x_n)$ in every block subspace of a variant of the space of Gowers and Maurey so that the map $x_{2n-1}\mapsto x_{2n} $ extends to an isomorphism. This implies the existence of a subsequentially minimal HI space, which solves a question in \cite{FR}.

Shift invariant preduals of $\ell_1(\Z)$

The Banach space $\ell_1(\Z)$ admits many non-isomorphic preduals, for example, $C(K)$ for any compact countable space $K$, along with many more exotic Banach spaces. In this paper, we impose an extra condition: the predual must make the bilateral shift on $\ell_1(\Z)$ weak$^*$-continuous. This is equivalent to making the natural convolution multiplication on $\ell_1(\Z)$ separately weak*-continuous and so turning $\ell_1(\Z)$ into a dual Banach algebra. We call such preduals \emph{shift-invariant}. It is known that the only shift-invariant predual arising from the standard duality between $C_0(K)$ (for countable locally compact $K$) and $\ell_1(\Z)$ is $c_0(\Z)$. We provide an explicit construction of an uncountable family of distinct preduals which do make the bilateral shift weak$^*$-continuous. Using Szlenk index arguments, we show that merely as Banach spaces, these are all isomorphic to $c_0$. We then build some theory to study such preduals, showing that they arise from certain semigroup compactifications of $\Z$. This allows us to produce a large number of other examples, including non-isometric preduals, and preduals which are not Banach space isomorphic to $c_0$.

Dichotomy theorems for random matrices and closed ideals of operators on $\big(\bigoplus_{n=1}^\infty\ell_1^n \big)_{\mathrm{c}_0}$

We prove two dichotomy theorems about sequences of operators into $L_1$ given by random matrices. In the second theorem we assume that the entries of each random matrix form a sequence of independent, symmetric random variables. Then the corresponding sequence of operators either uniformly factor the identity operators on $\ell_1^k$ $(k\in\mathbb N$) or uniformly approximately factor through $\mathrm{c}_0$. The first theorem has a slightly weaker conclusion still related to factorization properties but makes no assumption on the random matrices. Indeed, it applies to operators defined on an arbitrary sequence of Banach spaces. These results provide information on the closed ideal structure of the Banach algebra of all operators on the space $\big(\bigoplus_{n=1}^\infty\ell_1^n \big)_{\mathrm{c}_0}$.

The universality of $\ell_1$ as a dual space

Let $X$ be a Banach space with a separable dual. We prove that $X$ embeds isomorphically into a $\cL_\infty$ space $Z$ whose dual is isomorphic to $\ell_1$. If, moreover, $U$ is a space so that $U$ and $X$ are totally incomparable, then we construct such a $Z$, so that $Z$ and $U$ are totally incomparable. If $X$ is separable and reflexive, we show that $Z$ can be made to be somewhat reflexive.

A new infinite game in Banach spaces with applications

We consider the following two-player game played on a separable, infinite-dimensional Banach space X. Player S chooses a positive integer k_1 and a finite-codimensional subspace X_1 of X. Then player P chooses x_1 in the unit sphere of X_1. Moves alternate thusly, forever. We study this game in the following setting. Certain normalized, 1-unconditional sequences (u_i) and (v_i) are fixed so that S has a winning strategy to force P to select x_i's so that if the moves are (k_1,X_1,x_1,k_2,X_2,x_2,...), then (x_i) is dominated by (u_{k_i}) and/or (x_i) dominates (v_{k_i}). In particular, we show that for suitable (u_i) and (v_i) if X is reflexive and S can win both of the games above, then X embeds into a reflexive space Z with an FDD which also satisfies analogous block upper (u_i) and lower (v_i) estimates. Certain universal space consequences ensue.

Banach spaces of bounded Szlenk index

For a countable ordinal a we denote by C_a the class of separable, reflexive Banach spaces whose Szlenk index and the Szlenk index of their dual are bounded by a. We show that each C_a admits a separable, reflexive universal space. We also show that spaces in the class C_{omega^{a*omega}} embed into spaces of the same class with a basis. As a consequence we deduce that each C_a is analytic in the Effros-Borel structure of subspaces of C[0,1].

The Banach space S is complementably minimal and subsequentially prime

We first include a result of the second author showing that the Banach space S is complementably minimal. We then show that every block sequence of the unit vector basis of S has a subsequence which spans a space isomorphic to its square. By the Pełczyński decomposition method it follows that every basic sequence in S which spans a space complemented in S has a subsequence which spans a space isomorphic to S (i.e. S is a subsequentially prime space).
